I just love the way the boy has matching hair ribbons. Always. Snatched from the brink of death? Grey ribbon to match grey monk outfit, no problem. Heehee.

OK, have to 'fess up. This a beautifully done series. But I must be a shallow creature, because it's kinda slow for me. I find myself distracted and doing other stuff on my computer. I know I should pay full attention to the lyrical bits. (The silly comical bits I have no compunction watching with only half an eye.) But, oh dear, I needs me pace.

I'm enjoying RoI immensely. I almost gave up after the first few slow episodes, thank god I pressed on, it kept getting better and better.

I actually wonder why Wang Hwengbo is kept on the drama. What purpose does he serve these days other than comic relief. I'm not sure if he would play a big role in future episodes, but I just wonder why he's still there despite not doing any bigger mischiefs. Still, I have to admit that I enjoy his scenes, he's pretty hilarious.

I have watched many Korean Dramas, but very few have “great” impact on me (I mean so good to the extent that I loss sleep over it). As I recall the last time I suffered sleepless night was watching Bae Yong Joon’s “The Legend” (2007) also called “Tai Wong Si Shen Ji”. The middle part of the drama is excellent, but the beginning and ending are less satisfactory, especially Bae suffered a debilitating injury while filming the drama. The ending is a bit rushed and hard to understand, leaving me a sense of incompleteness and slight disappointment.

This time around, as I watch “Return of Iljimae”, I find myself, once again, suffering sleepless- night. The story captivates me. The exciting plot, the well-written script, the beautiful scenery, music, and real-to-life acting keep me up at night. Overall, MBC’s version of Iljimae is a great drama series that is nicely paced from beginning to the end. Every scene has its purpose, and every character stands vividly. Even without a big name star, the Return of Iljimae outshines all other Kdrama that I have seen so far (I am a very picky person when it comes to drama). Compares to SBS’s Iljimae, I think this ROI is a much, much better version, both in script and in acting.

Talking of Iljimae, I have to admit that the 21 years old actor, Jung IL Woo, has stunned me with his charisma. Something about him (maybe his eyes) really gets me. There is a striking quality in him that makes his portrayal of Iljimae very memorable and believable. Often the camera stays on Jung Il Woo’s face for a great length of time, which I don’t mind at all (it’s rather a treat to stare at such beautiful face up-close), and capture his innermost emotions that can’t be expressed with words. I find the only other person, who has such essence in front of the camera is Bae Yong Joon.

Anyway, to me, Jung has captured the spirit of Iljimae. From time to time, I have this illusion that he really is Iljimae, the dynamic hero: witty, brave, and kind-hearted, who cares deeply about the weak, and not a young actor tries to play one on screen.

Finally, Dear Javabeans,

Can you please continue with the recap of “Return of Iljimae”? Although I have already watched the drama, I really enjoy reading your interpretation of the story (also the pictures). I have been waiting more than two weeks for the rest of the episode recaps. The long waiting is really hard to bear.

Thank you so much. Your hard work is deep appreciated.
