Lee Da-hae: simply tired, or irresponsible actress?

Lee Da-hae has quit East of Eden. Her decision comes without warning, and is so sudden that viewers have been caught completely off-guard and are wondering why.

She posted on the show’s message board on the 22nd, “It was confusing to take on this character of Hye-rin, who even I can’t understand… As an actor in this drama, I feel a duty and responsibility to stay with it through the end. But I’m sorry to tell you I can no longer act in this situation, feeling this way.” She added, “I don’t want to act saying and doing such illogical, out-of-character things in this role that makes me look like an idiot.”

Apparently the production is currently consulting with the writer on how to write her out of the show; Lee will probably appear for a few more episodes. (Who wants to bet that insulting the writer in her goodbye message isn’t the best way to get a glorious send-off?) Her action has spawned a lot of speculation among fans, some who would like to be understanding and others who decry her act as irresponsible and unprofessional.

Hm, I do have sympathy for actors who get stuck in crap work who feel fooled that they are caught in something they had not signed up for. (I also felt for Kim Jung-eun, who attempted to quit the disastrous Princess Lulu, which lost its mind midway through its run.) Then again, maybe Lee just got tired of playing second fiddle when she thought she’d be the queen bee? Perhaps with one lead actress gone, the drama will forgo its rumored extension; then again, maybe Song Seung-heon and Lee Yeon-hee ‘shippers will get what they want with a lovers’ reunion (or so I gather from all the, uh, vociferous comments in that vein).

It’s too bad, though; I don’t think this helps any regarding Lee Da-hae’s budding prima donna reputation.

@100, I can kind of understand what 98 is saying although she (or he) probably should have not have generalized. I would say it differently, but I can understand the frustration. I might say "Lee Da Hae has a lot of very loud, very defensive, and very annoying fans who post copious comments online and lash out at anyone who does not love their actress idol as much as they do, and that subset of her fandom makes ALL of her fandom seem immature and stuck-up."

well I am not a great fan of EOE cos I found the storyline really boring and the lead actress playing YR so boring but I tried to look some of episodes of the show because of the character of LDH cos she was refreshing among those pity women crying and shouting about their loves, women without strong self.

anyway the news that LDH quit the drama is good news cos personnally lately LDH character hasn t meaning in this show anymore. HR giving a flower, HR buying press stufff, HR walking a dog, WTF!!!!even her family hasn t meaning in the show anymore. So quiting is the best she could do but still she will get a really bad reward for those decision and she could just have stuck to the serie till the end. She isn t unprofessional at all, she just has her conviction and remai with them...

If she decides to quit, good for her having the courage but fans, be prepared for the criticisms. I bet most of you would be screaming “unprofessional” the minute someone else did the same thing.

LDH’s HARDCORE fans idealizes her so much that in their eyes it’s never her fault but someone else’s fault! There’s always excuses. That’s to me is a big turn off !!

Like Lee Dae Hae now we understand why the scriptwriter Miss Na fall sick.
They are both being pressured to suit others requests.

As for hye rin's character -- first pairing her with dong wook THEN with
mr beak, THEN with dong chul. They are all involved with other women.
And each time with A few minutes acting.

No wonder she felt guilty to accept her pay cheque.
Honesty the best policy.

AJA ! AJA!! Lee Dae Hae go for your degree course.!!

why other country film the all season before showing to public, like american series, tvb, taiwanese etc

why korean drama filming one by one epiode.

I guess she thinks she's all that. I can't believe she quit because she couldn't take being the second fiddle. Whatever, she didn't complete her obligations under the contract to see through her character until the end, so i guess she will probably have to pay a fee for canceling the contract. I guess in the end it's her loss. I don't know how to call her quitting except that it was absolutely unprofessional. She's getting paid to do a job, do it well or quit and get a bad reputation (i guess she's going for the second option). I think this was a really bad move for LDH. LDH needed EOE to rebound from the failures of her previous dramas. I guess she'll have to go digging for a new project...that's if any producers want her.

re: giaht, I think there is a rather large misconception that Korean dramas are made in completely different ways than other dramas, say U.S. series. American shows, like Korean shows, write and film over the course of the season. There's no way all those shows are filmed seasons in advance. Both Korean and U.S. drama series get a head start and begin production before the show premieres, but when the show does air, the staff is still writing and filming.

The main difference is (1) U.S. shows don't have a definite end date and are written to last indefinitely, and (2) Korean productions tend to write and shoot much, much closer to the airdate than U.S. shows, which have a buffer of about six to eight weeks. (Korean shows start out with a buffer of about six to eight weeks, but many times toward the end of the run they are filming a week before broadcast, and often the week of.)

I have a feeling that most LDH fans are probably supporting her decision because they can't look pass the fact that she is their favorite actress. Seriously, would you be pissed off if you were put into a group to do a group assignment, everyone in that group was assigned a task but near the end of the due date, one member of the group pulls out saying "i'm sorry but i don't really understand what I'm doing anymore" and forces everyone to take on more work or everyone is re-assigned tasks. Sorry about the example, it's the best I could think of right now LOL. Anyways, I think it was really unprofessional to do what she did. If I were one of the actors on EOE, I would be pissed.

i am not an LDH fan but i like the actress just like Han Ji Hye. i would not call her unprofessional for what she had done. what she did is simply what happened in other profession. people resigned when they are not happy anymore with what they are doing. would that be unprofessional, when you find yourself useless in your job? it just so happen she is a celebrity, and like normal people she is quitting the show because she is not happy with her character development. T.R. Knight(George O'Malley) of GREY'S ANATOMY is quitting the show, because according to him, he is not happy with how his character developing in the current season. is that being professional? i don't think so. i think as an actor you have the responsibility to give quality products to your audience and not simply stick or cling on the role for monetary reason. i don't think LDH is even being prima-donna in her action.

Kim Jung Eun was bashed excessively when she posted her rant at her fan cafe over the disastrous Princess Lulu...people called her unprofessional, but to me that was bravery for her to speak up against the writer as she has responsibility to her audience...to give them a good product and not simply use her and Jung Joon Ho's name to keep the series going. this must also be a wake up call to all writers who simply cannot put in writing what they really have in mind for a particular character. the production company and TV station must require these writers to finish 75% of the script prior to casting so that whoever signs in the production, that actor knows what her/his character really is.

LDH will have better project coming her way...it is for her good and her fans to leave EOE as ever since she is the only character in the story who is totally out-of-synch...she has a story of her own in the story and has no bearing at all in the whole story.

US TV Series or Latin American Telenovelas can add and discharge an actor amidst production, especially when there is unprofessionalism off camera. Isaiah Washington(Dr. Preston Burke) of GREY'S ANATOMY was fired from the production for gay slur (off cam) which was uncalled for. he was a very good actor in the series and one of the interesting characters. on camera he was very professional, but off cam with that gay slur he made, prompted the producer to fire him. he was doing his job, however, he made a statement offending his fellow actor. just like in any profession, one can be terminated or can resign. in a latin telenovela production the lead actor was terminated 75% of the production, because of off camera misbehavior(coming to work drunk if I am not mistaken), he was fired despite being the lead actor and the script writing was changed to accomodate his departure. i think people should start accepting that these celebrities are human like us in other professions. at one point we decide to do things that prompts our boss to terminate us, and at one point we also resign when we do not see the value of what we are doing anymore.

I was a bit shocked that she decided to quit, I wouldn't say she was unprofessional. If she feels that heart isn't into her work (whether the reason is health or the direction of her character), she should quit. Why stick with it if it is not what you expected. Personally, I hate the Dong-chul/Young-ran storyline, I think a love triangle between Dong-Chul, Hye-rin, Dong-wook would have made the story more interesting considering all the other things happening in the show.

"US TV Series or Latin American Telenovelas can add and discharge an actor amidst production"

There is a big difference between US and Korean dramas in this case though. Korean dramas are single-run and with a fixed ending. US actors are contracted for multiple seasons (or at least a full season, unless they're just guest stars). So it's not a big deal to fire Isaiah Washington in between seasons because technically he's just not being renewed. Lee Da Hae quitting is a big deal because she's literally QUITTING a commitment without fulfilling the intial terms of her contract, just walking away because she got "sick of" her role.

excuse me T.R. Knight signed a 3 year extended contract and this is the 1st year of the 3 year contract he signed and he has become unhappy for his O'Malley character when Grey's Anatomy is not even halfway yet. he told the producer he is quitting and they are just accomodating his request...

he is still under 3 more seasons and sad to say he is quitting on the 1st of the 3 seasons...

yeah US and Korean series are different, but Latin Telenovelas are no difference to Korean or other foreign series, particularly this EOE which has 50 or more episodes...in other countries they can terminate an actor or an actor can leave...

anyway, LDH's character in the series has no importance at all, i don't think it will even affect the flow of the story as ever since her character has no bearing at all in the main plot. her departure from the series made the writing easier for the scriptwriter...because unfortunately the writer from the start made her look stupid...i was even wondering what is her importance in the over-crowded story.

^ Yeah and TR is hella lucky the producers aren't suing the pants off him and are letting him go. If they wanted they could make his life hell by either forcing him to stay or entangling him with lawsuits. So he is not exactly a good comparison to make here. Besides, his choice to quit doesn't make LDH look any better.

Hmmm I don't think either that she is unprofessional!!
Befor the drama even started MBC really stated that the Storyline would be especially about the brothers and HYE Rin, like a love triange between the 3.
Since the 1st episode (and I finished ep32) I always hoping too see some changes in LDH's character, but there is really nothing!! It is always the same.
For me it doesn't matter if she is 1st, 2nd or last lead if she only plays her part fabilous. (like Han Go Eun did in Capital Scandal as Cha Song Joo, OR much better Oh Yoon Ah did in "SOMEDAY" as Yoon Hye Young.)
Her character is just soooo unimportant (that even it was me I would go crazy). The two abrove mentioned characters even if they the 2nd lead they had the helped the damas to develop and they gave them a sense.
For my part I think LDH is really brave. I would have done it too. She was and is just like a empty shell. The drama is going down even if LDH would stay, sooo why should she go down with it, when MBC fooled her like that.

So go go girl WELL DONE ... and I hope you don't change your mind!!!

NO. the story line is about the brothers, the birth switch and the revenge. the love story is only sub plot.
her quitting like this is really unethical and selfish.

i think, next time she should just only signed love story drama contract. most of her fans also seems to only interested in the love story/love triangle. so just wait for her next love drama project.

Poor girl obviously has problems. As I see, her fans so vocal about her
mistreatment in the drama, attacking LYH may add more pressure to their star.

In EOE, DC's mom once commented that HR is too skinny like a string bean, not
pretty. I was a little surprised at the time.....Hmmmm.....now somehow these all
added up.

@ #119

I know that the storyline was about the bothers and their revenge .... but MBC did really make a use of her. Because they said that it will also be a lovetriange between them. And let me say one thing that I like and a main reason my I love kdramas is always their LOVETRIANGLE. (and surly the music) If not for it then I also could watch American dramas.
And I am not a big fan Of LDH. But put your shoes in her's. Would you like that the production would use you like that. She was really used only as a PR nothing else. If you sign a contract for something and then it doesn't happen, wouldn't you also feel betrayed. Well if the production and screenwriters changes something because for the best, that is ok but still they should respect the actress and not let her drop. But what they did to her is really impolite. And if I am not mistaken she is not the only one who is being treated unfair.

But I really love LDH!!
As I read the posted comments of other people before LDH quitted EOE!!
I really found out that she's not doing well in EOE!! and others were saying that her acting was stiff!! Perhaps because even herself doesn't like the character rendered to her!!
Now, it feels good that LDH came up for that decision(quitting in EOE!)
She deserves better!!

"and others were saying that her acting was stiff!! "

Actually . . . the first 4-5 episodes of her entrance, she actually was delivering the best performance among the leads, and Min Hye Rin was a terrifically conceived character. Student protester, unwanted heiress, teacher, etc. etc. She represented the conscience and idealism of a free, democratic South Korea, and initially she seemed mostly free of family whine and cheese.

Then, they introduced Baek-ho and her pianist hypochondriac sister. And then her character went to crap. I mean, wow. Starting with Episode 28, it looked like she was becoming important to the core story again.

"LDH will have better project coming her way…it is for her good and her fans to leave EOE as ever since she is the only character in the story who is totally out-of-synch…"

That might not be the case. Depending on the effect it has on the East of Eden (and how much of it is really due to physical ailments), this could seriously damage her TV career. MBC may blacklist her, and depending on her onset reputation, SBS and KBS may be reticent to cast her as a top lead again. At this point, it may make more sense for her to move onto a movie career.

"NO. the story line is about the brothers, the birth switch and the revenge. the love story is only sub plot."

East of Eden was promoted with the triangle in mind (and LDH/SSH as lead couple), and with Lee Dae Hae as a true lead character. And FWIW, starting with Episode 28, it looked like the story was transitioning into that.

Again, I think the core problem is simply that the producers wanted to go with an extension, and she didn't. And it's likely that this had been an ongoing fight while episode 20+ were being made. East of Eden has reportedly been a grueling shoot and a circus for everybody. Even the original writer went down twice due to the pressure from the show, and eventually had to be replaced.

Take that same situation and lets say you were in a group and everyone else made you do all the work while they slacked off. Would you quit or would you like these people take advantage of you like that? I'm not saying Lee Da hae isn't at fault here but theres always two stories to every conflict. Whatever the story was, it must of been worth risking her career.

When the project is worth millions of dollars and you're getting paid an A-list salary, you see through the project until it is completed. Doesn't matter how much you hate your job, you have to be a professional.

Now, having said that, Lee Dae Hae (like the other actors) was also asked to take two sets of paycuts. If I was unhappy with my work AND i was asked to take a paycut, which existed outside the original agreement of the contract, then that's different. Especially if I was BULLIED to take a paycut AND to work beyond the original endpoints of my contract, when I have continually voiced my issues with the employer. At that point, you could argue that the employer was also unprofessional and there are certainly valid professional reasons to quit.

whoa....

I am not watching the drama but have read that this series is popular in Korea (high ratings)...so what is contributing to the high ratings? So, what's the problem? Every cast member is still paid relatively well, the writing must be acceptable to a majority of Korean tv viewers judging from the ratings....I don't get it.. Folks here say the story does not make sense but yet it is enjoying high ratings?!?! Are they watching for eye-candy or what?

Folks here say that Lee Da Hae's role is minimal in the drama....Imagine if they gave her more screentime and a meatier role, would she be able to take the harsher schedule? OR..perhaps then she'll have the incentive to carry on.

The script is at fault too, HR can actually be very critical to the story but Writer Na is just too incompetent to do so!

Ep 35 onwards is the new writer right?

After watching Ep 36, all I can say is YJH is getting the same treatment. He is getting less screen time AND his character (DW) did not develop much and he is like one of the main characters!!

I think YJH never expects LDH to receive that kind of treatment from MBC .. since he was the one who convinced LDH to take the role...

Poor guy...

The question is Lee Da-Hae: simply tired, or irresponsible actress? Well, my answer to that is that she's an irresponsible actress. Think about how everyone reacted when they found out about her quitting. She did that out of the blue. I believe that she just risked her whole acting career for the sake of dropping out of the drama... she is showing way too much pride just because she wants a bigger role. How can she just leave when she's already gone through 36 episodes? Her actions have been selfish too, as the script will have to be written differently. She is truly changing the story of this drama. People would have accepted her more if she stayed until the very end rather than dropping out at the last minute.

@136 it's quite easy to pass on judgment, but as we all know there's more than meets the eye. Everybody is entitled to their own opinions but to say she quit because she's prideful? She quit because she wanted more screen time? Or that she is the one changing the storyline? Actually it's the other way around, I was excited when EOE was announced and followed any news I can find relating to the drama and I can tell you, MBC effed her up. It takes a lot of effort and courage to stand up and quit when knowing it is a career sucide. I applaud her for having the courage to do so, avid EOE fans who followed this from the beginning whether they like LDH or not, or like the character HR can understand why she made the decision she did. It's not to say LDH is blameless, I'm saying there's more to the story and MBC is at fault too. Besides, like someone mentioned didn't they learned their lesson already with My lady/My woman where the writers lost control of their script and sense of direction and butchered the whole drama and totally different from the original plot? But at least with that drama all the characters were connected and part of the butchered plot. MBC not the first and probably not the last effed up they'll make.

I don't think LDH is unprofessional in this situation. Apparently, all parties have come to a conclusion that she will end her character at eps 40. Good for her - she made a wise decision. As a viewer, I was getting frustrated and angry with each episode. The writers/producers had the plot going everywhere and nowhere. The writers/producers/MBC should take the blame for showing us this dud. I intend to switch over to Terrior on SBS and switch over to Boys Before Flowers next year. As for the producers, maybe they can learn a lesson from this. Why can't they finish writing and filming before they broadcast a series. The problems with most Korean series is that they start off good, but end up really crappy. One perfect example is Lover in Paris. As of today, I still cannot figure out what happened in the end.

@ginnie,

"Every cast member is still paid relatively well, the writing must be acceptable to a majority of Korean tv viewers judging from the ratings….I don’t get it.."

East of Eden has a great villain in Shin Tae Hwan. Cute dimples, great hair, and a lightness in his step, he is an absolute charming prince of evil! :D

The overall arc of the story is good, and since the actual Revenge Arc has finally kicked off, East of Eden has been humming along.

Bits here and there, you can kinda see where East of Eden might have at some point in its gestation aspired to be a new Eyes of Dawn/Sandglass. Min Hye Rin was going to be an important part of that, because she was supposed to represent all that was good and just about South Korea after its long dark era. Originally, East of Eden (like the Steinbeck novel) was supposed to be a retelling of Cain (Lee Dong Chul) and Abel (Lee Dong Wook), and LDC even remarks in the earlier episode how he was the brother in darkness. Roughly speaking, MHR was supposed to bring Lee Dong Chul back into the light, and to help save Lee Dong Wook from going mad when he learns of his truth heritage. Things like that.

Blame MBC for producing a drama with many flaws.

Look how young ran hide behind her dad at ki soon's wedding and also
sleeping while she got the news that Mike is in danger and going to be killed.!!

If you are holding the main plot , is this what you can deliver? . You have to go with your quick instinct and witty enough in a situation, if you think you want to excel. A good actress should not be told by the director how to act. This drama could not be salvage, sorry to say.

this is the 1st drama i've seen LDH in where i actually like her character, too bad she had to quit. i think she wrote that she was mentally worn out, she was confused about the character & that stressed her out cause she kept second guessing herself in how she acted. i would have liked it if the original story was played out where HyeRin messes up the relationship between the 2 brothers. the EOE story is dragging, super redundant, not much really happening, but that is what you get with a long drama 50eps. on the other hand, yeah that is pretty unprofessional, directors might 2nd guess hiring her in the future.
