Open Thread #64

First open thread of the year!

I’ve never made it a habit to make new year’s resolutions (in fact, I tend to actively avoid the activity — because why court certain failure?), but I admit after such a crazy, turbulent year, there’s a definite appeal to wiping that slate clean with new goals…

Any interesting goals and/or resolutions for you?

  1. My goal for ‘09 is to be more aware of how much I am spending and on what. After the fiasco of 2008 I learned my lesson on my future finances. Thats my first goal.

Second.. and not any less then the first (there just HAS to be a second if its not first…lol…) would be to understand people better. Some are not nice but most of the population is and to focus on the good of people and to try and understand why those that aren’t nice are they way they are and not get to aggravated or spend my valuable time on them.

Third… is(more of a wish then a goal as is my fourth) I wish Obama a safe 8 years. He makes me at peace when he speaks, I trust his words…may God protect him and may he help our nation get out of the mess we are in or at least lead the way for the next generation of leaders.

Fourth…I wish greed would be taken away and we can live in peace.
There are many more…but I could write a novel and what I would LOVE to see in 2009.
Happy and Healthy New Year to all!

  2. I only have one resolution which is to travel the world more/expand my knowledge of other cultures.

After graduating from university it seems that my world has been just work, and going back to school for another certificate. So basically stress myself alot less and know more about the world I live in.

To start off, I’ve planned a trip to Hong Kong in April for 2 weeks.
Hopefully this trip is a start to many more.

Best wishes for a wonderful new year everyone!

  3. I saw an article on the BBC yesterday about how making a new year resolution, according to some study or another, encourages failure. Oof.

I’ve never made it habit either, but I’d still like to work on actually balancing my checkbook. Every time I use the debit card, I *think* about writing my spending down, but instead I just go online. NOT the best habit to get into.

  4. what really ! Cause i always make my new year resoutions and never get it complete .

  5. I never do resolutions as I tend to love breaking them. However I do hope to be super productive this year. I was doing pretty great at it last semester and I want to continue. I want to get all of my Grad school applications done and sent in. Whatever it is that’s freaking me out about doing them needs to stop!

  6. Hmmm… I think it’s not a new year’s resolutin because I don’t usually plan one. I think I just do what I have to do or want to do. I do make a list but it’s not a resolution for me to follow. It’s just something I do if I feel like it and don’t if I don’t feel like it.

=_=” But yeah, I just want to be more productive with my time.

  7. I read in the NY times that in order to keep you resolutions, you should start acting like what you want become. So at the moment I am trying to be a super productive person who doesn’t procrastinate which is kind of hilarious, because i am so far behind on this one that I don”t even know how i should be acting.

  8. Hey there,

Long time no talk! It’s smart that you didn’t set a new year’s resolution because mine was being nicer to K-pop celebrities, but I just broke that about a minute ago. I guess I can’t leave my bitchiness behind when I sit in front of the computer to write. O.o

Keep up the good work and come visit us at NYC!

  9. Personally, I’m going to try to cut down on my K-drama watching. I moved to a new place recently, so instead of putting myself in awkward places to try to make new friends, I’ve been downloading dramas. So from now on, more awkward, fewer dramas!^^

@Shay – I love that you’re trying to travel more, because I need to start fantasizing about travel less. Limited monetary funds, how I love thee!

  10. @ WINNIE – You should join a club or something…thats an easy way to meet new people. As for travelling, I havent gone since 2006 because of school and now work. The only reason I’m going this year is because my friend is teaching in Hong Kong so I know someone there…otherwise I would probably be like you and watch a drama instead. I’m sure my funds will be in the negatives once I come back.
By the way, I heard dramas there sell for 60HKD ….I think I will be in hybernation once I am back! Good luck with meeting new friends!

  11. After reading all the awesome reviews by the foursome on dramas & how most dramas are a “waste of my time”, and on what writer Noh stated in WW — no matter how beautiful the dramas we make are… they CANT´T BE BETTER than the world we are living in at this moment — thus my resolutions for this year are:
    watch less kdramas
spend more time at dramabeans blog
make effort to be around real people more
    read Bible more
& learn to write a poem a day

  12. I think I just saw another side of seoulbeats..how nice. Now where’s the other sister lol.

  13. most important goal is to be healthy and happy….. well……this is more like wishes than goal….

    my goal are…..
To study abroad & learn new things. get an awesome internship. aiming for the unrealistic 3.9 GPA. get rich. And lastly and rather optional…..to find a great person to share my year with.

anyhooo……i usually only accomplish about 3out of 10 things I set out to do. bu that doesn’t stop me from making goals and try to achieve them

  14. my new years resoltions are to either raise my grades or stop being the type of person who freaks out over a B+. i can’t decide which is more realistic…

  15. Love that Wilco album. “Vie en Chicago” is one of my favorite moonlight driving tunes.

“Drunk hipsters, can there be anything more annoying?”

Nope. Next time y’all see a hipster dancing “ironically” (i.e. a MIA fan), tell them that Belleza’s tests came back positive. Pitchfork, responsible for the death of culture since 1998!

2009 is going to be a tough year for many of us. I wish everybody luck,. love, and better living. Those of you still in school, I wish you do your best. Those of you in the work force, let’s survive this year together. And to all the Lee Dae Hae and Lee Yeon Hee fans, can’t we all just get along? ;)

Finally . . . thank you Sarah for your blog. The funniest, best written, sanest, etc. etc. You’re sanity in a mad, mad world, hun. :)

And when you and Rocket get married, send an invitation, mm kay? ;)

  16. This year my resolutions are to sleep earlier! I know I’m a uni student and they tend to be up at all hours but I’m going to try to be in bed before 12pm at least… Lol at my lame resolution….

I’m also starting a one drama at a time rule… I don’t think I can keep up with my 2-or-3-dramas-at-one-time lifestyle on top of balancing my studies… My poor grades last term are proof of that.. *sigh*

Lastly, I will try to avoid pointless arguments with some people. The only thing I can do is to be painfully polite with unmanageable people and keep my cool at all times…

Oh yeah, and Happy New Year Dramabeans!

  17. I too have never made New Year’s resolutions – not because of fear of failure but rather, who needs more stress, especially at the start of a fresh year? (LOL) But I applaud those who do and always appreciated the significance behind such resolutions – renewed optimism, result of reflection on year past, etc.

(But vrosemarie, in bed by 12PM??? I know, I know, it’s a typo… but funny!)

    Good luck to all!

  18. wow, it seems like everyone has the right idea for 2009…from travel to smart finances to meeting new people…getting good grades & jobs…not to mention less kdrama watching…i’ll be on the bandwagon with you all…

& my special new year’s resos are to take my vitamins every day & eat right so i don’t get sick twice a month…listen to more good music instead of the soulless crap they mostly play on the radio here in LA…string my guitar & practice more diligently along with piano & singing…look at & create more art instead of just scribbling drawings of random things in my notebook…wander around & take photos of interesting people and places…& the list could go on…which shows how much stuff i’ve been leaving to the dust bunnies in 2008…

good luck to everyone & God bless!

  19. Definitely to travel more..i just came back from Korea and amazed at the beauty of the country..also, i want to live a healthy meaningful life..that goes to all my loved ones too. Everybody wants to do good things and i hope we will see less sufferings and more happy children..peace all..!

  20. hello to all… hope my 2009 goal will not be too late… i will try to SLEEP more… i heard that skin degeneration starts at 9PM…how will i beat that? bummer! and when does skin degeneration starts if you work on shifts?

one more thing… i’ve been meaning to thank you since the day I discovered your website way back when you recapped coffee prince. I read your blogs every single day since then. BIG THANKS! I really appreciate it!
