While a devoted Gong Hi Dong fan (watching in early 2012) I agree that the drama is too unwieldy with the opium and sword episodes. These side plots elongate the drama with not much interest although an argument can be brought forth about the sword episode. When the story veers from Gil Dong, Enok, and Chang Whi something is missing. These three characters have enough going with their absent parents to fill the narrative gaps needed. That said, I’ll finish watching in hopes that the last three episodes are snappier and not so boring as the opium episode. Kang Ji Hwan rocks as does the mad king. They are complex characters whose motivations for what they do make fascinating watching. Gong Hil Dong is truly a Shakespearean drama with a lust for power and misplaced or difficult-to-achieve love.

Poor Prince, his world is about to be shattered! There is no way he isn’t going to find out about the fake. I don’t think that it is a fake is what will really upset him though, I’m thinking his mom setting all of this chaos in motion is going to lead to some emotional turmoil–as we see with Lady Noh.

I agree that it is starting to feel a little draggy, but I haven’t hit the fastforward button the way I did in Goong. (Just checking my twitter account when some people are on screen…)

Thanks for enhancing my enjoyment of this series with your reviews.

Isn’t a bummer that the Chang We actor isn’t better. I mean, I adore the boy’s hair and clothes and voice. But oh dear I really struggle to figure out just what he’s supposed to be thinking or feeling. (“resolute” seems to be the intended message most of the time. I think.) Now that HGD has clearly developed into The Righteous and Virtuous One, I’m finding CW’s character the more interesting. Will he be corrupted by the power he is seizing? When one rebuilds a nation, what does one do with the existing (corrupt but necessary) establishment? Will his self-belief hold up? Will his to-date considerate affection for Enok degenerate into drama-land mindless possessiveness? It’s probably a testament to the careful script-writing that I care at all, in the face of such indifferent acting.

UGHHHH! i want CW and Enok to be together! =( its always a lost cause when i root for the “other” guy. GD is actually not that horrible. i just wonder how they will finish the series as her being queen…

i knew there was a significance to Minister Hong’s support of Kwang Whe. The king being of low status at birth, his dream of changing the social system and Minister Hong’s own situation about Gil Dong’s birthright all fit.

Really excited about the developments and futher revelations in the last 3 episodes!!!!! It’s been a while since i became this interested in a korean series. It was quite difficult to find another one after Coffee Prince.
