A Movie Is A (writer’s) Movie

Kang Ji-hwan and So Ji-sub

Kang Ji-hwan and So Ji-sub‘s action movie A Movie Is A Movie (or Rough Cut, 영화는 영화다) has been named by film critics and arts reviewers as the top film of the past year.

This comes out of the 2009 list of “Writer-Selected Films of Today,” chosen by a group of 100 arts writers and movie critics who came up with a list of 22 recommendations. Fourteen of the films are Korean, while eight are foreign. A Movie Is A Movie, by director Jang Hoon, was named top pick.

See the full list of films below the cut.

Of the Korean picks, also named were:

  • Speed Scandal [과속스캔들], dir. Kang Hyung-chul, starring Cha Tae-hyun, Park Bo-young;
  • You’re Far Away [님은 먼곳에], dir. Lee Joon-ik, starring Su Ae, Uhm Tae-woong;
  • My Dear Enemy [멋진하루], dir. Lee Yoon-ki, starring Jeon Do-yeon, Ha Jung-woo;
  • Night and Day [밤과 낮], dir. Hong Sang-soo, starring Kim Young-ho, Park Eun-hye;
  • Shocking Family [쇼킹 패밀리], dir. Kyung Soon, starring Kyung Soon, Kyung Eun
  • Sleeping Beauty [슬리핑 뷰티], dir. Lee Han-na, starring Im Ah-young;
  • Frozen Flower [쌍화점], dir. Yoo Ha, starring Jo In-sung, Joo Jin-mo;
  • Forever the Moment [우리 생애 최고의 순간], dir. Im Soon-rye, starring Kim Jung-eun, Moon Sori
  • We’re Action Stars [우린 액션배우다], dir. Jung Byung-kil, starring Kwon Kwi-deok, Kwak Jin-seok;
  • Iri [이리] and Joong-kyung [중경], dir. Jang Ryul;
  • The Good, The Bad, The Weird [좋은놈 나쁜놈 이상한놈], dir. Kim Ji-woon, starring Lee Byung-heon, Song Kang-ho, Jung Woo-sung;
  • The Chaser, dir. Na Hong-jin, starring Kim Yoon-seok, Ha Jung-woo;

(Although, if you want to get technical, some of these aren’t from the past year. Heck, some were even from 2007. As this is the fourth year this survey/list has been compiled, how do they explain passing over the films last year and nominating them now? *head-scratcher*)

As for non-Korean films:

  • No Country for Old Men, dirs. Joel & Ethan Coen;
  • 4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days, dir. Cristian Mungiu (Romania);
  • Departures, dir. Yojiro Takita (Japan);
  • Dark Knight, dir. Christopher Nolan;
  • Let the Right One In, dir. Tomas Alfredson (Sweden);
  • Waltz with Bashir, dir. Ari Folman (Israel);
  • Eastern Promises, dir. David Cronenberg (Canada);
  • It’s a Free World, dir. Ken Loach (U.K.)

As the number 1 selection, A Movie Is A Movie director Jang Hoon will receive his award on the 27th.

"You’re Far Away [님은 먼곳에], dir. Lee Joon-ik, starring Su Ae, Uhm Tae-woong"

Wow, this list is pure lulz, as long as this turd of a film is considered at all.
Worst movie I saw from 2008, Lee Joon Ik, be a dear and give me those 2 hours of my life back.

OMG. I melted when I saw that top pic. Sexy.

As for the movie, I'm not really into Korean movies but I did force myself to watch a little bit of this one for...obvious reasons. The quality of the video on youtube was so crappy, plus k-films always confuse me, so I didn't feel like continuing. I guess I should probably finish it someday though. I've heard too many good things about it.

I'm sad to say that I have not seen any of those Korean films, but 'Let the Right One In' was a great movie. Of course Heath's performance in Dark Knight was also awesone. Of the Korean movies listed, I am most interested in "The Good, the Bad, the Weird." Has anyone see it?

The Chaser is the only Korean film I've seen on that list, but I see why it was on there. Now I really want to see the rest of them.

Rough Cut was a good movie, with brilliant performances by both SJS and KJH. Can't say it's my best or fav movie, but you can't deny that the concept of the story's really fresh. Both of them brought out the best in each other, so it's not strange that they're both highly likely to get the Best Newcomer Award in Baek Sang..

But with 2 hotties, how can you NOT WATCH this? hehehe.

Hmm... I just watched this a few days ago, and as much as I enjoyed it (and loved the acting) I wouldn't say it was the best film of the year... it does make me want to check out some of those other Korean picks though.

were these rated by writers from around the globe or is this just picks of korean writers?

anyways, i think chaser should be higher up on that list. that was an awesome movie!

No wonder at all. So Ji Sub is and KJH is in it. Both extremely talented.

@ripgal: I think only KJH won best newcomer whereas So Ji Sup won best actor.

You Are Far Away, My Dear Enemy and The Chaser of course is among the great movie but The Host is phenomenal only it's not on 2007.

I really enjoyed Rough Cut - I think it's one of So Ji Sub's best projects ever. But I wouldn't say it was the top film of the year. It was literally a little "rough" in places, which is understandable, as it's a debut work from a new director working on a low budget. I would say that My Dear Enemy was a better film.

Oh, and "We're Action Stars" was an absolute delight! I laughed so hard watching it, and also teared up a little bit. Man, I want to rewatch it...

WHEN are we going to stop hearing about "Forever the Moment"?? It was a fairly good film, yeah, but far from being a masterpiece. And it wasn't even a 2008 film! O_o;

Same. It wasn't at all what I was expecting, (though I'm not sure what I was expecting), but it was kinda perfect. It really put the whole movie into perspective.

Not that surprised Rough Cut won. It did well at various smaller award shows, and I'm sure many of the critics are using the film to make a point about popular actors taking less money to do both more challenging work and turn a profit, especially in the current state of their film industry and economy.

"and where is my SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE? that movie was phenomenal."

Oh I'm sure it'll show up in next year's list. I mean, HELLO No Country for Old Men? :D (No Country > all films on that list, except for Waltzing)

"WHEN are we going to stop hearing about “Forever the Moment”?? It was a fairly good film, yeah, but far from being a masterpiece. And it wasn’t even a 2008 film!"

Wasn't Forever the Moment released at the beginning of 2008?

Yeah, in January.

Actually all of the Korean films on that list had their theatrical runs in 2008, according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki?title=South_Korean_films_of_2008

I really want to watch Speed Scandal but can't seem to get my hands on it anywhere. I started watching My Dear Enemy, but the pacing was so incredibly slow and numbing that I had to stop. Maybe it gets better gradually somewhere? Although I would love to watch the other Korean films on the list, I'm afraid to because I might get extremely disappointed.

I love Ken Loach films. I had to watch The Wind That Shakes The Barley, because a) it was a Ken Loach film and b) Cillian Murphy was in it. Thanks for the list. Now I really want to see Departures and Waltz With Bashir!
