"I don’t really believe that high school relationships will be strong enough to the point that they lead to extreme familial and personal sacrifice, as experienced by Makino."

I think it makes sense in that, especially in Asian high school systems, a girl like Makino could make the great leap in social class IF she succeeded at Eitoku Academy. That was to her what Harvard is to us. If she did well enough, if she made the right friends, she could be set for the rest of her life. Early on in the manga, even though Makino was "The Weed", it was on her mind, what F4 (and especially Doumyouji) could do for her. Social class was always on her mind. She couldn't reconcile Doumyouji into her life, because she could not separate their identiies from their social standing. It's easier to articulate that in a college drama, and essentially the HanaDan Season 2 was "kinda" their way of doing that.

"I believe I once read about Erikson’s?? stages of psychological development, and adolescence, involving the discovery of personal identity, occurs before young adulthood, which is comprised of love relationships, children, etc."

Yeah, there were kinda doing that with Season 2 of the drama (marvelously recontextualizing all the manga bits not used in S1.) It was very uneven as a story, but for hardcore Makino and Doumyoji fans, it was perfect pitch speculation of their relationship as adults. Tsukasa had morally accepted his place as scion of the Douymouji family. Tsukushi developed awareness of social class without letting it define her identity or self-esteem. (And it helped that she did succeed at Eitoku Academy) Rather than fight the future, they were going to make one.

"What was successful about Nobuta is that the drama did not dwell on love relationships, but instead focused on friendship."

Kinda amazing that HanaDan, Nobuta, and 1 Litre all dropped in winter 2005. That's D-addicts right there. ;)

Nobuta works on many levels. It's a coming-of-age story using bits of magic realism to express how adolescents live life in the mundane and incoherently wonderful. It's an example of a director indulging his inner Terry Gilliam, creating a surreal, absurdist blur of a show where life is all about the weird, the miraculous, and the temporary. It's an idol drama about idols, about silly, cavalier Johnny-isms, about pretty boys and horror movie girls, about stupid impressions and homoerotic smalltalk, and how acting is totally, totally overrated if the idols (Hard Day's Night, the original Ocean's 10, Tropic Thunder!) are having a blast. (And when was the last time Yamapi looked like he enjoyed acting?) And, above all, it was two Johnny Boys having a . . . . moment . . . . in the ocean. Sigh.

What I see as a problem with the entire overall high school is the depth of Makino and Domyouji's relationship. As belleza pointed out, perhaps Asian relationships tend to develop better in college. I don't really believe that high school relationships will be strong enough to the point that they lead to extreme familial and personal sacrifice, as experienced by Makino. This may occur in Gossip Girl, but the characters do not exactly take the romance to marriage, as indicated in Hanadan. Therefore, I really hope the casting will be strong in that enough chemistry is generated for the relationship to actually be believable. What was successful about Nobuta is that the drama did not dwell on love relationships, but instead focused on friendship. Perhaps the high school age is not exactly positioned for marriage-type relationships. I'm not saying that such succesful relationships may not occur, but they probably are less common.

Also, I find it interesting that Makino is catapulted into adulthood by the appearance of Domyouji. I believe I once read about Erikson's?? stages of psychological development, and adolescence, involving the discovery of personal identity, occurs before young adulthood, which is comprised of love relationships, children, etc. If the characters experience both in a mixed-up sort of way, then some sort of psychological confusion would occur. It may indeed be better (more believable) to have the characters somewhat developed mentally (during high school) and to refine their characteristics in a college setting.

Wow. I think my brain's been twisted today. Probably doesn't make sense. ^-^
