Open Thread #68

Hey folks, apparently I am nominated for a “Golden Klog” award (that’s for Korean blog) over at Korea Sparkle in the “Best Blog About Korean Pop Culture” category. (I had no idea there were so many Korea-related blogs out there; it’s kind of funny that the only ones I’ve really heard of are all smooshed in the same category — the pop culture one, that is.) So go stuff some ballot boxes vote!
Also, I have a very, very serious question to ask you:
What is your favorite Korean ramyun (ramen) brand? I have faithfully cleaved to two brands for the entirety of my life, yet now they have both failed me. They must’ve changed the formulas on the Neoguri and Shin brands recently (particularly Shin), and this makes me SO SAD. I don’t know what’s different, but that lovely feeling of satisfaction has gone and now I’m all adrift in the ramyun aisle, and it is a very lost, aimless feeling. Life without a reliable go-to ramyun brand just feels wrong.

You got my support Dramabeans. Why are "Popseoul" and "seoulbeats" even on the list of nominations? They're terrible.

Ooo ramen brands... I'm no ramen expert and don't eat it often, but I do like the 감자라면; I like the 감자 noodles. But that one isn't one of those really spicy ramen, if that's what you like.

whenever you go to the ramen aisle you can get the individually sold ones and try them until you find one that you actually like, because everyone's taste is different.

i concur with the neoguri...its just spicy now, before it had a complex flavor (yes, instant noodle can have complexity).

personally, i really like indomie mi goreng. yeah, it's not korean but it's delicious and spicy. never been a fan of the broths that go along with most instant noodles and i like this because it doesn't have a broth, just spicy sauce.

second to the samyang ramen. did you know it was the first ramen introduced to the south korean market? it has a legacy. my parents grew up eating it, and it hasn't changed in taste. also, no msg. =D

I used to only eat shin ramyun too but a few months back when my bf was going on ramyun rampage (buying many diffrent brands on the aisle to try them out), i found myself hooked on TEUMSAE. The spicy ones though coz i think they have a non spicy flavor too. And after going their website http://teumsae.com , it seems that they are a ramen chain restaurant (or noodlebar as they call it) and so i guess this ramyun is made as the instant alternative to the one they serve at that noodlebar.

I second (or is it fourth, or fifth?) Samyang. My mother only buys that one. I've also tried the non-fried ramyun...I think it's just called "ahn tweegeen ramyun" or something, actually!
Bon appetit!

I absolutely love Samyang! Used to be a Shin Ramyun fan, but it gets too spicy sometimes that you can't really taste the flavor anymore. Samyang's just about right and its noodle is the best! Luuuuv it :)

Still a Shin Ramyun fan, but I do tend to like it spicy. But Samyang has no MSG? might have to give that a try next time...
And congrats, Dramabeans! I'll vote for you.

I love Shin ramyun. I heard that the spice packet from China is not as good as that from the U.S. so I always try to get the ones packaged in California. I would like to compare it with those made in Korea, but I haven't found any so far.
My second favourite is Ottogi jjajang ramyun. While not as good as a the real thing, it will do in a pinch.
Thanks for the tip on samyang. I will pick up a package next time I'm at the korean market.

I'm not gonna lie, and no offense, but when I read "serious question" and then "ramen" a second later, I laughed. I wish I could help, but I eat japanese instant noodles, not so much the korean ones.

Jin ramyun is the best!!! No MSG, and it comes in mild or spicy. Used to only eat Shin ramyun, but everyone's right, all you can taste is spicy now!

second the soo ta myun (수타면), though it's been a while since i've eaten it. i remember it tasting a little different from other ramens, though i also remember neoguri also being like that so i may be confused.
samyang's good, too, but has a generic ramen taste--the reason i like it is because i don't like the chinese mushrooms in shin ramen, which is precisely the reason my mom likes (or liked, if it has changed) shin.
the ottogi jajangmyun mentioned before is simple and good enough, too (and seems less fattening because of the smaller portion size than ordering from a restaurant).

I have a question, why Korean people eat their noodle out of the pot instead of put in the bowl, just curious, it is kind odd for me. as a manner it does not look good, but whose care as long it taste good.
my mom will throw a fit if I eat out of the pot, instead of pour to the big bowl.
I am not crazy about the the ramen noodle, but i do not trust the one made in China.

AnnieBannie, I eat my ramyun out of the pot purely because it's convenient and it seems weird to transfer it to another eating vessel when I've already got one. But it's probably also because Korea has a communal eating culture, where dishes are commonly shared by all. (If you go to restaurants or eat in formal situations, you'll get your own bowl of course, but the one-pot thing is a home-style way of eating.)
Thanks for all the suggestions! Keep 'em coming. For jajangmyun, personally I like Chacharoni, although nothing beats the real stuff. I can't really eat instant jjampong though.

have you tried chapagetti. it's like jjajangmyun, but a little different, and is really fast and easy to make. really yummy in the tummy. :)
for the neoguri, i havent noticed any difference, but then again, i just started eating it again. but here's a suggestion: try putting in like 3/4 of the spice packet (they seem to have gone overboard with the spicyness lately) and also try putting dduk (the ones you use for dduk gook) into it like ddukboki.

congratz on your nomination... i thought yours is the best one of the category, because your blog is not biased (well if yours a little biased toward a person or two, it's fine because i'm biased to those people also :) ) like some others...
the store in my city used to sell the Shin brand one, so i only had a chance to taste that one, and i thought it's not that bad, because i only eat them for like a year, so i don't know what the difference (sorry, i can't be any help at all)...
but thanks for all the tip for other ramyun though, if i had the chance i will definitely try them out

What's funny about those award nominations is that it makes it seem like all those other blogs are the loudest voices in the "korean blogosphere" when it's really the entertainment blogs that are the heavyweights, in terms of web presence. A lot of those other blogs are angry expats in Seoul who complain a lot about Korea and look down on the entertainment blogs, which is why I stopped reading them.

Dramabeans kudos on your nomination! I must confess, I have never had Korean ramen, but thanks you to and all of the wonderful comments, I now have plenty of options to try! I still cannot pass Bulgogi...I mean I literally go to the stand in D.C. like every day! And I am sure if ramen is the same, then well...I am just going to have to flip a coin or something...
