Chun Jung Myung’s twisted fairy tale

Baby-faced actor Chun Jung Myung’s last project before beginning his military service early next year will be the soon-to-be-released film Hansel and Gretel, which opens on December 27.

The film is described as starting with the jumping-off point of “What if Hansel and Gretel hadn’t returned home, and had to live on in the forest on their own?” in a macabre fairy tale.

His character, “Eun Su,” finds himself lost in a forest after an accident and comes upon three children living in a house deep in the woods. Although he tries to escape the labyrinthine forest, understanding and warm-hearted Eun Su worries about leaving the children behind.

He’s spent the last three months filming the movie and even sustained a finger injury, acting without the hesitance one might expect from someone about to enter military service. It’s his first time working with children actors, with whom he grew close while filming. Even now, he exchanges text messages regularly with his younger co-stars, and he had strong words of praise for them: “They’re not just child actors, they’re my colleagues. Even working late into the night, the kids didn’t give up and kept going through the end, doing their best even while rubbing their eyes sleepily. I learned a lot from them.”

I’m pretty easily freaked out by horror or suspense films, but I have to admit it sounds (and looks) pretty interesting, if kind of creepy…

Mixed-up Investigative Agency: Case 14

Seriously, just when I think there isn’t room for any more twists, Mixed-up Investigative Agency throws another one in. I’ve never seen such a tightly plotted series before, not even Veronica Mars. Here, it seems like not only are many clues peppered throughout all the episodes from the beginning, not one clue is wasted.

SONG OF THE DAY

Kite - “Insomnia for the Cake.” Kite is a modern-rock band that I haven’t quite made up my mind about yet. Their first album is half meh average rock, but there are a few tracks I quite like. This is one of them, for its interesting melody and laid-back rhythm. [ zShare download ]

Taiwan readies for the Coffee Prince craze

Check out that new hair! I admit I’m partial to the longer, Han Gyul-ian look on Gong Yoo (like this, for instance), but the new look’s kinda sharp and spiffy.

Anyway, Gong Yoo recently gave an interview (on the 27th) to eight major Taiwanese media outlets regarding the series Coffee Prince. Although the series hasn’t aired in Taiwan yet (it will begin its run on the Video Land channel on January 3 next year), Gong Yoo’s already won lots of fans over with his image as a “romantic prince.”

(I just wanted an excuse to post the pics. You don’t mind, do you? :) )

The battle to claim Iljimae

Actors Lee Seung Gi, Lee Junki

Iljimae is one of those folk-legend heroes, a real-life Robin Hood kinda guy dating back to the Chosun era who’s an ever-popular source of dramatic material.

Jang Dong Gun played him in one film version in 1993, and Choi Su Jong played him in a modernized version in 1990. Even Super Junior star Choi Si Won gave him a cheeky nod in the recent fusion sageuk parody The Story of Hyang Dan (the brief reference comes at the end of the second episode). A brief internet search also brings up the 1976 film version Righteous Fighter Il Ji Mae, a 1978 Flying Il Ji Mae, a 1961 title The Chivalrous Robber Il Ji Mae, and several animated versions to boot.

So when it became known that both MBC and SBS were preparing drama series based on the folk legend, both starring young rising stars, both to broadcast in early 2008, well, it’s no wonder the comparisons are flying and speculation rampant over which version will, to borrow a figure of speech, reign supreme. Not to mention that both Iljimae series will have to battle it out with yet another historical figure based on another Robin Hood-y popular hero, Hong Gil Dong.

SONG OF THE DAY

Pia - “The Oracle.” To be honest, I don’t really like Pia — their brand of loud, energetic rock music is often too loud and discordant for me to enjoy, and reminds me of a lot of American rock bands I don’t particularly care for. But I do like this song. [ zShare download ]

So which version will it be? >>

Which super-cute actor would voluntarily do this to himself?

Um, wow.

Apparently this fresh-faced actor appeared at MKMF in female rocker getup — but he found himself disappointed because nobody recognized him, as he explained when appearing on Mnet’s Star Watch 24 to be aired on the 28th. Perhaps it was because he was in the opening act and not many people saw him, but in any case, he felt a letdown when he figured out that no one had realized who he was.

Personally, I say thank heaven for small wonders, but this guy felt differently. Maybe the audience was too busy trying to figure out why the cracked-out rocker tranny was onstage to even consider it could be him, in wild contrast to his normal look…

SONG OF THE DAY

Tei - “Queen.” Fans of Delightful Girl Chun Hyang will recognize this song; the original version served as the major theme song for Uhm Tae Woong’s smooth Director Byun character. [ zShare download ]
