Kim Tae-hee wants recognition as a real actor

Kim Tae-hee (Fight) will be the next guest on the Park Joong-hoon Show, the new KBS talk show that recently kicked off its run with a rare interview with movie star Jang Dong-gun last month. (She, like Jang, is known to be good friends with host Park.) The program has been doing well in the ratings, probably because it has managed to score interviews with pretty high-profile entertainers like Jang and Kim, as well as Jung Woo-sung and Choi Jin-young.

Kim is generally liked for her sweet, pretty image and her smarts, but is widely known as a limited actress. On the program, which was taped on the 2nd, she acknowledged that reputation and explained her desire to move past it: “I am always given the labels of Seoul University graduate or top CF queen, but now I’d like to be valued properly as an actor.”

Personally, I don’t find Kim to be a particularly compelling actress, but I can admire that she recognizes her weaknesses, and it’s obvious that she’s been trying to stretch her acting skills in recent years. She’s built up her success more through her image than her projects, but from the way she talks in interviews, it appears she’s not content to skate by on her looks.

Kim Tae-hee’s episode of the Park Joong-hoon Show airs on January 4.

^ I don't believe that its confirmed yet. However, it would be a good opportunity for her. Her honesty is definitely admirable and I do hope to see more of her on the small screen.

Yeah, good luck then! More movies/dramas and less CF would be a good start. It's time now because she's definitely not a rookie anymore...

If it weren't for her looks, she wouldn't be where she is right now.

Does anyone know what she majored in college?? Maybe she should pursue what she's studied so hard for...whatever that be instead of trying so hard to be recognize for what she's clearly not meant for.

She will be recognized as a "real" actor when she actually takes on roles of any significance.

Maybe she needs a new agent or acting lessons? Instead of complaining, she should be working on her craft and taking risks like any other serious wannabe actor.

Kim Tae Hee (like Jeon Ji Hyun and Song Hye Kyo) didn't give herself enough time to develop as an actress. She had been doing primetime dramas for only about 2 years before she ventured into a film-only career. Sure, there's something to be said about actors/actresses hating being typecast or playing the same role again and again. But, honestly, she was probably at least 3 or 4 shows away from where her craft was at a sufficient level where she could play more ambitious stuff.

Not everybody gets to have Son Yeh Jin's career. Chasing after that dream will lead you into career nowhereland.

Nothing wrong w/ doing CFs - good way to have an income w/o having to take crappy projects (let's get real, projects w/ good writing are hard to come by, whether it's in Korea, Hollywood or elsewhere).

KTH should stick to light, romantic comedies until she develops more of a range (if she ever does).

And I wouldn't stick JJH w/ KTH and SHG.

While Ji-hyun isn't a great actress like Jeon Do-yeon, she's a pretty decent actress (who just happened to pick some crappy roles).

Why does every actor want to be recognized as a "real actor" these days anyway? Song Hye Kyo wanted the same thing when she took on her role in World's Within and look how it all ended up. Nobody considers her to be more of a "real" actor than she was in Full House.

I don't really see anything wrong with just sticking to what you are limited to, and in Kim Tae Hee's case, that's romantic comedies or any supporting roles that require her to bulge her eyes. I wouldn't mind seeing her in something like Love Story In Harvard again, I mean, _everyone_ loved LSIH, right? They could call it Love Story in Melbourne and she could stay over at my house. I've already stocked up on the Shin Cup! :D

"Nothing wrong w/ doing CFs - good way to have an income w/o having to take crappy projects (let’s get real, projects w/ good writing are hard to come by, whether it’s in Korea, Hollywood or elsewhere)."

Being a CF Queen itself isn't a big deal though. Lee Young Ae has been a CF queen for more than 10 years. However, those three names often get associated together when people talk about CF queens who are not known for their acting. Different reasons though. KTH's problem is that she jumped way, way too early. She should have continued working in dramas for another few years to develop her craft. SHK's problem is that she overreaches her grasp. She can probably do romantic comedy, but she doesn't want to do romantic comedy.

Ji-hyun's star quality is off the scales high (and she also has a rare enigmatic vibe that she uses really well.) But in terms of her acting, she's still raw.

The truth is, SHK's never really been that happy with her work. She used to resent her Autumn Tale popularity, because she felt kinda embarrassed about her lack of experience (as well as her weight.) She didn't understand her Angela character in All In and struggled to portray her character's emotions believably. She wanted to try something new with "Shining Days", but she didn't really like how her character turned out. In recent interviews, she became more open about how she regretting let her management in the past decide her roles to protect her image, rather than expand her range. Yadda yadda yadda

At this point, she seems mostly happy with her commercial (i.e. becoming more popular outside of Korea than in) standing. It's unlikely she'd take up a TV role unless either the money was amazing, or if she got work with a writer like Noh Hee Kyung. Then again, she may just continue doing both TV and film, which is what most popular actors do anyway. It seems that Kim Tae Hee has opted to do that now. It's not like you have to choose.

oh hell's bells...i wonder when all the pretty faces are going to wake up and realize their job is to just be what they are...CELEBRITIES...& that people have stopped expecting great performances from them with all of the sh*tty acting they've observed in dramas...*sigh* :(

@marcel,

I think it's natural to want your favorite actors/actresses to reach their best (or, if not, at least be more prolific.) I love Song Seung Heon; sometimes I even love his acting!

unless u are born with an acting talent, u have to be like kim myung min, who devote his whole time to the script (bringing it around everywhere at all times) and always trying to imagine the character and what he/she will do.

dearest kim tae hee, it's not that we don't take you seriously. but you have to use some of the brainpower you got from your studying into acting. learn from your brother.

but since she's so good in cf, she can take a character role such as some shopping tv host (or as a fictional cf queen! haha) so she can fit in easily and then work on it from there. then she can somewhat improve her acting and still remain as a highly paid cf queen. it's always good to start where you are good at.

good to know that she knows she's wrong somewhere, but hopefully she will grow.

There's something about her teeth that is "off" to me. Its too fake, somehow. This girl may have the beauty and the brains, but no real raw talent. She doesn't impress me much, hmph.
