New Heart wins ratings, Hong Gil Dong wins repeats

Hong Gil Dong is performing decently well in the ratings — it’s not soaring, but holding steady in its initial 15% range against the hit medical drama New Heart, which has risen with its latest episode to break the 30% mark. (Their third rival barely compares; Bulhandang [Con Man] is struggling, having sunk to nearly half its initial viewership of 9.8% to 5.5%. In fact, most press refers to the Wednesday-Thursday ratings battle as a two-way competition, leaving Bulhandang out of the equation.)

15% ratings doesn’t make the series a runaway hit, but it’s respectable, given that the numbers have stayed relatively constant throughout its run. New Heart (MBC) has the added benefit of having premiered a few weeks prior to the other two series; Hong Gil Dong (KBS2) and Bulhandang (SBS) began their runs on the same day.

Newsen reports that Hong Gil Dong is further winning audiences through its repeat broadcasts; the latest ratings numbers released by TNS Media Korea show Hong Gil Dong recording as high as 7.6% for its latest (the 14th) episode rerun. Naturally, the other series are also airing repeats, but TNS points out that Bulhandang trails there also, by a solid 2% margin.

I'm really glad that Hong Gil Dong is doing well in the ratings, because they definitely have been pretty consistent (except the week of Chinese New Years). I think one reason that New Heart may be doing so well is because it's able to capture a much broader range of audiences. I hear that lots of people watch New Heart when it airs and then catch the HGD re-run the next day. But because viewership ratings is still, nonetheless, a measurement of popularity, I wish that Hong Gil Dong could do better. =/ I'm thinking about Kang Ji Hwan's latest entry on his website, so I wish that HGD would be able to garner high ratings, so it could warm their hearts and let them rest assured as they work so hard in the freezing weather. Ahh.. hopefully when New Heart finishes airing then.

I'm so glad New Heart is doing well as this is one of my current favourites to watch. Since I haven't watched HGD yet with english subs, I can't really compare. Your recaps are the only thing I've been following so far. Like the tv viewers, I'll check it out afterwards.

I don't understand why Robbers (or Bulhandang, whatever you prefer to call it) is getting such low ratings. I caught the first episode of it and I must say, it is highly entertaining. Plus, it's got a great cast.

I'm glad that Hong Gil Dong is gaining some recognition - I just wish more people would notice how amazing the series really is. It probably has captivated a large fan base, but at the same time many of those fans are busy watching New Heart and just turning into re-runs the next day.

im surprised. i didnt know medical dramas (well if not all at least New Heart) was so popular in Korea. im curious as to what exactly it is about the drama that draws such a large percentage of viewers.
but im happy hong gil dong is doing quite well, ratings are pretty similar to last year's TODAW..and i love both.

What is New Heart about? Is that a Korean Grey's Anatomy or House? The scrubs sure looks like it.

Rong, 7.6% is on the high side for reruns. I usually see those in the 3%-5% range. Consider this -- Hong Gil Dong repeats are bringing in higher ratings than Bulhandang/Robbers first-run episodes.

New Hearts is good. first of all, since i am a med student, i really like the accuracy of the drama. I love the drama and inner struggles of the interns. In fact, sometimes, I get motivated by the drama.
Hence, I can understand how it can garner such high rating. ^^

Eeek I wouldn't want any of the New Heart characters operating on me! They all look ill and in need of better health care, especially the chick who looks like a ZOMBIE.
GilDong ROCKS!

the ratings are pretty much what i expected, but it would have been nice if all 3 were equally popular. i've been catching a bit of these dramas and gotta say that they all have strong assets. medical dramas are usually assured success in korea because many of the older viewers prefer to explore the highly privileged world of medicine over the more comical "cartoony" dramas, but i would say new heart is not quite as well written as HGD nor Bulhandang since the writer(s) resort to flashy/over-the-top subplots while feigning realism/depth--but I love watching it all the same. Bulhandang is really well constructed with great character development but is less showy than the other two dramas--it's like when i'm watching it, i'm thinking, what a unique, quality drama, but it has a low addictive factor. Although I love the script and strange characters, I'm not quite in love with the actors like with HGD. HGD is great (not surprisingly), though a little too exaggerated and simplistic for the more serious viewers, but they aren't the target audience anyway. It manages to get the adrenaline pumping with each episode despite my desensitized, kdrama-overloaded brain.

I am glade that New Heart is doing so great and HGD too. I like both too but i prefer New Heart, it is just that it is in deed soo funny. HGD is funny too but sometime it is toooo funny (i mean it is overacting until the point where it isn't funny anymore). But still both are great dramas.
As to Robbers aks. Con Man hmm it started good but now i think it isn't interesting anymore. I only continue to watch it because of the main actor, because i really like him. Hope it will be better.

New Heart and Hong Gil Dong yeahh fighting!!! hehe

I have only watched New Heart and still halfway finishing it. I think it's very good. Acting wise I feel comfortable enough. comic relief seemed natural. and so thus the love angle (am starting to like the 'fool' neophyte surgeon w/low class education- wasn't he in ALL IN? ). I have watched the taiwanese 'white tower' that was supposedly based on a jap novel and it was sooo dramatic i didn't much enjoy it. that drama focused more on the drama not much on what doctors do plus it was sooooo long. I agree with - potensvita -New heart at least gave me much to enjoy in every episodes so far. how they were able to capture the hospital set up so much so that it tacles a lot of angle never leaving any hidden - politics, extra marital affairs, beaurocracy, it was presented in a lighter mode that you wouldn't hate a bit of a reminder of what's really going on within the walls of a city /major hospital.

I still have to watch HGD... but i begged off on period/epic plots for the mean time after jewel in the palace. I am catching the jumong rerun on local philippine tv but misses a lot on few episodes due my current work load. Am not too sure yet who will run this on local tv or if it already is running. i haven't checked if utube has it so... am not sure i'd like it w/o the dubbing or the subs... fan subs are great! though dubbing makes it comfortable to watch... most often it misses out on the actual comical content w/c the original drama has when dubbed.
