And, finally. Here we are: the final episode!

I’m sad for two reasons: First, that Coffee Prince is over. And second, that the finale wasn’t nearly as good as it could have, or should have, been. Don’t get me wrong; it was a perfectly serviceable final episode. It was cute, and we had a happy ending. For that alone, it was fine. I’ll leave off commenting on the rest till the end.

FINAL EPISODE SUMMARY

Han Gyul and Eun Chan wake up from their night together feeling happy but bashful. Han Gyul is so flustered he hurries to dress as Eun Chan wakes up, and puts both legs through one pant leg, causing him to fall to the ground onto some conveniently dropped pillows.

Eun Chan knows her mother’s going to kill her when she finds out she spent the night with Han Gyul, but she’s not so panicked that she can’t first have breakfast with him. Han Gyul tells Eun Chan not to grow her hair or wear miniskirts when she’s in Italy: “If men ask if you have a boyfriend, tell them you’re married. No, just stay invisible.” Sobering to the fact that she’s leaving soon, he cautions her to take good care of herself. They’ll have to go on dates every day before she leaves; he’ll take her all the places she wanted to go to before.

Driving in to work together, Eun Chan gets a call from Eun Sae, who tells Eun Chan she owes her. Eun Sae covered for her, telling their mother that Eun Chan had left early for work.

Ha Rim sees them arriving to work together and immediately senses something different. With glee, he guesses the truth and tries to go around proving it. He manages to sneak up on them, and singsongs his congratulations to the couple.

Han Gyul goes out of his way to sneak a present to Eun Chan so she’ll find it while cleaning, which turns out to be a pair of shoes (for comfort, since baristas are always on their feet). Eun Chan wonders if it’s okay to accept, because there’s a saying that you shouldn’t give your lover shoes because they’ll run away from you — but Han Gyul has taken proper precautions, writing inside them: “You’re mine!” and signing with his name.

That night, Eun Chan falls asleep while on the phone with Han Gyul, and he leaves her on speakerphone — and awakens the next morning with a laugh to realize Eun Chan is still snoring into her phone. He hangs up and calls back to serenade her with the song “I Love You,” originally sung by Han Dong Joon.

On her last day of work, Eun Chan makes her sad goodbyes with everyone. Each of the Princes takes his turn to say a few last words, finding Eun Chan crying in her work locker. Min Yub is first, and gives her some cosmetics as a present, saying she’ll be very pretty when she does herself up. He tells her, “You know I really respect and like you, don’t you? Don’t worry about Angel and your mother, because I’ll look after them.”

Next is Sun Ki: “Take care of yourself, and come back safely. You’ll do a good job — I have faith in you.” For once, Ha Rim has the fewest words, tearing up as Eun Chan tells him how much she likes him, even if they’ve fought in the past. He cries, and leaves her with a goodbye letter without being able to say anything.

Eun Chan cries as she reads the note (song: Maximilian Hecker’s “I’ll Be a Virgin, I’ll Be a Mountain” from a previous episode):

“My Chan, have a good time studying abroad. I don’t know how I’ll stay cheerful after you leave. Since you can sleep and eat well wherever you go, that doesn’t worry me, but there’s just one thing that does — you and men. You’d better not be won over by some guy’s flowery words or killer smile. I’ll handle Han Gyul hyung over here, so don’t worry. If only you weren’t his girl, I could’ve tried pursuing you. My Chan, I’ll miss you. P.S. — dreams come true!”

Meanwhile, Han Sung and Yu Ju’s marriage has been going well. Yu Ju has taken special care to refrain from working or going out to meet friends to watch out for the baby, but still, she encounters trouble. She experiences pains that send her to the hospital, and (the implication is that) they lose the baby. Han Sung comforts her (without anger or resentment, merely worry).

Everyone’s sad to see Eun Chan go, starting with her family, the Coffee Princes, and of course, Han Gyul. Eun Chan goes to the airport alone to avoid a painful parting, especially with Han Gyul, and says her last goodbyes to him over the phone. Her last words before hanging up are a choked string of “I love you”s. (Song: “Sad Thing” by 어른아이 / Adult Child, posted previously.)

And then, we’re two years later.

Eun Chan’s voiceover reads the various messages she’s sent to Han Gyul over the past two years via postcards, which he has posted up on his refrigerator.

Her messages include:

“There are lots of handsome men here. I’ve got a lot of them chasing me around saying they like me. Still, you’re the most handsome of them all!…”

“I’m sleeping late these days, with the excuse that I don’t have a part-time job to go to. Did I come here to study, or play?…”

“But thanks to you and Grandmother, I’m learning a lot. It’s so interesting. Thank you, and love you. I’ll become an impressive woman and go back soon. I miss you. I really miss you! … I love you. Here’s a kiss for you!”

Han Gyul has been busy working with the company to franchise the next store — Coffee Princess.

Min Yub has been working as a model, while Eun Sae works with the behind-the-scenes staff. They’re still together, and at her suggestion, he’s changed his modeling name to simply “Hwang Min.” (Eun Sae’s nickname for him, though, is “Yub.” I wonder if part of her suggestion, aside from professional reasons, was so she gets to be the only one to call him that. It’s cute.) It’s nice to see her so proud of him for something, which is a nice change from their early relationship.

Han Gyul is eagerly counting down the days to Eun Chan’s return, so naturally he’s shocked and panicked when Eun Chan mentions the possibility of staying in Italy for another year to further her studies. It’s a great opportunity for her, her tuition will be covered, and she’d like to stay… Han Gyul yells an insistent no, and reminds her that she signed the contract with his grandmother to come back after two years. He’d even planned the opening of the new cafe to time with her arrival. She asks, “Then should I give it up and return?” and tells him she’ll forget the idea since he doesn’t like it… which makes Han Gyul feel guilty.

Ha Rim, who’s in charge of the interior design for the new Coffee Princess cafe, has been dating Byul for the past two years. I find her inclusion in the story pretty pointless, but I suppose she’s there to give some promise of a happy ending for Ha Rim. She brings up the fact that Ha Rim’s family is going through tough times (they had to close their hospital), which is another weirdly tacked-on story bit. But okay.

Likewise, a new girl walks into the Coffee Prince one day to earnestly request a job there, and the girl seems to serve the main purpose of giving Sun Ki a potential happy ending too. The girl (who also had a minor role in Dal Ja’s Spring) gets on Sun Ki’s nerves, until she responds to his grumbling in fluent Japanese, which is a welcome surprise. It’s also hinted that she’s sort of an Eun Chan version 2.0 — Ha Rim’s reaction to her appearance echoes the very words he first said about Eun Chan, she’s cheerful, she’s 24, and I think she’s supposed to be tomboyish (although the actress is too feminine for that to come across well).

Even Mr. Hong gets a storyline, meeting his long-ago love (the good liar) by chance and having a brief conversation with her. She’s married and has a child now, and I suppose his sense of closure comes when he gets up to leave, and she tells him, “Go on. This time I’ll be the one who stays behind.” He answers, “Sure, I’ll try being the first to go this time.” Closure’s good and all, but I never really felt his story was opened enough to require closing.

Han Sung and Yu Ju celebrate their two-year anniversary. They seem happy, but Yu Ju appears to still be affected by the baby they lost. Han Sung comes upon her as she stares at a set of baby shoes, and guesses what she’s thinking:

“Yu Ju, I don’t have any greed for more. With you always looking at me, and being by my side, and us both doing work we love… I don’t have any more to wish for.”

Han Sung tells her that he thinks they should stop going to the hospital, which I surmise is because they’ve been trying to become pregnant. Yu Ju suggests they go away on a trip together.

Meanwhile, at home alone, Han Gyul deliberates over his new dilemma — whether to persuade Eun Chan to come home quickly, or to let her further her studies as she wants. Finally, he comes to a decision, and calls her, leaving the message:

“You have to pay me back later for putting me through all this. Continue your studying, then come home. Just one more year. When you get this message, call me.”

He runs off, yelling, “Come home quickly! I miss you! Come back soon!”

Later, Han Gyul has a somewhat disappointing interview with a potential barista, who wants double the pay that was offered. After she leaves, Eun Chan arrives unexpectedly, rendering him stunned and speechless.

Eun Chan starts off by saying that she’s here to interview for the barista position, and lists all her qualifications. (Song: “Make Up” by 어른아이 / Adult Child.)

Eun Chan: “It sounded like that other applicant was asking for double the pay, but all you have to do is feed me. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a midnight snack. I’m good at cleaning, I’m strong, and I make really great coffee. I also have an excellent history as an international barista. I do pretty well.”
Han Gyul: “More than skill, we need someone with a devoted work ethic.”
Eun Chan: “I’m incredibly devoted. If you just say so nicely, I can do the cleaning, cooking, dishes, and everything for you.”

After the initial gladness at seeing each other again, Han Gyul is (mildly) upset that she came back without saying anything, and for putting him through such worry, thinking she’d be gone another year. She assures him that she won’t leave him alone ever again: “Even if you told me to leave now, I won’t. I’ve got to stick by your side every day from now on. I won’t leave you for even a minute.” Mollified, Han Gyul asks, “Twenty-four hours? Night and day, every day? Then we’ll have to get married quickly.”

It appears she misled him purposely with her suggestion of staying another year, and had his parents and grandmother in on the secret. Eun Chan’s kept in contact with them all this time (Han Gyul’s father even met her in Italy when he traveled there on business), and his parents are firmly in favor of the relationship. Even his grandmother can’t hide her gruffness too much: “She asked me to keep her return a secret, but she’s with Han Gyul right now. They’re just crazy about each other.”

And naturally, everyone at Coffee Prince is thrilled to see her (and shocked at her new look).

Additional thoughts:

This episode left me smiling widely and feeling good. It was a nice wrap-up to a series that turned out to be surprisingly more insightful, fun, and engaging than I’d hoped when I first started watching. I re-read what I’d written in response to the first episode, and was particularly happy to be proved wrong in initially supposing the series held little promise for profound meaning.

As a final episode, I didn’t particularly find this 17th hour to be anything extraordinary. I seem to be in the minority in having absolutely no problem with the “__ years later” device, at least on principle. Some series misuse the time skip in a lazy or poor way, and some use it very well. My disappointment with the last episode has nothing to do with the fact that they skipped two years. It’s merely that this episode felt like a (very, very) long epilogue. They could have cut it in half and been fine. It felt like a tacked-on extension to a series that had been so popular that its very talented director and writer were forced to artificially lengthen its material to fill an extra hour. Imagine that.

But when all’s said and done, I thoroughly enjoyed Coffee Prince, and didn’t tire of it at any point through its conclusion — which is remarkable, given the pure statistics: seventeen episode summaries, twenty novel recaps, and an additional ten posts on miscellaneous news items and behind-the-scenes interviews. That’s a whopping total of forty-seven posts, and I won’t even dare to do a word count, but I’m guessing it must top out at more than 60,000 words, at least. That’s the size of a novel.

And the comments from everyone! All 2,830 of them. That makes Coffee Prince nothing short of a phenomenon. Thanks to everyone for participating in what has been an overwhelmingly pleasant fandom (as far as I can tell), and here’s to hoping it’s not too long before we get another series (and fandom) that’s as widely entertaining and engaging as this has been.

is it too late to leave any comments?... ah well, i watched like 6 times Coffee Prince, its my favourite drama to date... and i;ve just started to watch Korean dramas like 2 months and friends have been strongly recomending this drama.... its not the typical korean/taiwanese drama, so i guess thats why i like it so much...

initially, i didnt like it, but after the 2nd episode, man it really grows on you... after finish watching this drama, was pastering my other half to get me the DVD.. LOL...

OMG!!!! I am addicted to this show. I just can't remember how many times I have re-watched CP. I just can't help keep watching over and over again.

And thx for the lovely re-caps. Thx a bunch for the drama rating as well. If you had not posted your rating, i wouldn't have watched this show and would have missed the chance of watching great show like CP. Hats off to all the actors, directors, writers and whosoever related to this show.

However the ending would have better showing Han Gyul and Eun Chan getting married ;).

I LOVE THIS DRAMA!!!!! >_____<
i'm sad but thrilled at the same time that it's ended.
even though i'd love to see a season 2, i'm scared it won't be as perfect as the first. so i'm happy with the way it ended.
but how EC didn't answer HK about the marriage thing bothered me. *sigh* oh well, i'll just leave the rest to my imagination ^^

Contrary to what others say, I love the ending. It was a clever way to end this drama. Had the writer chose to end it with Han Kyul / Eun Chan getting married, I would have been very satisfied and forgotten about this drama by this time. But the lack of closure (...is like strong coffee leaving a bitter aftertaste in my mouth) leaves so much room for imagination that up to now (1-1/2 years later) I've been thinking about how it should have ended. And the way they ended the drama leaves room for a sequel...which I am anticipating.

It's the best drama I've ever seen. I love the actors, the acting, the music and all the details...its perfect! In this part of Asia where I live, we are mostly exposed to American soaps and after watching Coffee Prince, the soaps that I've seen so far pale in comparison to CP. Unfortunately, CP raise the bar in terms of my k-drama expectations so much so that up to now, I cannot appreciate other k-dramas. The actors are not as good looking, the scripts are not as interesting, the acting is not as good and the music is not as moving...sigh....

Maybe if I get to see Gong Yoo in a new drama (I hope he makes one as soon as he gets out of MS) with the same PD, I'll get over this addiction!

I hope this comment was not too late.. Actually, i knew about Coffee Prince since August last year when my country-Indonesia has aired this drama but i'm late to leave a comment because i just have time to leave a comment today..I LOVE THIS DRAMA VERY MUCH, COFFEE PRINCE IS THE BEST KOREAN DRAMA I'VE EVER WATCHED.. I even bought a DVD. I read about this drama from Asian Magazine that write about CP 2007 ago& i cant believe when my country aired this drama too..I love Han Gyul & Eun Chan , i want to see both of them getting married in the end but it never happened.. So, i hope MBC will make C0FFEE PRINCE PART 2 WITH THE SAME CAST AFTER GONG YOO FINISHING HIS MILITARY SERVICE IN SEPT 2009.. Please MBC, MAKE THE SEQUEL.. The ending was good but actually I'm not satisfied enough with the ending, i expected The passionate kissing scene between Han Gyul & Eun Chan, because Han Gyul miss her so much, not only the simple hugging.. I want more like kissing or marriage.. Yoon Eun Hye will be star in "Lady Castle", but i think Coffee Prince is the most memorable drama she ever had & the highest rating from her other drama.. Remember what she said that she felt really died after Coffee Prince end .. G0NG Y00 & EUN HYE, i hope you both will make another drama together because you're the SWEET C0UPLE i've ever watch.. C0FFEE PRINCE ROCK !!! ;-) i'm very SAD this drama is over ..^^ but i hope there will be another sequel ..

I know it's probably too late to post here but I just wanted to thank you dramabeans for your great, well-written blog, especially for the Coffee Prince series, and to let you know that it is still getting appreciated.
I've been reading your CP blogs since finishing the show and it has been a nice way just to put everything together and read your thoughts (and everyone else's!).

And if you are reading, GONG YOO: YOU ARE GORGEOUS IN EVERY WAY!!!

I'm new to K-dramas - CP being the first i've watched. A friend of mine gave me a copy of CP, saying it was highly recommended and I have to admit... Korean series with subtitles.... I was very sceptical at first!!!
But CP just blew me away. I was instantaneously hooked and watched the entire series in almost 24 hours!!!

My work has been suffering since stumbling across this great show, desperately trying to get my hands on anything and everything CP/GY, but it's ok because waiting for Gong Yoo to finish his military service is going to be worth it!!!

I've just recently gotten into K-dramas, with Coffee Prince being the second I've watched (And Boys Before Flowers being the first.) I can't help but hope that they may arrange for a sequel because Coffee Prince was just absolutely incredible; It used some of the drama cliches without using them in a way that WAS cliched. The soundtrack was absolutely outstanding; it's the best I've ever heard for any work.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart for these episode summaries; they were well-written and full of insight for me, first time Korean drama viewer. (I've watched a lot of Japanese drama previously, but for Coffee Prince beats them all hands down! xD)

I was also grateful for the conversations you translated and transcribed as sometimes as I was watching (with S2's fansub) I'd be like, "Why is she so mad? They're just horsing around?" Or "What on earth did he mean by that?" And I'd turn to your episode re-caps and just feel the light bulb slowly blink into life. And I found this site completely by chance =o

Not that I'm complaining about S2! Translating is HARD; I find translating between my two native tongues (English and Swedish) difficult and they're at least on the same branch of the language tree. (What's with all these weird analogies?)

So kisses and hugs to S2 too! =*

Coffee Prince is my new favourite drama, and you and this site totally kick ass! And I will be watching more Korean dramas in the future =)

This was an amazing drama for me. The characters, acting, and pacing really resonated with me.. I am relatively new to Korean Dramas but I have watched many Korean films and if other dramas are half as good as CP I will be satisfied.

Two nights ago finding nothing interesting to watch on TV, I chanced upon a commercial about re-runs of some K-dramas over at the Animax channel. Because the all K-dramas were purported to have been translated in my language, I stayed in time to watch the second episode of Coffee Prince. Not long after I finished the show, I was at my laptop trying to find some clips over at you tube and found some mushy scenes from episode 10. Itching to know more, I googled until I found your your site. Now a sucker that I am for spoilers, I was hooked reading the episode summaries from cover to cover--in less than a day! It's like finding a good book-- you can't put it down until your done reading it.

I could say I may also be as passionate as you when I find a movie or TV series that I really, really love but nothing compares to your devotion to translate this passion into written form so that it gets across to people who feel (or even don't feel) the same way about a show. Some bloggers just do what they do for the sake of having something to blab about, but dramabeans is undeniably written with finesse and intelligence in mind: from using impeccable English grammar to providing stills for better understanding of a scene, from providing insights about Korean norm and traditions to your smart opinion on just about everything concerning the show. Reading through your writings feels like it's almost as if I watch the show unfolding before me.

And for that you gain a fan in me. And for Coffee Prince. Cheers to a worthy blog!

Thank you for the recap. I think you would agree with me that CP is very re-watchable and recappable because of the little things that you do not notice the first time you watch it and get pleasantly surprised the next time. I have been in CP fandom for 3 years and I have not come across a better Drama since. Maybe Dal Ja or Que Sera Sera can be on par with CP, but then again they came before CP. And for 3 years, as I know and experience more things, I get a whole lot more insights from CP. So it is like CP really makes everyone from young to old....think. The old may just get different insights because of their knowledge. :)

i was really happy to find ur recaps in here..i have to go to my boarding house everytime the week starts so it's like i missed out a lot of episodes...it was so great to be back at the coffee shop world again..and to think i'm really a coffee addict!

hmm..i just really love this series! it's so cute and refreshing in some ways..can't wait to see it again!

Am surprised postings 3 years later. and here i am posting, too.

Whenever I am bored with the asiand dramas I'm watching, i turn to my all-time favs... CP and MNIKSS, and also DJS. But I would have watched CP a lot more times. I'm even re-reading jb's recaps.

CP is really like coffee, so addicting even years later.

i've heard about coffee prince and wanted to check it out. wow, awesome recaps!! i read them all while eating popcorn ^^
i'm surprised that i'm not the only person checking this drama out so long after it came out, but i suppose coffee prince is very popular. i will watch the episodes starting tomorrow!
i love reading recaps before watching the real drama--i can understand better what has happened and i dont feel that the drama has been spoiled for me. thanks so much for your amazing website and great recaps!!!!!!! :D:D

i finished watching this drama today! and I LOVE IT ALOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i'm very very thankful for ur recaps coz it helped me alot to understand the drama....lot of sites had taken down CP videos with eng subs...so i had to watch some episodes with spanish subs....i cldn't understand a word!!! =P and then i found ur recaps!!! THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH!!!!!!! this is such an amazing wonderful romantic drama with really really cute romantic scenes! Loved it loads!!!!!!!! =D

This happens to be the drama I watch every summer and I just finished it again this year .I've seen many dramas so far but none have been able to match the uniqueness of Coffee Prince.I enjoyed reading your summaries as they helped continue my CF fandom... three years later.

im only 13 n asian (viet) girl but i watched this like 2 yrs ago n i luv luved it and there sure is a LOT of kissing in these eps n i agree this ep rlly wraps up everything since all the other kdramas i've watched has had bad endings which just left me sitting there hating it or wanting more :P n yeah i know i may be the last person to comment n

BTW, thanks for your recaps. They really helped me understand where the translations failed. Also, I'm so over anything currently on US television. I've discovered KDramas and it'd be hard to go back! Now, on to the next show! It proabably won't be as funny, romantic, sweet, and smart as CP though. :p

I don't get what's so great about this series. Can someone explain it to me? I thought there were lots of dramas better than this one (i.e. Personal Taste, Iris, What's up Fox).

Was it the I'll love you even though I'm not gay theme?

rereading your Coffee Prince recaps because I'm a Coffee Prince fanatic and I really want to watch Gong Yoo's new movie but I can't.

So in withdrawal from lack of Gong Yoo!!

dam, I didn't know I could get addicted to kdrama, but I guess thats what happens when you watch coffee prince.

Here's a bit about me .

I'm a 26 year old male working in the government, and I loved this series.

I think it changed the type of girl I would want to go out with too... lol. tomboyish girls ftw....

Sigh, I cried, I laughed, and I enjoyed this series a lot.

I watched this again. I NEVER watch shows twice. I saw it a year ago and enjoyed it so much (as a new k-drama fan). I probably will watch it AGAIN next year. Thank you dramabeans for making the experience so complete. I became a big fan of both the lead actors. I also really loved the movie Gong Yu was in about finding lost loves. An actor with amazing on-screen chemistry. Although this page is years old, your fans still appreciate this blog.

CP is my second k drama. I love it so much. It's like that breezy summer fling you had that was all good and leaves you forever a little wistful. Gong yoo was perfectly casted and did a beautiful job with that role. 5 years down the line, CP Remains fresh and a real hard act to follow. It left me feeling breathless, exhilarated and happy for DAYS when I finished it. I just can't wait for gong yoo to light up the screen again cos I can't find his movies in my country

The finale episode is the weakest as we wait too long for the couple to be reunited, but all ends well.
Series thoughts: Coffee Prince shows love can cross boundaries (gender, economic status) and triumph. The love story is beautifully portrayed and makes Coffee Prince worth watching.
The two leads embody the main characters perfectly; Gong Yoo as Choi Han-gyul and Yoon Eun-hye as Go Eun-chan. I bought that Eun-chan could be mistaken for a man as she does not look or dress in a feminine fashion. It was wonderful to watch their friendship and love blossom. Han-gyul struggles with his love for Eun-chan as it challenges his concepts (man-woman). The lead actor, Gong Yoo, goes all-in on his character, Han-gyul, playing crucial moments with intensity and elevating the entire drama. The lead actress, Yoon Eun-hye, manages to be sympathetic as her character Eun-chan continues her gender lie longer than necessary. The supporting characters of the drama did not grab me so their on-screen stories were not of much interest, lowering the overall of the effect of Coffee Prince as a whole.
When Han-gyul finally allows himself to love Eun-chan regardless of gender (episode 10) it is the best moment of the drama and truly touching.

I love this movie so much,that I'm always eager to know what will happen in the next episode.They were all beautiful couples $ I love Han Gyul $ Eun Chan 's love story.Thank you dramabeans for the summary,u made me more than happy.I'm so excited.Thanks again.

I was in field band in high school, did a three-week trip to Australia and NZ before 10th grade, and a study abroad in the UK in college, so I'm no stranger to packing, so when she was packing for Italy by cramming clothes into that Big Freaking Sack with her feet, part of me was screaming, "YOU ROLL YOUR CLOTHES, IDIOT! THAT'S HOW YOU GET THE MOST INTO THE LEAST AMOUNT OF SPACE!" and, something I learned the hard way in the UK, "Half the clothes, twice the money!" Definitely take HG up on his offer to bring winter clothes with him when he visits. Trust me on this one!

Her mother and sister with the food was hilarious. I was the same way when I was coming back from the UK, wanting to cram my luggage full of Cadbury Drinking Chocolate, Alpina, scones from Marks and Spencer, and many, many, many teas you just can't get here in the States. I've managed to find a source for the Drinking Chocolate, and there are some decent teas here, but, alas, I've yet to find decent soft scones. xp

i ended it today. fabulous drama.. i am so happy..but i was finding something to pause my craze of watching k dramas for a while....but i am happy i was able to find CP. because i have seen almost 20 k dramas continuously... its time to stop now for a while.. but will be back shortly... when there will be more k dramas like (coffee prince) .. looking forward ... love u all viewers and javabeans, dramabeans... sarangeyaaa k drama world.... :)
