Kim So-eun earns praise for double duty

Actress Kim So-eun is currently pulling double duty with roles in two different KBS productions: On Mondays and Tuesdays, she’s the sassy best friend in the trendy drama Boys Before Flowers, and on weekends she plays the childhood counterpart to Chae Shi-ra‘s grown-up warrior leader in historical series Empress Cheon-chu.

The latter has given her the nickname “Little Chae Shi-ra,” which is pretty high praise for a rookie actress given Chae’s respected veteran status. Kim’s performances have been well-received and, following her first appearance on Empress Cheon-chu, Kim’s name shot to the top of online searches.

On an entertainment program on the 17th, Kim said, “At first it didn’t seem real. Thank you so much for supporting me… I don’t even have much experience acting, and I hardly feel like I deserve to be called ‘Little Chae Shi-ra.'” She did, however, spent months training in action school for her role, enabling her to perform her own horseback riding and falling stunts.

"I hardly feel like I deserve to be called ‘Little Chae Shi-ra.’”"

Translation: "Antis, please don't go after me!! Hey, do you know that Lee Min Ho is being called the new Kimura Takuya over at Dramabeans? Troll him instead!!"

She's doing fine, but it's roughly the equivalent of calling Kim Bum "Little Choi Min Sook" because he played a future gangster. Still, good for her and I'm looking forward to her character's budding relationship with Yi Jung.

I thought more that the scenes in Empress Chun Chu where filmed earlier (last year) already, seeing the production history notes about this show (see dramawiki).

So I'm also not sure about this "double duty".. but whatever the case is about that, she seems to be doing very well in both shows. Especially as archeress she was very cute.

Sadly Empress Chun Chu seems to 'lag' a bit in the current episodes compared to the spectacular first episodes.. too much 'plot talking', not enough action... also it misses some authenticity for providing real historical feeling. E.g. they had some story-related paintings there looking like modern comic style. Especially compared to the much 'simpler' paintings in 'Painter of the Wind' which plays in a much later epoch this feels weird. Also the wigs and wrong bears are often far too obvious. Wonder why the actors can't grow a real beard for a change (why is that a problem these days when all males in the past had such beards? Just wondering... :)

Anyway... what Empress Chun Chun really misses are dramabeans recaps. ;)

^ even if they filmed earlier, she's in two dramas on TV now so that explains the "double duty" pretty clearly to me.

"it’s roughly the equivalent of calling Kim Bum “Little Choi Min Sook” because he played a future gangster."

yeah if Kim Bum played a childhood role for choi minsoo. he didn't, so this isn't really the right comparison. i think it's early to call kim soeun the little choi shira but not that weird since she's doing a good enough job that ppl want to give her that much praise.

She's impressed me enough on BOF that I'm considering watching Empress Cheon-chu, which is not my usual genre, originally I was going to skip it.

She does look very different in the other drama.....almost like a different person. Older and more fierce.
I don't like the way the two girls are being dressed in BFF especially Jandi. She is supposed to be a teen not a tween. I hated the outfits in Ep 4 at the airport and when they get locked in. They made her look preadolescent and with her sometimes childish/childlike act it's ruining the chemistry with LMH/JP who is dressed like a very stylish teen tho' the long coat with the brass buttons at the first date was a little too much. But LMH carried it off and made it a part of his character. Can this guy do no wrong?!!! I don't mean that Jandi should be a fashion slave....but can she dress her age? Not like a toddler.
I am also concerned with Jandi's hair which looks frumpy as in priggish, prissy, prim, 1950's Mary Poppins/Julie Andrews singing in the hills. No leading lady of a manga/anime adaptation should have a bad hair frame. I want some hair with character. Please Mr Director. I also want a song desperately to bond with Jandi. A song like Penny Tai's lovely and sensitive number. I didn't understand a word but it made me like MG more than I would have.

wow. but it's not surprising that she would attract attention being in two dramas.. when i see trailers on tv for dramas i've never seen i'm always pointing on the screen thinking "I'VE SEEN HIM/HER SOMEWHERE!!!" and then subsequently (if the curiosity meter is high enough) reach for my laptop and google the drama/name/related actors.. i think it follows that psychology memory idea, where repetition helps remembering. plus, she's pretty :]

sonam: i think it's because of her age. Gu Hye Sun (spelling? :/ ) who plays Jandi, was born in 1984. meaning she is...24. so i think they're just trying really hard to make her look as young as possible. plus, it fits her because she's going for the kinda "cute" personality. her hair also falls into that look-i'm-an-adorable-little-girl category. :P

in my opinion she doesn't look like a high school student ..just a woman trying to act childish. BUT, if they made her more mature then people would probably complain that she looks too old. so be satisfied with what you have :] if you really can't stand it just listen to her speak and observe Lee Min Ho/Goo Jun Pyo's every move. puahahahahaha!

oh my gosh. i looked her up..she's so young. she's exactly 2 years older than me.

@Rachel, I doubt that every episode has been filmed. I'm pretty sure that usually with k-dramas, when a drama airs, they've filmed only a few episodes (like roughly half). As it's airing, the drama continues to et filmed (which explains why many a series starts off with amazing writing or directing and then turns into a mess of ridiculousness.)

@Rachel: the drama just started, they're still filming for the drama at this very moment. korean dramas film and broadcast simultaneously. atm i believe they're filming for the 5th episode because HJ mentioned getting the script for it.

i like this girl! she's cute and chic. the way she yelled at kim bum gave me the feeling that she'd play jandi better. sorry to all the goo hye sung fans out there, but i don't like her acting...she's over-dramatic. that's just my opinion so don't hate on me.

i normally don't compliment rookies, but she's doing a great job in bof (well, i've only watched her scene with kim bum). i'm looking forward to seeing more of her scenes coming up. keep up the good work!

i watched Chun Chu when it started to air.. i hafta give props to KSE. i saw her first on BOF and her character /acting struck me more than GHS at first. she seemed like normal acting and brings out her part. she has tons of potential too i think. her beauty is a simplistic, one. i can see her doing more in the future. and i love her chemistry with BOF star/friend Kim Bum :)

I'm really annoyed with what they've done with the Yuki character. God, couldn't the writers just leave this character alone? They just had to go and turn her into another typical k-drama chick/clone of Jandi. Yuki isn't supposed to be this tough, and she's supposed to chase after soujiro(spelling?) and not the other way around.

They gave Koo a variation of the Korean "bowl cut", which is roughly the pre-ajumma equivalent of "homely" and vaguely "asexual." (For example, Song Hye Kyo in Worlds Within.) It's also a way to establish the "funny" people in a story.

The thick, straight fringe is especially bad with Koo's face. Combined with her pale complexion, straight brows and wide eyes, it gives her face a kind of blocky, rectangular look, and it makes her look a little angry. If they part the fringe a bit and added some layers, which is how she usually has it, it would make her look a bit younger. Almost like Nodame.

yes, her hair especially her bangs need to be razored and angled.
Now that Nodame was so stylish and chic in the most wonderfully quirky way. That's real personal style for you.
