Friday again. Thank goodness for that, right?

SONG OF THE DAY

Ryuichi Sakamoto – “The Lang Song – Music for Artelligent City (One Winter Day remix).” I was making new ringtones for my cell this week, and remembered how awesome this song is, and now I have the most awesome ringtone(s). [ Download ]

JB,

Do you have to pay money to make ringtones for your cell, do you need to go to a special website or something? I remember my friend sending me mp3 of the Final Fantasy 7 victory song (the song is called Fanfare), but he said that if I wanted to make it into a ringtone, I would have to pay some fee...

It depends on your phone. Some phones can make a ringtone odd of an mp3 for you.

Really depends on what phone you have. Some phones have proprietary software, others are more open.

@ JB

So give me a quick update. What are you watching, what are you skimming, what are you dropping/dropped. For some reason my head's been spinning too much to keep up

I am slowly watching city hall and story of a man, but I am suckered into dang gae geum. I heard many great things about it but since it was an old k drama I wasn't too excited; plus it had like 54 episodes. Good thing I did though. Dang gae geum is killer. The story, the characters, the plot, the scenery, etc are freaken fantastic! I am only on episode 8 but I am loving it!

My computer was out of commission for a couple of days this week. I was searching for Allegro Cantabile by Suemitsu & The Suemith, when I got to a bogus site. My machine got infected! #$^%&!!! Norton was able to fix it, but for a hundred a pop! Owel, I'm just glad it's up and running now, and that I get to read Dramabeans on a bigger screen as opposed to my cellphone's.

I just edited an mp3 and uploaded it to my phone.

@cosmopolite, I'm watching:
Story of a Man - yay!
Return of Iljimae - it's already ended, but I'm catching up
Strike Love - hoping to catch up before new eps air this weekend
That Fool - not that motivated to continue but may stick around for another week
Queen of Housewives - made it to 8 episodes, put the series on hold till i have more time

City Hall - dropped. People keep saying it's getting better, and it makes me want to try, but I remember how much I hated Lovers, On Air, and this writer.
Cinderella Man - I actually read about the latest development and wondered if I should peek in again. But I probably won't.
Brilliant Legacy - caught the first episode, thought it was kinda cute but not that interesting. Felt like a daily drama with a good budget and pretty but average actors (although Bae Soo-bin is yum)

Daniel Henney was ok...mostly because he didn't have that many lines. But the one scene where he did speak a fair amount was um...interesting.

javabeans, just wondering... I know you enjoy blogging about kdramas and all that (and I do appreciate your work!), but do you ever get tired of it and feel like taking a long break from it? Especially the drama recaps, which must be tiring to do. What keeps you going all this while? Hope you're having a great Friday!

javabeans, thank you for introducing me to my first ryuichi sakamoto song. of course i've always heard about him and probably watched a movie with his score (though I didn't consciously know it was his score) and i did dl like 3 of his albums last month but didn't get around to unzipping and listening to them. love the song you posted, it's beautiful.

@Samsooki
you can create your own ringtones from mp3s at phonezoo.com. it's free, you get to choose about 30 secs of your mp3 and then text it to yourself.

kitty, i told myself when i started blogging more seriously that i would quit the day it felt more burden than enjoyment. i love blogging here but it's not my whole life and i need to know i can let it go, theoretically at least. that said, i do get tired and sometimes feel chained to the keyboard. stupid comments sometimes make me want to walk away (no, i'm not going to be PC and say all comments are wonderful), but that's not too common -- usually that's fixed by physically walking away and getting outside for a while.

City Hall is good. very different from the show Lovers at least at this point of time. I found the first few episodes rather slow but funny. Looking forward for Episode 7, i think things will pick up a little more interesting relationship wise but duller politics-wise. overall i think its a light heart drama. javabean should take time off from serious drama and relax a little w city hall just for brainless laughters. why not? =)

i was waiting for your comment about City Hall..Yeah, don't force yourself to watch it if you don't like the writer. From watching too many kdramas and movies before, I have my share of K-actresses and K-actors that I hate to watch again, no matter how good the drama or movie is....I watched Lovers in Paris last week, I thought it was a cute romantic drama, but to compare the writing, City Hall has a better script so far..and Cha Seung-won and Kim Sun-ah have an amazing chemistry!

I actually like On Air, Lovers writer. I like her woman characters. Her weakness is she doesn't know how to sew up her dramas. They always fall apart in the end. I Ioved the first half of Lovers and hated the rest. On Air was better. Didn't watch Lovers in Paris....I don't find the leading man attractive. Also it's too old. I don't care for old dramas.....they dress so funny.
I might give City Hall a try out of respect for the leading lady.....MNKSS still remains a sentimental fav......the first 5 episodes were brilliant and that Hyun Bin was easy on the eye.

This is the kind of movie that ... kills me.

I know that I go all nuts for the daily drama Temptation of Wife (I don't even know how to begin to rate this drama, it is a species all its own, and it doesn't get compared to anything else because I've never seen anything like it ever, but it is like a drug, and if you get into it, there is no getting out - I am rather surprised that so few of you are into this drama, maybe you all "just say no to drugs" or something like that), but really, I like good movies and I think this movie will be a great one, if you haven't seen it yet, maybe go and search for it.

Yes to sassy vampires and to masked ninjas and to world's greatest swordsman and/or pop star assassins, but a HUGE YES, for films like this.

@21 and 22, just a quick shout out to mzpakipot. You're watching City Hall? :) I might start soon. I'm currently on Brilliant Legacy (you probably guessed why). BL is pure candy fluff but the actors are charming. The stepmom Kim Mi-sook is wonderfully pragmatic and heartless. Not getting Lee Seung-gi's character however - needs major rehabilitation for behavioral issues.

i edit my own ringtones as well. just use free audio editing software like audacity and save them as 128k or lower so won't take up much space. but your phone must be able to connect to the computer with the phone software to transfer in the files. but maybe in america, things work differently...

--

i didn't post about this last time, cause this is about kpop and not others but talking bout interesting things to do...i think it differs in degrees. cause what is interesting to me maybe different. but...

i didn't really do anything interesting this week, other than driving to a new destination for the first time alone. and i didn't get lost! :) but that's not really interesting.

but the really interesting one could be i broke my own "no concerts" rule and went for wang lee-hom's Music Man concert on 2nd may...reason? academic research. maybe that's not interesting but weird. hehehe.

--

and i'm strangely drawn to girls generation and super junior. finding suju's "it's you" interesting. SM, you!

@23, Sonam:

Did she write Lovers in Prague? cause though that is not really great (the love triangle was like ?!), i like it. very much. maybe just because i love Jeon Do-yeon in that drama.

@cecee
I too have started Dae Jang Geum and it is really good. I've been meaning to watch it for awhile but never got around to until recently. I'm actually curious to see how the kdrama version of Kekkon Dekinai Otoko turns out b/c now I know who the main lead is since he's in DJG (and he is pretty attractive---though I can't comment much on his acting yet)

I started watching Air City while I was waiting for Dramafever to upload new eps of DJG. And I can't believe I never saw anything with Lee Jung-jae until now. Air City itself isn't that exciting, but Lee Jung-jae, beautiful men (the guy who plays Min-wook is pretty cute), and the chemistry b/t LJJ and CJW is keeping me entertained enough to continue. Now I'm really interested in checking out Feelings (especially after your post this week) Oh and speaking of Lee Jung-jae....does anybody know if subtitles for Sandglass are available? I've always wanted to see it, but never found subs...

@25 samsooki Last week you awakened my curiosity for "temptation of wife" and I've been on a hunt since to find a way to watch it. Since it's a very long series with lots of episodes, no regular subbing teams seem interested in doing it, and that probably explains why so few people are addicted to it, at least the non-Korean speaking folks. I found it with English subs last sunday, and since that fateful day, I have no life whatsoever(not that I used to have one before with all the drama-watching lol). I mean I agree, this thing is like a drug. The first time you try it and you become a junkie. It's insane the amount of hatred , betrayal, madness and malice you can find in this, the first 30 episodes are pure torture: how can she put up with all this, and how can a scriptwriter with a sane mind imagine all of this? But still, you get through so much emotions: surprise, anger, sadness, exasperation, joy... It's clearly worth the ride, it acts like a catharsis. I spent 29 episodes shouting at my screen: Eun Jae, grow some bone!Fight back! And I was actually relieved when she finally "drowned" in the sea , because I couldn't wait to see the revenge part lol. I love the aunt and the sister-in-law who manage to remain human decent beings and loathe the weak husband, the heartless mother and of course Ae-Ri.
Samsooki, we should shout to the world how deliciously insane this series is^^
@ dramabeans: thanks for advising us "story of a man", I really enjoy it, it's a pity for the ratings^^
I'll add my own personal recommendation: the daily kbs drama "the road home" is a nice watch^^

Yay Friday!

My performance for my classical Indian dance class is on the 22nd. We just finished choreographing/learning the first dance, and we finished the second dance yesterday, so now we just need to practice practice practice. I'm looking forward to finally seeing my costume, too. I know the general design, and I know it's supposed to be purple (my favourite colour :3), but I don't know how it's going to look on me. Also, I'm still a little uncoordinated on a couple sections of the dance (especially if it involves leaping or suddenly switching to a completely different movement), so I need to work on that.

I'm really liking Strike Love. I'm not generally a fan of baseball (so..boring.. *twitch*), but since this seems to be mostly about the people, I'm finding it pretty interesting. Plus, the main guy is adorably scruffy, like a mutt. I want to ruffle his kachi hair and root for him to become a baseball legend. Also, Ma Dong-tak is a JERK.

Also, sometimes I really wish I was awesome enough to do stuff like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3J52soNoNoI
Cheers to the guys at Korean Air!

My friends and I HAVE been working on learning Gee, though.. We finished tweaking it the other day, then added another friend (for a total of 5 instead of 4), so we had to change it up a little again to accommodate the extra person. It looks really good, though. We're going to learn Michael Jackson's Thriller dance next. Then..I don't know. Whatever we feel like learning, I guess. :P

Time to go finish writing my papers!

@ 29 Taohua - Subs ARE available for Sandglass! The raws are on soompi, and the subs are on D-addicts. ^^

@Sere and A.,
FYI, I wasn't able to watch anything this week (except for an episode of Story of a Man) and won't be able to get to that delicious Japanese yummy goodness that is Atashinchi no Danshi until late tonight, so I should have a commentary on Ep 4 until sometime tomorrow. Subs for Ep 5 are not out yet so Ep 4 is all I have.

Happy Spring!

Hey JB! I really enjoy your blog and have wondered at times how you manage to keep it going. For me it's like a drug and I've been attempting to wean myself off of it. Not too successfully as you can see. What with watching dramas and reading this blog my time is frittered away. So here's my plan of action:
1. Limit drama viewing to evenings between 8.00 and 11pm[NOT until the wee hrs of the next day]
2.Watch one drama at a time.
3. View this blog only on Fri mornings while doing the laundry!
4. Catch up in a weeks worth of articles and not read ALL the comments!
Wish me luck, it's going to be tough!
Dryer just buzzed so gotta go.
Happy Blogging!

@30, Mumuchan -

"since that fateful day, I have no life whatsoever(not that I used to have one before with all the drama-watching lol). I mean I agree, this thing is like a drug. The first time you try it and you become a junkie."

LOL. For me, I randomly came across it as I was going to bed, on TV, and at first I was like, "pfffff, no way. soooooo unrealistic."

But then the next night, I said to myself, "ok, I JUST want to see what happened, then I'll stop watching this. I'll stop for good."

After that, I found myself watching late into the nights, with the sound low and shielding the TV from my sleeping wife so as to not wake her. And for a few days, that was enough Temptation of Wife to keep me going.

Then, when daily fixes proved not enough, I had to sneak out of bed and find the videos online, so that I could watch more. Then, I really couldn't stop, and I stayed up all night, because I was soooo close (only about 20 episodes to finish) and there was no way in hell I could sleep anyway, with Eunjae in danger, and Gyobin and Gyobin's mom and Aeri all needing to get their asses handed to them and slapped around. I had to support Eun Jae with all my strength.

"It’s clearly worth the ride, it acts like a catharsis. I spent 29 episodes shouting at my screen: Eun Jae, grow some bone!Fight back! And I was actually relieved when she finally “drowned” in the sea , because I couldn’t wait to see the revenge part lol. I love the aunt and the sister-in-law who manage to remain human decent beings and loathe the weak husband, the heartless mother and of course Ae-Ri."

When you get to the end of the drama series, you may or may not feel differently about various characters. As for me, I feel like I've lived through Eun Jae's life, and so, I am now stronger and wiser now because of it. I won't let anyone like Gyobin ruin my life. To quote Aeri's favorite line, "Anyone does that to me, I will NEVER let them go..."

*****

"Samsooki, we should shout to the world how deliciously insane this series is^^"

No kidding. But JB is apparently immune or has the willpower to say "no, I will not go there" I can't imagine the amount of willpower it would take for a person to watch Temptation of Wife, and then NOT go nuts about it....

Currently watching Shining Inheritance (which I like if a little unremarkable) and Atashinchi no Danshi (good but really silly) nowif only they'd sub these two as fast other dramas.

And Im not a huge fan of Kim Sun ah so up till now I haven't watched City Hall but if it is as good as some people claim it to be I think I'll give it a try.

I SO want to watch both. I'm waiting for my drama-partner who's a busy bee with exams and family so it'll take a while before I actually get to these dramas, but man, I cannot wait. Plus, I read this blog and I'm all flaily and I want to watch even more.

Good luck with the ringtones. I'm so lucky my mobile is a piece of vintage technology (LOL) so I can't actually add ringtones of my own, thus I go with the totally horrifying ones that are already installed.

@Samsooki
I don't remember if I told you or not, but I started Super Rookie. Hee! I didn't know Eric was that good! you know, I'm like 7 eps in and I still don't know who I'm supposed to ship? Kang Ho/Mi-ok or Bong-sam/Mi-ok? On one hand, Kang Ho is sweet and Bong-sam is behaving like an ass, on the other, I can understand Bong-sam's inner turmoil. I'm SO torn. *facepalm* I'm inclined to think I should go with Kang Ho?

Re: treeless mountain. Whoa, that looks amazing!

@33 Nom Kitteh and A.
I've watched ALL 4 eps, aren't I good? You know, when I started watching the first ep and Shinzo showed up on screen in all his Prince Charming glorious costume, I thought, hmm, ok, so this is going to be one of *those* doramas and was a bit fidgety. It started cracktastic, but it's surprisingly touching. More so than I expected.

Guys, let me know when you're ready to comment. I'll keep watching

Good Friday everyone......Yay Java Beans !!!!!!! Just seriously do what you need to do. My college age daughter reads your blog faithfully also. Your recaps for Slingshot are vital on the Soompi thread......the subbing takes a while because I am sure it is difficult.

Cinderella Man I had only watched up until episode 5 and then had quit. When I watched the newest one last night in the raw I realized it had improved a bunch and caught up till episode 7 subbed...So I will watch it now. Pretty darn good

OK my complaint today is Queen of Housewives and I am in the minority on the other boards. In fact I wrote my last comment the other day. What kind of message does this send about women> It was funny for the most part until they went to extennd it. All of a sudden you have the brain vein anyurism and the husband loves her again....Yeah right JA and OH are so not in love with each other as well as TB and SH. JA terrorizes OH and is very materialistic as well as plain old mean. OH comes off as a handsome idiot and a whimp. All the women grovel to the men and the VP wives. What the heck? Of course the story will end that all the couples will stay together in matrimony hell for the sake of the kids and as well as the "family." Total crap....In the real endingf OH would take SH and run away together and lead a "quiet" non fish wife life. JH and BS would live in a climb the latter marriage and pretend it is ok. JA SHOULD go sit on the park bench and reflect then go make some bags and learn how to stand on her own two feet...then maybe TB will swoop in and make her behave and love her (if she was lucky...yummy TB). None of the women in this drama have redeeming characters. If this was a US drama it would end close to the way I wrote the ending...but because it is K drama it will end with all them together in a park and all of them pregnant with their husbands,babies,,,,Gag In the other posts they say that JA groveled and sacrificed 7 years for her husband....OK I have been married 31 years and 7 years to me is a drop in the bucket. I will read the ending before I watch it this time....If it ends the way most people think it will then I won't bother. That is why Slingshot and dramas like this now are better in my opinion. OK I am done ranting..Thanks for reading this

No, I haven't seen the movie. But when I read the synopsis of Treeless Mountain, it reminded me of Nobody Knows – mom abandoning the kids, never to see her again.

Nobody Knows was a really sad movie, and what's worse is, the real life story was more ghastly than the film.

@39, blkrose -

For me, I think it has to do with the 'new' -ness of the genre. I've never seen anything like it, and so I caught the full force of the addiction, and given my obsessive personality ANYWAY, and my current love of all things k-drama, I had no defense. Plus, I got into the series about half-way in, so I missed most of the awful things that happened to Eunjae, and so when I started watching it was Eunjae fighting back and Aeri being evil and Gyobin being evil and Gyobin's mom being evil, and Eunjae kicking ass and Aeri fighting back and Gyobin being a tool and Eunjae and Aeri going back and forth and revenge revenge revenge... aaaaaaaaahhhhh too much revenge...... *wipe drool*

So if you haven't guessed, Temptation of Wife is a revenge drama. Every single episode, nuclear bombs are thrown around, and every episode, just awful things happen and you just want to step in there and start slapping everybody.

Maybe if you are an old hand at revenge dramas, then Temptation of Wife will just be another drama, but for me, it was just... unbelievable. LOL.

@40 Sere -

I LOVE Super Rookie! Han Ga In is a little wooden, but that's okay. This is an Eric Mun drama, and he and Oh Ji Ho do a great job. And I LOVED the last half of the last episode. We cheered! LOL. Please keep me up to date on it. If I don't remember something, I'll just pop in the DVD and see where you are. In the beginning, I was all for Eric Mun, but then I sort of went towards Oh Ji Ho, but then later, I was sort of like, "they both should get her." LOL.

@41, MEIKO**** ^-^

Maybe Treeless Mountain will have a happy ending!

My hope is that it will have a happy ending.

"In the beginning, I was all for Eric Mun, but then I sort of went towards Oh Ji Ho, but then later, I was sort of like, “they both should get her.” LOL."

Heh, I kind of figured the drama was headed in that direction. I've been a little suspicious of Bong-sam at first, but then I thought, why does he hate Kang ho so much? And in ep 7 the truth was revealed! I was like, "OMG poor guy! *pets him* " You know? Plus, he might have dumped Mi-ok and he's been quite the jerk with her, but it's clear he still has feelings for her. I don't know. I really don't know! LOL

@everybody

Guys, I want to buy an mp3 player (apparently, I'm the only person who still doesn't have one) and I'm trying to decide which one to get. Question: do you guys watch subbed dramas/movies on your players? And if so, which one do you own? Despite my deep hatred for iTunes I was thinking of going with an iPod (classic? iTouch? I really like the pricey iTouch which has a great screen) or a Creative, but if you have suggestions, please do share. I'd ask my friends who all have players, but they don't watch subbed stuff and I don't know who else to ask.

@Sere: I have an iPod classic and I watched subbed dramas on it. If the videos are good quality then it's great even though you'd think the screen would be too small. I would get an iPod touch if I could though...but it's a litle pricey for me :)

Hehe, you petting Oh Ji Ho.... I am suspicious whether you are petting him because of Bong Sam's rough childhood or because he is built like a 6'1" chiseled statue....

As for an mp3 player, I recently got the 120GB iPod classic. I have about 3,000 songs on it, and I have filled about 10%. No, I've not watched any dramas / movies, although a colleague at work put the movie, Ironman on his 120GB iPod classic. I am not much of an iTunes person, but iTunes is by far the easiest way to collect and sort and add/subtract mp3s from your library. My wife has the 16B iPhone, and she likes it but I don't like it at all (I am a blackberry guy). Neither of us watch any movies or dramas or videos on our iPod / iPhone, even though we could I guess, but why do it?

Hi JB...hope you'll be having a wonderful weekend and get in some re-energizing moments. One of my friends has a very successful kdrama site but sometimes feels that she has created a monster and it is the tail wagging the dog. She does enjoy her work but does not feel that she can walk away from it that easily. Your blog is still my absolute favorite; your writing is insightful, delightful and thoughtful. And your commenters are also wonderful and a reflection of your intelligence and substance.

Samsooki...although my TV is tuned into Temptation of Wife, I only intermittently pay attention to the drama. For me, the plot is trite. The characters,especially the screaming banshee mother-in-law, the totally wimpy, immoral and stupid(sorry) son, the comedic relief of the challenged sister, the brazen and abrasive mistress and the bellowing and always falling into a head/neck/aneurysm looking spasm father-in-law are common elements in too many dramas that I have watched over the past 10 years. I am probably jaded but find no shared interest with so many who love the revengeful path that the almost drowned Eun Jae has taken.

@23 Sonam...I loved "Lovers in Paris" and found Park Shin Yang terribly attractive, not necessarily physically attractive, but how he brought out the strength and endearing characteristics of his character. That was my first experience with PSY and I have watched him ever since. I find him to be as attractive as many of the studly cuties that I also appreciate.

Have a wonderful weekend.....JB and all your readers/commenters.

@Linz
Thanks! That's helpful. I was really worried about the smaller screen.

@Samsooki
"even though we could I guess, but why do it?"
I totally understand. Thing is, I spend way too much time at hospitals, waiting and waiting and waiting and yes, music would be great and an improvement from, you know, nothing to do beside reading, but if I could watch stuff on my player every now and then, I'd be happier. So I was thinking, I'll get a player, why not get one that lets me watch stuff? ;)

"I am suspicious whether you are petting him because of Bong Sam’s rough childhood or because he is built like a 6′1″ chiseled statue"
LOL I swear it's for his childhood
