Boys Before Flowers production press conference

We’re only two weeks away from the premiere of the much-anticipated Hana Yori Dango remake, Boys Before Flowers, and the cast came out on December 22 for the production press conference.

Not much more to add to the already sizable pre-show buzz, so before we get to the photos, I’ll just say, once again: This is one damn good-looking cast. (Also: Yes, the guys look a little cartoonishly dressed, but they most likely came in character, and if Hanadan is anything, it’s over the top with the F4 looks. I think they’ve done a pretty good job translating the clothing and overall appearance of the characters, even if I do think Kim Hyun-joong’s scarf-and-cardigan combo is ridiculous — ajumma meets dandy! — for a real-world outfit.)

From left to right in first photo below: Kim Joon (“Woo-bin”), Lee Min-ho (“Jun-pyo”), Kim Hyung-joon (“Ji-hoo”), and Kim Bum (Yi-jung):

Lee Min-ho described this experience as feeling “like I’d won the lottery.” However, he also feels the tremendous pressure of high expectations, which was particularly burdensome at the outset, but “as time passed it became better.”

In other circumstances, I’d hate Gu Hye-sun‘s dress, and I still don’t think I quite understand it, but she looks sweet and happy. She does look very frilly and feminine, and I might have been worried if I didn’t know that she can play tough, as befitting her “Jan-di” character. But I don’t worry too much about her role.

Kim Hyun-joong said of his career transition: “Being a singer debuting as an actor gave me a lot of worry and apprehension.” As it does the rest of us, I’m sure. He, like Lee Min-ho, will probably bear the brunt of all the comparisons to previous versions; he said he would do his best to show a natural Rui.

Asked about what it’s like acting with Gu Hye-sun and Han Chae-young, he said, “We haven’t shot that many episodes yet, but there have been a kiss scene and an embrace. Han Chae-young is called a living Barbie doll, and to act with her gave me a great feeling. The kiss scene with Gu Hye-sun is the most memorable.”

Kim Bum just keeps growing taller and taller, doesn’t he?

Kim Joon remains the biggest question mark, because he’s the least known and the least discussed. Then again, I suppose he’s the least prominent of the main cast, which allows him a little wiggle room. I hold out hope that he surprises us all for the better, though…

My Goodness they do look as if the came out of the manga..
She's got great looking pins, GHS. that green thing in the middle whats that for.. it's just too much I think.. I guess something has got to stand out from her being with those gorgeous men.
Does Lee Min Ho had to have a perm? just wondering..the rest are just pure eye candy..
I do hope everything is worth all the hype....

"I think they’ve done a pretty good job translating the clothing and overall appearance of the characters,"

Absolutely. This is the first HYD cast that I felt looked genuinely "princely" (while keep the spirit of the manga) from the get-go. Rui is unnaturally pretty/ethereal; Doumyouji looks arrogant and wounded; Sojiro looks boyish, perhaps naive (worth mentioning that the J-drama's worldy, rather colonial Sojiro was pretty much the opposite of the manga; Kim Bum's look is much more spot on); and Akira looks happy to be there. :)

"even if I do think Kim Hyun-joong’s scarf-and-cardigan combo is ridiculous — ajumma meets dandy! — for a real-world outfit.)"

Korean Rui is been groomed as the new Bae Yong Joon. So "dandy ajuhmma" is just about perfect. ;)

"She does look very frilly and feminine, and I might have been worried if I didn’t know that she can play tough, as befitting her “Jan-di” character."

Yeah, Goo Hye Sun's doll-like dress is epik fail. It looks like she borrowed it from Nam Gyu-ri. If this were Sakurako, I can see the point in it. Also, it makes her look much older relative to the F4.

They all look happy... esp Goo Hye Sun! I think I'm gonna adore her as Jandi..

Hyun Joong looks really weird in that outfit. Don't like it at all..
Min Ho has this weird smirk on his face.. and OMGosh at his perm! 0_0 (but i think he fits the character well)

And Kim Bum.. he's a total sweetheart.. <3333

ARRRGHH!
Kim Bum, you HOT HOT boy/man.
The 4 of them do make a very good F4...the girl seems out of place, but then of course, as all HYD fanatics would scream, she's supposed to...*rolls eyes*
I'm very happy with all of them except Gu Hye Sun, who'll just have to win me over with some stellar acting....or something....loll
I'm very excited and I have HIGH expectations...just like I did for Worlds Within (and that did not turn out well)...hope I'm not disappointed this time!

I actually kind of like the dress. I love the frilly-ness of it, and I would even like the flower-bow-thing if it were a bit smaller. The way it is now covers up both her chest and her waist...and somehow, I think that's something a woman should try to accentuate, not cover up.

i'm so excited for this. dangg. i wish my korean was better (like, a LOT better lol) so i didn't have to wait for english subs.

ps; the phrase "wiggle room" made me laugh for several minutes straight. I'm sure it wasn't that funny/adorable to anyone else...but this just further convinces me that EVERYTHING is ten times more hilarious at 1:30am. lolll.

Kim Bum is just... urgh. o_o Oh god, he's so young, but he's so.. not (at the same time)?

xD I can see he's just growing right along into his character.

The rest look pretty good as well. I don't like Hyunjoong's outfit nor Minho's pants nor Joon's bowtie/sneakers nor Hyesun's general pooftiness, but other than that, it seems all good.

I've also discovered that Lee Minho is not photogenic (AT ALL) but he looks pretty good on film, so it should be fine.

Funny to hear Goo Hye Sun refered to as looking like a "gift" because that is exactly how I've felt about this girl since the first moment I laid eyes on her on the deck of that ship that was taking farmgirl "Yang Gukwha" from her home in Yanbien to Seoul in Pure In Heart. The gift that keeps on giving. I can't wait for the privilage of spending the next several months basking in the warmth of her sunny character. It's going to be a great year for KDrama. Now if we can only get Yoon Eun Hye to stop globe-trotting and sign her to another series....

Happy Holidays, shipmates!!!

His Gucci suit is nice though, but the pants.. reminds me of clown pants. What's up with Kim Joon's clothes? bow tie vs sweater vs sneakers.. seriously, who dressed them up?
Other than that.. they're all darn freakin' hot...!!!

Belted sweater!!! I know Rui is supposed to be sensitive and artistic but ....Also I don't like his hair! It's not falling naturally...kind of lopsided.
I am just loving LMH as Domyoji. Imperiously tall and good looking, and that unruly hair is fabulous.
Kim Bum is so handsome. He maybe be all grown up and tall but that cute smile is still very childlike.

Doumyouji is supposed to have big time curls. Think Prince meets the Chiquita Banana! Of all the adaptations, this is the most uhhh "civilized" take on his hair.

Lets be fair.
They are characters coming out of a popular manga dated 1992.
I am like #2 ellie. Very very devoted fans of HYD, anime (wow, must see ), manga and the various versions of tv productions. I think the Korean production has done a very good job to give us interpretation of all the characters as in the manga.

I want to give some credit to Gu Hye-Sun. So far with all the press releases I have seen, she really shows her acting talent despite being older then Makino. If you have seen all the manga book cover, the Makino on the cover is always feminine and girl-like. Yes, that green gift bow belt surely gives us the Xmas feel.

Kim Bum, Kim Bum, Kim Bum ^^^^^^^^^
He is my heavy bet of what comes out first from the Korean F4. He has the charisma. I have not watched East of Eden. It is just his look from all the pictures that attracts me.

"Very very devoted fans of HYD, anime (wow, must see ), manga and the various versions of tv productions."

The HYD anime (the last 1/3 not so much) was one of my favorite shows. The musical score is gorgeous, and the artwork (somewhat like Honey and Clover) is impressionistic, deeply moody and fairytale-like.

The 1995 movie is kinda . . . Makino was played by one of the true J-idol queens of the Golden Era of J-drama, Yuuki Uchida, and Rui was played by still heartthrob Naohito Fujiki.

He is my heavy bet of what comes out first from the Korean F4"

Worth mentioning that Kim Bum may have a very minor role in this show. The Sojiro/Yuki storyline is not a major part of the manga.

I actually hope they bring in Kazuya, the "Duckie" of HanaDan. Word is that they're bringing in Kim Hye Sun, probably later in the show.

you hot guy that's in between boyhood and manhood!!!
*soul leaves body*
lol.

and GHS.. still looks the oldest out of them :p
(wait.. is she the oldest? or is she on the same age range as them?)
she gives me this "noona will take good care of you boys *winks*" feeling to me.
hahaha.

*Sighs* that's because she is older than them. She even joked and asked them not to make fun of her or call her noona. She's fine as Makino/Jandi not many 25 years old can pulled off a 18-19 year old character.

makino 's acting is too exaggerated whereas hyun joong seems not catching the role playing well yet.....

sorry but really think they can't compete to the japanese version at all ...

i hope there will have some improvement when the drama comes out.. let's wait and see...

Presenting the entrance of the Korean F4. 7 minutes of footage from Boys over Flowers

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xe5H7urfbiA

Quick commentary:

1) OMG it's like the last 3 years of GHS's career has never happened. She brought back Nonstop 5.

2) It looks like they're doing a more literal adaptation of the manga (like Meteor Garden.) Each of the characters is pretty close to the manga.

3) OMG, this is one frigging expensive looking show. Dude, THIS Doumyouji's mansion is 3x larger than the original.

Due to the hype over BBF, I was curious about the Japanese HYD and I am now completely obsess with HYD, having watched the first series last Friday, have bought the HYD2 on YesAsia even though it cost an arm and a leg but it was English subbed and had those extra bit, have put down my order for HYD Final for the English version, have religiously plow threw the internet reading everything I can find on HYD and in the process become totally obsess with the whole Matsumoto Jun/ Inaoe Mao relationship that I am going through YouTube watching all the bts and interviews of this couple. So obsess that I have been neglecting the BBF thread for the last couple of days. I have not been this obsessed since "Strongest ChillWoo".

So I am happy to see BBF press conference and seeing HyeSun looking so pretty. I actually love that dress on her (initially I hate the green flower but the more I look at it, the more I like it, very Sarah Jessica Parker. She should have worn this dress for the SCW's press conference) and her hair really suits her, she looked damn cute. And her smiley, happy face and that she has a good rapport with MinHo......I am so looking forward to seeing BBF.

From the 7-minute video, Lee Min-ho's acting from what I've seen has put me at ease. He seems capable, and he certainly looks the part of Tsukasa.

Kim Hyun-joong's acting, although I can see him putting in all the effort he's got, is slightly still not up to par. It's getting there, and he knows what Rui's supposed to be like, but something is lacking in his acting. I still have hope that things will get better as the episodes begin airing because the 7-minute trailer didn't show too much of his lines.

Goo Hye-sun's acting is just not doing it for me. I was totally expecting more from her as Makino Tsukushi. I don't know if it's because of overacting or simply because they're pushing for the cute image a bit too far, but it's just not rubbing me in the right ways. Hopefully, I will change my mind later on.

Overall though, the production is mindblowingly amazing. Even if there is a little lack of acting, I'm sure everything else about the series will overcompensate for it since it isn't like the acting is horrendous (flashes of Dennis Oh come to mind!).

I seriously cannot wait for this, especially after so many disastrous happenings with East of Eden.

thanks for the good hope for kim joon.
he's like the biggest reason i'm gonna watch this drama, and i boast that to every place i go....lol..
he's one of my fav dude in kpop....and i so hope his acting will be just as good as his rap/performances...am keeping my faith for him
from the press conference.....
hyunjoong n kimjoon dressed very boyband/idol group-ish.....lol
kimbum dressed very actor-ish...(and thus i am not surprised his apperance turn out great....or rather...normal)
and minho.....lmao, i think he dressed junpyo-ish......he's still in his character...hehe, not saying it's good or bad...
gu hyesun......lol...iono what to say...i just went to another site n saw another celeb wearing the exact dress....
how i wish people would stop the lame comparison with jap one.....it's so exaggerated, n getting tiring...i'd rather everything to be compared with the manga, the manga please. that's the only original one.

thanks for the pics though.^^

"i’d rather everything to be compared with the manga, the manga please. that’s the only original one."

Without actually evaluating the acting and the psychological stuff, this F4 is pretty close to perfect to the manga while mantaining some unique wrinkles. We know that the Korean Rui is an accomplished classical musician -- probably doesn't play the viola, but that's the right idea. We know that the Korean Sojiro is associated with antiques and arts+crafts, which is again the right interpretation of Sojiro. The Korean Akira looks vaguely associated with a seedy organization, again spot on. And Korean Doumyouji's crib is FRIGGING AMAZING.

The other thing is, you can also pick up the Goong/Goong S vibes in the way they do the F4 entrance at school. I don't love it; but it's also much truer to the bling bling world that she'd be surrounded in. The J-drama HanaDan made the school into a kind of F4 Castle, and Meteor Gardne made school look like the Frat House from Hell.

"Goo Hye-sun’s acting is just not doing it for me. I was totally expecting more from her as Makino Tsukushi. I don’t know if it’s because of overacting or simply because they’re pushing for the cute image a bit too far, but it’s just not rubbing me in the right ways. Hopefully, I will change my mind later on."

I'm totally withholding judgement since I've already expressed that she looked a little "noona-ish" in the posters. GHS's a good actress (see King and I), and she's still good at making cartoony faces, true to her uljjang past. But they look good together. Lee Pil Mo reminds me of a cross between 80s Andrew McCarthy and 80s James Spader.

For some reason I kept expecting Japanese to come out.. ahhaha. I think Minho is okay as Domouji ... don't know about the others yet (much as I love Kim Bum, the clothing choices are somewhat weird for me)
