Boys Before Flowers: Episode 22

You can tell we’re in the home stretch of the series because today gave us several flashback montages summarizing storylines from the course of this drama, as though to say, “Remember this? Look how far we’ve come.”

I’ll admit my Boys Before Flowers fatigue kicked in about eight episodes ago — that’s when it started being more fun writing about the drama than actually watching, and let’s face it, it’s always more fun the other way around (the balance did swing back in the other direction in the past couple episodes, so yay!). The flashback montages brought back some nostalgia, and made me feel the tiniest twinge of sadness to be saying goodbye to this drama soon, craziness and all.

SONG OF THE DAY

T-Max – “나쁜 마음을 먹게해” (ballad version), from the Special Edition additional OST and featuring Kim Joon on the narration. The title can be translated “Thinking Wrong Thoughts,” but the full connotation is something like, “I keep thinking, against my better judgment, these feelings that I know are wrong.”

EPISODE 22 RECAP

Jun-pyo pleads for Jan-di to tell him not to get married. She doesn’t respond and is called away by an usher saying Jae-kyung is asking for Jan-di, so she leaves without a word. However, from her expression — upset, frustrated — we can see she’s not going to beg Jun-pyo to call the wedding off. He registers this too, to his disappointment.

Jan-di’s (non)response here confuses me a little. I understand her conflict and why she feels she can’t ask him to give up everything for her — but what I don’t get is why she looks pissed, as though she’s mad that he asked. (In my mind, she should have played this scene as being torn and anguished, and instead it comes off vaguely bitchy.)

F3 share Jun-pyo’s letdown — from their chagrin here and the way they were willing to let him break his own arm, it’s obvious they hoped Jan-di could put a stop to this. Meanwhile, the guests wait outside, growing fidgety the longer they are kept waiting, while Jae-kyung sits in her bridal chamber nervously.

Jan-di is led away by the attendant to meet Jae-kyung, but finds herself kidnapped instead — she’s grabbed by one guy and shoved into an elevator with several more. Mama Kang then sends Jun-pyo — still wrestling with his dilemma in the waiting room — a text message with a simple warning: a photo of Jan-di being restrained is accompanied by the words, “The groom is taking too long.” Her implication is clear: If Jun-pyo doesn’t go through with the wedding, Jan-di will come to some kind of harm.

Therefore, she smiles smugly when the groomsmen enter the chapel, followed by (a very tense) Jun-pyo. Next comes the bride, who takes her place by Jun-pyo at the altar.

The minister begins the ceremony, breezing through the opening. When he gets to the part where he asks for any objectors to speak now or forever hold their peace, he isn’t expecting a response and is therefore startled when Jae-kyung raises a hand to get his attention.

The parents are stunned; her father tries to hiss out a warning to her, but Jae-kyung says that she has an objection. She looks around and guesses that there must be others who also have objections, at which point Ji-hoo stands up, followed immediately by Yi-jung, Woo-bin, and Ga-eul.

Jae-kyung: “I cannot marry Gu Jun-pyo. No matter how I look at it, I don’t think I’m suited for marriage right now. I’m sorry to cause so much trouble with my fickleness. Dad, everything is my fault, so please carry on your business with Shinhwa Group. President Kang and Gu Jun-pyo, I’m truly sorry. Please forgive me.”

Tamping down her anger, Madam Kang walks out, followed by the rest of the guests. Confused, Jun-pyo asks Jae-kyung what she’s doing, which she answers with a simple explanation: “I’ve always been a pretty cool person.” Jae-kyung calls her bodyguard Chen to check in on Jan-di, who has been liberated from her kidnappers and is taken to a yacht.

Freed from his obligation, Jun-pyo dashes out of the chapel to the yacht, where he finds a surprised Jan-di waiting alone.

He grabs her in a relieved hug, and I can’t help thinking she doesn’t deserve this, seeing as how she put up no fight and hasn’t really earned his devotion. Still, the key to enjoying what follows is to accept their happy reunion, so I’m doing my best to let this point go.

The yacht sets sail, and from a distance (her hotel room, perhaps), Jun-hee watches, pleased at this turnout.

Yi-jung drives Ga-eul out to the shoreline, amused at her uncontrollable sobbing — Ga-eul has been overwhelmed with emotion at Jae-kyung’s lovely gesture.

After she stops crying, Yi-jung broaches the topic she’d brought up the day before, about how he’d failed to meet Eun-jae three years ago. He tells her, by way of explanation, “I don’t believe in happy endings.”

This spins us into a flashback: Three years ago, he had walked into his studio, flirting with a couple girls, and found Eun-jae waiting. Much like Ga-eul had reacted in a similar scenario (and the similarity must be intentional), Eun-jae had been flustered, accidentally breaking a pot and cutting her finger in her haste to leave.

Yi-jung had chased her outside and asked what she had to say. She’d said, “I have a favor to ask” — but we don’t get to see the rest of this scene so we’ll have to wait to find out.

Meanwhile, more continuity fail (or extravagant waste of resources win?) as Ji-hoo takes out his white horse for a ride — did he ship Rui over to Jeju along with the cars? Ji-hoo thinks back to punching Jun-pyo the night before, and we now see the tail end of that conversation, after Jun-pyo admitted that he couldn’t let Jan-di go:

Jun-pyo: “I’d thought that it might be better to send her to you rather than stay with her when I make things so difficult for her. I didn’t even want to imagine it, but if I had to, I thought the other person must be you, that you were the only one it could be. But still, I can’t do it.”

He returns from his ride to see Jae-kyung waiting to talk to him. Asked whether she regrets letting Jun-pyo go, Jae-kyung answers with her usual cheerfulness, “The moment I let him go, I’ve been regretting it to death.”

Ruefully, she tells him, “I was rooting for you, but I’d hate to have given up for nothing, so I can’t do that anymore.” She mentions how she’d asked Jun-pyo whether he would choose friendship or love, and he had answered that he wouldn’t give up either. Ji-hoo smiles a bit at that, because it’s a reminder that Jun-pyo is still committed to being his friend.

Jae-kyung says philosophically that there’s a saying that people generally get as much as they strive for. She and Ji-hoo didn’t get their way because they weren’t ambitious enough — they didn’t exert their wills and backed off. (By the way, it’s not a negative or positive thing to be ambitious in this sense — it just means that Jan-di and Jun-pyo’s True Wuv trumped the other factors.)

Jae-kyung is leaving for New York tomorrow, so she asks him to deliver something to Jan-di — the star-moon necklace. Jae-kyung muses, “You don’t know how much I’d hoped that the JJ stood for Ji-hoo and Jan-di.”

She wishes him luck, and leaves.

Jan-di and Jun-pyo arrive at a villa, which has been lavishly decked out in a romantic display — candles, fancy food, rose petals arranged in a heart configuration. (I believe Jae-kyung has handled the arrangements.) Their initial reaction is to sneak looks at each other uncomfortably, as though embarrassed with the overt romanticism.

But never fear, they get over that soon enough. They sit down to eat, flashing happy smiles at each other every other moment. It’s adorable. Jun-pyo rises to pull Jan-di to her feet for a dance, and Jan-di asks the question I’ve been wondering:

Jan-di: “I’ve been wanting to ask you something… Why me? I’m not pretty, and I don’t have money, a distinguished name, or anything. Why did you like me?”
Jun-pyo: “Because I have all that.”
Jan-di: “What?”
Jun-pyo: “Money, name, looks — I have all that. I don’t need that from you. All you have to be is Geum Jan-di.”

As Jan-di looks through a telescope at the stars, Jun-pyo points out Sirius, known as Orion’s dog (part of the Canis Major constellation) and the brightest star in the night sky. He jokes that it’s like him in that respect, so Jan-di laughs and claims a star for her own. Jun-pyo identifies it as Procyon, the brightest star in Canis Minor.

Jan-di asks how he came to like astronomy, at which he suddenly grows quieter. When he had been younger, his father had sent him a telescope with a card telling him to study the stars, so that they could watch them together later.

Jan-di guesses that his interest stemmed from father-son star-watching dates, but he says no — they never went. Believing that promise, Young Jun-pyo had studied his hardest.

Jun-pyo: “But do you know what I got for Christmas a few years later? A telescope. That’s when I realized that he didn’t send his gifts and cards, but that his secretary did.”

Jan-di senses his hurt, her smile fading in sympathy. But when he asks, “Do you know what my dream is?” she manages to answer lightly: “Going to watch the stars with your son.”

Jun-pyo laughs, “You’re so simple-minded,” before he says solemnly, “To not make promises I won’t keep. Jan-di. I’m sorry for hurting you.” And then, “I love you.”

You know, all the lovey-doveyness is pretty much expected stuff, but the whole thing really brings a smile to my face. I’m just so glad to see everyone looking happy for once (even if the actors, poor things, look visibly exhausted).

This giddy vibe continues the next day, when our happy couple relaxes together. They’re visited by their friends, who are likewise relieved to see that all is well in the land of Jun-di love.

Ji-hoo is glad that Jan-di is once again able to laugh, and tells her so. He also hands over her the lost star-moon necklace, and although it’s crossed his mind that it’s suspicious that Jae-kyung had it all this time, that’s all moot now.

Instead, Jan-di is alarmed that Jae-kyung is about to depart any minute now and rushes off for the airport. Although Jae-kyung more or less steamrollered Jan-di into their friendship, Jan-di has developed an affection for her, and a part of her feels guilty for taking away the man Jae-kyung loved.

They make it just in time to catch Jae-kyung before she boards — who, by the way, is looking around with a heavy heart, as though half-hoping that they would come to see her off even though she purposely didn’t tell them she was leaving.

Jan-di scolds her for trying to go without saying goodbye, and Jae-kyung admits that she doesn’t handle them very well. With some affection, Jun-pyo tells Jae-kyung to take care, and thanks her.

Jae-kyung:”If you two break up, I’m going to feel so wronged I’ll die. So if you want to split up, you have to report to me and get my approval.”

The two ladies hug, Jan-di openly crying and Jae-kyung holding her tears back. She rushes off before she succumbs to tears, and boards the plane.

Once seated, Jae-kyung takes out the shoes she’d found in the Macau airport, which remind her (flashback montage!) of her first encounter with Jun-pyo. She thinks wistfully, “I know this was originally Jan-di’s. But let me have just this one thing. I should have a memory to cherish for myself, shouldn’t I?”

And then, everyone’s back home.

As punishment for the broken engagement, Madam Kang has ordered her men to keep Jun-pyo confined to his room, where he sees the news reports speculating on the uncertain future of Shinhwa’s merger with JK Group.

As for Jan-di, she’s once again homeless, knowing that she’d better get out of Gu Manor ASAP, before Madam Kang acts. Once again, Witch Mom beats Jan-di to the punch, arriving at the restaurant to deliver Jan-di’s luggage.

She is in a high temper, and accuses Jan-di of being even more sneaky than she’d given her credit for, acting innocent and then pulling off a sly move behind everyone’s back. Even for Madam Kang, the accusations are pretty strong, but we see why: she shows Jan-di a newspaper announcing that the merger, like the engagement, is off.

Mama Kang’s voice drips vitriol as she tells Jan-di that she doesn’t realize just how much damage she’s done, or on what scale. She threatens, “It’s best you not expect me to let this go easily. I will make you realize exactly who you messed with, and make sure you regret it to its fullest.”

This scene is interrupted by Grandpa Yoon, who rebukes Madam Kang for going too far. Although I doubt she feels sorry for her actions, Dr. Yoon’s presence has a chastening effect, and Mama Kang bows her head out of respect for him.

And then, her temper is mollified entirely when Dr. Yoon announces that Jan-di’s business is his business because “she’s my grandson’s wife-to-be.” This is news to everyone, including Jan-di, but most of all Madam Kang. Ever the shrewd woman, she contains her surprise, quickly guessing that she need not interfere if Dr. Yoon’s words are true. Perhaps this is one battle she can win without even trying.

Grandpa Yoon brings Jan-di home with him, turning the tables this time by pressuring her into staying. She and Ji-hoo both feel the awkwardness of the setup, but are overridden by Grandpa’s insistence that Jan-di remain with them.

However! I do like this next turn, because Grandpa Yoon sits down with Ji-hoo to explain that Jan-di has nowhere to turn, and he wants to help her. Ji-hoo is about to explain that Jan-di might be uncomfortable here, but Grandpa pre-empts his argument. He says that Jan-di’s presence doesn’t have to mean anything. In fact, he’s opposed to Jan-di and Ji-hoo being together (I don’t think it’s a classist statement, but more that he thinks they’re not suitable together).

Ji-hoo is startled, but smiles to himself — well, that potential problem worked itself out nicely.

Now we see the rest of Yi-jung’s flashback explanation of why he never met up with Eun-jae. She’d handed him a letter and asked him to meet her the next morning, leaving with a hopeful smile.

Yi-jung had walked back inside and put the letter on the counter to read later, but a phone call from his distraught mother had distracted him. He’d grown annoyed at her familiar histrionics and urged her to give up on his father, and when he ended the call and turned to serving his guests tea, his irritation caused him to spill tea on the counter. He’d tossed the papers that had gotten soaked, accidentally including Eun-jae’s unopened letter with the pile.

Mr. Jung approaches Jan-di with a puzzling request, which Jan-di accepts sympathetically, happy to oblige. This is a favor he asks of her personally, which has nothing to do with Madam Kang or Jun-pyo — he’d like her to act as companion for a man in a coma. He’ll pay her for her sitting with the man and talking to him occasionally, as a part-time job.

The man is described merely as someone “like family” to him. Jan-di is unsure why he’d ask this of her, but Mr. Jung explains that what the man needs is a warm spirit, and she’s the warmest person he knows.

Jun-pyo hears from Mr. Jung that Jan-di’s staying with Ji-hoo, and while that’s not an ideal resolution, he understands that it’s the safest place for her at the moment. He texts Ji-hoo (on Mr. Jung’s phone, since his has been confiscated): “I’m relieved that she’s staying at your house.”

Ji-hoo, however, can’t shake an ominous feeling. After reading the message, Ji-hoo wonders aloud in his empty house, “Jun-pyo, then why am I feeling so uneasy? I feel afraid.”

As Jun-pyo is currently under house arrest, he’s cut off from the outside world, and namely Jan-di. Woo-bin runs into her at school, and sighs over the rough patch they’re all going through right now — Yi-jung is still unable to use his right arm, and Jun-pyo’s locked up. Perhaps he’s even referencing the actors’ real-life haggard expressions, because he points to himself and says his face is suffering from all the worry.

Still, Woo-bin assures Jan-di not to worry too much about Jun-pyo. He tells her to hang in there, and also thanks her for helping Ji-hoo: “I’ve never seen him looking as relaxed as he has these days. Thanks to you, he found his grandfather.”

Jan-di approaches her new companion position with enthusiasm, caring for the unconscious man and reading aloud to him. One particular passage strikes a chord in her:

Jan-di: “The most unfortunate encounters are like those with fish bones. The longer the encounter, the more the fishy smell sticks with you. The encounters to be most careful with are with an open bloom, because while it’s open it brings cheers of joy, but as it wilts, it gets thrown away. The most beautiful encounters are like those with handkerchiefs. They wipe away your sweat when you are tired, and your tears when you are sad.”

That last example makes her think of Ji-hoo (flashback montage!), who’d always been there for her in her times of need, whether to lend her support or wipe away her tears. Jan-di smiles at her patient, saying she hopes to be a handkerchief type of person for him, too — and Mr. Jung watches from the doorway, pleased.

This scene is a bit random, but at this point I’m just rollin’ with it. Jan-di struggles to cut her bangs satisfactorily, which is when Ji-hoo walks by and offers his assistance. Naturally he is a master of this skill — ain’t nothing he can’t do, is there? — and he finishes the job successfully.

Jan-di returns the favor by volunteering to help wash his car (which, of course, eventually degenerates into a water fight).

Afterwards, they sit outside and relax, while Ji-hoo reads from a book of poetry. One poem catches his attention, and he starts to read aloud: “I wanted to tell you…”

He pauses there, hesitating for a long moment, trying to decide whether to continue. Finally he decides to go for it, and keeps reading: “…that I love you. I wanted to shout it aloud. That’s all.”

But when he looks over to see Jan-di’s reaction, he sighs because she’s fallen asleep and therefore hasn’t registered his indirect confession.

Meanwhile, Ga-eul is busy with a new project, spurred by her last encounter with Yi-jung. It looks like his cast is off, but for whatever reason, he hasn’t regained the use of his arm. (I’m guessing that it’s a case of paralysis stemming from a psychological block, rather than a medical reason.)

He’s packing away his pottery items; she thinks it’s cowardly of him to quit so easily. He says in a dull monotone, “It doesn’t matter anymore.” She fires back, “It matters to me!” Ga-eul recites his own words back to him, harking back to his analogy likening a person’s heart to the clay-firing process. The clay, like people’s life experiences, is supposed to be strengthened by the fire.

He dismisses it, saying, “I must’ve been talking crap.” Ga-eul isn’t willing to give up on him, though, and announces her intention to return to him the use of his paralyzed hand. In pursuit of that goal — like I said, it must have a psychological basis — over the next several nights, Ga-eul spends all her time going from building (apartment?) to building, working to the point of exhaustion.

Woo-bin and Jun-pyo put their heads (and fists) together to devise a plan to slip away from his bodyguards. Jun-pyo heads out, feigning a careless attitude when he tells the bodyguards he doesn’t care if they follow him — he’s just going to be hanging out with Woo-bin.

Of course they follow, trailing Woo-bin’s car on the road. They don’t count on Woo-bin’s mafia underlings cutting in out of nowhere, however, and find it impossible to continue their pursuit.

And so, Jun-pyo earns an afternoon of freedom, and calls Jan-di out for a date. Unfortunately, she’s just assured a mother at the clinic that she’ll watch her young boy for the afternoon, and finds herself in a bind.

Her compromise: she brings the boy along on the date. Jun-pyo is surprised (“What is that thing?”) and disgruntled that their precious time together is going to be usurped by this kid, and it’s adorable to see him try to deal with being left out. He pushes the boy aside a few times, wriggling his way between Jan-di and the kid to claim her attention (which is all done in fun).

Eventually, he warms up to the boy as they spend the afternoon at the zoo.

COMMENTS

First of all, it’s worth pointing out that the scenery in recent episodes has been really beautiful. Perhaps this is one marked benefit of making a drama with unknown actors (or little-knowns) — you save money on acting fees to spend on location shoots, like in Macau, New Caledonia, and Jeju Island.

Often, a drama will boast of its foreign location shoots, but I find that many times those segments are pretty unremarkable — they seem either superfluous (and have no impact on the story), or the locations don’t look that different and are therefore wasted. Not so here, where the location shoots add to the rich, luxury-world feel of these characters’ worlds. (There’s nothing more laughable than seeing a drama depict mega-rich characters when everything actually looks quite shabby, right?)

I don’t have huge complaints with Jae-kyung’s exit from the drama, if only because I’m so glad she’s gone! I should be satisfied with that and not look the gift horse in the mouth, so to speak.

But maybe I’ll peek a little, because I do have one main issue in this episode, and it’s the way Jae-kyung shoulders the responsibility for Jan-di and Jun-pyo’s continued romance. Let me make clear that I totally get that in the manga, Shigeru is the one who stops the wedding to spare Doumyouji the consequences of backing out himself. However, here the lead-up has been different, and therefore the way this unfolds puts a different spin on events, and it’s one I don’t like.

Without making further comparisons to Hana Yori Dango, I think it’s problematic (or just frustrating) that Jae-kyung’s actions are the reason Jun-di get back together. Jan-di had her chance to tell Jun-pyo not to get married — the least provocation would have been enough to get him back — but she didn’t. Yes, she was kidnapped so who knows if she would have acted eventually, but I’m putting my money on no. She would have sat back and let her Grand Love marry someone else, and then moped for the rest of her life about it like some whiny martyr.

Jun-pyo, to his credit, tried harder, and I’m not sure you can blame him for walking down that aisle after Jan-di failed to respond to his last-ditch plea. Furthermore, I think there’s a good chance that if Jae-kyung hadn’t spoken up, he may have found himself unable to take his vows. Fortunately for him, he didn’t have to find out, thanks to Jae-kyung.

And lastly, I know a lot of people are dissatisfied with Jae-kyung the character. I agree that her arc was waaaay too long, and she never should have been given such a huge presence on the show. I’d have preferred some of the other guest players to be given a longer run (Haje, for example) and hers a much shorter one, to feel more balanced overall.

But, in her defense, I think that the actress Lee Min-jung probably played this character as well as she could be played. In the hands of anyone else, I think Jae-kyung would have been even worse, and supremely irritating instead of just mildly so. Thanks to her bright effervescence, Jae-kyung came off as flawed and human — and yes, very selfish — but she also had some depth, which I appreciated.

Still, thank goodness that’s finally over! I was afraid I’d be burnt out on this drama at this point, but thankfully I’m finding myself catching a second (or third?) wind in this last stretch. I’m staunchly spoiler-free (which is becoming SO FREAKING HARD to do these days, curses be to the Internet!), so I’m only speculating when I predict we’ll probably have one big storyline and perhaps a minor one left in the remainder. Bring it on!

I agree with some of the comment here that said: at this point, could not see any reason why Jun Pyo still love Jan Di. I myself is not really like Jan Di character anymore due some of her indecision or the situation the writer makes between their love. The spark is no longer there and the character already change. I prefer Jan Di in episode 1-10, where she has the character that drawn Jun Pyo to love her.

One thing for sure, I'm not going to buy the DVD lol.

"BUT YIJUNG DIDN’T BECAUSE HE NEVER READ THE LETTER. GAEUL WOULD NOT KNOW SINCE YIJUNG DOESN’T KNOW AND HE COULDN’T TELL HER.

SO HOW COME GAEUL IS GOING FROM BUILDINGS TO BUILDINGS THEN?! HOW DID SHE FIND OUT?!"

Exactly. And Ga Eul is actually friends with Yi Jung's first love (unlike the other 2 versions where she would have had no way of contacting them), so she could have just ASKED her. Logic fail yet again.

"It is up to GJP. GJP HAS TO MAKE THE DECISION TO MARRY JK OR NOT."

Completely agree. Sure, I wish JD had put up some fight, but ultimately it was up to JP. He BROKE UP with JD; when he did he gave up the right to ask her about their street promise, or to ask her to make the decision FOR HIM whether to get married or not. That was the choice he made by putting the company's welfare over his own (and JD's) happiness--an admirable gesture, but something which in the end he couldn't sustain. I love JP dearly, but really, he brought this all on himself. We haven't even seen him doing anything Shinhwa work-related since he got back to Korea, so the dilemma didn't ring true anymore.

And it's so weird/not-true-to-character that they haven't even talked at all about the "You're a stain" Macau incident. How can they go forward w/o JP explaining why he suddenly stopped calling then dumped her in the cruelest way possible? Don't get me wrong, I'm a total JunDi shipper (telescope+zoo scenes so ADORABLE~~~), I just wish the writer/s would let them COMMUNICATE for once.

Thanks for the recap, javabeans. You rock as always!

You echoed my thoughts. The whole stain thing was too painful for me. I rejoiced when Jan di tells him off in an earlier episode saying he shouldn't explain things to a stain. Alas that joy was short lived as she ran to him the very next day. For a supposedly proud character, the girl has no self respect

Me it's since episode 1
So JP was about to marry Jae Kyung. Good for him

I sooo agree but I am not surpised since in episode 14 I found the reason to ignore Jan di somewhat ridiculious.
I remember in Japanese version when Domyoji learnt Ken was alive he cried because he was happy to see he wasn't dead and his family was fine. That's why Ken said to his mother he deserved to be the president of the company.

So true. They could have developed the whole company future thing properly rather we don't even see JP attend office after he comes to Korea. It was highly disappointing

I don't think Jandi deserves JP's devotion either! She never once fights for their love.. (if that's what they called "LOVE"). Basically she just stands there and mopes. For an annoying loud character, why so low self-esteem?

Have there been any Korean female heroine that actually stands up for herself and fight for the one she loves? I can't really think of any right now.

Problem with this series, or ANY series really is COMMUNICATION! They keep going beating around the bush until the last minute.

There is not much to fight for a guy who called JD a stain after ignoring her for six months and got a fiance after that. What self respecting woman would say that their old promise is still valid when her supposed lover is sitting with his fiance?

Actually, I think Jae Kyung has been one of the best things about this show. She is interesting and convincingly acted (by a beautiful actress). I felt it was a shame she went out with a whimper -- a mere plot device for the increasingly annoyingly helpless (and undeserving) Jan Di.

Aside, from that -- huh? And again I say, huh? A telescope in a love-nest? Ji Hoon can ship his car overseas but can't pay someone to wash it? The nation's hottest tv show can't do better than dress its hottest young men in the world's least flattering tuxedos and most ridiculous riding jacket, like they're being tricked out for the Christmas pantomime? And the biggest huh of all-- why am I still so compelled to watch this? And why don't I hate Jan Di? Weird...

And how many K-drama clichés can we cram into one episode? The dash to the airport to catch the Departing, of course. The heroine wins hearts by being kind to an Unconscious Person (who will turn out to be Someone Important). Missing a declaration through falling asleep. Gosh, we've emptied the Cliché Cupboard: what are we going to do the rest of the series? Must tune in to find out!

Thanks for a great recap once again Javabeans.Totally agree with # 17, 85,86,87,88,89 and 97. JP is just a spoiled kid to me who is very selfish for his own good. Jae Kyung put it in the right words when she told Ji Hoo about that incident when she asked Jun Pyo if he would choose love over friendship where JP answered both and would'nt give up either. She told Ji Hoo that both of them (JH and JK) are not that selfish enough. I saw both Taiwanese and Japanese versions of this drama and I was always rooting for the main leads but this Korean version made me lean towards Ji Hoo and Jan Di. The writers did not make any effort to build the JP/JD relationship and looking at photo shoots, there are more tender moments between JH and JD. I don't think they will have time to include the JP selective amnesia as time is running out plus have not heard about casting of an actress to play Umi-Chan. Most probably the introduction of the comatose man Jan-Di is caring for will be the main story before the final ending of this series. I would not be surprise if that man will be the key to Jan Di's being accepted by Monster Mom. I really think Jan Di's character is not weak at all.She is just unselfish (unlike JP) when it comes to her own good. I don't think anybody in real life would be able to survive what she went thru because of JP and even being separated with her own family. If somebody treated you the way JP did to her in Macao, you would not even want to see his face at all.How can he asked her to take that responsibility of asking her to tell him not to go thru the wedding ceremony. Which will get her into more trouble with Monster Mom.That is why, the Japanese DT and Taiwanese DS has more spine than JP as they both stood up for themselves and not involving Makino nor Shin Cai . I feel that Ji Hoo's character is more dependable . more mature than Jun Pyo's.No wonder a lot of jump shippers to the JI DEE boat though we all know that eventually the JiDee boat will sink like the Titanic in the end. It would be nice if the PD would make 2 endings that the fans can choose from .A JP and JD ending on the first half and JI Hoo and Jan Di on the last half hour. The viewers has the option to just watch what ending they would like to see. This way it will satisfy both camps which migh be equal in numbers by now. Only a thought!!!!

I haven't seen any other versions, so if it wasn't for the internet (grr) I'd be convinced that Jan-Di and Ji-Hoo will end up together -- it's the only pairing that's been properly built up. Like, Jun-Pyo and Jan-Di have overcame obstacles and are together, but will eventually realize that they aren't meant to be after all, that the obstacles are what kept them together. If that makes sense.

@105 Serendipity:
I hear you on the cupboard of clichés. I'm dreading any memory loss arc, it'll be the final nail in the coffin and only slightly "better" than if Jan-Di would turn out to have a fatal disease.

"Jae-kyung is leaving for New York tomorrow, so she asks him to deliver something to Jan-di — the star-moon necklace. Jae-kyung muses, 'You don’t know how much I’d hoped that the JJ stood for Ji-hoo and Jan-di.'" - This is such a poignant scene and the comment is so loaded. There was a very subtle split-second moment where JH looks at JK and the audience knows her comment simply struck a cord in him. He, too, can empathize and wishes that JJ stood for something else. I thought KHJ did a great job acting in this scene.

"Their initial reaction is to sneak looks at each other uncomfortably, as though embarrassed with the overt romanticism." - I thought the actual on-screen chemistry between the two actors was very forced and awkward in the beginning. After all the story plot loops, this moment was very anti-climactic. However, I thought the rest of the episode played out well, so not too many complaints.

I thought the WB/JD scene where they chat over some coffee was great. I don't know if it's KJ himself or the WB character but his presence in the drama is so mature, soothing and calming. What a hottie. I can't wait to see him in the future in other projects.

I'm glad that they're finally showing more Kim Joon(Woobin).
Even though he's part of F4 and one of the main characters, he
still has less parts. His Mother gets happy when she see comments like
"Let Kim Joon act more please" due to his lack of parts.

I have a feeling that Ji Hoo's grandfather may cause another
problem by saying that she's "my grandson’s wife-to-be."
He may have just been saying that to get Madam Kang to stop, but
knowing Madam Kang, she may use that against her, and Jun Pyo.

It's good to see more of Jun Pyo's sister :)
She's my favorite supporter of Jun Pyo/Jandi.
And Halmo (Jun Pyo's grandmother).

Bidding Farewell till next week to our fav tube boys the f4!
Well episode 22 has got the lack lustre in the Jandi feeling but I think Jandi is glad that JP doesn't get married but @ the same time got herself thinking "Oh No!. Trouble is back in action. Bring it on Mdm Kang... I'm a tough weed anyway!"

My mind was spoiled when I got the spoiler link from a fren... Freak.... I even got a stupid dream to the finale when i took my afternoon nap just now. I really hope it doesn't occur that way as lately, my premonitions had been precise and exact! STUPID DREAM.... Significant pointers that will lead to me asking myself, does JD really love JP? But whatever it is i really hope the ending will be a good an memorable one. To be honest, since the beginning of season 2, i din religously do re-run like i did from episode 1-12.... Maybe, I myself want an impact later part of the year. hahahaha

Love the Woobin scene even if it is just for a moment or 2... KHJ a.k.a Jiho is really handsome in this episode.... Maybe bcoz i just watch WGM like 3 hours before watching episode 22... The man, coma and need warmth, please let him be an important character to wrap this production!

Kiss scene.... 4 kisses and it's really blunt! No energy.... Give me the Prince Lee Shin and Shin Chea-kyung of Goong kindda kiss. or maybe they are saving the best for last...

As usual.... Reading recap after watching kept me thinking..... Soon I will miss this! So I shall see ya tomolo! Good nite!

Ahh... Thanks for the recaps Javabeans! Top quality as usual. Hoever, there's one part which I don't understand. Why does Gaeul have to spend "all her time going from building (apartment?) to building, working to the point of exhaustion" in order to "cure" Yi Jung's hand? What does going from building to building and working one's butt off help cure someone else's hand?

About Jandi not fighting for Junpyo, I think JD feels that she's not in a position to stop the wedding. Although she loves JP, she still doesn't know how JP truly feels about her. He's still blowing hot and cold with her ever since he came back from Macau--toying with her one minute and ignoring her the next. We the audience may know how they each feel about each other but it's just that they haven't had a chance to really be honest with each other after the breakup. Add on top of that JD feels that JK is a more suitable match for JP. JD feels she no longer has JP's heart and has nothing to offer him so why bother?

The way I interpreted JD's pissed expression is because:
1) It's JP's wedding. If he wants to stop it, he has to stop it himself. Why is he looking for excuses to run away? And why is he dragging her to be his excuse?
And 2) To JD, JP asking her to stop him is just setting her up to be hurt again. JD opened her heart and followed him to Macau but he stomped on her heart. So what'll be different this time around? Last time she thought she had his love. This time she has nothing from him. So if she opens herself up and asks him to stay but he doesn't, isn't that just setting her up for more heartbreak? One heartbreak from JP is enough. JD's learned her lesson. She's gonna be more cautious this time around.

lol it's interesting that you're saying JD doesn't deserve the hug. I was actually frustrated that JP hasn't shown anything to earn JD's love. But I guess it's just that their personalities and the surrounding circumstances hasn't been that conducive for them to fight for each other. Hopefully we'll see more of that in the later eps.

About Jihoo and the hair-trimming, in the MANGA itself, it was actually more bizarre. Rui, Makino and Soujirou (if I'm not mistaken. either him or Akira)were out somewhere. F2 met Makino accidentally when Soujirou was accompanying Rui who was testing his driving skill. Rui commented that Makino's hair is getting long already, nd offered to give her a haircut. then suddenly a pair of scissors came out of nowhere!!! Even Soujiro was surprised and he reasoned out that it was manga afterall. It was the hilarious part of the chapter. LOL.

Please explain i dont get this part, so his grand father does not think
they are suitable together because of their class.
or he does approve their relationship. or he think that Ji hoo best friend's girlfriend he should not come in to that relationship Yah

I don't know about anyone else, but I had a problem with the music choice in this episode when Jun-di goes to the hotel/bungalow/house that JK set up for them. I felt that the song they used was incredibly inappropriate. I definitely think that 애인만들기 was a substitute for Paradise aka random outburst of music, which it may be, but seriously that was just the wrong place to do it.

But thank you for the recap! I love it lots!

i gotta say, i already jumped off the junpyo boat a long time ago..
and its hard for me to go back there..
ive totally fallen for jihoo in this series..
the guy who silently helps her out in everything...

its sad that he as to be friends with his best friend and the girl he loves..
and then so it happened that he has to live in the same roof with her.
its torture!

i noticed while they were washing the car, jihoo is a bit trying not to get to close for her.. but then when jandi sprayed water on him, he just went along and played with her...

its tear jerking when he finally had the chance to say "i love you, and i want to shout it aloud.. thats all"... (even if its indirect manner, it takes a lot of guts!)
yet she didnt even hear it... how sadddd!!!
how pathetic..

after all.. when granpa told jihoo that he doesnt approve of jihoo and jandi.
i think he meant the opposite.
he might have just said that so jihoo would stop feeling uncomfortable..
but the truth is, grandpa really wants jandi for jihoo..

GO GRANPA! youre my only hope for jandi and jihoo!!!

Thanks Javabeans for the recap!

Watched the episode and decided to dedicate this comment to the jandi lovestrucked -4th dimentional - depressed when eating - and, apparently, took some lessons on hair styling... Jihoo.

When he cut JD's hair like a pro (meaning no hestitations or mistakes whatsoever), I was like...no seriously, for real!? hahahaha
Maybe his next business venture should be like a chain of salons or something like that..

"Ji Hoo's salon: all 4-dimentional people, welcome! "

Loved the car washing scene though. I know some people thought that it was something that the helpers or maids should do but sometimes, there are things that people just WANT to do.

Besides...CARS are like women to guys...guys take care of their cars more than their own hygiene I think.

Not that I am suggesting that Ji Hoo doesn't take a bath or something like that....hahahahaahha

Javabeans, you ask why she looks pissed, as though she’s mad that he asked? I would look pissed too - JP should grow a spine and act of his own volition, not rely on others: JK, Woo Bin, Jandi to tell him what to do. Asking Jandi to tell him not to go and use it as a justification for breaking off the wedding (which he might not do anyway, he waffles all the time) is not what he should be doing - he should be deciding things himself and not having Jandi bear the brunt of the decision.

Also, why should she tell him not to go? What has he done to deserve it? This is a guy she flew all the way to Macau to see, who then broke up with her brutally, and since he came back has been sending mixed signals at best, seemingly happy to flirt with her sometimes while maintaining a fiancee without a murmur (at least any murmur that she knows of). If she were a friend of mine, I'd tell her to stay far away from a guy like that.

JP's love might be great - or at least he always says he is, but what has he done for her? Words are cheap. As other commenters pointed out, all she got was trouble, physical harm, and humiliation because of him. OK, all that and a pair of expensive goggles. If we are going by actions, I'd say she should be madly in love with Ji Hoo because he is the one who is always there for her, takes care of her, and picks up the pieces every time. She is not, which is fine - you can't order your heart, but we were talking of "deserving" - it's not Jandi, at this point, who has to work to deserve JP's love, it's JP who should try his hardest to do that.

Lee Min Ho is wonderful, and Jun Pyo is a charismatic hottie . But he is still spineless all-talk-and-no-action charismatic hottie, I am sorry to say.

I really felt like this episode wasn't quite as good as the last few have been - nothing I could exactly put my finger on, but I didn't feel as emotionally invested as I did during 20 and 21 in particular.

I was wondering, because I'm American and so all my perceptions are different, are GJP and JD supposed to have slept together?? It seemed like that was the point of the one bed, but then they didn't have any of the freak-out embarrassment that I've seen in other K-dramas after a first night together. In an American show, of course, they would have - but their kiss in this ep didn't seem passionate enough to be leading down that road at this point...

Sorry if that's an innapropriate question, but sometimes I think it's hard for an American to properly understand what a Korean show is implying, and I just want to be clear!

Thanks so much for the recaps - you and arashi.vox have made my month.

I was reading all the Grandpa/Jandi granddaughter comments and I have a different take. I think Grandpa wants to "adopt" Jandi as his granddaughter - this way she will have a guardian (one that even Mdm Kang is afraid of) and so that Ji Hoon will have a permanant friend. That would explain the granddaughter comment and why he thinks JH and JD are not right for each other - they are better as friends for life.

And I think Mdm Kang in the past must have been someone similar to Jandi - otherwise why would she hate JD so much and why would everyone comment on how much she has changed?

In any case, this episode has made the series much more interesting. Back on the cute track!

Thanks again!!

And if the PD was going to go to the trouble of focusing on the bed scattered with "rose petals arranged in a heart configuration" (cheesy~), then BY GOD where's our bed scene?!?!

I'm not even talking about sex (calm down parents XD), just maybe something that starts off awkward and bickery (this is JunDi after all) then turns sweet and sexy (but still rated 15) like Goong's Shin and Chae Gyung sleeping in each others' arms on their honeymoon.
http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/9694/goong16199.jpg

They could've tied it back to that New Caledonia scene when JD was so freaked out at JP being in her room and he said he would never (ha!) force himself on a girl who didn't return his feelings--showing how far they've come since then.

We've been seriously JunDi-deprived, a few more happy scenes wouldn't have hurt (when we all know this is just the calm before the Mama Kang Storm).

I want to know why in the majority of Kdrama's, the actors (ESPECIALLY most of the actresses) CANNOT / ARE NOT CAPABLE OF portraying what a REAL kiss is suppose to look / feel like? All the kissing scenes in this drama, IMO, are extremely unrealistic. Who kisses like that? With such stiffness? No passion? And we're suppose to believe it's a GRAND LOVE? Yeah right?!!! I mean, we don't have to see mauling, but move those lips a little! Geez!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately, I'm also on the JiHoo - Jan Di wagon, so of course, I will be disappointed by the ending.

I think the reason that Jan-di refused to ask Jun-pyo to not marry Jae-kyung is because it's up to Jun-pyo to make that decision and take that action. He shouldn't do it only because Jan-di is begging him. It's not fair that she should take that responsibility.

I don't see much reaction from Jan Di on loving either Ji Hoo or Jun Pyo. It's true that Jun Pyo should have gotten out of his wedding on his own, but I agree that Jan Di's expression looked like she was more pissed off than potentially losing the love of her life for all time. If you're going to lose the one you love, you do not looked pissed off b/c he's not doing something about it, you try to stop it from happening! Why isn't she afraid of losing Jun Pyo? But maybe she just expresses fear through anger...I donno...that acting just seemed weird.

As for with Ji Hoo, it seems platonic but with this episode, suddenly there are flashbacks to all their lovey-dovey moments. I see why the director would want to throw you off about the final pairing but Jan Di herself really hasn't come out about her own feelings, which I find frustrating.

It's seen that she loves Jun Pyo for the longest time and mopes about him, but she never does anything and plays along to the point of being the bridesmaid to the bride of the man she supposedly loves, while accusing him of not doing anything to cancel the wedding. Oh irony. If we apply the question of choosing friendship and love for Jan Di, it seems she chooses friendship.

Now, with Ji Hoo, I'm really not sure if she knows he loves her or just thinks they are friends. With the way he acts she must have some idea of his true feelings, imo.

In any case, I thought it was really in bad taste to be having flashbacks about Ji Hoo when Jan Di just got back together with Jun Pyo again, finally. Ji Hoo has had sooooo many scenes w/ Jan Di that the main pairing, to me, seems really weak at this point. While I see Jun Pyo loving Jan Di a lot, with his open declarations etc. I don't see Jan Di feeling the same. She certainly doesn't seem ready to go all out for love like Jun Pyo is, and imo, she just doesn't seem like she's in love with him.

I'm a bit disappointed that Jandi didn't say anything in response to Junpyo's plea. I did not want or expect her to fight to get JP back. As the other commenters said, Junpyo has been so cruel to her so i at least wanted her to burn him. I didn't want her to be asking Junpyo to stay because HE should be the one to beg for her forgiveness. So i think that Jandi looked pissed off because she's meaning to say "Make up your mind already JP! Why do you have to stall 'til the very last minute?!" -- which she can't manage to say because she also values her friendship with JK and she puts other's happiness first.

On the other hand, i really really wanted Junpyo to do ALL he can to get the girl(but JK, JH, WB, YJ, & GE ended up saving his a**). YES, i know that he even swallowed his pride by getting down on his knees---but still, i wanted him to make a move. His mom will find out anyway sooner or later that he's with Jandi so he really needs to face the problem head-on. Thanks javabeans for giving me a tiny hint of hope that JP would've probably messed up on the vows(it really did seem that he was gonna make a run). I also see that people are starting to dislike JP for not having a backbone & stuff but we should also remember that he was being blackmailed. Its not just selfish love in his side this time because he walked straight down the isle when he found out that Jandi was (randomly) taken hostage. If i were in his shoes--- i'd be extremely cautious! So if he decided to make a run that moment-- then who knows what may have happened out of such stupidity?

Another thing that continues to bother me is that Jandi forgave Junpyo so easily. From the way I look at it, Jandi deserves more than a crazy bastard that doesn't take her feelings in to consideration. The only reason I could think of that Jandi wants to be with Junpyo is that she could actually be herself-- bickering all day long, someone who's a child at heart. The things she's unable to do with poor Jihoo. I'm also remembering why Junpyo really likes Jandi--- it's because she has warmth(as mentioned by Mr. Jung). We couldn't really see this kind of warmth with Jaekyung because she's just as lonesome as Junpyo, so she didn't really have anything to offer. Anyway, when Junpyo answered Jandi with "I have it all-- money, name, looks. All i need left is you" stuff, i couldn't help but think on how all those words will backfire if it ever reaches the point when he loses everything.. Will that mean that he wouldn't have any more reason to love Jandi? ... very interesting ... Now let's go back to the bothersome topic of forgiveness --- there are still a lot of misunderstandings/assumptions/happenings that still need to be clarified. The main couple still needs a decent conversation over what happened the past 9 episodes(swimming, break-up, 'JP & JK historic night', etc). seriously! darn scriptwriters..

I really didn't wanna say this but YiJung and GaEul's story is getting quite tiresome. I used to think that YiJung was awesome-- he has money, name, talent, and manners. But now he's turned into a helpless crybaby. I'm starting to think that GaEul is too good for him. She's smart-ish, daring, innocent, and pretty. Smart-- as in she analyzed Yijung to the fullest, black and white. Maybe that's why she likes him? The innocent, childish side of YJ? seems like it. whatever. these Soeulmates are gonna end up together unless they're ready to get a huge fit from a raging storm of anti-fans.

x. did anyone else recognize Junpyo's prisoner clothes?! He's really locked up! What's next? Chains? Skulls?

x. to whoever mentioned Woobin[a mafia dude] talking 'bout skin problems is hilarious! i loveee him. better lines, i must say. He really needs a girl.

x. it's not just the F4 cars & Jihoo's random white horse that were shipped to Jeju. Junpyo just had to take his blankie along with him. lol. so childish. =P

x. And here's another major flaw, unless it's yet to be explained.. Do you guys remember when Junpyo and Jandi got locked up in that cable car? When they had that flimsy argument on telling apart stars and satellites? here's a huge WTF. !!!!
We learned in this episode that Junpyo studied hard to learn about stars and astronomy(and even started showing off). So is it true that Jandi mistook stars for satellites? ? ? ? ? or is Junpyo having split personalities or some kinda issues?

my disappointment and laughter finally balanced out.
I'd hate to say goodbye to this drama after next week...

If I was so in love with someone, there’s nothing I wouldn’t do in order to win that love. And frankly, Jae-kyung and Ji-hoo’s feelings for their respective loves just comes across as so much stronger. They’re both willing to sacrifice their love for the happiness of their loved one.
