Wedding bells (almost, kinda) for Jung Jun Ho

It is with some trepidation that I read the articles for this post — not out of some kind of uber-fannish love for actor Jung Jun Ho (although he IS handsome), but because I am assiduously avoiding any news that is related to The Last Scandal of My Life for fear of being spoiled as to its finale, which aired yesterday.

(And you thought I was kidding about hating spoilers, right? I’m pretty hardcore — even watching previews at the end of an episode ruins the fun for me. I was halfway through Delightful Girl Chun Hyang before I realized I’d missed a whole bunch of the ending parodies because I’d been skipping the end-credit previews.)

But anyway.

Jung Jun Ho’s been in the news a bit since Last Scandal has been airing, and the current buzz centers around his love life. Reports started circulating on April 28 about his plans to marry an unidentified woman (”Ms. P”); later that evening, he spoke with reporters at a drama wrap gathering and confirmed the relationship with the 32-year-old woman (he’s 39). The couple met earlier this year; he recently proposed and he hopes to tie the knot before the end of 2008.

His drama co-stars expressed their delight over the news: Jung Woong In (who plays his older brother Dong Hwa) said, “When he talked on his cell phone, I’d heard a woman’s voice, and now it turns out we have this great news.” Byun Jung Soo (playing Lee Na Yoon) said jokingly, “I hope he gets married this year. He’d better hurry!”

The Last Scandal of My Life: Episode 7

What can I say except for what I’ve already said? Last Scandal of My Life is fresh, funny, and super-addicting. I know the series ended today, and I hope to be all caught up soon. But I’m not (too) impatient to get to the end — how can I be, when all the episodes in between are such great fun?

SONG OF THE DAY

“Jealousy,” the theme song from 1992 drama Jealousy (질투 / Jiltu). This might seem like a random song to post, but Jealousy was a hugely popular drama and one of Choi Jin Shil’s early roles, and is the basis for one fleeting — but pretty awesome — joke in this episode of Last Scandal. [ Download ]

Here’s the song as remade by Fin.K.L. a decade later. [ Download ]

News bites: April 26, 2008

  • Sung Yuri is set to appear in her first solo talk show appearance on SBS’s new The Star Show; the show concept is centered on deep conversation with “big stars.” Originally veteran actor Choi Min Soo was scheduled for the show’s second episode, but that was scrapped with his recent scandal for beating up a 70-year-old man. Episode airs May 5.
  • Chae Rim admits to having her eyes done on a recent episode of Happy Together. She was also asked, somewhat uncomfortably, “Why don’t you get married?” (uncomfortably because of her public divorce). She broke the awkward mood and explained, “When I see others living with their husbands, I don’t really feel envious.”
  • In the same episode, MC/funnyman Yoo Jae Seok revealed he’d gone to the same university as Chae Rim and Rivals co-star Lee Jong Hyuk, but he’d never graduated (he’d been working as a comedian and had to often leave to go to the broadcast station).
  • In middle school, Kim Rae Won was always ranked (academically) in third place — from the rear. (He continued, “I quit playing basketball, shocked to hear my grades wouldn’t be good enough to continue to high school, so I started studying harder.”) He’s currently filming manhwa-based drama Gourmet.
  • Epik High rapper Mithra Jin has a girlfriend (Tablo disclosed the fact when the group appeared on Love Letter on the 26th). Mithra said that although that’s true, they only have time to meet once every two or three weeks to confirm they’re still alive.
  • Go Soo was released from military duty on April 25, and he sure looks happy. Welcome back, dude.
  • …and goodbye to pop singer Eru, who took the stage to bid goodbye before beginning his military service next month (May 1), appearing on MBC’s Music Core on the 26th with new hit group Mighty Mouth. He performed, appropriately enough, the song “Last Concert.”

The Last Scandal of My Life: Episodes 5 & 6

First, WITH S2 will be subtitling this (as a side project, so please be patient!), so I hope you’ll give them your thanks — it’s a terrific show and well worth the attention.

Second, since I’m behind on the series, I’ll ask once more just as a reminder to PLEASE DON’T SPOIL the later episodes! Thanks.

This series is one of the most enjoyable I’ve seen recently, and one that I don’t have to qualify with footnotes (as in, “This takes seven and a half episodes of wasted time before it gets good” or “Be patient, it’ll get better”).

SONG OF THE DAY

Kim Min Jong - “그대와 영원히” (With You Forever), the song sung by Jae Bin in episode 6. This song, originally by Yoo Jae Ha and something of a classic love song, has been covered a lot, but I like this version by actor-singer Kim Min Jong (Hyena, Feelings) from his 1996 third album. There are versions by Leeds and Kim Bum Soo too, but I think the simplicity of the song works better without their excess vocal frills. [ Download ]
