Hong Gil Dong: Episode 10

The cliffhangers at the ends of odd-numbered episodes never bother me, because I can wait a day to find out what happens next. The ones at the end of EVEN-numbered episodes, however! They are another beast altogether. And I do mean beast.

Hong Gil Dong: Episode 9

Episode 9 kicks off what seems to be phase two of the drama. The previous political intrigues and conflicts are still here, of course, but we introduce a few more elements and move forward into the next stage of the hero-making lore.

Oh, and Gil Dong gets a haircut. He’s still rocking the perm, though. Must mean his transformation is only half complete.

Hong Gil Dong finds fans in Japan

I could kinda guess Hong Gil Dong had carved out its niche of Japanese fans just from the increased site referrals here from Japanese sites and websurfers, but the following puts it into plain terms:

Positive reaction to Hong Gil Dong in Japan: “A funky drama that exceeds expectations”

The KBS2 drama Hong Gil Dong, now heating up airwaves domestically, is also attracting lots of interest in Japan.

One Japanese magazine said in an article about the drama, explaining in detail about the lead character, “Hong Gil Dong exceeds expectations as the story of a funky kind of hero.”

Japanese press has taken particular note of the lead actors Kang Ji Hwan, Sung Yuri, and Jang Geun Seok, who’ve thrown themselves into their acting. The series is distinctly separate in its story and visual style from its sageuk predecessors.

One rep from the drama’s production company, Olive Nine, explained international reaction to Hong Gil Dong, saying, “Interest from overseas media is high with regard to this Korean-style hero, who’s neither overly serious nor lighthearted. Even at the production company’s press conference, there were approximately thirty to forty foreign reporters from countries like Japan, China, and Taiwan in attendance.”

The fusion comedy sageuk drama Hong Gil Dong stars Kang Ji Hwan, Sung Yuri, and Jang Geun Seok and has garnered lots of love from audiences, setting itself apart from previous historical dramas with its particular style of costuming, characters’ way of speech, and story.

News bites: January 29, 2008

  • SES lead singer Bada gave a performance as lead character Esmerelda in the musical Notre Dame de Paris on the 26th to positive reviews, particularly in the dance segments. Guess all that pop-star training came in handy.
  • Ha Jiwon takes on a role as a pianist in the film co-starring Cha Tae Hyun (My Sassy Girl) and Park Hee Soon (badass Baek Min-chul in Mixed-up Investigative Agency), which is titled Fool. The movie’s written by the screenwriter of The Host 2, also an internet manhwa writer of the original work the film is based upon, and is a “warm, genuine” story about a simple-minded neighborhood character, no doubt the titular “fool.” I’m guessing Cha Tae Hyun’s the dummy? (Will he ever play someone who isn’t?)
  • Actress Lee Bo Young (who’s doing press for her latest film, Once Upon a Time) admits that she’d attempted to be a news announcer, and even took the MBC announcers’ test in 2002, which she failed. Well, at least she’s pretty.
  • Speaking of pretty, actress and former pop singer Chae Jung Ahn has signed on as the exclusive brand model for women’s fashion line ab.plus by ab.f.z (yeah, try pronouncing that) for the next year. A rep for ab.plus explained contracting Chae for her “refined” and “mature” image, a side we definitely saw in Coffee Prince.
  • Ten years after her debut, singer Lena Park, also known by her Korean name Park Jung Hyun, gives a five-day series of concerts starting March 26, wrapping up her promo activities for her sixth album, “Come to Where I Am.”

Ivy resurfaces

Where’s pop singer Ivy’s “Leave Britney alone” guy when she needs one?

She’s had a pretty tough year, what with the allegedly violent and angry ex-boyfriend blackmailing her regarding an alleged sex tape that never materialized, and the subsequent airing out of the relationship’s dirty laundry, including accusations of cheating with fellow pop singer Wheesung. And the netizens have torn her apart over the smear on her reputation. It doesn’t matter that her ex was found guilty and sentenced to hard time for his blackmailing; a woman is accused of sexual promiscuity and the “slut” tag gets thrown far and wide.

In the wake of all this ugliness, Ivy resurfaced online on the 24th on her own fan cafe, explaining her long absence due to being sick and tired of the internet, sick of her name being in the news. She wrote to her fans, “I’m doing fine. I’m praying to erase all the bad memories in my mind. Since I’ve only been at home, I’ve gained some weight, and my health has gotten a little worse. Sooner or later, I’ll have a medical checkup done.” She added, “[My fans] were probably worried about me… This year, I hope for lots of happy things.”

Well, things can only improve, right?
