What certain members can’t do, the other members make up for it to have a sort of overall well-rounded effect. I’ll give an example, Big Bang (which I agree should not be in this list and not only for bias purposes), the strong vocalists are Tae Yang and Dae Sung. Tae Yang can hit higher notes and is the best dancer of the group. Dae Sung has range and is good on variety shows. The rappers of the group are TOP and G-Dragon. TOP acts as well and I’m going to go out and say he’s probably the most recognized actor of the group. G-Dragon is known for his composing skills and with hit songs, whether you like them or not, the general public does. And now we get to Seung Ri, back-up vocal. Seung Ri might be the weakest vocal but he’s probably the best on variety shows especially since the other members (minus Dae Sung) make few appearances. We all know that variety show personalities can cause you to like a group or to hate them. So all in all, each member have their clear weaknesses but also their strong points. It makes them a solid group and I think this is paralleled by other groups as well. However, when a group is relying on one or two members for actual talent (vocal, rap, you could argue dancing but this is an idol group not a dance troupe) and the others are just their for “visual” and can’t even carry a note to save their lives, then we have a problem. Although it’s fair for some members to be lacking, the group on a whole shouldn’t be lacking.

I will say that I think the groups have definitely gotten better (live) since then. Heh, reminds me of when Nine Muses debuted and they received so much flack for their bad debut performance. They did however come back and kill all doubts with “Figaro” though. Goes to show with proper effort and time, improvement can be made.

Although this is an old post, I have to say i do agree that there are some really bad/mediocre singers in some idol groups or most, however just because some of the members are bad at singing it doesn’t mean people should generalize that the group is bad at singing, for instance I believe Wondergirl’s Sohee is bad at singing especially live, but Sunye and Ye-eun deserve credit, they’re actually good at singing and Sunye has been a trainee for a long time. As for Yoobin, i think i’m er and not really a singer and her rapping skills are ok. Rappers don’t always have a great singing voice although there are some people who do both beautifully (ie (T)asha). I think that because of those few members who actually do sing well in a group, Koreans do excuse the bad singing of the other members.

This post is quite old but I’ve only started recently listening to kpop and one of my friends is crazy about Eun Ji Won. He’s not a pop singer anymore but when he was, were his performances horrible as well? Have they improved over time? If that’s true then maybe thats the same for some of these people like Big Bang?

haha. i like suju. and i believe that KRY are really great singers… if not good singers, but there are the other members who are really good at it. so it’s a matter of working as a group and they are really good at it. each person is doing their best to contribute to help the group.

i also like bigbang and just like suju, each member has their own skill and they are good at their own forte. and i remember reading somewhere up there that Seungri can’t sing… well, he wouldn’t be in the music industry if he can’t sing wouldn’t he?

thankfully 2ne1 debuted 2 years after this post had been realeased, otherwised i think dara would’ve been bashed. but i like her.. though i believe others would share my belief that among the 4 she is the weakest when it comes to singing.

but hell yeah, 2ne1 rocks my socks.

This is an old article, and I’ve tried to keep myself out of all these heated discussions, but I would like to just point out that while Super Junior might ‘fail’ at live music shows before, they are definitely better now. KyuHyun and Yesung both have beautiful voices; both singing for the OSTs of Baking King and Cinderella’s Sister respectively. Siwon… Is not someone I’d pay to hear sing, but I wouldn’t mind watching him act. Heechul, Eunhyuk and Leeteuk shines as MCs. Super Junior have proven time and time again that they are more than just a bunch of pretty faces lumped together in a crazy numbered group. They are resilient, strong human beings who have grown over the years since their debut. They may not be able to compete with other groups like Big Bang and Wonder Girls, but they are in a league of their own.

(P/S: They won a Mashable Award earlier on in Jan 2011 and have a strong fanbase internationally. How many ASIAN artists can boast that?)

As for the Kpop artists not being able to hold a tune to save their lives, trying searching for the MR-removed versions of their performances. These people… You have to give it to them whether they are lip-synching or not; they’re doing their best.

Just realized this was in ’07- wasnt even a kpop fan back then! Yes ‘Omarion’ had an identity crisis for a while there but now hes pretty comfortable with his mohawk and doing his own thing… internationally too dare i say!

I have only a few things to say.
I’m very choosy when it comes to music.
I only choose a number of artists and I don’t usually go with the trend.
But I love DBSK and Big Bang.
Why?
Because they are the perfect contradictions of this article.
Yeah. They lip-sync sometimes. But they’ve proven their worth.
I’ve seen their old vids. And I admit, they messed up and was awful. They’ve improved so much.
I’m simply sad that the bands/groups these days rely on auto-tune and lip-sync.
Well, I’m crossing my fingers. And hope that these groups can prove themselves worthy of the fame.
I’ll wait, dearies.
But in the meantime, it’ll be DBSK and Big Bang. )
