When you're depressed as a result of severe clinical depression, bipolar disorder and other mental/psychiatric disorders, you lose most if not all of your interests; you feel hopeless, worthless, desolate, helpless, guilty; all you do is cry and/or stay in bed all day and night; you cannot sleep at all even with the aid of sleeping pills, painkillers and/or anti-anxiety; you're anxious; you practically become a hermit (hikikomori); all you think about is death and suicide no matter how hard you try to not think about anything; and negative thoughts just keep blazing in and out of your head you'd swear you could hear them.

I know. I attempted suicide twice last year. Died briefly on my last attempt but was resuscitated. Was in the hospital for a few days for psychiatric evaluation. Was put on a mood stabilizer, 3 antidepressants and an anti/anxiety. Was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, treatment resistant depression and social anxiety disorder. And I'm required to see a psychiatrist and a therapist once a week. And I'll be participating in various programmes to help me deal with my severe depression and suicidal ideation.

A lot of people suffer from depression. But most suffer from mild depression which is normal (at least you know you're human). People with moderate to severe depression are usually put on meds or require therapy. Some become physically debilitated that they're not able to do anything (lifting a finger to put away your plate is a daunting task) let alone participate in any activity. Some people have very effective coping mechanisms and some have poor coping skills. Depression is different for every person suffering with it.

@layo
Dont let what airs fool you, behind the korean industry is more than just bright fun and compassion
This may also relate to netizens and crazy fans
Its definetly not pleasing to have a group of people reach and hurt you

Depression is definetly a much extended condition than stress it leaves you with many symptoms and negative fantasies
Many i believe, regrets being famous sometimes

Plus korean industry doesn't exactly make their stars rich and famous
Mainly american main stream, korean's media and companies like YG, JYP, SM entertainment spend less than what they get from their celebrities

I feel its truely sad she hanged herself in the closet
True she was in depression
But to be lonely and so "locked from the outside world" to close yourself in your closet... i feel she definetly was limited by depression which is a death no one should experience

RIP Woo Seung-yeon

this is all so annoying , why are all these actresses dying due to stress/suicide.
it doesnt make any sense, you would have thought they got it all. the thing that maddens me the most is a lot of people would do anything to get to where they are, and no matter what the circumstances suicide/death shouldnt be an option. i hate them all for that. i have never visited korea but i would love to due to my interest in all the wonderful dramas and the celebrities. but how can i keep thinking about it if they keep breaking my heart like this, how can i think of loving more of these drama if devastating news of these stars kept poping up on the internet.

korea entertainment industry take care of your celebrities................ it is so annoying

As a highschool student, I have to say that suicide has become very normal-and thought of as the best option for all that stress etc. People talk about it all the time and threaten to commit it as well....society has become on sad place people

@ Jasmin -
Aside from the pressures associated with being Korean/Korean-American, depression is often viewed as something the person can snap out of if s/he puts her mind to it, and - "What do they have to be depressed about?"
What many fail to realize is that depression is not just a mental illness (which carries its own huge stigma)...it's a physical disease. A person cannot merely 'will' himself out of it.

@ marcel - "i definitely think there is a stigma associated with depression for asians..it’s unfortunate because compassion, knowledge and understanding of the condition are needed but so lacking…"
I completely agree. I'm glad that you have a support network of compassionate and understanding people in your life. Aja, aja!
