Boys Before Flowers: F4 Talk Show Special

As you probably know by now, Gu Hye-sun‘s recent accident caused some filming delays, so a special broadcast aired today instead of a regular episode. Episode 17 will air on Tuesday, so next week’s episodes will be 18 and 19.

Also, a few other bits of news:

  • There will be NO extension.
  • Therefore the series will end on Monday, March 30, followed by another special broadcast.
  • A second OST will be coming out, which will include Kim Hyun-joong‘s acoustic-y version of “Because I’m Dumb.”

SONG OF THE DAY

Kim Bum-soo – “보고싶다” (I Miss You). This is the song Kim Hyun-joong plays on the piano at the very end of the special. [ Download ]

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

The photos below include shots of Gu Hye-sun’s smashed van. The F4 guys all visited her in the hospital and expressed their concern, and wished her a speedy recovery.

In General

It was a little awkward. Okay, really awkward. But since this was a last-minute hour of programming thrown together to have something to air today, it’s understandable. There was nothing that revealing, mostly chatting about how they got their parts, their favorite segments, NGs, and so on.

For those interested in timeline, the drama began shooting on November 5. They traveled overseas on their Macau shoot on December 1, and the series premiered on January 5.

Hosts were announcer Han Seok-joon and singer-entertainer-MC Hyun Young.

I know a lot of people find Hyun Young annoying, and I have thought so too, but you have to give her credit — she’s really good as host. She was particularly helpful in glossing over some of the awkward “talk show” portions, because she breezes on to keep things moving and doesn’t let the mood die. Han Seok-joon was good, too, and it was cute to see that these two are obviously fans of the show. (I hate when the MCs of specials have obviously barely seen the show and ask stupid questions.)

Some tidbits

  • [Lee Min-ho says:] They get about 2 to 3 hours of sleep in a good night. When shooting is tight, they have to get by on one or two, finishing one night’s shoot and jumping straight into the next day’s.
  • [Kim Hyun-joong] The entire crew, not just the actors, have lost about 5 to 6 kg each.
  • [Lee Min-ho] The reality of their popularity struck after episodes 3 and 4, when they would go to outdoor shoots and be inundated with fans, sometimes 2,000 to 3,000 spectators watching the filming.
  • [Lee Min-ho] To get some of their footage, the crew had to pretend to pack up for the day to get fans to go home. Then they would come back after everyone left, to shoot in the dead of night/early morning. This also contributed to filming delays.
  • [Lee Min-ho] His favorite scene is the first (real) kiss with Jan-di on the swing, on the playground.

Both hosts mentioned some of their favorite lines and asked Lee Min-ho to re-enact them. He messed up a couple times, but you know what, it’s a little startling (and cool) to see him go from laughing and modest right into character.

They requested several lines (like Jun-pyo’s exchange with Jun-hee about the types of men she hates). It’s cute because it showed both hosts actually follow the show closely — and, I think, also telling that all the lines they asked for were from Min-ho.

Casting

  • [Lee Min-ho] Went to his second audition with a perm.
  • Current Jun-pyo hair is the sixth perm they tried.
  • [Kim Hyun-joong] He first heard news of his casting when in Japan with SS501, preparing for a concert. Was on his laptop and saw the internet reports.
  • Surprised, he called his reps to ask what this was about, and thought it was a joke.
  • He didn’t actually seem that excited to have gotten the part (or at least, he seemed like he was put out that he was cast without being told). He thought he should work on the group album first, but his management company’s president told him to take the role since it would be a good opportunity.
  • [Kim Bum] Was cast later, after his stint on East of Eden.
  • [Kim Joon] Auditioned several times, and saw Lee Min-ho at one audition. Wondered what was up with his weird perm. First impression of him was that Min-ho was tall and glared a lot.
  • [Kim Hyun-joong] Regarding his impressions of his co-stars: He first saw Lee Min-ho in Public Enemy Returns and knew him as “that kid who dies.” Saw Bum in Eden and knew him as “that guy who cries well.”
  • [Kim Hyun-joong] Although he and Kim Joon were both singers, their activities didn’t overlap, so they met for the first time on this drama.

Thoughts on the other F4 guys

  • [Kim Joon] Min-ho has an unexpectedly cute side, a kinda dumb charm. For instance, Jun-pyo’s laugh is Min-ho’s real laugh.
  • [Kim Joon] Hyun-joong is the “mood-maker,” which means he lightens the set, says funny and oddball things.
  • [Kim Joon] Bum is the youngest but very mature. He helped him (Joon) a lot with acting.

(KIM JOON IS SUCH A GOOD SPEAKER. I keep forgetting he’s the least experienced — not just in acting but in the entertainment business overall. He has a very easygoing energy, he interviews well, he speaks smoothly and answers questions well. Bum tends to not say much, Min-ho seems bashful, and Hyun-joong comes across a little reserved and disconnected, but also says some funny things without meaning to be funny. Joon is awesome. I can totally see how he was cast despite a nonexistent profile or credits to his name; he definitely has “It,” that star appeal.)

About Kim Joon

  • [Kim Hyun-joong] Kim Joon, like his character of Woo-bin, is the one who solves problems.
  • [Kim Hyun-joong] Joon will say he can’t do something, but then it’ll turn out he’s really good and he’ll win at everything. Calls him “a bit like a con artist” in that respect (everyone cracks up).
  • [Lee Min-ho] Joon is too modest, because he’ll say he’s not good at something but there’s nothing he can’t do.

NGs

Most of these have already aired (some were at the end credits of previous episodes), but there’s one part that was funny. In the scene at the Macau resort hotel, in which Jan-di spies Jun-pyo getting friendly with a woman at the bar, the unedited raw footage shows that the two actors are just trading greetings like “Hello.”

The Chinese actress says some Korean phrases she knows (“thank you,” “oppa,” “I love you”), then a few things in Chinese. (All the while they’re in character, looking chummy.) Min-ho says at one point, “I don’t know what she’s saying,” and then, “I’m out of things to say.”

Min-ho is named (by Hyun Young) the NG King. He admits that he’s the first to own up when he’s messed up.

The sets

The special ends with a tour of Jun-pyo’s and Ji-hoo’s rooms. Kim Joon has actually never visited Ji-hoo’s set, because his character has never been there.

Earlier, when Hyun Young asked about their musical skills, she requested a guitar performance from Hyun-joong (he complied), then from the others. The other guys deflected, saying they could play the piano but not the guitar. Here, there’s a piano, so she asks Kim Bum and Lee Min-ho to play. They both say they’re not very good, but play a tune each. (Min-ho’s not lying; he stumbles through “Moon River” but it’s adorable.)

And then, Kim Hyun-joong closes off with the song posted at the top, “보고싶다” (I Miss You).

And that’s it! See y’all tomorrow when the fun resumes!

It would be awesome if Lee Min Ho did a few episodes of WGM. Or if they had Kim Hyung-Joon come back and put him opposite Lee Si Young. Those oddbals are soulmates yo!

"hey get about 2 to 3 hours of sleep in a good night. When shooting is tight, they have to get by on one or two, finishing one night’s shoot and jumping straight into the next day’s."

With the pervasive car accidents, you have to wonder whether the drivers are also exhausted (presumably, if the actors are working, their managers must also be available.) It's not bad luck; it's extreme labor demands.

Kim Joon was a revelation. He appears to have more self confidence than the rest of the F4's. Kim Bum seems to be the most shy of them.Hyun Jung is a natural comedian without even trying.Lee Min Ho is very adorable and charming.I enjoyed the special and wish Jan Di a speedy recovery. The van was demolished and Goo Hye Suns guardian angel must be on her side for just getting a lip injury.Group 8 should hire professional drivers for their 5 top stars as they can afford it with revenues they are getting from BBF. I'm pretty sure that except for Goo Hye Sun since she has the most acting resume, the F4's are not getting paid like a Song Sung Heon. Please keep them safe and give them some rest!!!! Maybe Korea does not have an Actors Guild Asso. like the one here in the US.

SO cute that Hyun Joong still remembers how to play Bogoshipdah!! He did learn it for hwangbo when she asked him to. I miss them together =(

Btw... I guess that Tuesday-episode-being-always-better-than-Monday-episode-pattern will no longer apply =(
now that the week starts with an even episode (which is usually better)...
unless they change the script a bit. ah we'll see next week!

I personally love Hyun Young, she's literally hilarious. I find Lee Kyungshil or Jo Hyerun or that Chae Young from Star Golden Bell to be over the top and ridiculous. Hyun Young's got some sass and her comedic timing is great.

Yay` thanks for the post!

If Monday episodes will now air on Teusdays, does this mean Monday episodes (which were really suppose to be shown on Teusday) be better than Monday episodes?

We will now see if they make Tuesday eps better on purpose XD

@Alvina - They came in character XD But hyun joong looks good the best~ imo XD

And Hyun Young really is hilarious. She seems like a fun person to be with. Really comfortable ^^

Kim Joon might have been sitting on a separate chair but he still felt closer to Kim Bum and Hyun Joong than MinHo. The special did feel a little MinHo focused but I suppose given his popularity it's inevitable.

I think there should be a BOF special WGM, recruit a few side characters to even out the boy/girl ratio then sit back and watch the fun.

Thank you for all your wonderful comments as always for Kim Joon. This is why I look forward to your reviews since you're very objective.

Anyways, it's amazing how people tend to blow things out of proportion. I actually agree with the observation of Alvina that there was a much more obvious distance between Min-ho and the other three. The single chair should've been placed before the sofa so that Min-ho can sit there, and his three knights can sit in the sofa.

@Jo,

"I think there should be a BOF special WGM, recruit a few side characters to even out the boy/girl ratio then sit back and watch the fun."

Kind of a shame we don't have Love Letter anymore. How awesome would it be if Kim Joon defeated Lee Min Ho big time? Or to see a F4 Bokko Dance? :D

They really should do a WGM F4 show around Lee Si Young ( Boys Before Gundam?) Watching her and Jun Jin is like watching a Lee Na Young comedy.

Or do a WGM mashup of East of Eden and BBF. Aka the "Battle of the Lee Dong Chuls" -- Song Seung Heon vs. Kim Bum, switching between Lee Yeon Hee and Kim So Eun. "Step away old man!! There can only be one Dong Chul Hyun Oppa!!"

By the way, that last last special episode, will it be for the WHOLE cast? As in like Goong? If not, it'll be really lame...

Anyway, now, it's likely to be the Mondays-good- tuesdays-bad pattern. I guess I'll have to rely on your recaps of Iljimae to keep me sane...
Iljimae is so wonderful. Nice acting, nice shots, nice music. Not like BBF. Not as in the acting (I guess it's passable and isn't much of a problem.) but the shots and the music. THE PD AND MUSIC DIRECTOR MUST GO BACK TO UNIVERSITY TO FINISHED THEIR ARTS COURSE! Aish! They ruined what could be the most wonderful fan-girly type drama in Korea...

The guys are just so adorable. I guess the disproportional attention given to them is just part and parcel of HYD. Jerry and Jun were also more popular - not necessarily more swoon-worthy - than the rest. The whole story is centered on their romance with the girl afterall. Still, I felt that Kim Joon should not have been left out of the white day 'wish list' bit. It was so glaring an exclusion, I couldn't help but feel sorry for him. He actually left a much deeper impression on me than the rest of the boys for being so gracious and sporting throughout the show despite being the oft-neglected one.

they are so shy. Seems that everyone having fun and tried to destressed from their job. I wonder if GHS watched the special. if yes sure she laughed a lot..

Kim Joon haven t got to speak a lot to leave a nice impression in me.
Kim Bum was so shy but when it comes to acting he is really professional
JH show how he could entertained naturally without great effort and he also look so tired
Min Ho always laughed. it seems that he really enjoy this special and get to destressed a lil bit from his JP character

I was hesitant at first to watch this, but it wasn't so bad.. it was actually interesting to see the actors out of their character, and also do a review of the episodes in case you missed something.

The hostess was really funny, i was jealous when she got Ji-Hoo to put the shoes on her.. :D Plus he was really adorable, like even though he doesn't speak as lively as the others, he just had this cute aura going for him.. like when they went to his place they were talking about towers, and he mentioned something about Big Bang's Tower was TOP or something.. (I was trying to understand very fast the subtitles for the chinese/korean flashing by on the screen)

I think sometimes its nice to take a break and just talk to the actors.

Thanks for the quick explanations!

I was wondering if you would be recapping the special. Many thanks for your efforts!

Based purely on what I saw and not what I heard, it would appear that Kim Joon was most at ease with the presenter's question and answer format. Being the eldest amongst the F4, I guess you could put it down to maturity but as you noted, as he is relatively new to the entertainment industry, credit to him for his professionalism.

I've seen Kim Hyun-joong on the other variety shows of late and it would appear that he is the class clown, the easy going one. I've therefore grown to 'accept' and even congratulate(?) him for his acting on BOF as it would appear that he is actually extending himself in character and not just playing himself.

Kim Bum, I will agree, appears shy and reserved but I'm going to put that down to age. He is such a sweetie.

Lee Min-ho seemed to be still suffering from his cold/flu. That cough sounded awful! I did admire how he could change into character so quickly as well ... and the gaffs, well, they're just part of the Gu Jun-pyo charm, no?. Whilst the presenters did seem to focus on Lee Min-ho, I think that is a credit to him and the show. I've been a huge supporter of Lee Min-ho from day 1 of BOF and I'm really glad to see him shine in the K-entertainment industry at the moment.

See you later/tomorrow for more BOF craziness!

To: # 84 Del - "did anyone notice at around the end when lee min-ho was playing the piano, kim joon and the female host sort of had some interaction?"

I noticed it while watching. I think she is using Kim Joon's back to hide her signal to the male host. You should also notice how the male host extended his hand behind Kim to interact with her and then he withdrew his hand. Maybe she was passing a little cheat note to him to say as the ending of the show as it was almost time to wrap it up while everyone was in the mood of piano playing.
Quite common in a live show as their is always something unexpected happening with the guests.

Javabean: I really appreciate your comment on Kim Joon. I am a big fan of LMH and KHJ regardless. But I still think the media should give him a fair share of exposure. He is not bad at all. I saw him at the variety show " happy together (?) " with KHJ and Gu Hye Sun. Again, the camera panned away from him quite often. He was at the Baesang Award night as one of the award announcers too. He really needs more jobs to build his career!

I was also left with the impression that Kim Joon is a good speaker. You can really tell that he's the oldest of the bunch from the steady way he speaks. Since he is relatively inexperienced, AND his character has a smaller storyline in BFF, it's inevitable that he receives less attention and less screen time (even in talk-shows). But I'm really looking forward to his future acting work!!!

This is my first time to comment on BBF casts and Episodes. I waited to see a goodly number of episodes to make my comments.
1. Jan-Di character can not be better protrayed and dramatized like that of actress-extraordinaire- Gu Hye Sun. Her eyes, are the most dazzling story teller of the heart!...her voice tone and inflection is hereditary after all.
As she nears her college years, she is much calmer and more reflective....acting wise. Her beloved senses radiates when Ji-Hoon presence is present. ( don't we all respond more positvely too like that) as opposed to J-Pyo's grude sense of love and expressions. ( won't we all become a fiesty Jan-Di as well) That said, to all Jan-Di bashing writers, " walk in her shoes" ....
2. Her hair and make-up is so very awesome for based closely to the comic character in HYD. She is the closest resemblance...her eyes sells her for me.
3. She is the most humble of all the casts and deserves to be the Princess of Korea during the ending of the drama. She is actually the most beautiful of all the casts in real life....and yet she lives the character well. CHEERS! and finish the bottle!

4. Lee Minho - I agree with all of the writers here 2000%. My only point is Lee Min HO HAS NOT REALLY GIVEN PUBLIC CREDIT TO his CO-STAR " GU HYE SUN" for making him more than handsomely Adorable.
Yes, No other actor in Korean Drama can HOLD a CANDLE to him at the age of 22 YO. not even Song IL Gook. ( who rose to stardom in his 35-37the Year)

In real life, I believe a gal like GHS is his perfect match......

5. GHS and Ji-Pyo should star in normal adult drama after this to bring out their real and Natural sensuous sides....Hollywood would totally embrace her...but she needs to star with Lee Min Ho. Their incredible chemistry will explode....like those fire-works!

Lee Min Ho has the incredible sensual charisma to melt GHS in a normal Romatic drama.

Thanks for receiving my reflective thoughts on BBF main Casts.

"GHS and Ji-Pyo should star in normal adult drama after this to bring out their real and Natural sensuous sides…"

Actually I wouldn't be surprised if Koo takes a long, long break after BBF. She agreed to do BBF partially because she wanted to do something less strenuous and lighter than the two sageuks she already starred in 2008. (Her work ethic is absolutely amazing. Consider that she did Pure 19, King+I, Chil Woo, and BBF -- all shows with big grind -- with very short breaks between each.) Well, BBF turned out to be the most physically demanding job of her career.

Fascinating stuff, seeing the boys behind the Phenomenon. They are just ordinary young men (and none too bright, some of them), but they are hurtling towards demi-god-dom. They seem so innocent and overwhelmed now. I wonder how long it will take before they are hardened and polished, the sweeties.
