Monday episode of Boys Before Flowers delayed following accident

The Monday (March 2) episode of Boys Before Flowers will be replaced by a special “F4 talk show” broadcast instead, due to delays in filming caused by Gu Hye-sun‘s latest accident.

Initially, the actress’s February 27 car accident had been deemed trifling, no doubt because production was eager to resume filming. It was then reported that Gu’s accident was more serious than initially thought, and that she had to receive stitches in the mouth — she had slammed into the seat in front of her when the vehicles collided. (PSA: Seat belts. They are good things.) Then news followed that with a wave of pacifying “Gu is okay, she’s returning to set” messages. And now, finally, it’s been announced the 17th episode will be delayed while Gu rests in the hospital on the recommendation of doctors.

Production company Group Eight has announced that they will be putting together a last-minute special for Monday’s broadcast, with Episode 17 to air on Tuesday. Group Eight CEO Song Byung-joon said, “It’s the responsibility of the producers to think of the actors’ health and safety. We will compensate by putting forth a special program whose quality is on par with our regular programming.” (Insert snarky comment of your choice here.)

The special will feature F4 members Lee Min-ho, Kim Hyun-joong, Kim Bum, and Kim Joon showing the cameras behind the scenes on the set locations, unaired footage, and other clips. The proceedings will be hosted by MC Han Seok-joon and Hyun Young. Gu Hye-sun is expected to return to filming mid-week.

The silver lining in all this? More time = (hopefully) better episodes and less fatigued actors. Also, with production off by one episode, expect another special to air at some point (my guess is that it will come after the last episode).

What happens to a drama still airing when leads actors meet some serious accident?

Delay or cancellation, usually. Delay if it's something that will heal quickly or can be filmed around, or cancelled (rare) if it's serious.

Although I really look forward to Monday-Tuesday episode of Boys Before Flowers, I'm glad that the production team and netword decided to shut things down and let their stars heal properly. The F4 Boys and Gu Hye-sun have really been suffering a lot with all the accidents and fatigue. I hope that the production company learns that pushing their stars to a certain breaking point is not only a disadvantage for their actors but would also make the whole production suffer. Hopefully, the way Korean dramas are filmed changes a bit and gives the actors and production teams ample time to put together a great show without having to sacrifice their casts health and the quality of their work.

better that she feels better and at her 100% to give us a fantastic performance and an episode worth watching. even if the story or dialogue is crappy, a great actor/actress will make it happen. although i think the story and dialogue works quite well... still if she wasn't feeling great (and she is our main character) then even if the story/dialogue is great then overall itll be crappy... it's a circle where one effects the other no matter what...

These managers need to be more careful while driving. So many accidents are happening. I guess that the managers are tired too from all of the weird hours, but still. I hope Goo Hye Sun and all of the other injured actors make full recoveries soon! It feels like the Korean production system of super tight turnaround times is dangerous... you never hear about this sort of thing happening in the U.S.

Also, I guess this means that Monday episodes will be good and Tuesday episodes will be bad (since the one episode delay)? Time to readjust expectations.

Looking at the number of accidents happening lately.. it seems like these managers need to hire drivers of their own -_-

The way Korea films dramas frankly confuses me, do the pros really out weigh the cons?

It's sad that it's come to this but finally the cast and crew can (hopefully) get some rest and the drama will be all the better for it.

Yeah, have a good rest and get well soon, GSH and everyone else! Love your show and all the hard work is worth it! But really, the Korean production system has to be overhauled for the sake of the health and sanity of these poor actors.

Thank God she is alright, still one piece and only her lips. She is the best actress for this series. She is unique and unreplaceable.

" Almighty God the Father in heaven touch Koo Hye Sun with your healing power. Keep all the casts of Boys Over Flowers save and healthy at all times. Lord, watch over them. In Jesus Christ's name we pray. Amen."

I care for the safety of all the casts. They all need to rest.

Seriously, why can't they just hire drivers? There's no point for
the managers to be driving if they're tired as well. It's like letting your
designated driver be drunk as well while you're passing out at the back.
It's really pointless. 
Managers should be taking care if their talents. But in this rate they're
the ones causing harm. It's really sad and could be avoided if only they
would hire somebody to take the driver's seat.

I was at first skeptic with this BBF- curse-hullabaloo coz i was thinkin' some PR's just using their "minor" accidents to yunno come up with something to talk about and sumthin' to profitize with. BUT! after seeing Lee Min-ho tripped flat on his face on the said, biggest award show in Korea then with this yet another accident encountered by GHS...then someone must have really cast a spell-hex-or-whatever on them...or maybe just maybe the prods. not taking care of them..like hello they're still humans and not robots...well even robots wear off at times... haaaayyyyy

*sigh*

I am happy they are getting a rest, as it gives both me and them a break. Me - because of study, them because they really need it. However, I sincerely hope that's what they truly get - A REST, NO PROMOTIONS, NO ADS, NO AWARD SHOWS, NO INTERVIEWS, NO WORK RELATED CALLS OR E-MAILS, NO PARTIES (sorry guys & gals), JUST TOTAL ME ME /RECOVERY TIME AS IT IS MORE THAN WELL DESERVED. SLEEPING, EATING AND RELAXING THAT'S WHATS NEEDED, IT SHOULD HELP THEM PRODUCE A BETTER QUALITY SHOW INSTEAD OF ONE THAT'S RUSHED.

Though here may not necessarily be the forum for it, I have a question. can someone explain the Korean production system and why is it done that way. Granted I love Korean shows, but if what has happened to BBF cast and crew is an example of it, there has to be another and better way which is beneficial to all involved.

Really, Is traffic really that bad in Korea? The death rate by car accident must be outrageous.
However, I'm sad that it took a car accident for the crew to slow down a bit, but I can aleast understand the pressure they are under. I mean, I get antsy on Monday and Tuesday Night just waiting for the recap. I can't tell you how many times I check or refresh the site to see when it has been put up. If I feel that way about a summary of the episode, I can image how people feel about the actual episode. Even now, I am a little put out that I will only see one episode this week. I know, I am a horrible person, but I do hope for her speedy recover (not just for selfish reasons) and that this marks the end of any type of mishap.

BTW Javabeans, Thanks for the recaps. They are great. Please don't injure yourself to produce them (just kidding) :)

Love your "Insert snarky comment of your choice here," Javabeans

Yeah, you betcha I'm gonna leave my damn snarky comment: What, it takes the PDs a second recommendation from doctors that the actress has to get stitches on her mouth for her to take a break to pacify all the fans that are going a bit over the top crazy for a Kdrama? Yes, I love Kdramas and yes, I've been enjoying Boys Over Flowers as much as the next person. But I'm sure even fans are tittering mad over the fact that the PDs are cramming some BS about the welfare for their lead actress, when in the first place, you wanted her to get her arse back to work ASAP. Half your cast has been getting into accidents. Whether it's just the curse of the show or what not, I don't really see the accidents being a coincidence. Especially since you know most of these actors are on a extremely tight schedule and are rushing over to get to the set and elsewhere.

So yes, long snarky comment. But I feel better after ranting. Sorry, but this was fun. Thanks Javabeans!

When I read the title.. I admit, I was sad. And it made me realize how pathetic life has gotten when I actually look forward to Mondays and Tuesdays for BOF, and actually became SAD when Monday's episode will be cancelled...

Realization of Patheticism aside... Thank goodness the actress is going to get a break! Of course, I'm sure she'd rather not have her mouth stitched... I wonder how bad it was, and how meticulous the stitching must have been. She is an actress afterall with a pretty face. What would happen if she gets a stitch not done right! Hope she gets well soon!!!

It seems these actors/actresses are always getting hurt on set. This kinda stuff would never fly in America.. Korea needs to get their act together and treat these stars more better, sheesh

Although im sad i'll miss an episode this week, i suppose this is for the best. If she needs time off to rest/relax/heal, then she should deffinatly get it.
It makes me mad that so many korean stars(and people in general) dont wear seatbelts. i mean, omg do you understand the concept of gravity and force. Dur. I mean they are just asking to get hurt if they arent buckled up.
Its rather sad how they do film the show so close to air time, it makes me worry for the health of the actors. And the streak of accidents surrounding this show seem to be saying something.
Even though im a total addict of the show, i hope they take enough time to rest.
I know i personally wouldnt mind waiting a week or two so the cast/crew can slow it down a bit.

I don't think most of the cast members are getting the rest they need from this delay because aren't they instructed to show us around the set of BBF for the Monday special? They're actually working over-time.

Does this mean Episode 18 will air on Monday, the 9th? Or they're airing both episodes within this week, just on a different day than usual?

I don't even think that they've finished filming episode 17, which means that ep.17 will probably be somewhat confusing, and the scenes might not be coherent. I guess I shouldn't have high expectations for Tuesday.

Besides, I wouldn't mind if they delayed episode 17 to next week because that would mean one more week of BOF...Good luck to all the BOF cast...Hopefully, the managers will learn from this and actually hire responsible drivers. We better not hear about another accident or else...

Aye (#33), They do get a break because without this forced delay, they would have been scrambling to film 17 and 18 in time for this week's broadcasts. They are only airing 17, which pushes 18 to next week, meaning that they have a little breathing room for the immediate future, even if they do have to do some extra work to fill up the special.

Xiao Ai (#34), Episode 17 is completed and ready to air. (Supposedly.) Gu Hye-sun was driving back from the set after 17 wrapped when the accident occurred, so I think the timing really only affected 18. But I still hope this means they took a little extra time to make 17 better.... (Hey I can hope.)

So, Episode 17's on Tues? Is it only 1 Episode this week? Or will Episode 18 be delayed too? I don't want episode 18 next week cause if it is, Episode 24 would be on a Monday T~T

Edit: NOO D; OH EM GEEE... x-x; I hope they do like a 3 episode thing in one of the weeks. Cause I dont want the final episode to be on a monday. D;

Sorry, a 3-episode week isn't likely. Usually when drama production gets off by one episode like this, they do one of two things: (1) Air finale on the first day (Monday), then follow with a special. Coffee Prince and Hong Gil Dong did this. (2) Extend the series by an episode to round out the number. Que Sera Sera and Who Are You did this.

The second option is less likely because of contract issues with Kamio Yoko (not impossible -- they were still trying to get an extension before this accident -- just not probable).

Sanity (even if it's only reached because there is no other choice) finally reigns! All it took was a little more pain and suffering from the little train that never quits in her quest to be all things at all times. As much as I love the series, Goo Hye Sun means much more to me than Guem Jandi. This magic genie has a lot more tricks to perform for us, hopefully for a great many years to come. I'm counting on seeing her sweet face years from now just like all of the former "Goo Hye-Sun's" whose talents are still playing the ajummas, matriarchs, and powerful mature acting roles. (Although I don't look forward to Hye-Sun being some poor young daughter-in-law's wicked mother-in-law!)

The guys have been working hard, as well, but they are certainly better rested than our star and I'm sure that they are perfectly ok with squiring the always bubbly and beautiful Hyun Young around the set. I know I would be!!!

Get well soon, Hye-Sun.

i bet the manager was asleep at the wheel because he was too tired. and to have stitches in the mouth- ouch! i can imagine delivering lines would be extremely painful for GHS even if she does come back mid-week. =( I think the producers could still do very well to show behind the scenes shots and specials until she fully recovers. i wish producers didn't have actors filming episodes so close to the airtime. I hope they would extend her rest time. Like in this taiwanese drama- which was very promising in the beginning and is now tanking due to a sudden change in script and director- the 2nd male lead got really sick- pleural effusion- and his disappearance off the storyline was very jarring.

I guess I don't understand the way the Kdramas are filmed. Why don't they finish the drama before it's aired? Or film ahead to give much lead time? Maybe someone can explain the reason why it's done this way to me, please. I am sure there's a reason that I don't know. I know that they can change the storyline based on the audience's reaction, and that's one of the pros but that can't be the only reason.

Anyhow, it's a great drama and has a beautiful cast and they deserve some rest and need time to get well. I am with Sarah, it's the quality that's important and the fans deserve just that. So hopefully they will deliver a beautiful episode 17 and onward. It has been a while since I've been addicted to a Kdrama series (and no matter how old I get, and I am probably older than most HYD fans :-) I will forever be a loyal fan) and I am like most of you, look forward to Javabeans' recaps every Monday and Tuesday nights. So thank you Sarah for making the 'addicts' out of us. You write extremely well and I have been a fan of your blog for a couple of years now.

It would be nice if 구혜선's cut up face could serve as a warning about wearing seat belts, especially if she does some PSAs or something while her cuts are still there (even better if the cuts all heal completely), but I don't know if it'll work. Maybe for some it will be an object lesson, but others will ignore it — I'm a safe driver, I don't have accidents.

Back in the Sŏngsu Bridge collapse — in which a lot of people who fell actually survived — you could see that one (unbuckled) guy had bounced into his windshield, which is probably what killed him.

#42/ BBF is a rare one as far as filming schedule goes. I mean, most of kdramas are on tight schedule, but BBF is particualary bad becuase the scripts are not fully finished when they film it- they get next script as they go on. Also, their sets are literally all over the Korea(Jihoo's house, Junpyo's house, etc), so they have to travel a lot. Even right now, there are so many spoilers out there, and imagine if they finished the drama before it was aired. SPOILERS!!!! Also, dramas that were finished before they were aired, don't know why but they were never popular. Guess something to do with adjusting to audiences' feedback, but that was always the case. Also, BBF did film ahead (Macua and New caledonia scenes were all filmed ahead) ,and the production even pushed the airing date to January instead of late December, but who knows.

Goddess Koo~~~~ get well soon>_< I love you~

oh Also, as BBF gets popular, there are so many fans who are eager to see the filming with their own eyes, so so many fans are going to the filming site. On the day of accident, estimation of about 2000 fans visited, and they sure make alot of noise and stuff, so a lot of times, filming is delayed (sometimes even cancelled), and it;s one of many reasons why BBF is on such tight schedule and why viewers have to endure heavy background music in unnecessary parts (to subdue the background noise.)

i'm glad they are letting her rest....everyone from the cast seems to be injured in some way or another...

Kim Hyun Joong has fainted from exhaustion, has an ulcer (??), still has back pains from his car accident...

kim bum is recuperating from his toe...

lee min ho seems to have trouble with his leg because of the cold weather (you can notice a slight limp when he walks)...i felt so bad for him when he had to jump into an icy pool...that must have really HURT (i remember him asking for hot water to be poured on his right leg) T_T

and then add to that lack of sleep...yikes!

i definitely wont mind watching some NG's this monday since those are usually fun to watch. I just hope the managers will actually let the cast rest and not pack their schedules with other activities instead

anyway, i just had to say that i LOOOOOVE your black and white banner of Hyun Joong ^____^
