It made me smile when your wrote Morrissey and listen to the track..Seo Taiji – “Juliet” gives me more of a indie britt pop vibes if anything else, Stone Roses, Ride etc…

Regarding Seo Taiji Boys, if I remembered there was a duo group before with Seo Taiji. I was in South Korea in 93 and there was news about the other guys death, is ex girlfriend killed him…. perhaps I remembered wrong. Although I have a vivid memory I looked at one cover album and I believe Seo had a superman tshirt and I was dying to get one….

One time I was at a mediterranean restaurant, and they were playing the soundtrack to Stairway to Heaven. I’m dipping pitas in hummus and I’m visualizing Kwon Sang Woo in a tuxedo with a white piano on a beach, intoning “Perhaps he loved her more, but I did not love her less” (real line from the show!) I nearly shot hummus through my nose.

I just finished watching the Seo Taiji Symphony (If you havent seen them, you must watch! just youtube it… it was awesome.. especially Tic Toc *o*)

And why is it that every time I see him he never seems to age -_-

But Seo Taiji’s album is always different each time, which is why it can apeal to many people with different tastes, while at the same time, even if you like one album, because the next always seems to be different, you may not like his others (sometimes). Yet the thing that always stays the same in his music is his lyrics… they always have meaning in them.

Now why can’t we have more rockers out there in K-pop mainstream -_-

-oh and I went to a sushi restaurant and suddenly I started hearing Turbo’s black cat, than some other Korean songs. I was like *o* but it turns out one of the workers was Korean and flipped a Korean cd in XD

Heh, this song feels to me like an odd combination between, like, The Sea And Cake, John Linnell’s voice +2 octaves, and k-pop. I’m diggin’ it, though.

…oh, and a little Zwan, toward the end there. heh.

Hmm, I’m not sure if it was ever cool. Most of my (Korean American) friends found K-pop embarassing in high school. (Though that could just because my friends were all in love with Morrissey. ) But I started to notice changing attitudes in college. Seo Taji’s legacy is kinda . . . to me. I agree with both pro/con attitudes toward his music (and K-pop in general), but I guess if we didn’t have Elvis Presley doing impersonations of “dem negros”, rock music wouldn’t be where it is today. It had to start somewhere.

I don’t think youngsters today can appreciate what a groundbreaker Seo Taiji was. Fusion of so many different things. Just revolutionary and stylistic and changed forever in how popular music was perceived in Korea. All of a sudden, people could see a global product that was fun to listen to, slightly dangerous from a social perspective, and musically proficient.

All of a sudden, it was cool to listen to Korean pop music in the United States. And that meant that other Korean pop stars could do the same thing. And so it went that gyopo’s brought back Korean music to the States….

The precursors for Hallyu… much props to Seo Taiji. Genius. And that’s not just a hyperbolic statement. I think he WAS tested to be a genuis as well.

Btw KimGunMo’s ability to get star status in the US (even garnering some MTV award) was a direct result of Seo Taiji’s influence and bridge-building. I mean, I didn’t particularly like Seo Taiji’s foray into all the various genres of music he dabbled in, but there’s no question he should be given mad props by everyone.
