Random Friday song

This entry is totally just an excuse to post a song, but whatever, it’s Friday!

You know, JEON HYE BIN (aka Bin, aka Seung Mi in Witch Amusement) is one of those actresses who apparently has a lot of anti’s, and although I don’t know why, I could kind of understand, because before Witch Amusement, I’d only ever seen her on shows like X-Man. For some reason, she tended to rub me the wrong way, although I had no reason to dislike her. There are just some people who are like that, I guess — I’d put Chae Yeon into the same category. Some celebrities just seem to be the kind of people women love to love (Lee Da Hae, Song Hye Kyo), while others are the kind that women love to hate.

Anyway, Bin has surprised me by being very likable in Witch Amusement, and she’s certainly really lovely on the show, enough that I found myself grudgingly liking her. (Dramas have a tendency to do that; same thing happened with Seven in Goong S.) Anyway, so what really sealed the deal is when I found out my favorite song in Witch Amusement — the one that I feel really captures the fun, cool essence of what the show is about — is sung by her.

Who knew?

Witch Amusement: Episode 3

Witch Amusement is getting better and better! What makes this show so enjoyable is its ability to take situations and characters that you’ve seen before but somehow make them entertaining, without seeming recycled. Also, today’s episode was the first one that, in addition to making me laugh as usual, also really had moving moments. But we’ll get to that later.

Fansubbing the Korean Language

fansubbing-the-korean-language

Now that With S2 has just released the rest of Dal Ja’s Spring to finish our 30th project (30 kdramas! In just over a year!), I had a few thoughts on fansubbing as a whole… The more I fansub and translate, the more I’ve gotten comfortable recognizing wordplay in Korean, which I always get a little kick out of. I like wordplay of all sorts, and I think people enjoy understanding them, because it gives you a deeper appreciation into the language of a drama, for instance, rather than merely the plot. I’ve also seen a couple of comments noting interest in some of my Korean language explanations, which made me realize if I get a kick out of little details, other people probably would too.

I was listening to the newly released OST for the new show Hello! Miss, which is cute and lively to match the cute and lively show itself. I’m a big fan of music (could you tell?) and drama soundtracks, because I think the songs used in a show do a tremendous job of establishing the atmosphere and reinforcing emotion. Sometimes music is overused or badly applied; but when it’s used well (see: Soulmate, Que Sera Sera), it enhances the experience significantly.

SONG OF THE DAY

KT Tunstall - “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree”
This was played in Hello! Miss’s Episode 3, briefly. KT Tunstall must be gaining popularity in Korea; Sunday’s episode of Que Sera Sera also included another of her songs, “Suddenly I See.” (Or is she more popular than I think? I always find it weird when someone you know about when they aren’t famous suddenly becomes famous.) This song plays briefly in the scene when Su Ha and Jung Sook start their first day of work.
