Coffee Prince: Seventeenth Cup (Final)

And, finally. Here we are: the final episode!

I’m sad for two reasons: First, that Coffee Prince is over. And second, that the finale wasn’t nearly as good as it could have, or should have, been. Don’t get me wrong; it was a perfectly serviceable final episode. It was cute, and we had a happy ending. For that alone, it was fine. I’ll leave off commenting on the rest till the end.

FINAL EPISODE SUMMARY

Han Gyul and Eun Chan wake up from their night together feeling happy but bashful. Han Gyul is so flustered he hurries to dress as Eun Chan wakes up, and puts both legs through one pant leg, causing him to fall to the ground onto some conveniently dropped pillows.

Eun Chan knows her mother’s going to kill her when she finds out she spent the night with Han Gyul, but she’s not so panicked that she can’t first have breakfast with him. Han Gyul tells Eun Chan not to grow her hair or wear miniskirts when she’s in Italy: “If men ask if you have a boyfriend, tell them you’re married. No, just stay invisible.” Sobering to the fact that she’s leaving soon, he cautions her to take good care of herself. They’ll have to go on dates every day before she leaves; he’ll take her all the places she wanted to go to before.

Driving in to work together, Eun Chan gets a call from Eun Sae, who tells Eun Chan she owes her. Eun Sae covered for her, telling their mother that Eun Chan had left early for work.

Ha Rim sees them arriving to work together and immediately senses something different. With glee, he guesses the truth and tries to go around proving it. He manages to sneak up on them, and singsongs his congratulations to the couple.

Han Gyul goes out of his way to sneak a present to Eun Chan so she’ll find it while cleaning, which turns out to be a pair of shoes (for comfort, since baristas are always on their feet). Eun Chan wonders if it’s okay to accept, because there’s a saying that you shouldn’t give your lover shoes because they’ll run away from you — but Han Gyul has taken proper precautions, writing inside them: “You’re mine!” and signing with his name.

That night, Eun Chan falls asleep while on the phone with Han Gyul, and he leaves her on speakerphone — and awakens the next morning with a laugh to realize Eun Chan is still snoring into her phone. He hangs up and calls back to serenade her with the song “I Love You,” originally sung by Han Dong Joon.

On her last day of work, Eun Chan makes her sad goodbyes with everyone. Each of the Princes takes his turn to say a few last words, finding Eun Chan crying in her work locker. Min Yub is first, and gives her some cosmetics as a present, saying she’ll be very pretty when she does herself up. He tells her, “You know I really respect and like you, don’t you? Don’t worry about Angel and your mother, because I’ll look after them.”

Next is Sun Ki: “Take care of yourself, and come back safely. You’ll do a good job — I have faith in you.” For once, Ha Rim has the fewest words, tearing up as Eun Chan tells him how much she likes him, even if they’ve fought in the past. He cries, and leaves her with a goodbye letter without being able to say anything.

Eun Chan cries as she reads the note (song: Maximilian Hecker’s “I’ll Be a Virgin, I’ll Be a Mountain” from a previous episode):

“My Chan, have a good time studying abroad. I don’t know how I’ll stay cheerful after you leave. Since you can sleep and eat well wherever you go, that doesn’t worry me, but there’s just one thing that does — you and men. You’d better not be won over by some guy’s flowery words or killer smile. I’ll handle Han Gyul hyung over here, so don’t worry. If only you weren’t his girl, I could’ve tried pursuing you. My Chan, I’ll miss you. P.S. — dreams come true!”

Meanwhile, Han Sung and Yu Ju’s marriage has been going well. Yu Ju has taken special care to refrain from working or going out to meet friends to watch out for the baby, but still, she encounters trouble. She experiences pains that send her to the hospital, and (the implication is that) they lose the baby. Han Sung comforts her (without anger or resentment, merely worry).

Everyone’s sad to see Eun Chan go, starting with her family, the Coffee Princes, and of course, Han Gyul. Eun Chan goes to the airport alone to avoid a painful parting, especially with Han Gyul, and says her last goodbyes to him over the phone. Her last words before hanging up are a choked string of “I love you”s. (Song: “Sad Thing” by 어른아이 / Adult Child, posted previously.)

And then, we’re two years later.

Eun Chan’s voiceover reads the various messages she’s sent to Han Gyul over the past two years via postcards, which he has posted up on his refrigerator.

Her messages include:

“There are lots of handsome men here. I’ve got a lot of them chasing me around saying they like me. Still, you’re the most handsome of them all!…”

“I’m sleeping late these days, with the excuse that I don’t have a part-time job to go to. Did I come here to study, or play?…”

“But thanks to you and Grandmother, I’m learning a lot. It’s so interesting. Thank you, and love you. I’ll become an impressive woman and go back soon. I miss you. I really miss you! … I love you. Here’s a kiss for you!”

Han Gyul has been busy working with the company to franchise the next store — Coffee Princess.

Min Yub has been working as a model, while Eun Sae works with the behind-the-scenes staff. They’re still together, and at her suggestion, he’s changed his modeling name to simply “Hwang Min.” (Eun Sae’s nickname for him, though, is “Yub.” I wonder if part of her suggestion, aside from professional reasons, was so she gets to be the only one to call him that. It’s cute.) It’s nice to see her so proud of him for something, which is a nice change from their early relationship.

Han Gyul is eagerly counting down the days to Eun Chan’s return, so naturally he’s shocked and panicked when Eun Chan mentions the possibility of staying in Italy for another year to further her studies. It’s a great opportunity for her, her tuition will be covered, and she’d like to stay… Han Gyul yells an insistent no, and reminds her that she signed the contract with his grandmother to come back after two years. He’d even planned the opening of the new cafe to time with her arrival. She asks, “Then should I give it up and return?” and tells him she’ll forget the idea since he doesn’t like it… which makes Han Gyul feel guilty.

Ha Rim, who’s in charge of the interior design for the new Coffee Princess cafe, has been dating Byul for the past two years. I find her inclusion in the story pretty pointless, but I suppose she’s there to give some promise of a happy ending for Ha Rim. She brings up the fact that Ha Rim’s family is going through tough times (they had to close their hospital), which is another weirdly tacked-on story bit. But okay.

Likewise, a new girl walks into the Coffee Prince one day to earnestly request a job there, and the girl seems to serve the main purpose of giving Sun Ki a potential happy ending too. The girl (who also had a minor role in Dal Ja’s Spring) gets on Sun Ki’s nerves, until she responds to his grumbling in fluent Japanese, which is a welcome surprise. It’s also hinted that she’s sort of an Eun Chan version 2.0 — Ha Rim’s reaction to her appearance echoes the very words he first said about Eun Chan, she’s cheerful, she’s 24, and I think she’s supposed to be tomboyish (although the actress is too feminine for that to come across well).

Even Mr. Hong gets a storyline, meeting his long-ago love (the good liar) by chance and having a brief conversation with her. She’s married and has a child now, and I suppose his sense of closure comes when he gets up to leave, and she tells him, “Go on. This time I’ll be the one who stays behind.” He answers, “Sure, I’ll try being the first to go this time.” Closure’s good and all, but I never really felt his story was opened enough to require closing.

Han Sung and Yu Ju celebrate their two-year anniversary. They seem happy, but Yu Ju appears to still be affected by the baby they lost. Han Sung comes upon her as she stares at a set of baby shoes, and guesses what she’s thinking:

“Yu Ju, I don’t have any greed for more. With you always looking at me, and being by my side, and us both doing work we love… I don’t have any more to wish for.”

Han Sung tells her that he thinks they should stop going to the hospital, which I surmise is because they’ve been trying to become pregnant. Yu Ju suggests they go away on a trip together.

(Song: Arco’s “Perfect World,” previously posted.)

Meanwhile, at home alone, Han Gyul deliberates over his new dilemma — whether to persuade Eun Chan to come home quickly, or to let her further her studies as she wants. Finally, he comes to a decision, and calls her, leaving the message:

“You have to pay me back later for putting me through all this. Continue your studying, then come home. Just one more year. When you get this message, call me.”

He runs off, yelling, “Come home quickly! I miss you! Come back soon!”

Later, Han Gyul has a somewhat disappointing interview with a potential barista, who wants double the pay that was offered. After she leaves, Eun Chan arrives unexpectedly, rendering him stunned and speechless.

Eun Chan starts off by saying that she’s here to interview for the barista position, and lists all her qualifications. (Song: “Make Up” by 어른아이 / Adult Child.)

Eun Chan: “It sounded like that other applicant was asking for double the pay, but all you have to do is feed me. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a midnight snack. I’m good at cleaning, I’m strong, and I make really great coffee. I also have an excellent history as an international barista. I do pretty well.”
Han Gyul: “More than skill, we need someone with a devoted work ethic.”
Eun Chan: “I’m incredibly devoted. If you just say so nicely, I can do the cleaning, cooking, dishes, and everything for you.”

After the initial gladness at seeing each other again, Han Gyul is (mildly) upset that she came back without saying anything, and for putting him through such worry, thinking she’d be gone another year. She assures him that she won’t leave him alone ever again: “Even if you told me to leave now, I won’t. I’ve got to stick by your side every day from now on. I won’t leave you for even a minute.” Mollified, Han Gyul asks, “Twenty-four hours? Night and day, every day? Then we’ll have to get married quickly.”

It appears she misled him purposely with her suggestion of staying another year, and had his parents and grandmother in on the secret. Eun Chan’s kept in contact with them all this time (Han Gyul’s father even met her in Italy when he traveled there on business), and his parents are firmly in favor of the relationship. Even his grandmother can’t hide her gruffness too much: “She asked me to keep her return a secret, but she’s with Han Gyul right now. They’re just crazy about each other.”

And naturally, everyone at Coffee Prince is thrilled to see her (and shocked at her new look).

(Song: “La la la, it’s love” by The Melody, on the OST.)

Han Sung and Yu Ju have their romantic getaway…

And Han Gyul tries out his coffee-making skills for Eun Chan.

(Ending song: “Coffee Is…” by Cloud Cuckoo Land, posted previously.)

Coffee Prince closes today!

Additional thoughts:

This episode left me smiling widely and feeling good. It was a nice wrap-up to a series that turned out to be surprisingly more insightful, fun, and engaging than I’d hoped when I first started watching. I re-read what I’d written in response to the first episode, and was particularly happy to be proved wrong in initially supposing the series held little promise for profound meaning.

As a final episode, I didn’t particularly find this 17th hour to be anything extraordinary. I seem to be in the minority in having absolutely no problem with the “__ years later” device, at least on principle. Some series misuse the time skip in a lazy or poor way, and some use it very well. My disappointment with the last episode has nothing to do with the fact that they skipped two years. It’s merely that this episode felt like a (very, very) long epilogue. They could have cut it in half and been fine. It felt like a tacked-on extension to a series that had been so popular that its very talented director and writer were forced to artificially lengthen its material to fill an extra hour. Imagine that.

But when all’s said and done, I thoroughly enjoyed Coffee Prince, and didn’t tire of it at any point through its conclusion — which is remarkable, given the pure statistics: seventeen episode summaries, twenty novel recaps, and an additional ten posts on miscellaneous news items and behind-the-scenes interviews. That’s a whopping total of forty-seven posts, and I won’t even dare to do a word count, but I’m guessing it must top out at more than 60,000 words, at least. That’s the size of a novel.

And the comments from everyone! All 2,830 of them. That makes Coffee Prince nothing short of a phenomenon. Thanks to everyone for participating in what has been an overwhelmingly pleasant fandom (as far as I can tell), and here’s to hoping it’s not too long before we get another series (and fandom) that’s as widely entertaining and engaging as this has been.

ok, not the first to post. It's funny when I first looked at your blog, there was no one who had posted the comment, so finally I thought I'd be the first... wishful thinking.
I'm having CP withdrawal symptoms!!! I've been in and out of your blog for at least a dozen times today, and it hasn't even been a full day yet. And everytime I come back, the comments keep getting longer and longer. This is just testament to how your blog has helped us to keep up with the goings on of CP, not to mention all the other Kdramas that you've posted on.
As I read in one of the posts, this is definitely worse than breaking up!
I'm tearing up now so have to get out.
Let me say thank you again for the wonderful insights, makes me want to make a trip to Seoul just to sit in the CP cafe and spend the afternoon trying to recall each and every scene over and over again!

Maybe it lacks the fireworks but I have to say it stayed true to the understated way the PD portrayed the story. I have to agree that there were unnecessary parts but overall I was satisified. The first half of the episode made it for me, I guess. The bittersweet goodbyes with HG and the princes is just heart-warming.
I guess it would be quite a while for me to love a series as much as I love this one, I never thought it could top "Thank You" on my favorite list this year but it had (but only by a small margin). I can't wait for Eunhye's next project and I hope she works with this PD again, the Anne of Green Gable's project looks promising.
Lastly, thank you javabeans for all the hardwork and effort you make on bringing us this wonderful summaries.

by the way, would like to also say that i love the screen shot you've placed at the top of the screen (even for all the other episodes!). there's such power in the image that captures the emotions that are dominant in the specific chapter. the image above just moves me, i feel that it captures the signature playfulness of their relationship and yet it speaks so subtly of the deep love and closeness they share. maybe i'm just thinking too much into this. but it's a good kind of thinking too much i guess, hehehe. hmmmm, absolutely in love. thanks again javabeans! :D

The COFFEE PRINCE JOURNEY

The journey of CP begun
The fateful day i laid my eyes on this blog
My eyes opened up blissfully to the screen
My soul, heart and brain emerged as one
BEHOLD my COFFEE PRINCE journey had begun!
This little curiosity in time has grown
yes! time has flown, time has flown
A lot has been learnt on my very own.

CP has been a mystifying journey
with every up and down
with tears and laughter
with hate and love
with stupidity and wisdom
with believers and friends
And even in the journey of Frustration
We found means of Celebration.

Tick..tock, the clock goes on
Minute by minute, then hourly
Month by month
Tick..tock and in this journey
We have searched, question and answered
whilst walking painfully along many of CP's path.

Thou the CP's journey is at its end
Virtually shaking hands with the sad and merry
Our passion for CP which was once raw
is now confined within the PD's law
for CP followers journey itself never ends.
Be it in a hot summer or a winter's cold
BEHOLD! COFFEE PRINCE's journey will UNFOLD

PS. JAVABEANS/DRAMABEANS UR THE BEST. >wink

I'm a big fan of Coffee Prince. It is the BEST Kdrama that I have seen sofar. Ideas are new and fresh through out the whole series. Although there are some cliche - e.g. 2yr time skip - the team, not just the PD and writer but also the artists, has undertaken their parts so well that, it is just PERFECT!

There are many SWEET moments that will stay with me for a long time. All artists are really good and just right for their parts. Yet, YEH stands out for me because she has immersed herself in EC that I fell in love with EC from the 1st cup. And, of course, I became a big fan of YEH, too.

Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed CP and will miss it... :(
P.S. Thanks for the summaries and your additional thoughts. Enjoyed reading those and they were a great help since I don't understand Korean... he-he.

Hi there, I've never commented here before, but I've been relying on your episode summaries since about episode 5. I loved this series from the start because of its fresh outlook, and I greatly thank you for providing our insight and skills on the episodes. Coffee Prince has been such a pleasure to watch. Also, thank you for your subbing, how else could I get to watch these episodes and read the novel? Thanks again, and I'll keep visiting here to see what's next up your sleeve. XOXO

congrats on another drama well done!

i was refreshing the page every now and then just so i could read this final ep of CP. I thought the ending was a perfectly fine conclusion to a great series, even though it was a bit dragged out. What i would have liked to see was actually some cliff hanger that could have produced into a season 2. Saying that i think its better that they didn't as most season 2's turn into flops.

I applaud the cast and their ace acting skills. One thing that bugged me however was eun hye's change of hair style . Not the most dashing hair style i thought she would reappear with but i think it suited her well enough in the end.

Thanks again and i hope to see more great drama's from you cause i absloutley love them!

Wow, what a day! I'd planned to grab a session to the streaming server a couple of hours ahead to make sure I got a connection, but a meeting overran, and so I had to drive home like a KDrama hero rushing to pre-empt his childhood sweetheart's imminent wedding to the Wrong Guy on the wrong side of Seoul, but I still didn't get back till 5 mins before the broadcast started. To my amazement I got a connection first time, and not a single bout of buffering for the whole 80 mins or so. Maybe MBC put on extra server capacity.

I suppose we've all become a little blasé about the massive talents of the CP team and so were half-expecting them to do the totally impossible with their usual aplomb. But rounding this all off to everyone's satisfaction (including, I suspect, the full professional satisfaction of the creative team themselves) truly would have been an impossible feat, so I'm more than happy with what they did manage and how.

Except that, though as acey has observed, the idea of falling asleep and snoring into the cellphone till morning comes is charming, the "old guy" in me (boy, the only problem I have with some comments on this blog is that they're pretty heavily ageist) makes we want to say DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME. Sleeping with a cellphone on standby under the pillow is bad enough. But sleeping through the night with it clamped to the base of your brain in full transmit-receive mode is rather like opening a Coffee Prince branch on top of the Tschernobyl sarcophagus. Though some of us are hooked so badly, we'd probably helicopter in for a radiation-enhanced brew even there.

Finally, last night here in Europe, while javabeans posted and hundreds of you kicked off the comments, I had a dream. I was at a very busy train station and I'd come to along see someone off. In fact, I had somehow come along to see off every single one of the huge number of passengers who were boarding a very long train, and I felt a twinge of regret as each and every one of them climbed on board and disappeared from my sight. And yet, I didn't recognise any of them, though at the same time I felt I knew and would miss them all and they seemed to know me, because they each gave me a wave as they stepped up into the carriages. Then the train left and I was completely alone in a huge deserted station. Which, when I then woke up, I recognised wasn't actually a station at all, but the entrance to a rather run-down 1960s underground shopping mall on Princes Street, Edinburgh. But I think the train was the CP experience, with javabeans, the PD and the writer up front in the cab driving the whole thing, and all those known-but-unknown passengers were the folk who have commented here, and countless others who have been enjoying the ride with the rest of us but haven't felt able to say anything on-line. I guess I'm not the only one right now who's feeling a teeny bit desolate, but nonetheless massively content and hugely grateful, above all to the creator and sustainer of this blog.

Javabeans: If you get back even just a tiny fraction of the delight and understanding you have so generously given to so many people across the globe, you will, as the Korean idiom rather wonderfully puts it, "live well". We all hope and pray you do.

There's a big lump in my throat stopping myself to cry as this is the final cup of coffee I'll have with the coffee prince. I have throughly enjoyed watching the drama and always looking forward to your blogs so much as I've place it in my bookmarks.
At first I didn't quite know what to say, however looking at how the actually made the finale sort of a "closure", I thought it was quite sweet, like putting 4 heapfuls of sugar in an espresso, it needed that to avoid the caffeine rush, as indeed I feel viewers like me would have wanted it that way especially those who are not as addicted to caffeine just like being addicted to watching CP, we do need a little weaning off period.
This ending sure was well thought of, as many would say not perfect.
But thats the beauty of it, nothing is ever perfect, that's life. All the Prince's gor what hopefully what they want, everybody happy in their own little way , hey even the manager found happiness after seeing his long lost love and being able to actually leave first.. that was great. EC mom had her closure on the 16th cup, if everyone forgot, thats when she said she would wait for her girls to settle down if Mr Go would still wait for her.
As for the other pair, having a child after getting married is a bliss, but sometimes it takes a while.. ( I know and very much familiar with). Don't you think its soo unfair if they had the baby anyway.. it will look too perfect.
What made coffee prince perfect is because its imperfect, like living itself!
Eun Chan and Han Gyul is true, because as lots of skeptics would think that long distance love affairs doesn't work.. strangely enough it does if both parties work for it and won't fool around or waver somewhere.. he he he..
Too good to be true but this is like my story, or someone else, a bit too similar but it happens.
Kudos to the staff and everyone involved with the production of coffee prince
Here's looking forward to more kdramas such as these.. lifelike.. fresh and totally boosting like caffeine!
Cheers to you javabeans for entertaining us with your blogs and to fellow commentators addicted to coffee prince.
This las sip is for all of you! slllurrrrrrpppppppppppppp!!

Later mates!!

Dear Sarah aka Java Beans,

I am an addict to Coffee Prince and to your website. I always come and read your summary every Tuesday and Wednesday to enjoy cups of coffee here with all the roles, which I came to love. Love your songs you put up, love the detail that you write in, and the picture that you include in. Although I might be enjoyed the film more if I do not know how the story evolved, ...but I could not help it ...I am an addict. Seriously amazing job you have with this series (I did recommended your site to everybody I know)

Now it is over, I just feel it will not right not to drop a big THANK YOU note...

P.S.
Please don't discard the songs yet, I need some time to get all the music that I love :)

Coffee Prince I'l miss You!!!

>Yoon Eun Hye as Go Eun Chan - - Great portrayal of character.. I know she gave a LOT of effort to show the "EunChan" looks, and character.. 1 thumb up for you!!!
>Gong Yoo as Choi Han Kyul - - Gosh!!!!! I adore you!!! This is the first time I've watch a drama with Gong Yoo and yet I think he deserves to be praised.. a HOT one!!! From being a playboy/ a not serious guy turned into a crazy over EunChan one!!! I like it!!! and in my lifetime, this is the first time I've had a comment in a Filipino Language..(coz I'm a Filipina)... Just to express much my thoughts about Gong Yoo in the drama I've quoted, "Gosh!!! Gong Yoo Nakakabaliw ka!!" I keep on smiling and even laughing whenever I see Gong Yoo on screen.. Muuaahhhzzz... Han Yoo Ju and Choi Han Sung - - throughout the 10 years, they've had their wedding
>Han Sung's dog - - KAWAII!!!
>Princes - - I'll miss you also..
--Min Yub - The way he carries Ha Rim if Ha Rim was so Mad with EunChan
--Ha Rim - A very sincere friend and a very 'expert playboy'
--Sun Ki - who had loved and ready to love even w/o receiving love in return
--the oldest prince - very lazy and UNTIDY one..but yet he understands EunChan
>EunChan's family
--Eun Sae - very vain on herself yet a TRUE sister..
--Mother - a somewhat supportive to her daughters
>Han Kyuls' family
--Mother - sweet and very unique relationship with her adopted Han Kyul.. I hope all mothers will be like her..
--Granda - sometimes irritating but yet funny

>>>Waaahhhh!!! I'll miss the times that I'm refreshing the net just to lokk at the recaps and the uploads of videos... I'm so much SURE that The Coffee Prince will be the NUMBER ONE this time.. =) and I'll wait here in the Philippines.I'm sure they'll air it here.. even if I've watched it already, still, I'll keep my eyes on it.. =)
hope there will be another drama for Gong Yoo, Eun Hye, and add Ji-hoon...=)

>>>KUMAWO for the recaps... =)

Lol Gramps @ 167:
Just as well they brought it in the last episode then, too late to bring in the cancer storyline. I'm sorry my brain must be fried, it's dreadful that I'm even joking about this >__

Bravo Javabean for another job well done. I stayed up the whole night waiting for your summary, call me crazy but this series really is driving me into pure obsession. Every Tue and Wed, I open my shop late (I arrived at work at 1pm!) just waiting for the download to complete and read Javabean’s summary. Thanks Javabean for keeping us company these couple of weeks. it has been both entertaining and insightful.

I have mixed feelings when I watched the final episodes. Sad because it is ending and a little bit unsatisfied with the ending. Thank God we do not have another ending like Witch Amusement. I like how Javabean expressed herself at the last episode. I like the first half of the episode and kind of plateau toward the end. Everyone is having a good ending and HG and EC is left enjoying a cuppa smiling with each other shyly. I was really hoping for better closure than this. Even Mr. Hong has a closure …

Well, I could not complaint for I thoroughly enjoyed the whole 17 chapters. I have never hooked on a Korean drama series like I did with CP. CP is not something new but refreshing. Both the lead actor and actress are superb in their acting. At least the kissing scenes are not stiff and seemed more real than some of the Korean drama series I have watched, like “When Spring Comes”. CP touched a lot of issues about love, maturity, responsibility and love of the same gender. I felt that it is not the writer nor the director’s fault to make is seems as it is promoting love of the same gender nor attempt to tackle the issue in CP, innocently I would rather think that they want to portray a pure love between a man and a woman whom he thought was a man.
