Kim Ah-joong and Hwang Jung-min together for Six Months

This is pretty big casting news: Kim Ah-joong and Hwang Jung-min are being paired as romantic leads in the upcoming miniseries Six Months [식스먼스].

The KBS Wednesday-Thursday drama is described as sweet and happy, and the brief description tickles my interest in just the right way — Hwang Jung-min plays an honest and good-hearted postman who runs into Kim Ah-joong’s super-famous top-actress character in a working-class neighborhood where he delivers mail.

Through whatever plot maneuverings that ensue, the two end up in a contract marriage (which, I’d guess, is where the “six months” of the title comes in).

This news is something of a surprise, since we haven’t been hearing about this drama at all, and all of a sudden it’s premiering next month. On top of that, it’s unexpected to see these two movie stars together for a television show, particularly in Hwang’s case.

This’ll be Hwang’s first-ever drama series, after many years of building a respected body of film work (he debuted in a musical in 1995). By the way, his next movie Private Eye [그림자 살인] releases on April 2, and not long ago he announced his upcoming film, Like a Moon Escapes From Clouds [구름을 벗어난 달처럼] with actors Uhm Tae-woong and Ryu Seung-beom and King and the Clown director Lee Joon-ik.

As for Kim, after shooting to overnight stardom with the 2006 sleeper romantic comedy 200 Pound Beauty, she has taken her time choosing her follow-up project, and has mostly stuck to commercial endorsements. She did, however, take on a role in The Good, The Bad, The Weird director Kim Ji-woon’s short film Gift with Jung Woo-sung, and is set to star with Ryu Seung-beom in 29 Years. She was last on television in the 2006 daily drama Bizarre Bunch [별난남자 별난여자].

Yoon-ah, Kwon Sang-woo, Kim Sun-ah

Six Months will follow KBS’s current Wednesday-Thursday show, I Hate You But Let’s Try Again, and premieres at the end of April.

So based on flimsy pre-show information, here’s my initial ranking of the upcoming Wednesday-Thursday three-way standoff:

  1. Six Months, KBS. It may have vague plot similarities with A Star’s Lover and Notting Hill, but as those two are vastly different from each other, that doesn’t bother me. Plus! Contract relationship! It is an overdone cliché, but one that gets me. Every. Single. Time. There’s very little information about the drama itself and perhaps it’ll end up a yawn, but I like both actors. At 38, Hwang has the kind of film career most serious actors would love to have. Kim Ah-joong is probably more famous than her resumé merits, but I thought she gave her 200 Pound Beauty role unexpected depth and played her plastic-beauty character with bubbly charm and sweet sincerity.
  2. Cinderella Man, MBC. Kwon Sang-woo and Yoon-ah strike me as an odd pair and this role-switching storyline seems a little dated, but either it’ll be mindless fun or a hot mess. (Please let it be a hot mess!)
  3. City Hall, SBS. Sorry, but Kim Sun-ah’s mayoral role sounds like a snooze. Perhaps a polished, sleekly directed snooze — and, as its PD and writer gave us the shrill and histrionic On Air, maybe an occasionally melodramatic snooze.

But, as with anything, that’s just my opinion. We don’t have long to wait, in any case.

I can't believe they're still using contract marriages and amnesia based story lines these days. Sometimes I wonder why I'm still interested in Korean dramas. But oh well, it's not like there's anything else better on.

@11,

As long as there is a hospital scene with a humidifier turning the recuperating room into a rain forest, and a totally mitchin girl who would rather die than see someone else happy, then I'm happy. Amnesia might be overused, but you can never have enough humidifiers.

=)

You know, Six months sounds really good. And yes, the contract relationship might have been overused, but it really really really works for me.

Wow. Yoon-ah looks just a bit younger than KSW in that photo. I guess making her look older is much better than making Kwon Sang Woo's character, Gu JunPyo's age. hahaha.

doesn't Kim Ajoong tower over Hwang Jungmin??? seems odd they would pair those two together... and he usually does movies not mini-series.

Between City Hall, Cinderella Man, and 6 Months - I only care about 6 months.... it's more appealing while the other... not so much (maybe I would have waited for Cinderella Man if not for Yoona and KSW pairing.... odd... odd... and ODD)

And no matter how many times we get overused plots, if it works, why not XD

Kim Ah-joong and Hwang Jung-min are being paired as romantic leads in the upcoming miniseries...

Not like the others I'm a litlle sceptical about this pairing, since KAJ hasn't been in a drama for a very long time, and this is the first drama for HJM. I don't know how they will interact in this drama. But I trust HJM to play his character smoothly. I'm not sure about KAJ. And I definitely will watch this drama for sure...

I've always had this question, how is acting in a drama different than acting in a movie? I've always seen dramas just longer, more spread out, versions of movies XD They're just longer.. ?
*confused*

Oh man, contract relationships. *squee* I'm a sucker for them, I'll admit it. At least this time it's the girl that's super-famous and the guy that's average.

I agree with your prediction on the Wed-Thurs drama offerings, though. I'm actually not a huge fan of Kwon Sang-oo *ducks projectiles* but I'm fully prepared to LOL my arse off at his new drama, whether because it's genuinely funny or because it's terrible. I'll take either. XD

And LOL @ 식스먼스. My Korean-American friend has a theory that eventually Koreans won't speak Korean at all, just English based on Korean pronunciation. She has lots of photographic evidence of advertisements and packages that reinforce this theory from her yearly trips to Korea. I'm going to have to tell her about the title of this show.. [She also got a big kick out of that first episode of Beethoven Virus, when they were holding 오케스트라 오디션's.]

I gonna be honest...this is one of the reasons I LOVE k-dramas. I know it's cliche but I love it, love it, love it :)

And I really miss it these days so I'm glad they're doing it again.

I also like the girl-pretends-to-be-a-boy stories as well... which is like in every historical Chinese drama :)

@ #22 Kender,
all the 3 Wed-Thur dramas that would compete this April have this "Korean-based-on-English-pronunciation"
• [SBS] City Hall (시티홀),
• [MBC] Cinderella Man (신데렐라맨)
• [KBS2] Six Months (식스 먼스)
interesting...

Agreed!! It's like Pinkberry yogurt. Kinda monotonous and overrated, yet you can't actually say no . . .

"[MBC] Cinderella Man (신데렐라맨)"

Apparently, KSW is going to wear a PAMA for it. I still like KSW a lot, but dang the desperation is just unseemly.

Ok, you got me. The truth is most of my favorite dramas revolve around contract marriages and amnesia as well, such as Full House and Green Rose (also Time of Dog & Wolf), and in a way I do miss the old skool k-dramas.

But there comes a time when you need to reinvent yourself in order to retain the interest of the audience, as people do generally grow tired of the same ol' stuff. I guess they have been trying, as 2008 dramas were a bit different to what we're used to, but it also turned out to be the worst year for k-dramas, so maybe that's why they're going back to the old tried and tested formula.

Having said that, as much as my interest in k-dramas has waned, I always keep coming back to it. I even started watching Hollywood movies again after a 3 year hiatus but it just doesn't hit the spot :(

@belleza

I'll have to try pinkberry yogurt one day....but something tells me I will be able to say no afterwards. Not really a yoghurt person :)

@ Kobe

Yeah, I know what you mean. I don't watch Hollywood movies much either because they feel a bit frantic... it's like they try to squeeze so much into 2 hours that at the end I feel really tired.

And I definitely won't touch American dramas any more because I just don't have the time to devote 5+ years of my life to see how it ends.

Which is why Asian dramas are the best. You have bite-sized 11 episode j-dramas, all-nigher 16 ep k-dramas, and go to work tired for a week 40 ep c-dramas :)

My take is a tie between six months and city hall. Not sure if cinderella man is in the same league. Though i am in a mood for something different, I will give 6 months (contract marriage re-hash) oh...maybe 5 eps to find something different. Heck, maybe will give all 3 the 5 eps chance before i pass my final judgement.
God, help me if all 3 compete for equal attention!

oh,,,yoonah may look her age...KSW just looks out of place. ;-)
