Open Thread #10

One holiday down, one more to go. Anyone have big New Year’s Eve plans? I’ll have limited internet access over the weekend (but I’ll still be posting — the rest of Year in Review series will be up in the next couple of posts!).

Anyone getting wasted as New Year’s Eve tradition dictates? (Are you all too young to drink?) Me, I like a nice cold vodka gimlet, a dirty martini, or a glass of cabernet. Although wine doesn’t really seem very New Years-y. I had a bloody Mary for the first time this week and it was surprisingly good.

What’s your poison?

SONG OF THE DAY

Hellogoodbye – “Oh It Is Love.” I was tempted to post Death Cab’s “The New Year,” but (1) that’s just so literal, and (2) it’s kind of a downer for such a supposedly festive holiday, isn’t it?

Happy New year!!! Vodka has always been my choice of poison but a nice bubbly wine is welcome. Of course, a glass of champagne is a must for the midnight toasting!

I'm too young to drink by one year. But next New Years I wouldn't mind having a glass of wine. Who cares if it's not very New Years-y lol.

For myself, I enjoy a whisky on the rocks or a poire eau de vie. However, for New Year's? My friends and I like to pop open a bottle of champagne each one minute before midnight. Much sturdier to clink bottles than glasses.

Happy New Years!!! Probably won't be going out, but if I did, I would probably order a grasshopper (my favorite), but I am also partial to white russians and black russians, coffee and baileys, rye and ginger or just a good ole' fashioned rum & coke :) But my New Years will be staying in and watching movies with my family and pigging out lol :)

I love a good lychee martini, champers, good whiskey on the rock & some really good red wine for New Years - yes all of that ... LOL. However, as normal, this New Year's Eve I will be performing and that means no drinking till after. By the time I get back to the hotel & everyone can gather after freshening up, it would be the wee hours. But never mind, we've planned a cheese, fruit, wine & choccie fondue do in my room for those who are not going out to party! And more dancing ... as if we'd not done enough! LOL.

Hope everyone here will have a safe & meaningful & fun New Year's Eve & Day. This year would not have been as fun without you, Sarah. Thanks for giving me hours of viewing & reading fun & I look forward to more in the new year!

It so funny after you cross the border from Canada to US you're not allowed to buy booze! lol.

Alcohol is totally overrated! I prefer some sparkling cider or a coke instead.
Celebrating new years with some fireworks and warm 70 degree weather! Hopefully it won't be too smoky out this year.

I see we don't have the Southern US represented here. Down south (Texas), we like our margaritas and our mojitos. Mojito is southern limenade with crushed mint and rum (if you haven't had one, you're sooo missing out).
Sometimes I fancy myself an uptown girl, so I like my occasional appletinis too.
I don't like the taste of cheap champagne, so I usually ring in the New Year with Asti Spumante Sparkling wine ($100 compared $10...the choice is simple.)
Can't seem to hold the liquor anymore... I'm out with just one glass these days.
So all you young'uns out there, have one for me.
Have a safe and happy time, we'll see ya'll next year.

I don't really drink much but I like some dessert wine once in a while. I got to work on New Year Eve till 9pm and off to church for a ThanksGiving Night Service. Most of my New Year Eves, I spend in church with my husband and friends. After the countdown, we will head for the Mamak store for supper till 2am.
BLESSES NEW YEAR JAVABEANS and thank you for your reviews and report throughout 2007. May you 2008 be filled with greater endeavour. Bless you.

But Death Cab's The New Year is just oh so good though! My friends and I were singing it as 2007 begun. We were a little hyper that night though...

Yeah, cheap champagne just isn't worth it. Go for the good stuff! I'll be visiting family this year, so probably nothing exciting planned. Last year, we just went to bed early. I guess I'm just an old fuddy-duddy, well not THAT old. Have a happy & safe New Year's everyone!

@katwoman, as the self-appointed (is there any better way in a democratic country like ours?) rep for the Western US states, i'd like to say that many of us also like our champagne here in SoCal. Personally, a glass or two of Vueve Clicquot usually does it for me. Anymore, I become uncontrollably happy. I prefer to be able to have some sort of self-control among relatives and family ya know.

@merriwhether: Death Cab rulez.

This New Year is ski then champagne for me. Preferably not in the reversed order since i'd like to be back here to read javabeans' post on Hong Gil Dong next week. Have a wonderful welcoming of the New Year everyone. Peace!

This blog's greatness shines in these random threads.

Prosecco creates (almost) the same buzz as bubbly, but minus the hangover.
Otherwise, sake or a nice single malt on the rocks whiles away the time to midnight.
Coming from a country with strict drunk driving laws, enjoy the night, but if you drive, check with a breathalyser first!

Happy 2008 everyone!
