Song Hye Gyo’s Hollywood debut

Hallyu stars are increasingly trying to capitalize on their fame by traversing the cultural divide and attempting the Hollywood crossover. The latest to announce her intent to make the leap is one of Korea’s loveliest (and most famous) natural beauties, Song Hye Gyo.

It’s just been announced that she will be soon heading to New York to shoot the indie flick Fetish (way to skirt that whole Asian commodification and fetishization issue, huh?), co-starring opposite German actor Arno Frisch (photo) of the film Funny Games.

Song Hye Gyo met the casting director at the recent Pusan Film Festival, who was struck with her beauty and appeal in the film Hwang Jini, and was offered the role. Her management company explained that although Song Hye Gyo has been offered other roles in Hollywood films in the past, none of the characters seemed right for her. However, they felt this project would allow her to show her talents properly and effectively. She’ll be leaving soon for New York to begin work on the film, which is described as dealing with occult matters.

Hm. Of all the Hallyu actors to attempt the leap, somehow I feel Song Hye Gyo is ill-equipped for the challenge… I don’t think she’s at all fluent in English, and I’ve never exactly been wowed by her acting talent, either. She is, like Kim Tae Hee, a very beautiful and likable star whose acting skills are the weakest point about her acting career. I dunno about this…

but didn't you see her in All-In when she was speaking great English as a card dealer?...ok, bad example.

There are plenty of good korean American...or Korean Canadian actors, the yellow fever director can use.

song hye kyo is gorgeous but really, she's not that great of an actress. so I doubt she'll be able to act very well with lines in a language she's not very fluent in. And...I don't know... I just find her rather dull. Because of that, even her beauty isn't as prominent to me as it once was. Also, What is the film about? lol Because I have an idea from the title...But I'm also hoping that the film is dark... so if it's of a man's fantasy of a sexy, submissive Asian woman... then I hope he's ridiculously obsessive or she's crazy...or something! haha Anyways, Jung Ryeo Won from MNKSS can speak English, so she could probably do a Hollywood flick...however, I don't know much about her acting range... but I find her more excitable/alive than shk....however, she's not really "womanly" yet. I could see SHK playing a young wife and mother, but I can't imagine the same with JRY. (btw, javabeans.. I never noticed that little preview area under the box we write in... very nice!)

"...whose acting skills are the weakest point about her acting career."
HHAHAHA And that isn't very good for an actor (though considering the talent some of the "actors" in the US, it might not stop her)

I agree. I really like her because...she's so likable! =P

But her acting has never wowed me so I don't carry much hope for this Hollywood debut. =/

yah it does sound dark

SEOUL -- Actress Song Hye-gyo is set to become the latest South Korean star to debut in the U.S. with a leading role in indie feature "Fetish."
New York-produced psychological thriller will co-star Austrian actor Arno Frisch ("Funny Games") and be directed by Korean helmer/cinematographer Sohn Soopum, an NYU grad whose 2002 short "Fish in the Sea is Not Thirsty" screened in the Directors' Fortnight section at Cannes. Story centers around a woman with psychic abilities.

U.S.-based casting director Susan Shopmaker first met Song at the recent Pusan International Film Festival, where thesp's "Hwang Jin Yi" was in the official selection. Song is best known for her TV work, including dramas "Autumn Fairy Tale" and "All-In".

Actress reportedly is leaving for New York today to take part in the month-long shoot.

Right #5, she is just so likeable! hehe She was so adorable in Full House. My hubby loved that drama more than me because he was so in love with her. And, he rarely will comment on a particular actress. I hope it goes well for her, tho I agree with the other comments that it will be tough if she isn't strong in English.

I actually think SHK is better than how most people think of her, in terms of acting skills. I saw some of her stuff, and she's not bad. The thing is she tends to try to be safe, probably to protect her image. Even I read that she decided to make 'My Girl and I' because she thought it was a safe project for a first movie. For me, that doesn't reflect a true actor. I'm glad however that now she seems to be a wee bit more daring in choosing roles, like Full House and Hwang Jin Yi, despite the fact that I thought the movie tanked. But Full House remains one of my favorite dramas to date.

It feels like Song Hye Gyo isn't like all "I WANT TO GET INTO HOLLYWOOD!" unlike most actors. She seems very relaxed about the idea

Song Hye Gyo and Kim Tae Hee are a couple stars who are most openly accepted as being natural beauties. That is to say, you'll always have your doubters, but their "natural beauty" status is, if not undisputed, then much-less-disputed than others. It's not too hard to believe with SHG since her first professional model pics were when she was 13 or 14 and there are lots of early pics of her floating around.

Hm...I don't know about this either. She's pretty, and I'm glad that she is a "natural beauty" and will represent Korea and its stars in the correct way. But acting wise, I'm not sure if she'll make hollywood turn its attention towards Korea.

I've never been wowed by her acting abilities, and what about her english?!

I always think she's overrated in term of her acting. No question about her beauty. But ppl seems to focus too much on her look.
Ha.
Speaking fluently english is not sth that can be formed overnight no matter how hard you try, this thing takes time so wish her best luck. And yeah, ditto with Kim Tae Hee. I always put them together. haha

uh...never really believed that thing about her being a "natural beauty"...don't know why...jaded, i guess. anyways, she's def not the one to represent asia's actresses but good luck to her. i thought everyone and their cousins spoke english in korea, what with gazillion hwa gwons and all. why aren't these actors fluent in english by now??

I'm not all to confident about the idea that SHK going Hollywood... but let's see. One redeeming point I guess is that she chose a low-key, independent film first.

Isn't Arno Fisch Austrian? ^_^

I LOVE Song Hae Gyo!!!
Her acting is alright, but her English is well, I've never heard her speak English in any of her drama/movies that I've watched.
So yeah,,, When is she going to NY? My parents are inviting me to go to NY before Christmas, but I don't want to go... I've been to NY too many times. lmao
But if SHG is going to be there, I'm sooooooooooooo going!
Thanks a lot for the info!

I agree with you there. I have never seen her in a role (yes, even in the movie "Hwang Jin Yi") in which she impressed me with her acting. She's pretty, but not drop dead gorgeous, so while she may be "safe" in an indie flick, will it ever lift her to superstardom? Somehow I'm not holding my breath. Now I'm not saying that a person has to be gorgeous to make it in Hollywood. But when Hollywood does NOT seem to be color blind, being gorgeous helps. Jeon Ji Hyun, whom I've never really considered a great actress either, is very beautiful and just the kind of "Asian" actress that western directors love to cast (Lucy Liu, Zi Yi Zhang, etc.) and while the latter is a pretty darn good actress, I'll continue to reserve my judgement on Ms. Jeon. Now, who I'd REALLY love to see in a Western flick is Jeon Do Hyun (recent best actress winner at Cannes). Such acting prowess! I'd see her in anything! And Jang Dong Gun...yum...ahem...sorry about that. ^^;; Just a slip of the tongue, um, keys...yeah, that's it. Whew...okay, sorry to digress. Anyway, it'll remain to be seen if she manages to impress anyone else.

Like soonjap, im have not been impressed with SHK's acting prowess.
Im not a fan of Autumn Fairy Tale,
All in was ok...
Full house, she was able to do the cutesy role
Hwang Jin Yi was ok also.. (i liked HJW better)
I agree she and KTH are really pretty..
Though the natural remains to be a mystery to me ( i feel she changed a lot after AFT, looks wise)
Yeah.. many people like her..
Ill just wait and see..
Her co-star isnt too good on the eyes though...

^ yeah, after seeing HJW play Hwang Jin Yi, I really couldn't imagine SHK being able to play that type of role so I chose not to watch her movie. But I did watch My Girl and I... and I was really disappointed.

I agree with you. She's beautiful but her acting is mediocre, especially when you compare her to others in Hollywood, and in the Asian market for that matter. I like her a lot in the dramas that she had been in, probably mostly because her character was cute and she had strong male lead partner. But her facial expression is always the same, except during the sad scenes, then her crying scenes are the same. But I am still giving her the benefits of the doubt because she seems sweet and down to earth, so we'll see. Same for me with Zhang Ziyi, never understood what the commotion is all about.

I wonder am I the only one who really like her both as a star and an actress? I think she did a great job in AiMH and All In. Indeed at times her face seem as if constipated, a bit too harsh, but I never mind that. I didn't think there was anything wrong with her acting, actually I did for Hotelier [I didn't like her too much there]. Sometimes a bit stiff but after HJN I thought it was good even though the plot was a bit boring.

I don't know about overseas. I mean I'm never really fond of Hollywood anyway. There are some really untalented actresses here in the US and still they are drop dead famous.

Well, if she can really match up for it she can try. I mean I dislike the idea of hearing nonfluent English but if it's her, I might, just might, be able to tolerate it. ^^

I think the girl in MNIKSS is very good in English. Lol, she spoke fluently with DH throughout the whole series. ^^ I don't like her too much though, lol...

If 90 percent of the movie includes crying scenes because she's about to be sacrificed to the occult, I think that she might do well. If Song Hye Gyo can do anything well, it's cry. Other than that, I'm not terribly impressed...

Yeah Kim Tae Hee and Song Hye Gyo is definitely natural. I dont' know about Kim Tae Hee but I think Song Hye Gyo's acting is underrated. Song Hye Gyo did a great job in Hwang Jin Yi. It wasnt her acting that was bad it was the movie itself.

SHG is a great actor, everybody agrees that she has an appeal that itself is a gift. As for her English skill, it really tiring to keeping reading about the same thing again and again.

For God Sake we are asian and its very unfair to expect an american , brit or an aussie accent, what ever.........
