Yet another side project

Goong S cast
(Cast of GOONG S: Kang Doo, Heo Yi Jae, Seven, Park Shin Hye)

.

Part of my latest set of distractions has been getting sucked into the world of kdramas… They’re so incredibly addicting! Not only are they fun as light-hearted entertainment, but what’s worse (or better?) is that I’ve had marked improvement in my Korean language skills since I started getting sucked in a year ago so I justify the time spent as “study.” (It kind of is, honest.)

.

.
I remember watching them as a kid with my parents, before the days of internet filesharing or widespread fansubbing, and I’d have to turn to my mother every other line and ask, “What’s going on? What did they say??” Needless to say, my parents got annoyed a lot, and I didn’t watch very many dramas.

But now with the wonderful wide world of internet filesharing and communities like d-addicts which aggregate fansubbing projects into lovely, bite-sized torrent-able packages (and don’t even get me started on the amount of entertainment hours enabled by clubbox)… Anything and everything you could possibly want is available, literally just minutes or hours after official release.

I’ve been part of a fansubbing team for the past few months, and although I wasn’t sure of my abilities going in, I’ve found I’m actually a lot more able than I thought I was. I can understand a lot more than I thought, and it’s a helluva lot of fun. I’m happy to give back to the community, so to speak, since I’ve leeched a lot from it previously. My latest translation project was doing the first episode for the much-anticipated Goong S (aka Palace S). I knew it would be very popular given the immense and wide-spread popularity of the original Goong (aka Palace, aka Princess Hours), plus the anticipation of seeing Seven in his debut acting gig… so I felt quite the pressure to do a good job. On top of that, it seemed like fans on a lot of sites were asking and demanding just moments after the show was aired in Korea, “When are the fansubs going to be out??” Needless to say I felt I had to do a good job, and quickly.

Superstar Seven

.
The subs were released today (show aired Wednesday, sub released Saturday morning, not too bad right?) and in less than 12 hours there have been more than 2,500 downloads. Wow. I’m surprised and amazed. I had no idea it would be that many, that quickly. I went back and checked to see how many downloads the subs for the original Goong episode 1 had, and it’s nearly 50,000! That’s insane. Nobody can deny the power of the Korean Wave, huh?

Goong aka Palace
(The storyline may be different from the original, but the beautiful palace scenery is still the same.)

"but what's worse (or better?) is that I've had marked improvement in my Korean language skills since I started getting sucked in a year ago so I justify the time spent as “study.” (It kind of is, honest.)"

this is exactly how I've been justifying watching so many mandarin series. Korean seems to be a more challenging language to pick up though - we'll see whether my korean will improve as much as mandarin in a year =P

Hi javabeans,

I just felt as if I needed to leave a comment on your first (I think) post, almost as if I'm visiting a shrine and rubbing a lucky monument or something. Your blog is truly awesome and has broadened my outlook so much, especially helping me appreciate and embrace my Korean background.

With sincere and heartfelt thanks,
birdscout

I was curious to see the first post on this site, and here i am! Although if I'm not wrong, JB had a blog before this one, before moving it here.

I'd just like to thank Javabeans for this awesome site! It reminds me of last year when I first discovered the site to read Boys over Flowers recaps! After that, I didn't come anymore, but decided to check it out again at the end of last year, which is when I got hooked to You're Beautiful, as well as this blog.

Sigh, I visit this blog everyday, and I literally squeal with delight everytime I see a recap posted. And I go nuts reading them. Nowadays I read them on my phone in school, and everytime I'm looking at my phone with glee, my friends would go, "reading your recaps again?!"

Heheh. Love you JB, and (early) merry Xmas to you!! :D

And like everyone here, I'd thought to check out The First Post. Hehe.

I've only been a lurker on this site for a few months and an occasional commentor but this has undoubtedly made my life so much happier and boring days less unbearable.. I can't thank you enough for all your hard work JB! :)

Can we all pretend that we were all here from the very begining? Can we say that we knew this would grow from two post and two comments to what this blog is today: Recapping about five shows and receiving 300 or more (sometimes 1000) comments a post? Let's pretend we can see the future. Yea!!!! Javabeans and Girlfriday.
I try not to love your website, but I do. I read it everyday.

Didn't even read the comments then. Maybe it's because i'm not interested with goong s. Or maybe because i cant believe this the First post EVER. haha You know i thought it could be anything that's coffee prince-, YEH- or GY-related. Or perhaps GOONG counts?! Haha whatever.. As i always say, thanks a bunch ladies.. U changed my perspective a lot.. In life, in love, in everything.. I owe u alot

Wow..so it looks like I'm the most recent 2013 post on the very first ever dramabeans blog post! xD I kind of feel like we as avid readers of this wonderful site should observe and celebrate the day of the first post. I would be really fun I think since the site has come such a long way. I don't know if JavaBeans will see this or another member of the staff, but I hope whoever does see it, brain storms a little about my suggestion. ;3

Wanting to see what the earliest post was, I clicked the last page and was reminded of how long it took to sub dramas back then!

I didn't start watching dramas till about 5-6 years ago, and I remember having to wait at least 2 days for subs to come out ... and if it came out in 2 days, I want happy with how fast it was.

Now if it's not up within a few hours I freak out because I need to know what happens ASAP.

So thankful for dramabeans because here I can talk about dramas as much as I want to in a community that definitely won't judge me for it hehe thank you!

Hi javabeans! I saw the article of you in a recent magazine and decided to stop by. I'm in love because I've been looking for blogs on kdramas. I'm a newbie and of course I'm in love. Now trying to learn Korean and will use your excuse as a reason for my addiction to all things kdrama. Thanks for the share. And I know I've come late to the party but better late than never. *♡kdramas4life*
