Bae Soo-bin brightens up Brilliant Legacy

SBS’s weekend drama Brilliant Legacy continues to perform well. No, I’m still not following it — I just don’t think it’s for me — but by all accounts it’s zipping along nicely.

The leads are the fresh-faced and cute Lee Seung-gi and Han Hyo-joo; but although he’s not the lead character, actor Bae Soo-bin is attracting a lot of attention for his portrayal of his character Jun-sae. Below is a recent interview with the 32-year-old (also of dramas Painter of the Wind, Jumong) about his current role.

The response to Brilliant Legacy is very good.

I have a lot of affection for this drama. I look forward to it, and every time I go to the film set, I feel a positive energy. Because I get such a good feeling from viewers toward the role I’m playing, I enjoy every day.

Because the drama has 26 episodes, I think the writer is letting the plot unfold quickly. When I look at the scripts at first, even I feel it’s rather hectic. [Laughs] These days, I’ve gotten used to the speed of developments. The actors are all doing a good job, so it makes it fun for me. Although I already know what happens, when I watch the broadcasts, I’m entertained. This is the first time I’ve watched my own drama again on the internet. Haha.

People really love the character of Park Jun-sae.

I hope Jun-sae can receive even more love and support in the future. No, I’d like for him to steal all the hearts of the women in Korea. [Laughs] Whether or not the female viewers are married , I’d like to embody the ideal man whom all women would like to marry or date.

Jun-sae has an image of a caregiver, but what about in reality?

He’s a character who appeals to women’s fantasies. Even as a man myself, I think it would be nice if there was really a guy like Jun-sae who existed in real life. [He thinks intently for a moment] He has some similarities with me, but there are differences too. [Laughs] I can’t study or fight as well as Jun-sae, but I think his nature is similar to mine. [Laughs] On a basic level, Jun-sae is bright person. I tend to be influenced by my roles, and after doing this drama, I think my own personality has brightened.

The focus of the drama is on Lee Seung-gi.

I think that’s natural, since Seung-gi has a higher public profile than me. Of course, I think that as I keep going in my acting career, at some point I’ll receive the focus of attention and carry the responsibility. Until that day comes, I’ll have to prepare as much as possible.

Last year, you took on a serious character in the role of Jung-jo in SBS’s Painter of the Wind.

In a sageuk, I’m acting as a real-life historical figure, so I have to convey the role properly. When I was working on Painter of the Wind, I kept the a spirit of respect for the man as I acted. I did my best to act without harming his image.

However, maybe it’s because this is a contemporary drama, but I’ve lightened up. I deliver my dialogue in an upbeat tone because I want to spread the happiness to the viewers. [Laughs] I’d like for viewers to say that they feel better when they see me come onscreen.

Do you have your own particular criteria for choosing projects?

First, I read the script. When I see the cast, I can determine whether I’ll be able to do this or not. If I think I can create an appealing character, I’m the type who makes up my mind and dives right in. But I’m not someone who insists stubbornly that I absolutely have to take on a certain role. I just have to jump into the project and be fully invested.

I’ll continue doing that in my acting career in the future. Although a drama’s story gets told to others through me, I don’t feel like I should overly exert myself to present a packaged image. That doesn’t suit me. When acting, I have to immerse myself into a role and transform, but I can’t do that for my everyday life.

Lee Seung Gi is kinda ugly, isn't he? How come people like him so much. He's not much of a singe either... The second lead looks ways better than him.

It dun matter how old an actor is, talent dun discriminate - let alone looks. When you shine, you shine. Bae Soo-Bin deserves his present recognition and much more in the years to come. Short hair and clean look suit him so well. Soo-bin ssi, hwaeting!!

I dun wanna start comparing BL with other K-Dramas but the two leads are rather two common characters that most likely resemble the two leads in Meteor Garden/ Boys Over Flower. People seem to forget that in All About Eve, the good mature supportive man played by Jang dong Gun wins (instead of a random so-so guy who is bad-tempered, selfish and childish).

ps: thumbs up to Han Hyo Joo. Significant change over the years since Spring Waltz.

Love Sunny Bae! I think he is a great actor - he is so good that i didnt realise he was the same guy in Jumong and Painter of the wind ! Just found him vaguely familiar....n decided to google him! He is not old!!!! Gimme a real man in his 30s anytime - than all those young upstarts! My only concern is why he is not more popular in Korea - would like to see him in lead roles!!!

Never caught on to Brilliant Legacy since i dont like the 2 leads n story line is predictable...i only caught scenes that have BSB in them! Hope producers and writers are reading all these comments so they realise how much appeal BSB has! All the best Sunny Bae!!

I think there is room for both Bae Soo-bin and Lee Seung-gi! It's these two male actors who have kept me coming back episode after episode to watch "Brilliant Legacy" and I'm a guy so that's saying a lot!!! In fact the series hasn't finished airing here in the U.S. on the local Korean channel and at this point because I've never liked the character of Seung-mi and the writing for Eun-sung's character has gone south towards the end and she's become annoying that I'm hoping Hwan and Joon-se hook-up and walk happily ever after into the sunset...lol!!!

I feel very disconcerted b/c the 'perfect guy' did not get Eun Sung....
Very saddened by this. I really want to see another ending or remake that puts them together! Hwan is so bad-tempered after all, and Eun won't be happy with him.
Either way, I feel the drama is isn't resolved b/c the 'perfect guy' is left heartbroken, and me with him... :'(
does anybody feel this way?!?!

Isn't bae soo bin somewhat selfish to say that he wants to steal the hearts of all women in Korea?! Indeed, even he somewhat admits it, that no perfect man as portrayed exists in the real world. THen why does he keep on idealizing such an intangibly lovable figure to break my heart when I see him crying and getting sorted out!!
Yes, Bae Soo Bin is adorable and cute! But the more he is that way, the more I cry for him, for his situation and even the fact that I cannot be there for him. how funny.
I usually reflect on a drama after I watch it. So my heart is still tense and sad a week after the drama. I can't get my mind off of Bae Soo Bin's deplorable and pitiable situation! It hurts me so much inside as a sensitive woman!!
To conclude my message, I'm basically saying: Bae Soo Bin! Stop being cute and perfect in the drama! The more I love the figure, the harder my real life gets! I cannot seem to live for a single day without getting depressed because of your loveliness!
I want to say I love the man portrayed as Jun Se.

What a great actor he is! He's someone I will continue to watch in the future. He has this manly expression but yet you want to fall in love with him, protect him, and make him yours forever. He has lovely eyes and perfect lips. Keep up the good work Bae Soo-Bin! Your Mom should be so proud of you. I am glad she encouraged you to become an actor. Well done job!

The thing is Brilliant Legacy at first I thought would be like Stairway to Heaven with the following elements present:

Wicked stepmother- We have Kim Mi Sook as the wicked stepmother Baek Sung Hee who seems kindly but is in reality a very wicked woman. She hid her evil longer than Tae Mira (acted by Lee Hwi Hyang) was able to. I mean, Eun Sung had no idea she was evil until the supposed "death" of her father. I really wished Lee Hwi Hyang was the wicked stepmother here but Baek Sung Hee does a good job.

A deceived father- Go Eun Pyo has no idea how evil Baek Sung Hee is. I kind of liked how he really hit Baek Sung Hee.

Wicked stepsister- Moon Chae Ri acts as Yoo Seung Mi who is a much calmer version of the wicked stepsister Han Yoori (acted by Kim Tae Hee) in Stairway to Heaven. She like Han Yoori wants to get the leading guy of the series to get money. Unlike Han Yoori, Yoo Seung Mi doesn't show her true colors until the later part. Yoo Seung Mi was a direct form of evil.

The leading guy- Lee Seung Gi's character of Sun Woo Hwan is a jerk version of the overly kind Cha Song Joo. I have to admit that Jun Se is more like Cha Song Joo but he's the other guy. Hmmm the script has two types of Cha Song Joos. Hwan because he's rich and Jun Se because he's kind.

Fortunately enough, the whole show was not a weepy drama. It had sad moments yes but the thing is, the whole show itself was enjoyable like how Hwan was roughing himself up to hide his true self, how much longer it took for mom and Jung to mature while Hwan matures earlier in the series, how many things change and so on.

He's such a gorgeous man, beautiful eyes and smile!

I really love his acting, he's very natural. And I'm amazed at his range of acting, he can pull off complex characters convincing and with different charisma, such as Sayong in Jumong, the villain in Emperor of the sea, the smart and charming king of painter of the wind or the manipulating avenger in Temptation of an Angel. His screen presence is so strong that he can even outshine lead actors in minor roles!
Combined with his handsome looks there's no way that people get past this talented actor. I'm so happy that he finally got the recognition he deserved long ago.

Junse may appear too perfect or bland, but Bae Su Bin managed to add layers, that's why this character is one of the most popular second fiddle in k-drama world.
