Open Thread #51

Open Thread #51 already? Considering that means I’ve had almost a year’s worth of open threads (and I hadn’t even started them until the blog had been going a while), I’m a little taken aback and how fast time has flown. (Also a little shocking is the recap index, and seeing how many recaps have been written since this little ol’ site got going.)

Anything else going on? Everyone still got their money? Is it sad that in this horrific economy, the news that made me most sad was hearing that Mother’s cookies was going out of business? Must get self to store and stock up on those inimitable pink-n-white frosted cookies! (I feel like Elaine on Seinfeld, hoarding a discontinued favorite.)

SONG OF THE DAY

Amy Winehouse – “Me and Mr. Jones.” Oh, Amy Winehouse. This is my favorite song of hers, I think, although I wish I could listen to her music without associating her trainwreck life with it… [ Download ]

I heard about Mothers last night was also saddened. Don't feel bad on hoarding...that's what I'm going to do! And call my mother, and make her buy some more, too....: (

I got my 401k statements yesterday! Looks like I'll be working till I die! It's only on paper and with time it will recover but it still hurts to see your money disappear.
Right now I need some of those cookies to feel better!

Iceland's situation: SCARY
The whole world's crumblin'! Yesterday in one of my classes the professor totally freaked us out. She spoke the truth: yet it was so painful to hear! Bad time to be in a part of the world where I can really do a lot of traveling and spend a lot of money: except I shouldn't. Ah, such is life. Good luck everyone.
Time really has flown. I've been following you for a very long time too, that means. Wow.
Is Amy Winehouse still breathing? She re-defines rock bottom, unfortunately. So much talent. So sad.

Currently trying to visualize Lee Byung Hun with Kim Tae Hee in Iris. Love Story in the hunt for red October?

@anybody who lives in SoCal,

Uhh does anybody know what musical acts will be playing at this year's OC Korean Festival (in Garden Grove?) I didn't go last year and Loveholic made an appearance. SUCKS. Any surprises this year?

Haven't looked at 401K or IRA statements for six months now. I'm in the denial stage. I feel bad for people who are getting ready to retire or send their kids to college. The money is not there.

Ah,,,but they brought the Today sponge back on the market...so...
I miss Seinfeld. You can practically relate any situation to Seinfeld episodes.

But...I would be more depressed in Nestle Tollhouse went out of business...that's the best cookies from frozen cookie dough.

Definitely some crazy times for everyone.

I wonder what we'll say later in life about these days.

I resigned last year out of total disgust with the mortgage company I'd worked for almost 14 years, decided to take 3-6 months off to decompress, and last October all hell broke loose. Or at least started. Boy, was I glad I'd cashed in my stock and stock options back then! So at least my retirement money is still intact, but no job options since then (in my field) and very very slow house sales in my neighborhood thanks to the depreciation. Guess it's just sit tight time. Hope we can afford it. Not that I can complain -- many people are suffering much more than I am. I'm just getting tired of cleaning house and ripping off this godawful wall paper the previous owner put in every single room, plus trying to renovate on a shoestring budget. At this point I would be happy to get back what we've put into this place, especially as it was supposed to be an investment! My girlfriend in CA has lost over $100,000 in house value, so again, I remind myself, I'm not so bad off, but things are getting very scary.

I really feel sorry for small businesses. It's going to be a tough period for them. Our local Quiznos closed (waah) -- in fact the only thing still open in a block of eateries down the street from me is the Starbucks.

I love this website mainly because it cheers me up (when there aren't any tragic deaths). "Is Amy Winehouse still breathing?" is a great pun.

Okay, i just went to stock up on my Mother's cookies, and figured out ONE of the probable reasons they're going out of business -- they're freaking expensive! I did not remember a package of store cookies (not fresh baked) costing $4.99 before. Phew.

Hm, this is the best time to bury myself in kdramas, and not worrying about the stock market, my bank accounts, my shrinking retirement fund, my neighbors moving out because they can't afford the house.... Thank God for Kdramas...there is still some joy and pleasure in this world...0)

@ChilliPepper- I'm with you on the kdramas.. This time calls for a marathon to forget about the current financial crisis.... Not to mention I work for the Australian taxation Office, so all our jobs are pretty much hanging by a thread considering the budget of the aus government atm.. sighs..
That and I had plans to travel in Dec-bought my ticket and filed for my leave, but I'm thinking that if I don't get enough money together and if the AUD keeps dropping I'm getting me a refund and just getting a cabin by the beach to holiday in this year....

So the US owes China about a trillion dollars. When Bush steps down...I wonder if he'll have the guts that he did this country proud.

I'm moving to Hong Kong....they speak English there anyways.

Hm, how's Korea's financial situation? Is it as bad as the U.S.?
Hopefully, they are not too tight with their budget because my favorite actor's movie is coming out this month, and I hope it'd do well. 0)

"But…I would be more depressed in Nestle Tollhouse went out of business…that’s the best cookies from frozen cookie dough."

NESTLE went out of business? Crackers! No wonder I was thinking about buying some cookie dough D: Looks like I'll need to stop by and get an extra-extra large thing to last me the rest of the semester.

I'm on my last leg of Undergrad and applyin' to Grad. I'm crossing my fingers I get in somewhere. Otherwise it'll be Job Hunting o.O

How sad the only nice thing right now is gas is going down? Its below $3 back in Oklahoma, US and here its more like $3.30 in Vermont, US!

Here, here on the k-dramas. I've been burning my candle at both ends for classes, cross country, and drama club. 2AM bedtimes along with 8AM wake ups are not agreeing with me. Sleep yet?

Finally on the housing notice. Apparently what's interesting is a lot of people lately have been putting their houses up as corperate housing to gain some extra income since its also short stays. Its intriguing.
