Sung Yuri does European retro chic

Sung Yuri goes seductive and mature for her new fall fashion spread. She looks lovely, as always, although I think she’s too thin to pull off truly sexy — she reminds me of a really pretty mannequin, portraying an outward image of sexy but without any inner sensuality. Actually, I think that’s the weakness of a lot of picture-perfect, wispy actresses these days. (Now, Kim Sun-ah, there’s sexy. And Kim Hye-soo, of course.)

She models these structured autumn clothes for apparel brand VIKI; the photo spread concept is described as being based on a “medieval European retro style.”

  1. Absolutely gorgeous, love the hair. I can hardly recognizes her lol.

  2. She’s pretty but I was never drawn to her.
I think because she always has this air of aloofness.

  3. She’s gorgeous though.
    Goodness, she’s so thin.

  4. I like the look on her! The background is interesting…definitely in a good way.
Sung Yuri has always been an almost- but -not-quite favorite actress for me. Not as a actress but as a celebrity (I like her look in general)
Kim Sunah in When it’s Night is not very sexy. only in that one scene when she’s forced to wear a dress.
    Kim Hyesoo is gorgeous. Yup.

  5. what a lovely cut on that leather jacket. she’s nice but yea, i can only think of hunger pangs looking at her figure. somehow sexy & sensuality are tied to joy of food, sex, affection, charismatic connexion between people. the stick-thin celebs who can project this and sell it as an aesthetics in zine spread, are maggie cheung & zhang ziyi for 2 that come to mind quickly. & both suggest it because of the life experience under their belts (pun intended?) just being gorgeous & striking poses can’t cut the mustard deeper…

  6. Her hair is pretty..

  7. I think she looks perfect! At least she doesn’t look anorexic like most models! Anyway, LOVE the fashion! Now, that’s the kind of clothes I’d like to wear and Sung Yuri looks absolutely GORGEOUS!!!!

  8. Ooohhh, Sung Yuri looks amazing! Love the whole look from the hairstyle to the fab shoes!

  9. wow o_o love the first picture

  10. Just stunning! Totally lovin’ the hair and makeup! Fav outfit has to be second thumbnail! I want it!!!!

  11. She looks AMAZING. 10 thumbs up! Disagree with your lack of sensuality comment. There are different types of sexy. The type of sexy that looks fun for a fling(think Scarlett Johannson) and the type of sexy you want to marry and stare at for the rest of your life aka Sung Yuri. Upgrade from the Aiden shoot for sure.

  12. I’d like to see a sexy Kim Sun Ah. Every time I look at her I think of Kim Sam Soon.

  13. Sexy Kim Suh-ah, coming right up:

  14. So sexy equals big t&a and plunging necklines? Shame on you java, you’re thinking too much like red blooded american boys.

  15. Ivuson, didja read what I wrote above?

It’s not about the clothes, it’s about how a woman carries herself.

  16. “I think she’s too thin to pull off truly sexy “. Translation: Needs big boobs and big booty to be deemed sexy.
“it’s about how a woman carries herself.” Translation: Acting like a lady=boring. Skanking it up Hyorishly = hot Hot HOT!

No offense, I generally agree with you, just not on Sung Yuri. But a blog would be blase if everyone agreed on everything so keep up the good work!

  17. Uh, you’re reading between the lines, only they’re the wrong lines.

“Too thin” = looks hungry and unhealthy. Not = must have boobs.

“It’s about how a woman carries herself” = with confidence. Not = like Hyori (whom I actually think is not that sexy when she’s putting on the skanky act, because it reads like desperation instead of confidence).

I don’t mind you disagreeing on Sung Yuri (hey, she’s popular for a reason), but just wanted to clarify since you seem to have misinterpreted.

  18. she’s beautiful lady, but i can’t say i like the makeup on her. it makes her look a little gothic.. not in a good way either but leaning more towards sickly dying person.

  19. Not to nitpick but…
From the Hong Gil Dong Special Review: “Sung Yuri seems rather self-aware and coy”
Usage of self aware in terms of an individual according to yourdictionary.com: “Each child is encouraged to develop into a confident, competent, caring and self-aware individual.”

““It’s about how a woman carries herself” = with confidence” which implies you do not find SY sexy because her demeanor lacks confidence which is in direct contradiction to your previous statement about her from the HGD Special. I may have misinterpreted your true intentions/opinions but it was not a baseless assumption. Your comments, purposely or not, implied a certain ideal or definition of what it takes to be sexy and no amount of backtracking or post explanations will alter that fact.

Caveat: I am obviously a SYR fan so if I am truly baseless in my misinterpretations I apologize. One does crazy things in defense of their loved ones. :)

  20. Good lord, you must insist on parsing and misinterpreting everything I say. So i won’t continue.

Think what you like. I will too.

  21. Sung Yuri looks fabulous in those outfits! This is one of the few times I actually like what I see on a celebrity model (especially in a magazine photoshoot!)
It’s dark but beautiful! I’d love to get my hands on all four outfits!

  22. holy OMGWTFBBQ you quit? Me too. Truce!

  23. I get what you mean, Java. The woman doesn’t have to be necessarily be curvacious, but she can’t be so fragile and cute, which is what I think Sung Yuri still comes off as. She needs confidence and boldness. You can still be classy and sexy!

Kim Sun-Ah is sexy. She has curves, and she shows it off with confidence and boldness (or perhaps she’s blessed with a bold and mature face, whereas Sung Yuri is beautiful in a more softer, cuter style). And quite frankly, I think she looks classy no matter what.

In Java’s defense, I think self-aware and coy merely means that she knows herself/her image and how to speak and present herself. It doesn’t necessarily mean boldness or confidence.

Sung Yuri looks incredibly beautiful, and I adore her clothes, but she is more smoky than sultry.

  24. The fangirls/boys always love lashing out at any hint of criticism. This wasn’t even criticism! The post said she was “lovely” (just not in-your-face sexy). Calm down fans!

  25. When I read you articles, I can tell who you like and don’t like. This blog is not as unbiased as it used to be……

  26. (psst, it was never unbaised.)
  27. Hmm, I get the feeling that a lot of celebs don’t really know what “sexy” is…

I wish I could better articulate my point, but, alas, I kind of suck at English right now.

On the other hand, I think that the clothes are cool, and that Sung Yuri looks really pretty.

  28. I’m with Java. I think a woman’s sexiness comes from within=self confident. It just so happens that Kim Sun Ah has alot to be self confident about. I would kill to have legs, hips, and boobs like that.

Sung Yuri just looks cute. And really, if you look at the picture and her pose, it’s too angular to be sexy. She would definitely benefit w/more meat on her bones.

  29. She is very pretty. I thought the first picture looks too perfect almost like a fake person - you know those mannequins?

I would love to have her kind of beauty but at the same time I feel it will scare people off because it’s too perfect. Hmmm, I think she does look too thin and it makes people like me feel bad because despite being “average” I’m being labeled as “fat” …well according to Asians…

Anyways, kudos to the way she put on the outfits. Very pretty.

  30. I gotta agree with popcorn. She does seem a bit too thin.
At least in HGD the clothes made her look about the same weight as we common people would be able to carry. And you know what? It is a bit discouraging that so many Asians tend to love the stick thin figure and think that is healthy because many westerners think otherwise. LOL, some Asians think that an average person should be around 100lbs-110lbs. Crazy. (LOL, forgive my rambling) ^_^

But she does look gorgeous. :)

  31. Java, no offense, but I think you’re unnecessarily taking a shot at Yuri by saying she can’t be sexy. It’s not that she can’t be sexy but this spread wasn’t meant for people to say “Wow! She’s so hot and sexy”. If you can’t see that, then you obviously missed the point of the spread.

  32. I think she’s a really good model for the clothing line! She looks beautiful and the clothes look beautiful on her! I really like the one with the purple blouse!

  33. She’s got the sultry look going and I really love the outfits!

  34. hi javabeans! thanks for this post..

    in my opinion,
SY is a pretty girly cutesy…
    KSA is a sexy woman.

  35. ..,agree with java, don’t see any connection from SY although she’s beautiful
for me she is just posing no connection at all…
unlike KSA you can see that the camera loves her every pose in any angle…

  36. sung yuri’s really good-looking but she’s so blank as an actress. her emotions don’t come off as real or intense, and i agree with the post that she may attempt to look sexy, but she doesn’t actually give off any sexy vibes. sung yuri’s doesn’t have the confident aura to be really sexy.

  37. i totally love the hair too. I agree with you saying that she’s skinny and that kim sun-ah is totally the perfect gal to say she’s super sexy. i totally love han chae-young but that’s just me. :D

  38. I really love all the outfits and I think she’s a really good actress! She did an awesome job in Hong Gil Dong so I don’t know what some ppl are talking about!
Anyway, she’s not that big yet so they haven’t really seen the warm and cute dorky side of her. Sung Yuri is beautiful and talented!

  39. wanna know why people harsh on sung yuri? it’s because before Hong Gil Dong her name was synonymous with “crap acting.” i’m not being mean, for real, if you look up news articles since her debut they’re all about how she’s an acting disappointment and how at least she has a pretty face since that’s her only asset. she wasn’t super good OR bad in HGD, just average, so newbie fans get all defensive like “She’s not awful!” well yeah, but she’s not great either and most people who’ve known her history remember what craptastic drivel she did before.

  40. ^^ Not true. Her first dramas were predictably poor but she has gotten progressively better throughout each one. In her previous drama, Snow Queen, she was very believable as an arrogant, possibly bi-polar, suicidal, terminally ill character and then did a complete 180 playing a ditzy, warm hearted heroine in Hong Gil Dong. She is definately not at the level of some of the top dramatic actresses out there but I think her “disappointment as an actress” has been greatly exaggerated.
