I had similar thoughts to you until i started watching High Kick (I was late to the series) and then I saw why he was so overwhelmingly popular. It's partly his character on the show, since he got the best storylines as a misunderstood, silently broody rebel guy, and partly his own charm. I think it also explains why he's so popular in Korea, but not really outside of it, since a lot of drama and kpop fans don't have any way of being exposed to him with High Kick being (1) a daily sitcom with 150+ episodes, and (2) un-subtitled.
