Are you eager to see Won Bin‘s return project (finally!), Mother [마더]? The film, directed by The Host‘s Bong Joon-ho, has announced its official release date: May 28.
The film co-stars the wonderful Kim Hye-ja (Mom’s Dead Upset) in the role of the titular mother, who fights to save her 28-year-old mentally challenged son when he is wrongly accused of murder. Director Bong has reportedly been preparing this project for the past four years, even before filming The Host, ever since finishing on the 2003 film Memories of Murder.
See the official trailer:
Won Bin hasn’t acted in a film since 2004′s My Brother; he’s taken his time to resume his acting career following his army discharge two years ago.
The film has garnered enough interest to have sold to Japan and France when it had only completed 20% of its filming, and is expected to be officially invited to Cannes Film Festival (along with another strong contender, the soon-to-be-released vampire thriller from Park Chan-wook, Thirst).

Each time I see this trailer I want to see the movie so much more than the time before. I think this might be the best film of 2009 out of Korea… really can’t wait for this.
Ahhh…’tis about time!
I have never watched any of WonBin’s movies, but this trailer by itself gives me the chills…. definitely going to watch it!!!
Wow..the trailer sure gives me the chill .. It looks good
Ooh, looks good. I’ve only seen Won Bin in Autumn Tale (really awkward acting IMO), but I don’t think this one will disappoint, ‘specially with Kim Hye-ja on his side.
Korean films always sound so compelling. I wonder why I never enjoy watching them.
can’t wait till it comes out subbed whenever that will be!!
love love love won bin~ it will be interesting to see him play such a different role from the one he did in autumn in my heart. so glad he’s making a comeback though. it’s been forever.
That’s going to be oh so great!
yet to see Won Bin in any movie/series……heard Autumn is such a tearjerker (which I hate) and don’t have a happy ending (which I love) that’s why can’t have an interest to watch it though I am very curious about Won Bin….. I guess just have to wait for this movie to see his acting…..
WOW
that trailer looks amazing!!
its definitley worth the hype
WON BIN!!!
The intensity in Kim Hye Ja’s eyes… it gives me the chills!
As awesome as this movie looks, I’ll pass. I’m too chicken to watch a movie like this one. It looks scary. >_<
oooh im so excited! it looks so good!
Holy crap! That looks intense! Will be quite something to see…
It’s time for Won Bin to come back on screen..Hope through this movie, he can show us his great talent..Bravo Won Bin..
AWESOME..Won Bin’s cool to choose and do this movie. Fabulous cast.
Kim Hye Ja has such a presense on screen. My gosh-gives me chills
Lets get ready for the box of tissues.
Considering that the director has been planning this movie for a long time, he’s probably had a lot of time in editing and revising this. I cant wait for how it turned out.
I have HIGH expectations for this movie. High.
Wonbin (I love the role he chose for his comeback) + Kim Hye Ja + plot = when the movie comes out, you can find me at the theaters (with my mom because this seems like a totally awesome movie to watch with my mom… bonding moments~).
ooh, is that lee young-ah i see?! what a pleasant surprise! er looks like she’s the one getting murdered, though
I’m excited. ^^
btw, is it just me or… does Won Bin look like KimuTaku in the first pic?
I am soo excited to see this! Bong Joon Ho’s segment in “Tokyo!” was by far my favorite. And I agree with Alvina
I’d like to be excited, but I needed to get myself out of the “tired of looking at depressed WB” mode first in order to actually enjoy what looks like an incredibly well-acted movie. Please don’t get me wrong. I recognize it would be a good movie, acting wise. I just need to re-focus first and forget (or remember? LOL) that WB is actually alive and acting. Or just alive.
To soften the my not-so-positive comment of WB, he looks strikingly similar to my older brother (I think I mentioned it somewhere before), the nose and the eyes especially. So I do have a soft spot for him well tucked within my ‘wittle’ heart. I am probably just so stuck with his acting in Autumn Tale I never moved on. So yeah, maybe it’s my fault. Peace
@fizzle:
Try to watch “Daisy”. Maybe it will change your mind. I loved that movie. So painfully beautiful. Angst to the very end.
@purpleteddybear
agree..daisy is also one of my all time fave korean movie…
….hope its not a sad ending……
It’s either the mother or the son will die in the end, hmmm or will the director choose a happy ending in this bitter/sad film…. Oh well, I love Won Bin and hope that his acting is really good based on what I’ve read so far….
I also love Daisy..hihihi^^
Thanks Dramabeans for the recommendation.
Hmmm….interesting, gripping….and I’d love to see Won Bin act again. This movie will be in my must-watch list.
i mean like finally!!!
Seems like an intense film.
Woo Bin is acting as someone who’s educationally sub-normal ??
Wow, I can already tell this is a going to be a very good movie. The acting is superb!
the trailer so intersting. Won Bin looks awsome
first time i’m seeing KHJ in this kind of role. goodness, she’s so good!!! no wonder she won best actress or something in one of the awards in Korea. I forgot what.
Bong Joon Ho is my Anton Chekov of films. I love them both. Won Bin is easy to love too. It will be so nice to see him walk the red carpet at Cannes.
Daisy left me underwhelmed. The actors were great especially the men but…..Maybe it was the Hong Kong director. It just didn’t work for me.
omg this looks good..
at first i thought it would simply be some sad story but.. looks like it’s more than that ^^
I’ve been waiting for 4 years for this guy! I cant wait to see the movie. I can tell it will be great. He’s such a great actor too.
this looks great…can’t wait to see Woo Bin back in action =)
i wanna cry just from watching the trailer T_T
but so glad he’s back. it’s been too long!
Thanks javabeans!
@sydney, i had the same feeling too.
I saw a clip of Bong Joon Ho visiting the set of Thirst to show support. So, it’s nice to know that there’s no competition going on between the best Directors of Korea.
Very wise choice of Won Bin to pick this movie as his comeback, and thanks to BJH to cast him.
Kim Hye Ja as Best Actress of the Year, no doubt!
Nice to see Jin Goo in this movie too!
interesting trailer. can’t wait to watch it!
The Mother Trailer is stunning. Kim Hye Ja is in powerhouse form here, and Won Bin exudes a childlike purity there.
@Alvina,
“does Won Bin look like KimuTaku in the first pic?”
The resemblance is definitely there. It’s even more here in the following 1999 Jump clip depicting a mini-triangle between Won Bin (with long hair!), Kim Sun Ah, and Chae Rim. BTW, thank you mzpakipot for this clip!
