Eric will be enlisting for his mandatory military service by September of this year, but first he’ll eke out one more project — a sageuk drama.
According to his management, Eric felt a strong pull to the script — a “comedic heroic sageuk” already drawing cursory comparisons to Hong Gil Dong — and is currently in preparations for the part. The series, KBS2’s Monday-Tuesday drama Choi Kang Chil Woo (a pun on the character’s name also meaning “strongest Chil Woo” or “Chil Woo the best”), will be directed by PD Park Man Young (Vineyard Man) and premieres on June 9. The story places him in Joseon times as the titular Kang Chil Woo, an ordinary and lower-tier government official by day, and secret kickass assassin by night.
I’ve always thought Eric looked completely modern, so I’m curious to see how well he dons traditional garb and acts in a historical drama. Then again, the plot and description sounds like it’s not going to be sticking too closely to conventional sageuk structure, so maybe his modern looks will fit right in.
His last acting role was in last year’s Que Sera Sera, after which he took a break from acting and resumed activities with Shinhwa. Speaking of whom, Shinhwa gives their tenth-anniversary concert(s) in Seoul on the 29th and 30th.

As suspected, Hong Gil Dong will follow its final episode on Wednesday (26th) with a special episode to broadcast on Thursday (27th).
The special will be hosted by comedian Jung Hyung Don and announcers Choi Song Hyun and Jeon Hyun Mu, wearing the costumes worn by the three series leads. They’ll talk to actors and share behind-the-scenes talk on the set of Hwal Bin Dang’s headquarters, and answer questions picked from those posted by viewers on the show’s message board. There’ll also be the typical special-episode fare, with replays of best scenes and a collection of NGs (outtakes). The episode has been rather quickly slapped together after an Olympic qualifying baseball game pre-empted the broadcast on the 13th (but in my opinion, these things always feel kind of repetitive anyway, so that’s no big loss).
Next week, Hong Gil Dong relinquishes its timeslot to the drama Three Dads, One Mom starring Eugene, Jo Hyun Jae (who turned down the role of Gil Dong, coincidentally — I think he would’ve been a good pick, although not to the level of Kang Ji Hwan), Jae Hee, and Shin Sung Rok.

Former model (and wrestler!) Lee Eon, currently appearing in MBC’s drama Who Are You?, has been selected as host of a cable fashion show, On Style channel’s Style Hot, alongside fashion model Ji Hyun Jung.
From its description, Style Hot will feature the newest clothing and beauty trends as the hosts scour various locales (ranging from the streets to formal events) looking for the latest styles. It’ll also feature interviews with relevant fashionista experts.
The show premieres on March 24 (3:30 pm) and covers spring makeup trends (Lip gloss! How to apply it!) and interviews with car designer Song Kyung Ah and figure skater Kim Yuna. It sounds as stimulating as an issue of Allure come to life. Stultifying, vapid, brain-deadening life.
Oh well, I’ll always have Coffee Prince. And now Who Are You? as well. There’s something that’s so… comforting about Lee Eon, despite his muscles and his size (did you know he’s 188cm tall?). Maybe it’s the idea that he could pick you up, whirl you around his head with one hand, and break various precious joints in your body — but he’d rather just be a big ol’ gentle teddy bear.

Yoon Eun Hye’s one of the most in-demand CF models working these days, and now she adds one more to the roster: she’s signed with cosmetic company Amore Pacific’s “premium Oriental-medicine shampoo” Ryeo [려/呂], which boasts restorative herbal effects from its special “patented formula” (geez, do I sound like a brainless ad shot in glossy colors and fuzzy backlighting or what?).
The shampoo CF brought in famed art director Jung Gu Ho (Hwang Jini), who’s credited with the set dressing, costuming, and the concept behind Yoon Eun Hye’s tradition-inspired look. Obviously, since her hair was cut short for last year’s Coffee Prince and hasn’t miraculously sprouted over a foot in length overnight, we can only presume that the commercial’s long-haired look has been generously enhanced by artificial means. Does nobody care given that the product being hawked is shampoo? Ah, right, I’m forgetting this is Korean beauty advertising — it doesn’t matter if it’s natural as long as it’s beautiful.
Funny, you’d think with such boasting of credentials, the promo picture released to the public would be better quality. Me, I prefer the candid, unstylized photo by a long shot (right).
The CF will be unveiled to the public on April 1.

Who Are You? continues to be more endearing than expected. It’s one of those dramas I didn’t think I’d really love — just something to watch casually for lack of something better — but I’m surprised at how much I enjoyed the latest episodes. I did try to go back and watch more of On Air, even though the first three episodes did nothing for me — and I can only say that On Air grates on my nerves on every level, so I’ve given it every shot and it’s just not for me.
Past experience has shown me that even when I take to a series immediately like Who Are You?, lots of dramas take a downturn after episodes 5 or 6. So I’m still treading cautiously; after next week, I’ll have a better handle on what kind of drama it’ll turn out to be.
