Lee Da-hae couples up with Baek Sung-hyun

Lee Da-hae is so pretty. She’s also five years older than actor Baek Sung-hyun (20), with whom she pairs up in a new music video, and while the age difference is pretty evident, they still look pretty good together.

The two actors are featured in kpop singer Kim Hyung-joong‘s rather hyped music video; the song is his new single “Today’s Fortune” [오늘의 운세]. The video itself is somewhat standard kpop ballad fare; the story is told post-breakup, with flashbacks that point to a happier time when the couple was in love. (Watch below.)

Lee Da-hae last acted in the large-scale MBC drama East of Eden, although she caused something of a stir when she dropped out early citing dissatisfaction with her character and was subsequently written out of the series. She spent some time abroad on vacation, and hasn’t yet picked a follow-up project. After the disappointing drama series Robbers and the cute but forgettable Hello Miss, I hope she picks a project better suited to her talents, which are many, but which have unfortunately been overshadowed by mediocre projects or characters.

Meanwhile, Baek Sung-hyun, a former child actor, is one of those up-and-comers to keep an eye on (in my opinion). He acted in dramas like Damo and Stairway to Heaven when he was in his early teens, and is now transitioning to more adult roles. He was more recently in the Kim Su-ro comedy film (alongside other up-and-comers Lee Min-ho and Park Bo-young) Our High School E.T., and will soon be seen on KBS’s new romantic comedy series Just Looking (aka That Fool aka the former Six Months), which stars Kim Ah-joong and Hwang Jung-min.

Hmm, Baek Sung Hyun is in Damo? Well that gives me yet another reason to watch it. I'm excited to see him play Kim Ah Joong's little brother soon.

Yes, Lee Da Hae needs to hurry up and choose her next project. I love her to death and it's a joy to watch her act. She was the best part about East of Eden IMO. Also, her English-speaking skills are stunning. I say she and Jung Ryeo Won do a drama together that takes place in the States. Preferably shot in the D.C. area.

I do like LDH. I just didn't like Robbers at all and don't even want to get into EoE.
Hello Miss is now re-telecasting by our local channel. I am rewatching it. Not as exciting as when I watched it the first time.

Nice stills. MV is ok.

I hope she chooses her projects carefully in future. All the best to her.

I really liked LDH in "My Girl," but that was about it. All her other dramas were very disappointing. She needs to redeem herself by choosing a character she can actually understand and portray. If she chooses another crappy project, I'm going to give up on her. She's already flying real low on my radar, so please LDH choose something good to work on and don't disappoint.

mv was ok, but forgettable.

Hye-rin was the ONLY character that kept me watching East of Eden. When she left, so did I.

Since she wants to change her image, I'm curious as to what type of role she'll pick next. I'll be waiting. ^_^

She was the best in "My Girl" and her "Hello Miss" role was cute, but like JB said, very forgettable.

However she was awesome in "Lotus Flower Fairy"

The story was really compelling as well.

Yeah, that video/song doesn't really do anything for me. But WOW, I always forget how pretty LDH is until I see her in something. I didn't even recognize her in the beginning of that video, even though I knew it was supposed to be her. And I've never seen BSH before, but he's a cutie. Another reason to watch 그 바보, I guess. :P

I hope LDH finds another (good) project soon.. I really enjoy watching her, but I don't want her to be the only reason I'm watching something.

Forever rooting for Lee Da Hae. Great in Lotus Flower Fairy. Amazing in Green Rose. Adorable in My Girl. I liked her in Robbers too.
She just really needs a good project and I think she's been really unlucky lately but I still think she has the greatest potential among the young actresses out there.

@ 8, fizzle

She speaks good English? I mean, I know she speaks it but I didn't know she had good pronunciation. The only time I heard it was when she sang 'I Love Rock And Roll' and to be honest, it was very heavily accented English.

I still stand by that Jung Ryeo Won has the best English I've heard so far and the actress from Fantasy Couple also speaks pretty well, I could only hear a slight accent.

LDH has one of the best "I'm sad and my heart is torn apart" faces that I've seen.

There's this scene in My Girl where Joo Yurin and her dad are at the airport and going away and Joo Yurin picks up a card that asks where they are going to go, and she falls to the ground sobbing, and Joo Yurin's dad starts immediately saying, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry" (just a great scene by the dad, very reactive-acting versus LDH and I wish there was more reactive acting - btw, NOT TO START any drama wars, but I saw Soulmate's actors and I didn't see much reactive acting, more of rehearsed acting which made for kind of snappy snappy clever clever dialogue but not much situational acting - which is strange, right, because you'd think that those actors would be versed in that kind of thing).

Anyhoo, LDH as Joo Yurin, in that airport scene, just dumped my heart into a blender and pressed frappe.

Almost every romantic drama has its tear-jerker moments where tears are shed at love lost or torn apart, but few have scenes where you sort of want to get off the sofa and grab a bunch of tissues and start wiping the TV screen. LOL. Seriously though, I was a little panicky when watching LDH in that scene, I kinda wanted to DO something, but I was in my home, and she was at the airport....what could I do to help her? Man, if I only had Gong Chan's hand phone number, I could have called him and told him where she was! Yes, yes, I know it would be expensive since it would be an international call and what if Gong Chan didn't believe me, but it's better than just sitting there and not doing anything!!! Hehe.

Someone posted a youtube clip at d-addicts a while back of Lee Da Hae speaking in English on the phone to her friend. She had a bit of an Australian accent (she went to school there) and I thought she sounded really cute! I'll try and see if I can find that clip.

The best English I've heard so far is most definitely from Kim Eugene. She had a few English lines in 'Wonderful Life' but it's from her interviews where it sounds the best.

I knew she was decent from watching the video Kobe is talking about, but in East of Eden her pronunciation is fantastic.

Here's a clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1062VFrbgto

Seeing her improvement in English was the most exciting part of the drama. :)

LOL, Javabeans, I can understand what you're saying. The way she said "second" really bothered me, but hey, there are plenty of people who are worse at English than she is.

LDH, though, really needs to pick up a good project that will do her some justice. I will not even digress onto the East of Eden disappointment, which that video reminded me of. Hello Miss seemed to be one of those dramas that she picked up immediately after her My Girl project, which made her immensely popular, and one where her character seemed to be trapped into a Yoorin spiral - the horrible fate of spinning into the same characters in the same sorts of silly dramas.

I want to see her in a hellish good drama. It's so sad that such a wonderful actress [one of the few I almost follow religiously] has been set off by bad projects - Robbers was disappointing, too.

@35, JB.

Are you referring to the youtube clip? I was born and raised here and my English is basically no better than LDH's....

Yes, LDH sports a noticeable accent (and kinda slurs the word 'sister' but I think her pronunciation of "second" was actually fine??? it was like she was emphasizing it, not slurring it), but you know what? Not many Americans speak American English without an accent.

You got the folks down in the deep South whose pronunciations can be really really hard to understand, Texas and Louisiana for sure, and even Boston, Chicago or Minnesota. And don't get me started on So-Cal American. The only people who speak American English with no accents are folks from Connecticut and maybe network news broadcasters who have to keep their accents as neutral as possible.

The other people in the car (the sister and the dude), I honestly couldn't understand their English even after repeated attempts, and I needed to read the Korean subtitles to figure out exactly what they were saying in English. LOL! Now that was kind of embarassing. Their English pronunciation is about as good as my Korean pronunciation, and none of us should therefore be doing any talking on camera.

@Kobe,

Yup; it's pretty close to a "first" language for her, as with Lee Ji Ah. Come to think of it, her English is better than Leslie's. :D When I went to the Korean Music Festival, she and Brian were MCs for it, and she spoke English half the time.

Here's a clip of her in the Philippines. From 0:38-0:52, she speaks in English at a conference. She speaks English now with kind of a smoky purr too . . . but then you kinda know that already. ;)

She has an Australian accent. How is that embarrassing? Are you guys making fun of the Australian accent? I'm from Perth and I sound like that. You guys do realize that to other English speaking countries, Americans have accents too, right?

@22: What an exaggeration, and not to mention mean. Sure, her head isn't as small as Kim Tae-hee's or Han Ye-seul's, but calling it massive is like calling Selma Hayek fat just because she's not a size 0.

"i guess this one’s a matter of opinion because yikes, i thought that was painfully embarrassing."

I admit she didn't sound too good there but to find that "embarassing" is a bit harsh I think. She probably only went to school in Australia for a few years and it's not like she was born or raised in an English speaking country like some of us here.

Anyway, I found the clip I was talking about earlier:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfU8iPYVWdA
(It was actually fizzle who posted it first at DA lol)

I thought her English (3:01) was pretty good here, but her Mandarin (3:47) certainly needs work :)

@belleza

Lee Ji Ah speaks English fluently?? I didn't know that...clips plz :P

Yeah Eugene is my favorite Korean actress when it comes to English speaking ability (and also because she's so pretty & likeable), and that clip from the Phillippines shows why!

Here's one from an interview in Taiwan: (starts speaking English from 2:15)

not to mention, Lee Da Hae's role in East of Eden is someone who is born and raised in Korea, she wasn't supposed to sound American unlike the two people behind her who were SUPPOSED to be raised in the US. But what a CONTRAST.

ever heard of the rest of that show's cast speak English?

anyway, here is LDH latest when she spoke English... it was for the Model Awards.

Hmm I guess it really is a matter of opinion then. Well for what it's worth, I thought she was pretty impressive for someone who was born and raised in Korea.

About Kim Eugene...yeah when I heard her English in Wonderful Life I thought her voice was being dubbed at first - it was so good o_O. Thanks for those clips, I'd forgotten how cute she was.

I've seen Sydney in Love and I agree - they really do make a hot couple. The film itself was...interesting. I had no idea what they were talking about, but I remember really liking the background music.

Actually from the East of Eden crew, the best English comes from Dennis O'Neil and Yun Jung Hoon (Lee Dong Wook.)

Dennis was awesome; he had lines like "she is my Queen!!" (whatever you say, Mr. Lion King! :D ) and uhhh that's all I remember.

Yun Jung Hoon doesn't get to show off his skills until the very last episode. But when you hear his English, with 2 words, you can hear the "Welcome to the OC, bitch!!" in his accent. And, well, that suddenly makes Lee Dong Wook really hot. "My old man is Shin Tae Hwan! DUDE!!" > "Hyun!! Don-ga!! Hyun!! Don-ga!!: :D
