“Barbie doll” Han Chae-young teams up again with director Jeon Ki-sang, who’d made her into a star in 2005′s Delightful Girl Chun-hyang with Jae Hee, in the upcoming Boys Before Flowers.
She’ll take on a cameo role in the drama as an older “noona” on the receiving end of the affections of one of the main castmates; although her role isn’t explicitly named, I can only assume she’ll be taking on Shizuka’s character as the beautiful older model whom Rui loves, which puts her most in contact with Kim Hyun-joong out of the four F4 members.
If so, I can say that this is a pretty great bit of casting; Han Chae-young isn’t the best actor around (and worse than that, she doesn’t seem to be improving any with each new project), but Shizuka’s role is more image-based than acting-based, so she should fit right in. She can also pull of the calmer, older vibe to Gu Hye-sun‘s Makino character — now we can only wait to see who gets cast as badass older sis Tsubaki. (Hm, I could see someone like Lee Hana doing a fair Tsubaki, or even Shin Mina or Han Eun-jung. Gong Hyo-jin?)
This will be Han’s third time working with Jeon; in addition to DGCH, she had a brief cameo at the end of his 2006 rom-com My Girl.

Yup, Han Chae-young has been cast as Rui’s love interest. My friends and I are actually howling in disappointment, because we really aren’t big fans of hers. But I guess it’s not so bad as to put me off watching this drama.
As for the older sister character, I really like Lee Hana, but I don’t know if she could be convincing “badass”. To me, she’s always been more of an endearing 4D type of person (not unlike Kim Hyun-joong, in my opinion, lol). Maybe I’m biased, but the Taiwanese version of sis Tsubaki has always been my fav. Ha!
Hm…just based on those pictures (I don’t know any of those actresses very well), I like Gong Hyo-Jin’s look best. She comes across as sweet, but could stab you in the back at any second for your own good. Which is exactly how Tsubaki needs to be.
I’m kinda disappointed actually. HCY’s okay, she’s pretty and all, but for some reason, I can’t see her as Shizuka. Her feature is strong and sharp, while I envision Shizuka as a softer person (I love Taiwanese Teng Tang Jing more than Japanese Shizuka anyway). Putting aside acting talent, I actually thought Kim Tae Hee fit the bill, but the girl is way too high profile.
As for Tsubaki, didn’t they cast Han Go Eun for that? Or was it still unconfirmed?
Yay Han Chae Young! but I’m sort of waiting for her to lead in a new project…I agree that she can pull off the older-sis vibe, but I, also agreeing with deeta, don’t think she can do soft that well. HCY’s always got a sort of fighting! i’m-going-to-be-in-your-face (but not necessarily in an evil way) vibe. HCY’s acting isn’t that great (but she isn’t bad either- if only she can learn to cry…) but her strong woman vibe makes me want to watch her. I actually think HCY would make a better Tsubaki- who goes and hits her little brother!
I heard that Han Go Eun was Tsubaki? Someone on soompi said they saw it on her Daum profile or something. I’m not sure though.
If Han Go-eun is Tsubaki, it’s not yet on her Daum profile or in the news media. I’ve seen a few Korean fans blog about her being Tsubaki but i haven’t seen any info to back it up yet. It doesn’t mean it’s not true, but I’m not jumping the gun until these castings are confirmed by official sources.
I completely agree with javabeans that Shizuka is an image-based role and therefore I think Han Chae Young will be great in the role.
As for Han Go Eun, I’ve never seen her in anything but she seems to fit the image I have of Tsubaki, so hopefully, it’s good casting!

I loved Nanako Matsushima as Tsubaki, she was sisterly but tough and it was easy to see how Makini liked her.
Han Chae-young is not that great as a actress but the Shizuka role is not that demanding so maybe she could pull it off.

i disagree with most of you guys here in that i totally see Han Chae Young as shizuka. in fact, i think this might be the only casting choice i agree with…until the drama airs, of course and i see how the others do in their roles. i also think Han Go Eun would also fit as tsubaki. the older sister is tough but endearing and also classy, polished and somewhat glamorous so HGE could play that role.
I already have a clear choice on who I want to play the tough loving, elegant, gorgeous noona of Domouji even before this korean project was announced, okay 2 choices for Tsubaki: Ha Ji Won or Han Ye Suel FTW!!!
^ Okay, just read the above comments that Han Go Eun might be Tsubaki. Pretty good choice, I think she fits the role too (although Ha Ji Won is still my ideal Tsubaki). Also I can see Han Chae Young being Shizuka because she can do ‘princessy’ roles, which is essentially what Shizuka is – a princess type.

I personally still have a lot of lingering affection for Han Chae Young from her Choon Hyang days, in spite of everything I’ve heard about her (lack of ) acting ability in her more recent projects, none of which I’ve seen. So all in all I’m happy with this development, and I will say this for the girl. She is prettyyyyyyyyy.

Shizuka is I think ONE of the characters that can be enlarged within the kdrama, and so can Tsubaki’s story. I think both have some very interesting story. Yes, from how she’s been portrayed, she’s Makino’s idol, and Han Chae Young’s angelic face and air will be enough for that and her short love with Rui. But their relationship in the manga is actually much more dynamic…. This is one of the things that I hoped the kdrama would pick up on and take advantage of to distinguish itself from the TWdrama and Jdrama…. But them casting her probably hints that she will be just a pretty face. Sad.
As for Tsubaki… Lee Hana seems like a fair Tsubaki. Shin Mina’s face is literally made for Tsubaki. That bright, energetic face but without any naivety or innocence.

han chae young as shizuka’s character? i prefer someone like song hye kyo, the pretty girl next door type.. but chae young is okei too… hope that this boys over flower would turn out to be a great show… i am fan of meteor garden (except the second season haha) and hana yori dango 1&2..
