The secret behind the melo queen’s tears

If you’re watching A Star’s Lover, you’ll notice that “melodrama queen” Choi Ji-woo cries A LOT in it. At least once an episode, and sometimes more. So much, in fact, that viewers have picked up on a peculiar trait of the actress’s crying scenes: The tears always start with the left eye.

A representative from Choi’s management company confirmed this particular habit, saying that nine times out of ten, she cries from the left eye first, then the right.

But she’s not the only one on the Star’s Lover set with a crying quirk: Cha Ye-ryun, who plays Eun-young, has lately also been shedding lots of tears after her character was dumped. In Cha’s case, whenever she cries, she lets trickle two streams of tears from each eye, for a total of four rivulets.

Also, the actress playing Yoo Ji-tae’s sickly sister Yuri, Shin Min-hee, is said to be so immersed in her character’s emotions that she often cries real tears during script rehearsals. Shin requires some time to recover after her scenes, so if NGs occur (outtakes), she needs time to prepare for a second go. However, ever the pro, Choi Ji-woo is ready to go immediately, in contrast to some actresses who keep the crew waiting for hours while they muster up the emotions. They don’t call Choi the Queen of Tears for nuthin’.

At first, I thought this was a silly thing to notice — but looking through all my screencaps of the show, IT’S TOTALLY TRUE. I find this hilarious.

Lee Dong-wook celebrates fan club anniversary in hanbok

Lee Dong-wook (La Dolce Vita) held his latest fanmeeting on January 30 in Tokyo to commemorate the one-year anniversary of his official Japanese fan club. He arrived wearing the traditional Korean hanbok to ring in the new (lunar) year.

After garnering fans for his roles in dramas like School and My Girl, Lee earned nicknames like “Milk Boy” (for his pale, clear complexion) and “Crown Prince.” The latter drama, which aired in 2006 and also shot his co-stars Lee Da-hae and Lee Junki to (greater) fame, was particularly instrumental in winning overseas fans and turning him into a bona fide Hallyu star. He followed that with movies Arang and Page 198 of His Book, as well as last year’s La Dolce Vita.

Lee explained that he plans on perhaps two more projects before enlisting for his army service, which will happen sometime after fall.

Lee Da-hae on vacation

Following her unhappy departure from East of Eden, actress Lee Da-hae faced some criticism, left her management company to sign with Rain’s J Tune Entertainment, and now has released photos of herself on vacation.

The photos were uploaded to her cyworld mini-homepage on the 28th and 29th, and show Lee smiling broadly and enjoying what looks like a tropical vacation with her mother. They were accompanied by the message:

“I haven’t felt such freedom and happiness in a while… is it okay for me to feel this happy? If I’m happy now, does it mean difficult days are approaching? No, they say happiness comes after hardship. I can just be happy right now.”

Story Sadder Than Sadness MV illegally leaked

Do you think Lee Bo-young is upset that her face is upside-down in BOTH photos?

With promotion heating up for the upcoming melodramatic film Story Sadder Than Sadness featuring Kwon Sang-woo, the latest dustup centers around the illegal leaking of a music video featuring a song from the soundtrack sung by Lee Seung-chul, “그런 사람 또 없습니다” (There’s nobody like that person). The video was leaked to an online portal site before it was officially ready and therefore hadn’t been through its final editing stages. A more finished version was released the following day (watch below) and the film will be in theaters on March 14.

The story seems pretty self-explanatory: Kwon Sang-woo and Lee Bo-young are in love, but for some reason she marries Lee Beom-soo instead.

I dunno; I’ve never been that excited about this movie, but doesn’t it look like just the kind of thing that would have been a hit in the mid/late ’90s? (i.e., indulgently tragic). Which is my way of saying that even if it turns out to be good, it feels pretty behind the times.

(Also, after seeing the MV, I kinda feel like I’ve already seen the movie. Right?)

Daniel Henney surprises Jung Ryeo-won with flowers

Daniel Henney made a surprise visit to friend Jung Ryeo-won to give her some flowers and well-wishes before she shot an ad for her new gig — she’s the new brand model for Biotherm cosmetics (Henney, meanwhile, has been brand model for Biotherm Homme for the past four years).

Pictures had been released last month of Henney visiting Jung while she was working on the set of her upcoming drama, in which she plays the titular Princess Ja-myung, which drew fan interest after Jung then uploaded candid photos of the twosome joking around on her mini-homepage.

According to a source, Jung was “extremely happy at his visit and proceeded to shoot her ad looking cheerful.”
