I’ll be the first to admit that I am a fan of the old school japanese pink films of the 70s. I’ve only seen a couple but one that really stands out in my mind was “female prisoner” series with Meiko Kaji. What really struck me about these films is that although they could be considered “soft core” the female characters are very strong and empowered. I agree that some of the pink films can be interpreted as feminist, because most of the ones I’ve seen have dealt with victimized females out for revenge. Not that I condone violence or vigilantism (is that a word?). Anyway, I really look up to strong women, especially ones that kick butt. (Side note: I think Quentin Tarantino is also heavily influenced by this genre because he sampled the theme song in Female Prisoner for his movie Kill Bill, so yeah. I think that makes them cool.) In conclusion, I think it’s cool that they’re targeting the female audience for this festival whether it’s for safety reasons or sisterhood.
