"The enigmatic One where Makino feels wholy inadequate and yet completely inspired. Na Young, with her ethereal presence really played up, could convey that."

Agree. Lee Na Young would've been the perfect Shizuka with her ethereal quality. I <3 her :) Her grace and charm brings to mind an asian Audrey Hepburn. I also like the aloofness and cool intelligence about her - while Na Young is gorgeous, she doesn't come off as overly sentimental or too cute for her own good. *coughs* CJW*coughs*

As much as I like Lee Na Young, she's known as a mediocre interview. Meaning, she may not have all that much to say. :)

"Just wishful thinking but it would have been great if she had played the part of Rui’s crush or Domyoji’s sister. "

I think a younger Lee Na Young would have made a perfect Shizuka. The various dramas depict her as being a kind of Perfect Role Model, but she's actually meant to be a kind of Other. Not so much a personality but a raven-haired Athena or Catherine by which the other characters project their dreams, and by which the F4 seems inclined to be behaved. The encompassing One where Rui can seemingly realize an immaculate, unreal partnership, and yet not really at all. The enigmatic One where Makino feels wholy inadequate and yet completely inspired. Na Young, with her ethereal presence really played up, could convey that.

". (rampling was often good but pure gold after she hit her 50s. she’s up there with isabelle huppert in showing brutally honest feelings without hysterics.)"

Yeah, Charlotte Rampling is kinda in that Helen Mirren branch of complex, fully soulful, and frank sex symbols, which America does not allow to cultivate or age.

that's fantastic. Under the Sand is one of the best films of its kind, with a role and performance very rare in any film industry.

while it's common for older women to outlive their husbands, how she copes with moving on - or not - esp. in her inner life, isn't exactly hot subject with movie-goers. it is mesmerizing and insightful because we all become survivors sooner or later.

it'll be great to see lee na-young remain in the business long enough, to fight for such age-appropriate roles to play too. (rampling was often good but pure gold after she hit her 50s. she's up there with isabelle huppert in showing brutally honest feelings without hysterics.) as long as the market allows it of course...we can all be encouraged to drink more well aged wine in addition to the usual carbonated soda :D
