Yay, a Jaurim post~! Yuna’s son is so adorable. ^^

My first song I heard from them was “NIghtmare.” I’ve always liked their sound. Always experimenting and such. Hm, I also read that their recent album was leaked before the actual release date.. I hope their promotions go well!

Ah, I watched If You Were Me yesterday, and all I am associating Korean dentists right now are tongue surgeries. x___x Hopefully he’s not doing any of those. Tongue surgeries are just absolutely cruel.

Jaurim is an institution of Korean alternative rock, and Kim Yuna is K-Rock’s once and future Queen. Kind of your prototypical college rock band that crossed over. Some of their more accessible/popular songs include “Hey Hey Hey”, “Magic Carpet Ride” and the “Ha Ha” song.

Their sound has changed a lot through the years. U to their 4th record (“4″), they had a flexible alternative rock record (not unlike an edgier The The), similar to how mid-90s American alt rock sounded. A little bit of Chili Peppers, a little bit of Pearl Jam, a little bit of Pixies, a little bit of ska. Whatevers. And Yuna is a singular, highly theatrical presence, like if Alanis Morissette meets PJ Harvey (or PJ without the Nick Cave influences.)

During “4″ and after, Yuna started bringing in trot music, rock en espanol stylisms, and electronica. Just all over the map. But, what makes Jaurim (like Roller Coaster) stand out from other Korean bands is that they don’t simply try on different clothes, they really do make it their own.

I’d recommend starting out with their covers album first — “Youth Admiration.” It’s more accessible, and it also shows you the different looks Jaurim gives you. Also, their straightforward cover of Bowie’s Starman will get ya misty eyed.

She and her bandmates have a sometimes contentious relationship (who doesn’t?) , and some Jaurim fans feel that their recent work has become essentially an extension of her solo work. I don’t know — it’s kinda weird watching her sometimes host that music show (Love Letter, isn’t it?) too, especially after her calling out K-pop. Rather like seeing PJ Harvey host American Idol . . .

That all said, thank God Jaurim is still around, and congratulations to Yuna!
