IP Bans
by | August 23, 2007 | 53 Comments

Another boring blog admin post.

I’ve banned some IPs from this site. I was looking through my apache error logs and was a bit alarmed to see persistent attempts to access unauthorized parts of my server. I hope I’m not misinterpreting the data, but from what I could tell, some people in China really, really, REALLY want my Coffee Prince songs. From my limited ability to surf Chinese sites, I think someone went and posted direct song links on a highly trafficked Chinese forum, which goes a long way to explaining server overload issues. Ever since I made changes to limit access, I’ve been getting pounded with thousands of attempts to hack in to grab the files.

Note: I am NOT restricting them to be mean. The alternative is that I take the files down completely and stop providing any music altogether. Okay, you’ve done and pissed me off. Coffee Prince songs are down. They will be down until I figure out a good way to put them back up or stop being mad, whichever comes first.

So: If I’ve inadvertently banned valid IPs, shoot me an email, although I doubt it because I only banned IPs that had attempted unauthorized access at least a hundred times. Sankyoo.

oh, perhaps they didnt know english so they were posting direct links everywhere. lol

  2. javabeans

Yeah, I figured that was a reason so I wasn’t too mad — I was the one who posted them in the first place. But what pissed me off is that they’ve posted things I’ve never made public — which means someone went in and accessed something they shouldn’t have and then posted the links to other stuff. And I can see the repeated hundreds (thousands) of attempts to hack in after I’d taken down the links a few weeks ago. Not cool regardless of the language.

  3. Taylor

Understandable… its just too bad for us. I love the music you’ve incorporated in every posts. Hope it will be up soon, but its better to protect yourself from hackers.

  4. tooizzy

I agree why would they even want to hack in? I don’t get it. Are they trying to sell it in China then? O_o

  5. javabeans

Taylor, don’t worry, the third-party download links (zshare, sendspace) are still valid. I’ve just taken the actual files offline so nothing will stream.

  6. Iranian Espresso

Be Patient and Strong Dear Javabeans
    Dear, GOD Bless You.
Good Luck every where, every time.

  7. Paula

Now that pisses me off too that people are hacking into the server. I used to have a domain also, so I hate hot linking, cracking into private files, etc. I, as well as others, enjoy the music that you’ve incorporated in your posts and I’ve been able to broaden my music taste as well! And for them to wreck such a pleasure… :( Be strong Javabeans! Show ‘em who’s boss! Aja! :)

  8. mei

Isn’t this what happens when you become popular and everyone loves you(maybe a bit too much), they suddenly turn on you…wanting more and more and more. Reminds me of the Super Junior and Elves fiascoes. They more adoration they have, the more selfish they become. Sorry for the trouble they’ve caused, but there doesn’t seem to be much modesty on the internet.

  9. moochi

i’ve noticed that for previous posts you switched the direct dl to zshare dl links (good stuff!)

sigh…a lot of blogs i have been visiting lately are cutting down on uploads and many others because of random visitors. i thought you would have taken down the links a lot earlier, thank you once again TT_TT

i think those ppl want to make an unofficial ost and sell it somewhere..perhaps…
    anyways don’t give up!

  10. 10 canyayasis

Don’t EXACTLY know what all this means – but i’ll channel your anger for you!
now i’m really, really mad – so YOU don’t have to be – breath and sort through it
and i’ll yell at my clients this afternoon – but NOT at the Judge or the jury.

  11. 11 melissa

    wow
that sucks that these people are trying to hack and get into things they shouldnt be getting into
i dont see why people dont just download the music and post it somewhere else instead of hot linking your page…
i hate when people do things like that.
i think if what you want to do is take down the direct download links or whatever, its your choice, you put them up so u have the choice to take them down when people dont follow your rules
i hope things change…and i hope you can someday not worry about these kind of site problems…because we all enjoy your summaries and you rock and dont deserve to have to work so hard to berid of these people

    -Melissa

  12. 12 tooizzy

ARGH!!!! (as a granade is thrown at the culprits, KABOOMM!!) Sorry for the violence there. Now I feel better though. Thank you so much for putting up the links in the first place I listened to them every day and opened up a whole new genre for me, so a big THANK YOU!!

    Are you ok on donations?

  13. 13 tooizzy

    JavaBeans I’m Marizabstreasuretrove

  14. 14 Ima

Geez, another case of lost in translation… just hang in there. Some cyber netizen are just too lazy and inconsiderate following the standard protocol of blogging and linking (no matter how many times you warn them). We deeply appreciate all the hardwork that you put up on this site. Looking forward to more of your music selections and recommendations.

  15. 15 invisibelle

Have you considered streaming them from offsite? I know it’s not ideal, but a site like imeem.com isn’t a terrible alternative.

It’s too bad people are doing that, though — there are tons of other places they could get the same songs, why pick on you? :(

  16. 16 mangoicy

Tsk, all these technical issues… I feel your frustration.. No wonder people are willing to pay tons to have these kind of matters taken care of by the pros. I feel sorry for you for going through all the troubles, when all you do is taking good care of us. Unfortunately, a virtual pats on the back is all I can offer right now. Feel better!

  17. 17 lain

these kind of things can’t be helped i guess.
but it’s too bad that a lot of these good sites are banned in china for no good reason.

    oh wells =(
    be strong

  18. 18 secret admirer

Oh no, not again! Internet piracy… Arghhhhh!
Seriously, javabeans.. you need a dedicated IT person to help with all the tech aspects… Gramps? (i know, i am picking on you again!)
Hang in there… Coffee Prince is around for only one more week, then maybe blog life will return back to normal afterward. **smile**

  19. 19 javabeans

I know, it’s a pain, right? Honestly, I’ve never really cared that much even if people were taking stuff I’ve written or posted without giving credit, or if they were sharing from this site, etc., JUST AS LONG AS this place worked fine. I was probably a lot more lax than I should’ve been. But as soon as I started running into problems, I figured it was doing me no good being naive and I put some proper security measures in place — and it wasn’t until those offenders were blocked that I could see just how MANY of them there are (because they’d all of a sudden appear as errors). They’re everywhere! It’s amazing. My outgoing bandwidth has decreased by more than half ever since the leechers were blocked. I’m still wondering how this site managed to take 4.5GB of outgoing transfer in one hour without crashing. (And yet they still keep trying to get in. They’re trying really hard, I’ll give them props for persistence. But you’d think they could stop and wonder that if it’s this much work to steal from me, how much work is it for me to provide it all in the first place?) Anyway, I’m not upset anymore (that lasted all of about twenty minutes, lol), but I’m keeping the CP song links down. Maybe after the show is done, I’ll put them back up. Or maybe not, who knows?

    JABABEANS, FIGHTING!!!!

  21. 21 Miss Paula

Wow, sorry to hear about the hackers, javabeans. Well, since I am writing I figure I’ll take the opportunity to THANK YOU EVER SO MUCH for this Amazingly Awesome blog you have here. Thank you for being *so lightning fast* with updating Coffee Prince. And the songs are such a treat. It doesn’t even bum me out that I have to wait for the subtitled episodes because your fast updating keeps me in the loop. Thank you also for your blog entry on the kdrama, Soulmate. I started watching that and it’s pretty good as well. I’ll trust anything you deem worthy of watching. :O) Live long, fellow kdrama enthusiast!
    -Miss Paula from NJ, USA

  22. 22 shel

TSK TSK!!! So sorry to hear about your dilema….anyway, take a deep breath and just hang in there! We’re all here for you… mwah!!! Javabeans fighting!!!

  23. 23 jemigirl

Javabean….that’s too bad you had to take down the music…
but i say you do what you gotta do~ still appreciate your postings..and all the discussions!! as the Koreans would say..” fighting!! “..

  24. 24 ginnie

    OH…Javabeans..That’s very rude of them!

If you need help verifying or reading the chinese sites, shoot me an email. I’ll post something on those Chinese sites or PM the hackers…..if these are language barriers, a warning may be helpful.

    Fighting!

  25. 25 bethany

    What. A. Pain.

thanks for being aware and keeping the site going!

  26. 26 tuesdhei

sorry to hear that you’re having that “direct link” problem again… it’s so easy to download — why don’t they just download it and upload it on their own and have their own link right? that’s what i did coz i know it’ll be a pain in the ass on your part if i don’t. as for the language barrier, i don’t think that’s the reason coz if they don’t understand why would they be here in the first place — they understood… they’re just too greedy probably… be strong javabeans!

  27. 27 Sevenses

Oh, eurgh. Unfortunately the internet is full of people like that. (In passing, how hard is it to get the songs you’re providing? I’m sure they can get it from the gazillion forums around…) I personally think you’re going above and beyond to make the CP experience real for many of us non-Koreans. *hands you a platter of virtual brownies (or blueberries, if you’re not into chocolate)*

On a purely curious-about-the-technical-cause-I-have-no-clue note, how can you tell if hackers are hackers? Isn’t the whole point of hacking so that you don’t notice what’s going on?

  28. 28 hua

Stupid hotlinkers and hackers! Ban ban ban ban ban! I’ve handled a little forum and haven’t had hackers (knock on wood) but some spammers. It’s an odd rush of power when I add IP addresses to the ban list…. hee hee hee.
I can read Chinese fairly well if you ever need help navigating Chinese forums, Javabeans (I’ve left my email if you need to contact me). Kudos to you and all that you do!

  29. 29 Eve

ugh that sucks – I’m sorry for all the trouble putting up songs has caused you.

  30. 30 nhetski

sorry to hear of your IP woes javabeans! and thank u for not giving up :)

    God Bless!

  31. 31 Anonymous

you know i dont think it was a good idea to tell us that ur banning ip’s now
because those hackers will just use other ip addresses to get in.
and then you’ll have to block those.
    right?
or am i completely retarded in the world of high tech coding and all that stuff?

  32. 32 PixieJewel

There is a group of people in China mainly download things to produce pirates dvd and I have a feeling that they are hacking to get information for such reason. I have seen so many WithS2 work being sold by our local pirates dvd peddler. I really enjoy the collection of songs from CP that you have posted. Thank you for all the work you put in. I hope that you can work out something for us genuine lover of CP. FYI, I love your thoughts that you put in when you summaries each episodes, it kinda make me feel that I am not alone analysing whatever I’m viewing. Thank Javabeans for eveything. I come in your site at least couple times a day to check for new updates. Bravo and keep up the good work ^_^

  33. 33 javabeans

Anonymous, it doesn’t matter because the files aren’t there anymore. So they can try with different IPs or whatever, but the files aren’t up so they’ll just be wasting their time.

  34. 34 teokong

Sorry to hear about your IP problem. Those moron hackers!!!! (sorry to vent) Sad that I won’t be able to hear any CP songs whenever I feel like reading CP summaries again. It’s ok….I can live without it. Big THANK YOU for all your hard work. Aja, aja, fighting….

  35. 35 Marzy

sarah hwaiting!!! but that’s major stuff hacking into ur site. yikes. we greatly appreciate ur efforts. ^^ i hope you can find a good resolution to this.

  36. 36 Marie

Javabeans, once again, I want to thank you for your work dedicated for the audience’s deeper understanding of Korean (/Japanese) dramas. I really appreciate all the time you take to analyze and summarize what has happened in each episode, especially the fabulous Coffee Prince, which is fantastic in every aspect. With popularity comes the negative aspects, but even when you took down the direct links, having Sendspace/Megaupload links to your songs is still greatly appreciated. Be strong, Javabeans! :)

  37. 37 KT

Do what you gotta do, girl! We all LOVE your blog, so whatever you gotta do, just do it.

  38. 38 thunderbolt

How scary that they can access your private files, yeeks!

I own two domains and a big chunk of my time everyday is spent on checking for spambots, suspect registrations and IP addresses. It’s a real pain. Not to mention going online and scouring for tips everywhere on how to better protect my sites. It’s like a battle and I can’t let my guard down even for a day. I totally feel for you, sarah. *hugs*

  39. 39 finnz

Total respect for your patience and determination to keep this blog running altho there are so many obstacles. Kudos!
Wish as a reader I could do more to help out – but all i can do is to drop a note to show my appreciation for your passion to keep us (one of those unlucky korean illiterate ones) informed bout the k-world and help me re-live those k-dramas with your lovely summaries.
Hope you can keep this up as long as you can cuz u know ur site rawks!
    ^_^

  40. 40 finnz

oh and btw – i think yesasia has gotta start paying u some additional $$ cuz i think they must have gotten quite a number of new customers from your recommendations – and i am one of them!
    heeheeheee

  41. 41 Gramps

    40 finnz and others
Since javabeans doesn’t like talking about money, though she must need to spend quite a lot of it to meet the bandwidth greed even of her legitimate users, can I just remind people that the way to ensure her site benefits from any YesAsia purchases you make (even maybe ones that aren’t directly recommended here) is to click through to YesAsia from the ad on this site when you want to make a purchase. E.g. if you go to the blog home page and scroll down the r.h. column you will find a suitable YesAsia link there.

  42. 42 Hannah

Its your website so you can do whatever you want with it.
Thanks for providing things for us though =)

  43. 43 addicted

I know nothing regarding website maintenance but have you consider making a “members only” access to the music you posted? Not sure if it’ll be more work on your end. I for one, would be willing to pay to be a member, this website is that awesome.
In any case, I’m very thankful and appreciate all you’ve done. I wish people were more considerate.

  44. 44 hucm90

Dear javabeans, your blog is very popular in China, and even your Coffee Prince novel is being translated into chinese.

I am Chinese, and you may have another sight afer reading my opinion.

First, i don’t think any chinese want to do harm to your site, the just be used of do things like these. In China, run a site is not easy(because of the legal problem and the money problems), most of sites are run by companies. And, most servers can easily overcomes the IPs floods as you face now (even we use some simple hacking tools). In another aspect, the IPs floods may be a good data for its shareholders. So, most chinese didn’t realize posting urls of files from a site will lead to a problem.

Second, any good resources will be spread quicky in China, especially K-drama resources. It is not hard to find 10 or 20 forums discusing the k-dramas. As one get the url of your blog’s BGM, he will post the url in a forum (i have done things like this before, but it is a daum blog), and the url will be posted in 10 or 20 other forums quickly. Totally, thousands of people will down it. Moreover, some people will set the url as he own blog’s BGM (as many blog in china didn’t support uploading BGM). If the url is from a big site (myspace, daum, naver, ect) , the results of it may not be serious. But once the url is from your site, your will face a big problem.

    i propose my suggestion here:
    1. Creat a blog in a big site.
    2. Upload songs into that blog, may be some forum will be ok too.
    3. Get the url of songs.
    4. Set the url as BGM in this blog.

Afer these steps, anyone try to download BGMs will visit other site, your site will stood away from download attempts. and this is what we do in some blog in China.

thank u for puting up with my poor writing skills.

  45. 45 Sevenses

Javabeans, I was doing some reading the other day and found out that the Chinese government likes to monitor everyone’s internet usage and sites people visit. In order to do this, they place large amounts of users behind a blanket IP (this is how they were able to block or filter entire sites, like http://www.livejournal.com). Maybe the masses of people from the same IP is due to that reason? Then again, maybe the hackers are from the same region.
Anyway, I hope your problem gets solved soon.

  46. 46 n

Anyone who gets video and music files online knows enough english to know what they are or are not doing. Even if you had ‘no hotlinking’ in big bold letters, they would understand, but one person not caring will just spread the links anyway. So I’d rely on freehost sites, so your server doesn’t get overloaded.
Your site is very thorough and well-made, so don’t make it more stressful than it needs to be. ^_^

  47. 47 RG

because of those hackers, other people who are innocent are being included in this mess :(

since this is your site u can do whatever u want so go ahead, I respect that! I also want to thank u for sharing those coffee prince songs in the previous days before this mess happen :)

one more thing, hope ur feeling of anger subside!

  48. 48 yakatoo

damn those crazy hackers!! but thanks for at least giving us a way to access the great stuff you’ve gathered. appreciate it. :D

  49. 49 kyotoji

    This is really bad.
I mean those “hackers”… but think think… ya… maybe they do not understand English…
I really appreciate that what you have done for us.
And also thanks for “informing” us – these “innocent groups” on this.

  50. 50 tohru

    Hi
I don’t think you should put the songs back up. It will just create more problems for you. If you still want to post songs, then you should continue using other sites, such as sendspace.

I don’t like it when those people try to hack into other servers to steal links. They should know not to do that. I worked with other websites and we had the same problems of people from Asia (mainly China) trying to direct link to our files. It’s become such a pain!

Even if they do not understand English, it is still no excuse for them trying to hack into your files and steal your links. They should know that is WRONG.

I love your website!!! Thank you for sharing so much with us.
