Writer jumps from spy comedy to fusion historical

Who’s seen this movie? Is it as entertaining as it seems? (And do Kang Ji-hwan and Kim Haneul have fabulous chemistry like they do in my imagination (and the previews)?)

In any case, the new action-spy rom-com Level 7 Civil Servant [7급 공무원], which also goes by the English title My Girlfriend is an Agent, released to strong buzz, and drew in more than 465,000 to take first place in the box office for its first week. The scriptwriter is striking while the iron’s hot and has announced his follow-up project to be a drama series.

Writer Chun Sung-il also scripted the 2008 Park Yong-woo and Lee Bo-young period heist comedy Once Upon a Time, and he’ll next be penning a 24-episode KBS fusion sageuk called Chuno or 추노 (追奴). If that doesn’t grab you, perhaps you’ll be interested to know that the PD in charge will be Kwak Jung-hwan, who also did the summer horror series Hometown of Legends and the taut political fusion historical drama Conspiracy in the Court.

Chuno follows the story of a runaway slave in Joseon times and the slave hunter who pursues him, with a woman who completes the love triangle. With the writer’s flair for dialogue and the director’s ability to create darkness and suspense, this is one I’ll be looking out for.

Sounds interesting :) I'll keep a watch out for Chuno ^^ Especially since it's set to a decent length of 24 episodes... When I first read it was a sageuk drama I kinda went "Not again!", but 24 episodes are totally OK!

I've only seen bits and pieces of this film (trailer + little clips by TV shows doing promos with actor interviews). But I am a little concerned about the use of special effects / stunt-work done with wires. I think I saw a little bit of that in the clips and I hope they do a good job.

Special effects are really about diminishing returns. You can throw a million dollars into trying to create better effects, but not get anywhere near a million dollars worth of improvement. But even a little bit of extra effort can make a big difference in how it looks.

Personally, I sort of dislike wire-work because they sort of defy the rules of physics and gravity (thus defying my sense of reality). Maybe in a kung-fu film, the martial arts masters are supposed to be able to defy gravity (okay, I accept that premise), but does that also hold true for government agents in the 21st century?

Then again, the clips were fun and I hope Kim Haneul got enough physical training in, to bust a few moves.

Looks promising but I hope they will add something else extra (great chemistry, comedic timing, Korean-ness) since the plot is not that original.

Ditto for me.

I liked Hometown of Legends and Conspiracy in the Court too. I'm still waiting for Hometown of Legends to come out though. Hometown of Legends wasn't that popular with the netizens, but for me, it was an interesting series of psychological/horror drama.

And I don't even watch horror genres, but that's because the Hollywood version is usually about the gore factor. Korean/Japanese genres are much more layered and thrilling.

Can't wait to watch both ^o^

I'm happy that the movie got first place. Since the drama part of ent. has been getting better compared to last year, I hope that movies will do better this year than the previous years.

They really tired me out in 90 Days Falling In Love. I don't think I could stand to watch them together for like, another 3 years or something.

And speaking of wire work, I actually quite like it. I love when people fly because in my head and in my dreams I can fly too! I just haven't physically mastered it yet. I watch shows and movies to get away from reality. I deal with that all day. I want to suspend belief. I want that fantasy. It's a welcome break.

I saw this movie and definitely enjoyed it. My Korean level is okay, so I'm sure I missed somethings here and there, but Kang Ji-Hwan was great. I read the article about how he was allowed to try new things and I gotta say he has some great comedic scenes in here. Watching him as the rookie, bumbling his way around, made the movie.
Initially I was afraid that it would be too similar to Mr. and Mrs. Smith since it was supposedly modeled after it, but I have to say they did a nice job making it their own movie. The action scenes were a little hoaxy in the beginning and the end, but the overall movie is definitely worth seeing.
