Sittin’ on top of the world

(First thought at seeing the photo: Why don’t I have a disco-ball swing?)

Chasing the success of The Chaser

Park Yong-ha returns to the big screen after six years away, following up his comeback in the recent drama success On Air with a film role. Prior to that, his last kdrama was 2002’s Loving You, while his last film was 2002’s Love Me Once Again (he had worked on his singing career in Japan in the intervening years).

Now he’s set to star in the film Bond [작전; translation mine -- the eventual English title may differ] opposite Kim Min-jung, which plans to start shooting in September and recently begun test shoots. The title refers to financial parlance, as the crime thriller revolves around a stock scam plot.

Although rumors in Chungmuro say the script is strong, production company Silk Road has kept relatively mum about the plot, casting, and other details. But given the success of Silk Road’s previous film, hit thriller The Chaser, focus has heightened on this project as well.

Park Yong-ha plays a man whose fearless trading on the stock market led him to complete ruin, who spends the next five years studying the stock charts. After becoming a day trader, he is scouted and unwittingly becomes embroiled in crime. Sounds like just the type of dark thriller to follow in The Chaser’s footsteps, but we’ll have to see if it can fill those (rather large) shoes.

Got plans for the holiday weekend? (That reminds me: Go buy the drinky.)

I guess the approach of Labor Day means the start of school for all you young’uns? To whom I say: NEENER NEENER. I am so glad to be out of school. Even if the “real world” is sometimes stupid and intimidating.

Happy holiday, folks! Drink up, but wisely. ;)

From Coffee Prince to On Air

Coffee Prince’s scene-stealing “Harim,” or actor Kim Dong-wook, is taking the stage for his musical debut in the lead role of frank and straightforward “Alex” in the production of On Air: Season 2.

On Air: Season 2 is described as a “cheerful romantic musical” that takes place at a radio station, centering around a younger DJ and a stiff older female PD (gawd, run that older-female trend/cliché into the ground, will ya?). Despite sharing its name with the popular SBS drama series, the two On Air musicals (Season 1 ran earlier this year) share only a tenuous link to the drama; this isn’t an adaptation or sequel, but rather a loose spin-off.

Kim Dong-wook’s character in the musical takes some of its cues from real life, it seems. Apparently Alex in Season 1 was a idol singer who faced lip-synching accusations. But now in Season 2, he’s called away to fulfill his military service, and finds himself coming back after his discharge to unexpected public attention. He dreams of making a grand comeback while working as a radio DJ.

The musical runs from October 7 through January 4 of next year.
