An early look at The Man Who Was Superman

On the 28th, reporters were invited to check out the filming location and talk with the main players in the upcoming movie The Man Who Was Superman, starring Jeon Ji Hyun and Hwang Jung Min.

Described as a “cheerful and warm human drama,” the movie stars Jeon in a complete turnaround from her usual image; she even ditched her trademark long straight hair for an unkempt permed style with bangs. The character doesn’t wear makeup, doesn’t dress in frilly or feminine clothes, drinks a lot, and smokes: “In a word, she’s got a dirty image.” Furthermore, she seems something of a cynic, dismissing emotions like sympathy and sentimentality as pointless and ineffectual.

As a small-scale producer, Jeon’s character starts filming a new subject in hopes of bringing her success and fame as a documentary producer; the guy is Hwang Jung Min’s character, who believes he’s Superman who’s just momentarily misplaced his superpowers.

Jeon said of her costar: “More than just as an actor, Hwang Jung Min was so comfortable as a person and treated me well” and “It would be great if all male actors could be like him.” Meanwhile, he said of her: “It’s a little disappointing that our relationship in the film isn’t a romantic one. At the outset, I was more nervous [than her].”

Open Thread #6

open-thread-6

Don’t really have a “topic” to kick off this Open Thread today… So I’ll just ramble (and you all say, “Don’t you always?”).

It’s raining. Ooh, my favorite weather. I plan to get lots of “curling up with a good book” done this evening.

One of those books may include Stephen Colbert’s I Am America (And So Can You!). I wasn’t intending to buy this book — I’d flipped through Jon Stewart’s America (The Book) and wasn’t tempted enough to buy — but Colbert’s is zingy and hysterically funny. But like a five-year-old boy with an insane curiosity and too much sugar who bounces around going boing-y, boing-y, boing-y asking questions like “Why is the sky blue? Why do people have funny bones? Are we having chicken for dinner tonight? Why does the earth move in a circle? Where does light go at night? I can touch my tongue to my nose wanna see wanna seeee?” Or a really excited puppy.

Looky what I found — Mixed-up Investigative Agency NGs! (The one with Min-chul is cute since he’s such a badass.)

What’s up everyone?

Mixed-up Investigative Agency: Case 15

What an excellent episode. By far the best to date. Episode 15 had everything — adventure, mystery, suspense, emotion, depth, and yet another well-done cliffhanger ending.

In fact, it rather felt like a mini-movie more than an episode of television because of the way it skillfully brought the tension to a head; and yet, there were still those trademark Mixed-up small moments of goofiness and wit. It wasn’t till the episode finished that I realized I’d spent the hour all tensed up in anxiety. With just one more episode to go, do our fearless friends finally find the treasure??!?

Lee Junki gets lots of love from Thai fans

What a good year to be Lee Junki.

He headed a successful drama (Time of Dog and Wolf), won some awards, put out his latest film May 18 (aka Splendid Holiday), and is set to headline the anticipated upcoming Iljimae adaptation. He’s really skyrocketed to fame in the two years since his breakout role in the record-setting film King and the Clown — a role that almost went to Coffee Prince’s most winning Prince Jin Harim, aka actor Kim Dong Wook.

Now he’s the first Hallyu star to have an official fan club in Thailand. The fan club officially opens on the 30th, and Lee Junki will participate at the opening ceremony, which occurs in downtown Bangkok.

Then, on December 3, he’ll visit the large northern city of Chiang Mai for the Christmas-lights ceremony, which is an annual event observed by the Thai royalty. (He’s also the first Hallyu star to be invited to this event.)

Then, on December 5, he will attend an event, also in Chiang Mai, celebrating King Bhumibol’s 80th birthday.

Wow, do they love him in Thailand or what?

How was 2007 for you?

Wow, 2007 really flew by. I can’t believe it’s almost over. And I can’t believe I’ve been at this blog for nearly a year.

This time of year inevitably means people start busting out the year-end lists of best and worst. For instance, this poll at Naver listed the Top 11 Dramas of the past year, along with the worst 5. I’m glad to see that while the list includes some expected names (No. 3 Coffee Prince and No. 11 Thank You), it also gives recognition to lesser-watched but very good shows like Mixed-up Investigative Agency (No. 8).

The rest of the list goes: (1) White Tower, (2) Time of Dog and Wolf, (4) Que Sera Sera, (5) HIT, (6) Unstoppable High Kick, (7) Conspiracy in the Court, (9) My Man’s Woman, and (10) Devil.

The Worst Dramas, on the other hand: (1) Moon Hee, (2) Blue Fish, (3) The Person I Love, (4) Hello Miss, and (5) Witch Amusement.

Do you agree with that particular list? Which were YOUR favorite shows of the year? I’m planning to do a mondo recap of my own thoughts on the past year, but first I wanna hear your opinions. I’ll leave all the polls open for the next month, then tally every thing by year’s end. Sound good?

Did I leave out your favorite? Leave me a scathing comment below!
