For anyone in the NY/NJ/PA area, look into this:
http://subwaycinemanews.com/archives/412#comments
I’m going. So Ji Sub and Gong Hyo Jin will be there to present their movies and they get an award too. Tickets are only $13.50. I already bought mine. I probably won’t understand a word. I need a Korean translator, lol.
But this will be my first experience with Korean media/celebrity. Someone go with me!
I’m also completely hooked on Shining Inheritance. To the point where I used viikii for the first time ever. And started looking for spoilers.
I haven’t done that since my Veronica Mars days.
@1, mishane
I’m completely jealous. One more reason I’d really love to live in NYC instead of this crappy little town. If I were anywhere near there I’d go with you in a heartbeat! I hope you post all the details after the event!
@1, mishane -
My my…. tempting tempting tempting….
At the IFC Center in NYC:
Monday 6/22
1:25p Antique Bakery – Joo Ji Hoon not in attendance, apparently he’s busy.
7:15p Ip Man – the amazing Donnie Yen as the master who taught Bruce Lee the legendary kung fu of wing chun, with Sammo Hung choreography. Multiple Hong Kong awards winner, including best picture. IFC Center quote: “it is physically impossible for this movie to be any more awesome.” LOL!
Tuesday 6/23
9:30p Rough Cut – So Ji-Sub in attendance
Wednesday 6/24
6:30p Rough Cut – So Ji-Sub and Kong Hyo-jin
9:15p Crush and Blush – Kong Hyo-Jin in attendance
…hmmm.. must convince Samsooki wife to go with…
Wow…..NY is steaming….I wish Boston was equally fun in terms of K-Celebs and the like ^.^
@ 1 Mishane.
Lucky, lucky you…..any chance of a showing in London ?
Please get right to the front, then take pics to send to JB for an article, with a full and detailed report….
Pretty please. lol.
I’m going to try to take pictures, but I’ve never been to one of these before so I don’t know if we’re allowed.
Also, I’m pretty sure that most everything is going to be in Korean, so I won’t understand anything. Oh well, I can stare at SJS!
I agree with mishane, Shining inheritance while started out predictable has turned in to a drama honestly could go anywhere at this point and I for one can’t wait. Im always waiting for the videos in serious anticipation, and I love discussing the drama, we all love to bitch about Seungmi and the evil stepmother, Im sure I wasn’t the only one who went “Omg” at the preview, Seungimi’s lies are just getting ridiculous at this point.
I did not like the brothers development tho, the whole thing was abit silly.
@ mishane… ur so lucky!!! So JiSub in attendance? i’m tempted to fly out just to stalk him. (if only my husband would allow me to stalk my stars).
YAY! the weekend is here. i can’t wait to go home and watch the most recent performance of “Hate You” by 2PM. i’m totally obsessed with those boys right now. can’t get my fill.
my daughter’s re-watching Save the Last Dance and i’ve just re-realized why Ji Sung is freakin HOT!!! his lips are so kissable!!! and then when he’s got lip gloss on, he’s so sexy!
Wow, yeah, now I sort of want to go see Rough Cut and I don’t know that the movie itself sounds like my sort of thing. But mmm So Ji Sub <3
i’m only on ep 7 of shining inheritance and i absolutely love it. can’t wait to watch more. still TEAM BSB as the main guy has yet to be anything other than a whiny spoiled brat. i have this urge to kick his sister’s ass at this point too… and though Seungmi is currently not irritating me cuz i feel she’s just caught up in all her mom’s lies and deception, I don’t doubt I’ll have the urge to kick her ass sometime soon haha.
@4 Samsooki “Monday 6/22
1:25p Antique Bakery – Joo Ji Hoon not in attendance, apparently he’s busy.” HAHA!! nice one
in other news – hooray for Friday! it has been a long ass week…
@ Mishane
Rough Cut showing AND So Ji Sub in attendance!!!!!
O-M-F-G am so jealous (turning a shade of Kermit as I type this)! One of my fav movies of the year featuring two of my newly discovered fav actors who are awesomely talented: KJH (of course!) and SJS. AND the screenings are with SJS present too. *faints*.
If there was a way I could zip to the other side of the world to attend I would. Can I be there in spirit to drool at, oops I mean see , SJS too? Pretty please?
Can you imagine the situation if BOTH leads were to attend? (Samsooki would have to be kept far far far away then….like somewhere in Antarctica perhaps?! Maybe that is why KJH is not going?
)
Currently watching ‘Cain and Abel’ – and yep So Ji Sub is pretty awesome. It’s not MISA-standard (hmm yet??) but definitely hooked. Had read some people’s opinions about C and A (thanks *waves*) and was not sure if I could/would watch it all the way through. But really the way SJS was so adorable in episode 1 – well hell I had to watch the rest.
Back to the NYAFF
Word of advice to anyone thinking of catching ‘Empress and the Warriors’. If this is the same Leon Lai/Kelly Chen (disaster of a) movie I think it is: Save your money! Watching grass grow is more enjoyable and much better use of your time.
@ mishane – OMG, if only I didn’t live 10 hours away! *whines* SJS~~~~
–
It’s FRIDAY! One more day until the new Brilliant Legacy episode! *dances* I’m so addicted to this show, OMG.
–
So, I know I’m late to this particular party, but who here is watching Atashinchi no Danshi? I (finally) finished Ryuusei no Kizuna last week (I dropped it during finals week and just now got around to picking it back up), fell in love with Kaname Jun, realized he was in Atashinchi no Danshi, and my fangirl heart freaked and said “MUST DOWNLOAD!” So I did, and I’ve now watched all available episodes. Perhaps predictably, Sho is definitely my favourite brother, but Takeru comes pretty close. And I have to say all of those sauna scenes with Fuu just make my heart go dokidoki. So. Hot. OMG.
–
And to my fellow Americans: Did anyone watch Kurosawa night on TCM last night? I found out about it 45 minutes into Seven Samurai, and stayed glued to the couch until the end of Kagemusha at around 2:30. I’d forgotten how gorgeous Kagemusha was–that one scene with the army marching along the top of the hill, with the light from the sunset streaming between them and the soldiers waiting at the bottom of the hill musing about whether Lord Shingen really is dead or not.. So beautifully shot, GUH. Kurosawa = god. Even my mother was intrigued, and she’s generally not interested in Asian things.
I’m on the Shining Inheritance drug, too. It started off really slow for me, but now I’m counting down the days until it airs each week. I’m crossing my fingers that this weekend Hwan will stop crying, and start changing his life–it’s about time buddy. It’s a REALLY good thing school has finished, because I’m spending way too much time over at Soompi.
@Kender
I haven’t started watching Atashinichi no Danshi, but it’s definitely on my list. I kind of hate myself for it, but I lurve Horita Maki. Everything she does is adorable.
re: Shining Inheritance
I LOVED episode 12 and how concerned Hwan was over Eun Soo. And I LOVE that he’s all, ‘Why do you hate me?’ and ‘Does this mean that we’re enemies?’. Man, he’s so into her, and he’s like such a little boy wondering why she still hates him.
@9 lb_tmi – i feel ya on the 2PM craze. i just watched their mnet performance of “Hate You” last night… and holay those boys are a fun and good lookin bunch. Though probably not their strongest performance (the choreography was kind of unimpressive, especially for a group that boasts such strong dancers) they sounded pretty decent and debuted yet a new look. I always look forward to what they put out cuz they’re such an entertaining group.
Atashinchi no Danshi is a show that just keeps on getting better, its light hearted fun but it can be quite touching at times, Im liking it.
omg at the rate these comments are coming up, I am never gonna get back to work ahah… but…
@13 Kender – i love Atashinchi no Danshi. I started watching it because of Mukai Osamu (Sho) after I saw him in Meichan no Shitsuji and I am hooooked. It’s quirky and fun and I love the chemistry Horikita Maki has with all the brothers, esp Sho
I am definately a Shosato fan
And yes Fuu is hot hot hot, but to me he doesn’t have the charm of Sho
@15 mishane – so hwan is redeeming himself already eh? good to hear – can’t wait to watch it!!
1. With respect to the IFC Center movies and So Ji Sub – It is about 50% likely that we will go to at least one of the days. But I also want to see Ip Man, which means that we have to go at least twice. Regarding Ip Man – if I could come back as a martial arts fighter, I would come back as Donnie Yen. Fluidity and power personified. Then people would say, it is physically impossible to be more awesome than Sifu Samsooki.
Heh, if KJH does make a surprise appearance to Rough Cut, and we get to meet him, you can bet that we’ll be bringing him down to k-town for soju and sullang tang. We’ll do our own drinking interview and then we’ll draw up adoption papers.
2. This week, we switched from Cablevision (3 korean channels – all screwed up with none of the titles matching what’s actually showing – “SBS News” = Temptation of Wife, etc.) to AT&T U-Verse.
U-Verse carries only 1 korean channel – but it’s MBC America! And that means that we get to watch real time Korean dramas! YAY!
…but… this week, apparently, all we are getting is ….Cinderella Man…. lol. We have the first few episodes recorded now, but I am underwhelmed after watching the first two episodes. It IS watchable, but I can honestly say I am indifferent between, say, re-watching anything I own on DVD or watching a new episode of Cinderella Man. It’s not bad but I am just not compelled to watch it. And Kwon Sang Woo is not the right person to play the role.
@lovenyc52–2PM’s first performance was not very impressive. choreography was really simple? plain? i can’t find another word to describe it. the song is pretty awesome tho.. except for the autotoning stuff. their live singing needs some work for this one, but i’m POSITIVE they’ll nail it. i COMPLETELY fell for the dorks since watching Idol Army. and i really dislike the hair on Junsu and Junho. and Khun’s outfit is like WT?? Taec, Wooyoung and even maknae are HOT tho.
question… where can i watch Shining Inheritance w/ subs? does dramafever have it?
Shining Inheritance is on viikii with subs. I think it’s under a different name though? Beautiful Life or something like that. Search ‘Shining Inheritance/Brilliant Legacy’.
@mishane–thanks! i’ll have to check it out. ‘preciate it!
I’m watching Atashinchino Danshi. It’s nothing serious like A story of man(which I love what a creative story telling, I haven’t been able to guess what would happen next)so far… ended up watching the ep.20 without subtitles. even donated $4.00 to Viikii and I might start subbing Jap. dramas if they are not legal or medical stories with all the technical stuff) but is a good entertainment with all the cute boys. And yes, I love the sauna scenes! I guess it’s just one more episode? or two more on next Tuesday… I’m amused and impressed by Japanese TV producers coming up with such original plots like this one,Bokuwa pet and Love shuffle and so on. Ryuseino kizuna , I really loved it because Higasgino Shogo’s style is known to be really dark and takes you to to the underworld(to me, that’s what it feels like)… But the the TV version was carried on with much more humorous lighter mood. Actually because of that, my sister ended up not watching it(in Japan). Different expectations… I’m waiting for paperback to come out to read the original. My brother’s a big fun of the writer and he’s been giving me the books after hoe’s done, so I’ve been patiently waiting. After leaving japan 30 years ago, I’m starting to really appriciating Asian TV programs and thing. Thanks to the computer, it’s possible without having TV! Anyway, I’ll be going downunder for 6 days on business and have to get going. Thanks, Javabeans for this site, I check it everyday.
@19 lb_tmi – BL is probably on mysoju.com, or you can get the softsubs from D-addicts.
Ugh, my computer rebooted itself last night (stupid Windows updates), so I didn’t get to finish downloading Triple. It also interrupted my 12-hour upload, which I’ve now restarted. *le sigh*
I miss school internet. Everything is so much faster on campus. ㅠ_ㅠ Maybe I should just start following my mother to work so I can steal her campus’ internet. Hrmm, there’s a thought.
@Samsooki – Hey, at least you GET Korean channels. They aren’t even available down here in my state.
Oh, I’m enjoying Shinning inheritance as well, It’s a bit redendant but good fun. another reason I’ve contributed to Viikii.
@ Kender
And to my fellow Americans: Did anyone watch Kurosawa night on TCM last night?
I did! *raising hand*
But, I only got to watch Seven Samurai, and I was in and out of the room (I was baking). My boyfriend however sat through it – including intermission. He loves that film, he has watched it numerous times. He also likes the american version.
hello everyone!
@mishane: LUCKY! make sure you’re protected I”m sure there will be a lot of screaming fans of SJS. Won’t hurt to scream too. ^^
@samsooki, i was really surprise to see you browsing at (soompi) City Hall thread, I hope you will give it a couple of shots to see how we are so in love with this drama. You’re a celebrity now! hehe
OMG! City Hall is getting better and better every episode! Love their HOT kissing scene inside the car! I said this to my friend……err….come to think of it, i shouldn’t say it here. It’s PG-15! haha!!
Happy Weekend Everyone!
For the people that DO watch Shining Inheritance, will you tell me why you like it?
I’ve been trying to figure out why I’m so hooked. It’s not my type at all (I HATE rich boy/poor girl storyline as well as evil parent storyline and evil secondary girl storyline and nice secondary male storyline). In other words, I hate cliche’d storylines.
Also, the acting isn’t amazing. Han Hyo Joo is good in the funny scenes and in the crying scenes, but in the in-between, normal serious scenes, she feels a bit awkward. Sometimes I feel she only has one expression (head tilted to the side, questioning look in her eyes). I still think she looks adorable and she adds little touches to the Eun Soo character that makes Eun Soo special (but again, only funny little touches).
But for some reason I’m hooked. I don’t understand it. I really don’t! Why??!!?
@Samsooki:
Ip Man is one of the best Chinese action movie I’ve watched for a LOOOONG time. The way Donnie Yen carried the character to perfection. But the English title if pronounced English-ly. My friends and I kid among ourselves, calling it I.P. Man. At first, I thought it was a new action figure movie.
Cinderella Man gets more digestible in Epi 3 onwards. I found Epi 1 & 2 meh. I got a little more interested in the later episodes. The problem, imo, isn’t KSW. It’s Yoona. I watch this because of KSW really. It’s good to see him in a non-crying role after that mess in Bad Love.
–
BTW, got a question:
Can anyone please tell me any Korean songs suitable to be sung in weddings? K-ballads has usually really sad lyrics. Preferably not trot though.
Thanks!
Anyone watching Queen Seon duk?! OMG. The kid actor playing duk man is so great! I keep waiting impatiently for the next episode. It is just that good!
Thanks Samsooki for the heads up on the drama. I have been watching it on viikii. I am on episode 6 now. It is so suspenseful!
@28,mishane-
“I’ve been trying to figure out why I’m so hooked. It’s not my type at all (I HATE rich boy/poor girl storyline as well as evil parent storyline and evil secondary girl storyline and nice secondary male storyline). In other words, I hate cliche’d storylines.”
I think it all depends on how it is done. A well done script, with superb writing and editing, and good performances and directing, with a kick-butt sound track, and I’ll be hooked as if it were the very first time I saw the rich boy / poor girl / snobby rich parent / evil rich secondary girl who dumped rich boy but wants him and back now and just won’t let go / nice secondary male who stays on the sidelines and cries by himself story line.
Good writing + good directing + good acting + good soundtrack = fueling of my addiction. hehe.
Arghhhh, too much work to do today, I can’t hang out here as much as I want!
Ip Man – really good movie! I wish I could have seen it in a theater as opposed to my laptop. First introduction to Donnie Yen – very impressed!
Story of a Man – I too watched the last ep unsubbed because I was (SOB) completely spoiled on the ending. I can’t even start ranting about that or I’ll never stop.
Still waiting on the subbed version to rewatch but the minute this comes out on DVD, I’ll be buying it. Absolutely amazing drama, I just can’t say enough good things about it.
Happy Friday y’all.
@27 mzpakipot , Love City Hall!
They’ve been teasing us, making us wait for these 2 to kiss. So here they are, in the car like a couple of teens, tensions building you know he’s going to kiss her and then he just gives her a peck on the lips! While I’m thinking “all that buildup just for that” wham PG15 censored kiss! So be warned all you parents out there if you’re watching City Hall make sure all kids under 15 are out of the room! Just kidding! I think it’s funny that they felt that kiss was worth the PG15 rating.
Happy viewing everyone!
@ mzpakipot and other City Hallers
City Hall is getting better and better indeed! The kiss scene (I mean the long one) is the best I’ve seen in any Korea drama – not so much about the real action but the witty dialogues and romantic staging that precede the quick peck and the long one. And the intrique of the storyline doesn’t stop. At the beginning, I thought it would be quite a predictable story but it keeps surprising me, especially in how CSW’s high mighty character got swept away though his admiration of and respect for KSA’s MR. I really enjoy seeing MR’s journey from a nobody to a somebody who is now having a profound effect on the aleady-somebody JG. Still don’t know how the story will pan out for the remaining 6 episodes.
And what can I say about KSA and CSW….. both are just sensational. KSA’s performance here is several notches up from MNIKSS and close to perfect with loads of charisma. You honestly will vote for her to be your own mayor. CSW: seriously the sexiest lead. His eyes and expression are priceless – he can swift from one mode to another in a split second. The two of them just make their characters the best possible couple one can hope for in a drama.
Right now, I cannot and will not be able to watch other dramas due to the CH fever. Three more weeks and then I will be a free person ….. with Triple in sight. I will be so sad to see CH finish – never this hooked since Coffee Prince.
@ mishane
I too am hooked on Shining Inheritance and can’t work out why either. Funny, that. As you’ve pointed out, we all hate the cliched plots and the acting isn’t stellar, but there’s a certain sort of something that makes me tune in every weekend and stalk out on viikii for the subs. Oh well, sometimes things are best left unexplained and should just be enjoyed for pure entertainment value.
Have downloaded Triple and am eager to watch it this weekend, work permitting.
On another note, have been cooking Korean food furiously over the past 2 weeks. Don’t know why. Have been inspired by the many Korean recipe websites that I’ve come across. In the end, Korean cooking isn’t so hard.
Work has been crazy these past few weeks. So much so that I’ve been confusing colleagues in different countries! Aish! Too many Europeans with strong English/American accents. They all start to sound the same!
Hope everyone has a great weekend. I’ll be working, so think of me.
@20 lb_tmi – i definately agree about the autotoning – they are having issues hitting those high notes… but i am in love with junsu’s voice. it just has a different texture to it than the rest of the group (probably why he’s the lead vocal). i did NOT like his hair tho. shoulda kept it how it was in again & again – the side swept thing works for him. and poor khun just looked awkward in his outfit (though still undeniably adorable). taec and chansung looked smokin’ tho… i’m so glad chansung changed his hair from his training days – the shorter look works for him quite well
as for shining inheritance w/subs – yes it’s on viikii but last i heard the viikii server crashed and lost a bunch of videos, so they’re working on reuploading those. i think shining inheritance was one of the ones lost cuz i wasn’t able to find it last night.
-Shining Inheritance!!!
I just finished episode 5 and I LOVE IT !!
I’m watching it on youtube, but i cant find episode 6…
Does anyone know where else I can watch it or something like that…
please!
I don’t need subs for it, if that makes it easier!
@28,mishane-
“I’ve been trying to figure out why I’m so hooked. It’s not my type at all (I HATE rich boy/poor girl storyline as well as evil parent storyline and evil secondary girl storyline and nice secondary male storyline). In other words, I hate cliche’d storylines.”
This sounds exactly like ‘Terms of Endearment” and “Be Strong, Geum Soon”. From the sound of it (rich boy/poor gir), I don’t like it either but it really depends on how the drama is directed, the acting, the actors/actresses, soundtracks, etc. I’m not the type into melodramas and I couldn’t finish “Stairway to Heaven” because the story is so unreal. Also I’m never a big fan of Kwon Sang Woo or Choi Ji Woo. But I love TOE and BSGS because they have both humor and sorrow. They can make you laugh one minute and cry the next.
I don’t really think SI is your typical poor girl/rich boy drama especially since its kind of the other way round now lol. The reason I like the drama is because its addictive, its the drama in which you go “Omg I can’t believe she just did that”. The story is well paced and engaging, the acting is fine imo and its quite amusing at times aswell, esp LSG. And we all are eagerly awaiting the next ep because we don’t know what could happen next, its the unpredictability thats kept me hooked, everytime I think I’ve figured what will happen next then I start doubting myself. Esp BSB Oppa, I think theres something darker lurking there, I wouldn’t be surprised if he turned nasty.
hello everybody! happy friday! My, am i late or what!
I want to watch ROUGH CUT too! urg! that’s 4 hours away from boston! urg!
mmm…..seems like everybody is watching the brilliant legacy! I just started watching it few days ago but i stopped. I want to finish A MAN’S STORY first before i go to it….dont wana get confused! haha!
But omo, omo, omo!!! with A MAN’S STORY! cant wait for the next ep! I really really really like Chae Doo Woo!! I know he’s crazy! Nonetheless, LOVE him!! LOA! that’s why am so excited to see what happens to him! hope it’s a good ending! ^-^
@29 chajjye -
“Can anyone please tell me any Korean songs suitable to be sung in weddings? K-ballads has usually really sad lyrics. Preferably not trot though.”
Well, if you remember the song sung by Gong Yoo on the roof top, while on the phone with YEH, that’s a good one. Especially if you get the tabs and play the guitar along with the singing. The song is from Han Dong Joon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=un8iCSRCEP4
Actually, watching that again just now, man, that just kills me. Sometimes, a drama is worth the hype and sometimes it isn’t. CP was just great, wasn’t it?
LOL, I also thought of another song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUYaHDoDo0Y
The carrot song! Oh man, another great drama worth the hype that just killed me in certain scenes.
And finally, there is this song from a certain drama that still brings tears to my eyes, and I keep this song and this drama in my heart forever.

*Deep breath* Okay, I’m better now.
@ mishane – I’m actually considering flying to out to NY just for next Wednesday…
As for Shining Inheritence/Brilliant Legacy – I love the secondary guy(is it BSB?)!!! I totally want him and Eun Soo to end up together!!! I’d love it if kdrama surprised me for once and let the secondary guy win over the main lead!!! Right now, I’m not liking SG/Hwan – he’s just sooooo whiny!! And immature!
One of the reasons why i find this show addictive is that I like the pace of this show. Its not dragged out like some of the daily dramas(OMG – Heart of 19 was just painfully slow!!!)
Another reason – the show doesn’t hit you over the head(BOF), but nor is it too artistically dramatic(Story of a Man) – its a ‘face-value’ show, what you see is what you get kind of thing. After most kdramas – its a nice change.
@41 SAMSOOKI
Just need to let you know am laughing! youre such a softie!!!
@41 SAMSOOKI
you remind me of that stuffed toy Hyun Bin bought! (finally watched that series), very cuddly and cute!
@43 MEIKO**** ^-^ –
LOL. Yeah, I’m a softie at heart, but who cares. I just like my dramas.
Maybe I should have used Samshiki rather than Samsooki then. But I thought that if I was Samshiki then people might think I’m like that arrogant character played by my Binnie.
So, I decided to give Shining Inheritance a chance, and I was hooked from the very first episode. I love angsty family dramas and Koreans know how to play up the angst.
I think all the actors are doing a great job, especially the one who plays Eun Woo. You really feel for the main character Eun Sung, and boy can she do crying scenes well. I like the actress who is the evil step mother. Loved her in Golden Bride, and she is doing a great job in this role.
I just finished episode 3, and am trying not to go on a binge, but it just too good. I am really glad Triple started since I have been looking forward to it…it has an indie vibe to it, and I like those real life kind of dramas.
Hope everyone is off to a great weekend!
@ mishane
Thanks for the heads up. Though I cringe to think what kind of fashion statement SJS might make at a NY showing, he’s just too smexy to miss.
I just got hooked on the Shining Inheritance crack two days ago and I’m already up to ep 13. But, I had one moment in the first few minutes that was like o_O. Did anyone catch the echange between W and SM in the car when they talked about his time in America and H is establishing his bad boy swagger? I almost spit water all over my keyboard when SM said she heard that he shouldn’t mess with the blacks because their easily provoked (loosely paraphrased) and then H was like they shouldn’t have messed with him first. It was just hilarity to think of my sweet LSK throwing down with the bros on some city street somewhere.
I’m not sure who i’m shipping with as yet. Part of me really likes JS, but the other part is intrigued to see how H will be once he curbs the ‘tude and realizes he’s in lurv. I’ll tell you one thing though, I am totally looking forward to the day the evil step-mom’s house of cards comes tumbling down for real this time.
@ b020
–As for Shining Inheritence/Brilliant Legacy – I love the secondary guy(is it BSB?)!!! I totally want him and Eun Soo to end up together!!! I’d love it if kdrama surprised me for once and let the secondary guy win over the main lead!!! Right now, I’m not liking SG/Hwan – he’s just sooooo whiny!! And immature!–
See, I usually always root for the secondary guy because the main guy is usually an ass. However, not here. I don’t know what episode you’re on so I don’t want to spoil you, but I think the writers handled Hwan falling for Eun Soo in a perfect way, in a way that I’m not even rooting for Secondary Guy because I don’t think he really has a chance.
Which is why I’m loving the pace of this because if it were just a 16 episode drama, Hwan would have fallen for Eun Soo TOO fast (which I hate! when we have 4-5 episodes of animosity and then immediate turnaround).
I think the characters are written well and I love the interaction and the play of emotions between Hwan and Eun Soo. On Hwan’s side he initially disliked Eun Soo (for taking his bag) then really hated her (for moving in) and then felt really guilty (for the father thing) then even MORE guilty (for the brother thing) and then feels crappy (because he thinks she hates him) and there’s going to be even more emotions at play soon! I like that he feels bad and wants to make things better but doesn’t really know how to (and I’m excited for what else is going to come, when he discovers more about the family!).
And on Eun Soo’s side, she absolutely HATES him (for the brother/father thing) but it’s not in her nature to be completely vindictive. I don’t think she feels bad for him, I think she just thinks he’s a despicable human being.
Man, I CANNOT wait until Saturday! THIS is why I stay away from currently airing shows.
@45 SAMSOOKI
hahaha!! yeah, he was arrogant…but he was hot too! ^-^ But Samsooki sounds better actually. Keep it!
And i sooo love that stuffed toy! hahaha! wana buy one!
RE: SHINING INHERITANCE
I started watching that and i have to say, it has those heavy drama scenes which am not really into, but other than that, seems like it has an interesting plot…
like HHJ’s haircut!
and Eun Soo and Jun Se seem to make a pretty good pair! I know they will not be together but I like them both!
ill PROBABLY go back to watching it after A Story Of a Man is done…..
Someone teach me things to say in Korean in case I get the ‘hug’ from So Ji Sub (apparently there’s a meet and greet and a ‘hug’, that’s what it says on the website, at least if you purchase the more expensive ticket, which was $15 instead of $13, lol).
How do you say “You’ve got the sexiest ass I’ve ever seen” in Korean?
or
“Pardon me, is this seat taken?” (while grabbing his butt)
or
“Do you know karate? Because your body is really kickin’.”
(all pick up lines that have been used on me, unfortunately)
@50 mishane
Geez if a possible hug only costs an additional $2 have they TOTALLY undersold SJS or what!!!! @_@ Poor guy is going to get sexually harassed for a measly 2 bucks. LOL Damn should be off trying to book a flight to NYC + grabbing my $15 for tix!
Must get the language teachers of this blog to teach us :
‘Can you please remove your shirt? I just want to check if that that scar from C and A was real.’ ‘Can I touch your abs?’
Oh and finally – ‘Can I have your number? But if you are shy SJS, can you at least pass on your pal Kang Ji Hwan’s?’ LOL
@ mishane – LOL! I’ve never gotten pick up lines like that, unfortunately. I have gotten things like “Do you like books? I like books too! We should totally go on a date.” Then again, I tend to attract younger guys (DO NOT WANT. DX), so I suppose they haven’t really evolved any subtlety or smoothness yet. ^^;;
Re: Brilliant Legacy/Shining Inheritance. OMG, that show. It’s like crack. Every now and then there’s a show that sucks me in so much I don’t even wait for subs (I speak some Korean, but I’m more comfortable with subs), and BL is one of them. Week after week I’m dying to know what happens, and this week especially has been killer. I sincerely hope that Seung-mi gets a proverbial punch in the face once Hwan confronts her about that thing (don’t want to spoil people too much ^^;;) in tomorrow’s episode, but I have a feeling she’s going to try to twist it to her advantage or something. Also, Eun-soo at the second branch! And Eun-woo with his glasses! OMG, can’t wait can’t wait can’t waaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiitttttttttt~~~~~
Sorta off-topic, but did anyone see the new 1N2D episode where the guys were teasing LSG about his “girlfriend,” saying that he was dating Seung-mi? XD LSG’s expression was priceless.
@ 52 Kender
I don’t think there’s such a thing as a smooth pick up line. I always laugh at them.
Some memorable ones:
Guy: *points at his shirt* Hey, do I have a stain here?
Me: *confused* What? No.
Guy: Oh, okay. I’m XXX, what’s your name?
Guy: Wow. Your eyes are beautiful. Like the moon.
Me: Okay.
Guy: I want to write a song about them.
Me. Uh huh.
Guy: *proceeds to sing a random song and plays AIR PIANO!*
Me: *mortified*
Haha, pick up lines are soooo cheesy. In college, my girlfriends and I would make up our own in a contest to see who could be more cheesy.
@ 52 Kender
–Sorta off-topic, but did anyone see the new 1N2D episode where the guys were teasing LSG about his “girlfriend,” saying that he was dating Seung-mi? XD LSG’s expression was priceless.–
What is this 1N2D thing you speak of?
@ 53/54 mishane – AIR PIANO?! *dies a little inside* I am so sorry, I can’t even begin to tell you how sorry I am. XD My friend and her boyfriend often compete with coming up with cheesy things to say to each other. I always try to get as far away as possible when that happens, because they can come up with some nauseatingly sweet things.
1N2D is 1 Night 2 Days, a variety show with Kang Ho-dong, LSG, and four other guys. They travel around Korea doing games and stuff.
Off-topic, but I’ve been wondering.. How do you pronounce your username? Is it “miss-hah-neh”? “Mee Shayne”? “Mee Shah Neh”? Because my mental pronunciation changes every time, and I just want to know if there’s a correct way.
@50 MISHANE
LOL!!! I agree with BSPANDA! totally sexually harassed for two bucks more!!! I can see it now! LMAO!
@36 lovenyc52:
i’ve grown to deeply appreciate Junsu’s voice. i like how you put that… “texture” to Junsu’s voice. his rendition of “wild flower” is on repeat on my mp3. and he was the FIRST one i noticed in 2PM when i first saw the Again and Again MV. that look is HIS… i really hate that they’ve changed it for the promotion of Hate you.
i go thru rotations for my current faves. right now i’m totally loving Taec and Junsu. last week i was on a Taec and Khun high since Khun was EVERYWHERE!! I can’t wait to get the DVD of Mai&Tina’s concert with the extra special Khun addition (and Chin guest sings too!)
@ 55 Kender
I’m bad at phonetically spelling things out but it’s pronounced “mishayne”. It’s a play off my middle name which is horrible (and when I asked my mom why she gave me that name, she said she just stuck some words together and named me that, WTF ma!). My aunts let my mom name their kids and she came up with “Rutherford” for one and “Calwayne” for the other. Gah. At least my first name is normal!
Honestly, I wonder how many people are going to show up to this thing in NYC. I have no idea how big the Korean Entertainment community in NYC is. I’m already planning to show up an hour early just in case and so I can get a close seat. I think I’ll spend the whole time throwing winks at SJS.
Maybe I’ll “accidentally” trip into his arms and then our lips will accidentally meet and then he’ll bring me home to his grandpa where I can pretend to be his long lost cousin and we can . . . oh wait.
I am really enjoying City Hall. Didn’t have much expectation in the beginning as the subject didn’t seem to be that interesting. Wanted to watch it because of Kim Suna and didn’t really know who Cha Seung Won was. It was a real surprise – good story telling, good acting from all the characters and mainly the lead is doing a fantastic job.
KSA always has good chemistry with her costars but with CSW it is sizzling. Both have good comedic timing and are good in more dramatic scenes. Not to mention that CSW is so hot.
Writer did a good job keeping everything interesting and suspenseful.
just wanna drop a line on Ip Man. I’m so not a kung fu /action movie gal, anything that doesn’t have dialogues for intervals of minutes…I’ll fall asleep (even Bourne) and I’ve seen them all. On top of that, VERY sceptical of Donnie Yen’s acting ability prior…but seriously, quoting samsooki’s IFC Center quote: “it is physically impossible for this movie to be any more awesome.” < easily mine. GO SEE IT! (mishane: Have fun and yeah, harrass SJS for all the fangirls!)
@ Kender: *sigh* by the time I turn to TCM for Kagemusha, it’s almost done.. SO sad.. T_T I’ve always wanna see that one, and now …still haven’t. My first Kurosawa experience was embarrassing: for some odd reason, a bunch of us went to see Rhapsody in August in theatre and we’re wayyy too young, never even heard of Nagasaki, sooo lost and bored, we started making fun of too many scenes and was kicked out. Our bad.
@ 58 mishane – LOL, that sucks. Your mom sounds like a trip. My parents were convinced I was going to be a boy, so they didn’t have any girl names picked out for me.. They ended up naming me after my dad’s cousin who called to congratulate him that day, while my middle name came from a Beatles’ song. Luckily, they’re both fairly normal names, but still. Poor you.
Gaaaaah, the more I think about it, the more I want to go to NYC to hug SJS. So jealous. ㅠ_ㅠ
@ 61 mookie – Aww, that’s sad.
You should go rent it or something.. I think it’s probably my favourite Kurosawa film (Seven Samurai comes close, though, and Ran was brilliant), so it’s definitely worth whatever means necessary to watch it. Seriously, the man was practically blind when he filmed it! *in awe*
Anyway. So, in preparation for The Man Who Can’t Get Married, I’m about to start watching Kekkon Dekinai Otoko. Given the overwhelming adoration I’ve noticed for this drama, I thought I’d tell people so they can give me a thumbs-up or spazz with me later if they’d like. XD
@50, mishane,
I wonder how many bodyguards will tackle you if you start out by grabbing his butt and then asking if you can touch his stomach. But if you get the courage to sprint past the bodyguards and molest SJS, we’ll be cell-phone videotaping the encounter.
As for things that will get his attention other than “I’m a crazy stalker and I want to molest you,” you might consider just going up to him, leaning in and whispering this into his ear, in your sexiest voice:
“소지섭씨… 보이지 않는 카리스마…보았습니다…”
romanization:
“So Ji Sub sshee.. Bo-ee-jee ahn-nun ka-ris-ma …bo-ahh-ss-sum-ni-da…”
rough translation:
“Mr. So Ji Sub… your invisible charisma…I have seen it…”
Why:
So Ji Sub was very recently made a model/spokesperson for Vonin (an uber high-end maker of skincare products, whose slogan is “invisible charisma”). By saying this to SJS, you’ll be showing off your Korean, your knowledge of his skin-care products hawking, admitting to him that his magnetic charm is working on you, and declaring your fangirl-ism all in one short sentence.
If you do THAT, guaranteed he will never forget you.
Hmmm, maybe I should get my wife to say that… then he will hang out with his later and then give me KJH cell phone number…. …then I can mail pics of me and KJH to bspanda and hjkomo.
…yes, my plan is all coming together now…
“Mr. So Ji Sub… I see your invisible charisma…”
Haha, when I read that the first thing I thought about was the ‘whispering eye’ (watch Role Models).
Mr. So Ji Sub. . .I see your whispering eye. . . (the preteen boy in me is laughing hysterically right now)
You know what, mishane, you should ask samsooki to jazz up his hair to his binnie-est, show up in his metro-pinkshirt-whiteslack look and sashay his way thro the bodyguards, lawyer talk up SJS….buying u ample, ample time to sneak up fr behind, grab or touch whatever u can and whisper that line.
@ cecee
I’m enjoying Queen Seon Duk. Little Deok Man is plucky, but Go Hyun Jung is awesome scary as the villain. O_o
@ mishane & bspanda
ROFL at the pick-up lines!
@ Samsooki
Yes, please record SJS’s molestation by mishane.
But DREAM ON! about KJH….he’s not coming anywhere near 500 miles (let alone, 500 feet) from you…
re: MBC America, if you want to see Cha Tae Hyun, Kim Hyun Joo, Jang Hyuk, and Kim Ha Neul in their younger days, check out Into The Sunlight airing on weekend evenings.
And Triple will probably start airing after Cinderella Man ends, so you can join in on the drooling over JB’s men.
Can’t remember who asked about where to watch Shining Inheritance/Brilliant Legacy:
- dl from aja-aja
- subs by HaruHaru at d-addicts
^ @ mookie
LOL!
WOOOO…. I started Shinning Inheritance and managed to finish 14 eps in 2 days…now I have to wait for weekly show now…love it. Started Romance Zero last night but lost interest after 2 eps… NY is too far from Seattle for So Ji Sub. Have a nice weekend everyone….
@57 lb_tmi – haha i go thru changes of who’s my favorite too!! i started liking the magnae chansung cuz i saw him in a star golden bell episode with jae and junho and jae was making fun of how much he eats and chansung was all embarrased and it was cute
and then i saw the again & again video and i fell in love with junsu (the whole stand-up collar business and scarves and side-swept hair looks so good on him and hearing him sing was like..omo… haha) and taec (imo he is the most ‘typically’ good looking guy in the group) and his low gravelly rapping voice is HOT (though his singing voice could use a lil work). and somewhere along the line i started noticing khunnie and the adorable lil things he does (his winks and smile kill me everytime)…. i mean really, the kid is kind of over the top ridiculously cute…
anyways, i’m a total fangirl when it comes to 2PM. it’s kind of embarrassing since I have not fangirled since the days of NSYNC lol.
ps – what is junsu’s rendition of “wild flower”? Where can i get me some of THAT??
) I actually found a video of junsu, junho and jae singing Rain’s ‘I Do’ on a radio program and would LOVE to have that on mp3 if i could only find it! I also giggled when I heard Junho singing a Rain song since he is totally mini-Rain! =P
@57 lb_tmi
here’s a link for ya
http://seoulbeats.com/2009/06/2pm-gets-wet-and-wild/
enjoy… i know i did.. haha
After reading some of the banter above, a funny thought came into my head. What if SJS is reading this! I’m picturing him on stage saying “where’s mishane? I’ll let you touch my butt if I can touch yours!”
@52 Kender; I don’t like how the writers are turning Sung Mi into a potental evil stepsister. I always thought she cared alot for Eun Sung and her stepbrother. It was until she found out about Eun Sung’s dad being alive, That she started turning somewhat evil.
Also… what is with Eun Sung’s dad? He faked his death, and expects to return to to his normal life? He’s a dead beat, and douche. If I was Eun Sung, I would be really pissed if I found out that my father was still alive… and that he couldn’t do anything to stop what Eun Sung’s step mother did.
It would been better, if Eun Sung’s father had some kind of amnesia… then at least it would of made him not a bad person.
Everyone in that family irritates me to no end. How can grown adults past their 30’s be so irresponable? Hwan’s family is no different. His mother and sister are annoying. They are basicly spoiled and lazy.
This whole drama annoys me… yet I still watch it, because of the cliffhangers.
@ 68 coco
Haha, I wish!
Man, I’m sounding like the biggest perv in this post! Okay, I won’t go for a full ass grab, maybe just a butt graze?
@ mishane
Just pull a fast one…and then blame the guy with the Binnie hair standing next to you.
SJS won’t be the wiser…his bud KJH is sure to have given him ample warning about going to NYC.
@71 that guy – LOL! Eun-soo’s dad always creeps me out.. I’ve never really liked that actor, so I think that’s colouring my opinion of him a little. But yeah, I agree, I hate him for expecting that everything will be all hunky-dory once his family finds out he’s alive. If he’d just stayed “dead,” staying out of his family’s lives, I could sorta get behind him, but the man committed insurance fraud and expects to get away with it? What does he think is going to happen? As for Seung-mi.. Although I’m still not 100% behind her change in character, it’s not completely unexpected. Her ridiculous devotion to Hwan is the driving force behind her scheming–it’s not dislike of Eun-soo, although that might change once she starts to see Eun-soo as a rival for Hwan’s affections. It is a little much, though, I do agree with that.
I’m totally waiting for Hwan’s mom and Butler Pyo to develop some sort of relationship. Middle-aged romance is always my favourite subplot in dramas, and those two are ridiculously adorable. :3
i can’t wait to see your thougts on the ending of A Ma’s Story javabeans! =]
I’m listening to and loving V V Brown’s ‘Shark in the water’.
The unofficial promo trailer for the ‘Warrior’s Way’ has piqued my interest. It looks good.
I’m hooked on Atashinchi no Danshi ( I know there are a few people here watching it). It’s so cute and sweet and funny, Iand just want to pinch its cheeks! Well, if it was a person and not a TV show that is. But still!
Re: my last post– Eun-SUNG, not Eun-SOO. I’m still thinking of Story of a Man, I guess. ^^;
Oh noez, i think there is something wrong with my computer, because it kept showing only 3 comments. But there are 77 comments already. I feel so cheated now, it’s a conspiracy i tell ya!
I was just watching Soulmates and my god I can’t stop druelling, my god thats a good looking cast.
@mishane: You will get to see SJS? The SO JI SUB? In Person? In his HUMAN manifestation? OHMYFG, I am so jealous. And happy for you–really.
Did you know about this appearance weeks ahead or something because if I had known about this even a couple weeks ago I would have bought tickets and flown out. It’s so unfair because I am off to vacation and i would have GLADLY put that money and vacation time toward SJS. Bahamas or Possible chance to be in the same auditorium as So Ji Sub for a few minutes? Not even close.
Your pick up lines are hilarious. “Is this seat taken”? Ahh-haa, ha. HA.
Please send SJS our love — tell him he features prominently, and in great detail and varying degrees of undress, in the daydreams of at least one person here in America. And I will bet many, many, MANY more.
—
About Atasinchi: I love that show so much. I have already watched Ep 8 about six times because the lead up to the great moment is just as sweet as the moment. To paraphrase: Is this an accident? No. Is this because of a full moon? No, there is no full moon.
—–
About Story of a Man: I have a lot to say about the ending, but will wait until JB caps it.
—
About Shining inheritance: I watched a few episodes and it is definitely like crack. Unfortunately, like crack, it also made my stomach hurt. Did no one else just feel dread and tension and OMG-what-will-happen-to-her during EVERY episode? I hate evil stepmother stories because the protagonist is so completely outmatched. If you are a kid, how do you even begin to counter an adult like this?
—
OMG, mishane — you will see So Ji Sub? Are you floating on air right now, with your head in the clouds, with rainbows everywhere raining skittles?
80 Nom_Kitteh
I found out about the festival last week (it’s yearly, the New York Asian Film Festival) and apparently every year they have a lot of guest attendees. I only found out a few days ago that SJS would be attending and getting an award so I bought the ticket right away. I’m considering buying the ticket for the showing the night before also. I mean it’s only $13.50!! Why not?! Plus, maybe he’ll remember my face!
To be deadly completely honest, I might be the worst SJS fangirl because I’ve only seen him on MISA and I’m not a HUGE fan of him. I think he’s mildly attractive, but he’s not on my top 10. That said, I’m still crazy excited because I will be meeting him (and Kong Hyo Jin!!) and they are both actors that I thought I’d never get the chance to see in real life. So yay! And come out next year. I’m sure they’ll have more people then too!
i’m very tempted to go see So Ji Sub since I think he is so sexy and on my top 5 mine list.
If I had to say a pick up line to him I might say “I love your small eyes, they remind me of the guy on the 1000 won bill”
This way I’m complimenting an asset of his and showing my knowledge of the korean monetary system.
What ya think? Too much? Am I going to get a weird look?
I’m not a mad fangirl of SJS either, still he’s undeniably oozing manly sex appeal and can act up a storm. And if I ever see him in person, self control will be out the door..
even more random and pervie, That Heat is on my ipod, with the ‘1for the treble, 2 for the bass, 3 for the ladies..4 for the…..’ ….um..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAqHdbPoD10
so yeah, nycgirl, you’ll be fine, just imagine me humming to that song…and grabbing SJS counting 1for, 2 for, 3 for, 4 for… lol
Just saw the teaser trailer for Marine Boy with Kim Kang-woo and Park Si-yeon (both fantastic in Story of a Man). It looks intense, has anyone seen it?
Teaser trailer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dgnITD1dv0
The clip that pretty much sealed the deal for me (mind the kiddies with this one):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFQgK-lxjpo
@mishane:
. This only means that you will actually remain sane when you see SJS whereas I would be a puddle of mush. You should definitely buy a ticket for the night before, but that’s just my unbiased opinion
.
I got to “mildly attractive” and spewed out my coffee all over my computer
You should watch What Happened in Bali. You will cry buckets but it’s worth it.
Personally I think he looks better in print than on film. He is very photogenic and his quirky sense of style sets him apart from others. To me he is like the Tadanobu Asano of Korea — non mainstream, unusual, off beat, and intriguing.
Have I mentioned how jealous I am?
@nycgirl:
DO IT! Don’t just be tempted. If SJS is on your top 5 list, GO FOR IT!!! Your pick up line is, haa-ha, wacky and head-scratching, just the way SJS likes them, I think.
Oh I like the Lucksmiths, their music reminds me of Belle and Sebastian.
@nycgrl
LOL … your pick up line is HI-LAI-RI-OUS! I love it. You should use it. You have to go for original, otherwise you’ll just blend in with the rest of the screaming fangirls. LOL
@ Mookie, Nom_Kitteh and crzycpl
You guys are so funny. I’m a total weirdo but I usually don’t act on all my thoughts. I would be arrested if I acted on all my whims.
@nycgrl
nah! what have you got to lose?
don’t live life with regrets and ‘what ifs’. LOL I’m still laughing hysterically here from your pick up line … and it’s 2:40am!
Hi Open Thread People! Ok, I’m going to admit, I have no idea what the topic is tonight, because I really didn’t read any comments. Sorry, folks, I’m just a little lazy tonight. I do want to give a shout out to Javabeans. We all love her recaps, right? (Of course we do, or we wouldn’t be here.) But does anyone know how hard it is to recap a show? I am very new to the Kdrama world and have only watched two shows, Boys Over Flowers (which I am now watching for the third time) and Coffee Prince. I tried blogging/recapping these on my own websited, and DUDE, it’s not easy! After I just linked to Javabeans recap for the fifth (or sixth?) episode of Coffee Prince, I gave up. And too think, she watches & recaps several at one time! She’s Superwoman, that’s all.
Also, to everyone out there who has more Kdrama knowledge than me, can someone recommend the next drama I should watch? I’m torn between Fireworks and H.I.T. Now, my “Kdrama Mama” recommends H.I.T. and that is one I want to see, I’m just not sure if I want to watch it now. My taste in TV shows is eclectic. I loved BoF & Coffee Prince, and as far as American TV is concerned, I love CSI, Charmed, NCIS, 90210, Dark Angel, Scrubs, Privledged, and well, a lot of different stuff. I love things with strong female leads and really cute boys. Any recommendations? Thanks! You all rock!
@ omo and other City Hallers,
High Five!!! This show is what gets me through the week, I’m tellin ya. An absolute stressbuster. Love every single episode and can’t wait for the next one each week.
Loved the part where Mi Rae was going through all the City Hall books and wouldn’t answer Jo Gook’s phonecalls. And Jo Gook was frantically looking for her and leaving messages on her phone like, ‘are you on a date with the neighbourhood oppa?’. I don’t know why but I kind of wish I was that ‘neighbourhood oppa’ that Jo Gook was jealous of. I didn’t use to find KSA attractive but she’s suddenly hot to me now, and the pretend-cute image her character puts on when she’s with Jo Gook I don’t find annoying but, actually, quite endearing.
To all the ladies out here, what was your neighbourhood oppa like?
@Andromytta: Welcome to the kdrama world, first off the fact that you’ve seen BOF more than once is surprising but its points towards you having tolerance of tackyness then.
From your tastes start with Delightful Girl, My Girl, Goong and Fullhouse, they’re pretty much the best introductions in to K drama, and check out Dramabeans drama ratings, the girl knows what she’s talking about.
@KOOKy
Thanks! My Kdrama Mama recommended some of those same shows! And yes, I have quite a high tolerance for tackyness…I grew up watching Aaron Spelling shows! *lol* The more over the top, the better! There are just so many shows I want to see that I can’t decide what to watch next!
Start with Delightful girl and My Girl, easy to watch, fun, well acted. But whatever happens stay away from Witch Yoo Hee and Exhibition of Fireworks, no matter what people say those shows were god awful.
I’m considering watching “Goong” next. I’m somewhat limited to what’s on Dramafever, since I’m afraid to download too much to my laptop. I’ll definitely check and see if either of those two shows are on there. I’m all about shows that are fun and easy to watch. This is what I do to relieve stress, since my job is chock full of things that are niether fun or easy! *lol* Thank you so much for your input. It’s greatly appreciated!
oh steve byrne’s on Comedy Central! *swoon*
You guys can add me to the list of people addicted to Shining Inheritance.
So I’ve started watching Sons of Sol Pharmacy House, and Javabeans was right
It’s great! =]]]
Hahaha!
Omgosh! This looks more and more like a SJS+Mishane love thread.
HI-FIVE to all CITY HALLERS!
Just finished subbing Ep 14 late last night. And I have panda eyes to show.
Boy! What a feeling! Got to watch it again. Couldn’t appreciate it entirely while my mind was focusing on getting the subs right.
Might need boxes and boxes of kleenex for the next couple of epis. But I hope the writer is sensible enough to inject some tears of joy!
They just started showing BL tonight (in Hawaii). I was going to try to catch it later when the subs for all the episodes are done but couldn’t resist turning it on. Probably a bad idea coz I think I’m going to be stuck following it. May even cheat and find the subs and watch onwards. It’s not so great so far but saw the ratings and all the great things being said on this site….sounds like it’s going to get much better.
@47 alasam – by the way, I laughed about what you wrote on Hwan fighting. I don’t think he can take down anyone – he seems a little bit of a wimp especially since Eun Sung could take him down.
Ahh, Shining Inheritance. I sat through the first 6 episodes and then lost interest. It’s always difficult for me to continue a drama when I decide that I prefer “the other guy” to end up with the lead actress. It seems like they cast Lee Seung Ki because he’s a slight variant of Lee Min Ho. Also, Han Hyo Joo reminds me of Song Hye Kyo.
I’m enjoying City Hall. Although, his interest in her was sort of abruptly dumped in our laps. I found that disconcerting. However, I usually complain when there’s not enough intimacy in a drama, and City Hall has offered up quite a lot of it. Some things about it don’t quite click into place, but Kim Sun Ah seems to have some magical hold over me.
The Sons of Sol Pharmacy is a little too scattered for my attention span. I want to like it a lot, but the whole beating her sons every 5 minutes thing is sort of upsetting (I know it’s comical and all, but yeesh). I love Bok-shil and Dae-pung, and Mi-pung is a sweetheart. I’ll be following it on and off to see their development.
I’m wary about Partner, but at the same time, I’m extremely hopeful.
i was walking in the idae area yesterday and i passed a restaurant that was evidently one of the filming spots for shining inheritance. i will have to watch it sometime…
and story of a man… did anyone else experience the same frustration i did when i finished the ep 20 download from aja aja and it was only 20 minutes?!! i was like NUOO!!! but i just finished watching the fixed episode today. it’s so sad… i wish it would have been a slightly happier ending for some characters, but i guess story of a man needs to keep its intenseness. but it was good
i’m going to miss it!!!!!!
random:will have to start packing to go to california. nice weather and yummy multicultural non-”fusion” food awaits my tummeh – a nice break from the ramen diet.
meanwhile, triple and sol pharmacy! <3<3<3
@ 68 lovenyc52
if i can figure out how to do the uploading thing, i’ll post a mp3 link for “Wild Flower” and “i do” for you in next week’s open thread. it’ll prolly take me that long to figure it out, i’m kinda pc-challenged. i only know how to download! haha… the video is actually on youtube, but i can’t link at this time (work limitations. they’re so annoying)
total fangirling over 2PM. i’m glad i got introduced to them, as i was getting impatient w/ my Edward Cullen obsession… plus there’s so many more ppl in 2PM that i can eve rotate my love around. =)
@69… that’s just sickly adorable…and wet. i’m feeling a lilo cougarish. HA! i love Taec’s innocent look! and then Khun and Junho in that same pic. OMG that first pic of Taec and Chansung WET!!! pure YUMMY!!!
SJS in NYC? *screams silently so the hubs doesn’t hear* I wonder if I can get my sister to go in my stead, have her use those cheesy pickup lines, and maybe even touch his abs (groping may be a bit too much for me to handle), so that I can live my life vicariously through her
*raise hand* Shining Inheritance addict but don’t understand why. I didn’t think I would like the Cinderella storyline but I was hooked by the 2nd episode. I think it might be because Eun Sung is so spunky and every time she cries, my eyes gets all moist. Hwan is such an punk, but tameable(?). Jun Se is adorable, maybe too dang sweet, but I’d take him. I like Seung Mi, but I can see her turning out like her mom. Kim Mi Sook is so scary! The dad sucks. He doesn’t deserve good kids like Eun Sung and Eun Woo. The story moves along at a good pace and dang the twists.
We’re doing the Story of A Man and Shining Inheritance rotation…strange mix, but it works for us. I can’t wait for Triple (adore YKS) and then Friends (samshiki!). On top of all that, my Takki will be back in a full jdrama series in July. Yup! I must have been a very good girl this year to deserve all this…I decided to turn 40 gracefully and not whine and complain so I’m getting my sweet reward.
Just watched MNIKSS episode 8 on dramafever (got my beta invite, hehe). Just awesome acting, I think its the best episode of the drama. Love it, and MNIKSS remains my favorite drama. But I have to say that despite the convenience, I like the DVD set better than online watching.
@ vere
Re City Hall, some have the same feeling as you that his interest in her seems to be abrupt. Nonetheless, if you watch it carefully, she intriques him from the beginning albeit in a weird and annoying way to begin with. He then starts having feelings for her, I’d say, during the pageant time. MR’s subsequent bold acts gradually adds to his burgeoning admiration in her and his care towards her during the election time is beyond a business relationship. In fact, the way their love is developed makes this relationship much stronger than a normal boy-chase-girl one.
I guess what Gracie14 at Soompi (who earlier expressed similar view) posted today at CH forum is a good summation of the situation:
“I went back and rewatched the previous episodes again to see if I could find some clarification for their sudden acknowledgement of feelings for each other. This time around I noticed a lot of non verbal indications that their feelings were growing, more so his feelings because I think SMR never tried to hide hers. He never really said anything about liking her, it was more his actions and reactions in various scenes.
I know that everyone feels that he is two timing his fiancee, but I also noticed there’s not much of an emotional connection there. She always has to call him, locate him. In an earlier episode (4 I think). She was suprised he answered his phone, she complained that he never says anything sweet to her, upon hearing this he still did not, he was busy watching SMR. He is totally different with SMR. He constantly looks for her, calls her, and spends time with her. I know she is techinically his fiancee, but I don’t think he has any feelings for her. Now, with that being said-because of her role in his political life, and BB probably having chose her for him (I’m just speculating here) I don’t know if it will be easy for him to dispose of her. The plot is becoming so complicated, but also so exciting as well. As a person who enjoys politics, I am loving this drama! “
Re City Hall
If you take his relationship with his mentor/father into account the whole thing makes even more sense. He spend his whole life trying to live up to the old man’s expectations trying to gain his approval. The realisation that even he was spied upon hit him hard. Being told that honesty is nothing but weakness in politics and that even close allies/family are only weapons did of course estrange him from his father and his fiance.
Any subtle attraction our heroine might have had before was blocked by his political ambition. But taking her and modelling her into the mayor to spite his father was probably an act of rebellion: “I will show you what I can do without you and even with an honest candidate without background!” Her earnest will to serve the citizens and do her best for everone and not for herself has to be a more than welcome change for him. It broke down more and more of his defenses (hence the typhoon remark). All of this might have been an act of rebellion in the beginning but began to develop a live of its own.
There was never an attachment to his fiancée neither on his nor on her side the relationship was more of a business matter than anything else. Either way our hero will decide that his goal of going to the Blue House to make his father proud cannot be the be all and end all, but we will see how things turn out…
@samsooki: have the urge to re-watch MNIKSS, i completely forgotten what’s on Ep. 8 that makes it so good.
City Hall is Love!
samsooki,
loved that kdrama clip/song with ahn jae wook.
captures the essence of kdramas at its core.
@108, qwerty_u,
Episode 8 of MNIKSS is about as good as it gets I think. When I watch it, I just feel grateful that they did such a good job. Very few dramas make me feel grateful that they wroked so hard to make a good product.
With MBC America from AT&T U-verse, we have Cinderella Man, Last Scandal and New Heart being regularly taped.
But I am eager to watch City Hall… Any suggestions on where to go?
Happy weekend to all.
@109 kb,
yup, I totally love that kind of thing. That’s going to be my next purchase I think. Something to hold me over untilk I can dl and watch Friend.
oh my!
tried to find out who that girl was in that kdrama clip with ahn jae wook, and found out she’s none other than choi jin-sil. before this, i knew nothing about her besides her name and her suicide.
funny how after watching only a 5 minute clip of her and ahn jae wook, i felt this connection with her such that after i found out she had passed, a huge wave of emotion overwhelmed me. amazing how these kdramas can suck you in emotionally, even in 5 minutes.
CJS is probably a little bit before your time, but she was the dream that most of us wished for – wearing her emotions on her sleeve, she never once seemed fake or affected to me. But as real as she seemed to be, I think it is easier if we just think of her as that dream – then she really isn’t gone.
@112 & 113
I recognized her right away and had a shot at YesAsia to see whether I could buy Star in my Heart as DVD set. The US-version is available but will only be shipped to Mexico, Central und South America… not to the United States (where I have at least a friend in Atlanta) and – of course – not to Europe! This is once again such a joke: Why is is called a US-version at all? Region code?
By the way: the edition for Japan would be approximately USD 300.
AnitaLotti,
as i was searching the web for the lyrics to that song, i came upon this website that sells the dvd for us 59.95. http://hanbooks.com/stinmyhembct.html
they appear to ship all over the world; however, the dvds are region 1,4 (not read by european dvd players).
i can’t vouch for the legitimacy of this website. they might be selling bootlegs for all i know.
@115
Would somebody who dedicates a whole section to bibles and hymnals sell bootlegged DVDs? I sincerely hope not.
Well, thanks for the link – will take a closer look at it tomorrow.
@ Samsooki
Do you remember the air humidifier question one or two threads back? I watched “On Air” this week and the scriptwriter (one of the four main leads) even had one at home/in the office. Obviously, we sincerely underestimated the dry desert climate in Korea. There is just no other explanation for the phenomenon…
@117 AnitaLotti
LOL.
Maybe it’s for skin care. Dry skin leads to wrinkles – I think that if there is something that Koreans are scared of, more than bad economic conditions, scary ex-gf’s who won’t let go, evil mother-in-laws, corrupt politicians, and ghosts… I think Koreans are scared of wrinkles.
Btw, I just bought the Star in my Heart box set from DVD Asian for $69.99. They are reputable, I’ve bought authentic box sets from them a few times before. So I got this box set coming, plus 2 Outs in the Bottom of the Ninth in a few weeks off of pre-order from Yes Asia… and City Hall to watch online somewheres, plus Friend: Legend, and maybe Sons of Sol Pharmacy… LOL, I am loaded down now!
@Samsooki oh that’s great! You can watch it @ http://aja-aja.com/regular/city-hall (not english subbed)
click on the episode, Megaupload will show up, it will give you an option to download or on your top left corner there’s an option to watch online “View on Megavideo”
Try to watch 1-3 ep, I hope you enjoy it as much as i did! btw, don’t mind CSW’s perfectly shaped eyebrows, I got used to it.
any other suggestions is open too! I’m still new with this online streaming thing.
@103 lb_tmi – thanks
I’ve seen a bunch of those radio programs on youtube where they do covers of other people’s songs but i can’t figure out how to get mp3 versions of those. i’d really appreciate it if you could upload the links, but if not it’s totally cool
can’t wait for them to put out a new album – i heard it’s coming in the fall sometime. I hope it’s a full album this time!
I have emerged from the black hole that is Goong, which I had completely decided not to watch because I hurt so much for Joo Ji-hoon; but, being a woman, I exercised my prerogative to change my mind and watched it anyway. My Coffee Prince love for Yoon Eun-hye is pretty much what the deciding factor was; JJH was the bonus.
I think I might have to join Samsooki in line at the adoption agency, because I want YEH to be mine forever (I have a son her age and they could get married! It would be AWESOME). And I want to go kidnap JJH now and take care of him for the rest of his life. Seriously. I want to write him letters and send him presents in prison, if it comes to that. Bless his heart.
But did I like it? Well, it was no Coffee Prince (what is, right?), but as I’ve been glued to it for the better part of the last 3 days, I guess I did. I have to admit to FF-ing through a lot of it because some scenes were just yawn-inducing. But JJH’s crying scenes…killed. OMG! I’m such a sucker for a man who cries! And when he shoots projectile tears from his eyes while still managing to look beautiful…my cup runneth over.
I think I just outed myself as the oldest fangirl in the world…hey, 40 is the new 20, or so I heard on an infomercial today.
Rambling, rambling…oh yeah! I snuck a peak at a certain Kim Sun-ah/Cha Seung-won scene today on YouTube and YOWZA! I do believe City Hall just got bumped up a little higher on the next-watch list.
I don’t know if anyone else caught Jun Ji-hyun (or Gianna Jun as she is now known to the western world)’s film, Blood: The Last Vampire. I came out in Taiwan on the 12th, and I saw it today. The movie could have done better, but I thought JJH did a fantastic job, and the people over at the IMDb seem to think so too. Hopefully we will get to see her “real” Hollywood debut in the near future.
@ langdon813 – 121
I have been debating whether I should watch Goong for a while now. I used to read the manwha through online scans a few years back and I was excited to see how the dramatized version turned out – but then I heard YEH was in it and I sort of avoided it because I can only take so much of her (I think I handled Coffee Prince well because I like her better as a boy, haha). But now, I want to watch it because JJH is in it, and he blew me away in The Devil. Then I started following news about him and I was devastated when he was caught using because I knew he would be banned from dramas and movies for quite a while (if not indefinitely). I think his plan is to make a comeback after his military service, and I hope that happens because the way he acted in The Devil makes me think he has so much potential to create great dramas.
YEH was the only reason I kept watching Goong. The whole palace politics I pretty ff most of the time. The manwha is much better imo, I think the series cut off exactly where the manwha got interesting so it was a bit of a shame.
speaking of Blood by Jeon Ji Hyun? anyone from UK or Paris? anyone seen it yet? any thoughts? I want to see it in big screen.
We watched the first 3 episodes of City Hall, and I am a little ambivalent.
I see potential, but I am a little underwhelmed right now. I will not say a negative thing, but I am not overly enthusiastic yet.
HOWEVER, this does not mean we will stop watching it. We will continue to watch for now. I am very hopeful it will get more interesting, but it is structurally difficult to make a plot point that is overarching for 16-20 episodes, and have it come up in the first few episodes, and, have it be interesting and fully developed. Understanding that, I think we can give City Hall a break, and keep an open mind for at least 4-5 more episodes..
@123, vere
I think I’m going to just go all in with my personal Joo Ji-hoon film festival and start watching The Devil. I don’t know why, but I’m leaning towards the darker stuff right now (Story of A Man, the Tdrama Black & White, Time Between Dog & Wolf). I’m going to work Snow Queen into the schedule (somehow) as well.
Brilliant Legacy/Shining Inheritance (why two names, anyway?) is sounding better and better the more I hear about it.
Triple, Partner, Friend….so much new stuff to look forward to! The only problem is that I’m so spoiled now to older dramas where every episode is readily available. Patience has never been one of my stronger qualities.
****Shout out to other Black & White fans – - – - just finished Episode 20 and IT IS SO GOOD!!! Only four left now (sob). Vic Zhou will always be my Taiwanese Sweetheart Number One, but Mark Chao is really phenomenal too. He flat out rocked this episode. Episode 18 wasn’t too shabby either (if you’ve seen it, then you know. ‘Nuff said).
samsooki,
gotta hand it to you with your song recs. they are great.
‘it’s alright’ by jang nara- listened to it so many times, i killed it. can’t listen to it anymore.
‘if’ in hong gil dong – just about to kill it.
and now ‘forever’.
i try not to listen to these songs over and over, but i can’t help it. i hate killing songs.
but i must say, next time i hit a noraebang, watch out… hahaha
@126 Samsooki
Keep watching Samsooki. You’ll feel rewarded once you get to ep 5-6 and after that, you might get hooked like all other City Hallers! I am ambivalent too when first starting CH due to the previous works of the scriptwriter and PD. I was totally hooked by ep 5. Now that after 14 episodes, I have to say this is the BEST EVER romantic comedy for me surpassing MNIKSS and My Girl – at equal ranking with Coffee Prince.
Its plotline is unusual and is not predictable as one would think. It does not have the many cliches of other Kdramas – no love triangle (well, there is arguably a technical one but not a real one), no evil second lead (not yet perhaps?). It is squarely the story of the two leads and how they change each other for the better. And you do have to watch carefully as the scriptwriter does put in lots of small points that might not seem important in the first place it but carry particular meaning later on.
The acting of both CSW and KSA is priceless. In fact, KSA has put up her best performance which can be attributed to CSW’s excellent, excellent performance. You can see here how a strong co-performer can bring out the best in both. This is my first time seeing CSW and after seeing his perfromance here, you just feel his acting is head and shoulder compared to many male leads in other Kdramas. Best couple and best chemistry!
@129, epyc,
I just finished Episode 7 of City Hall.
First three episodes I was like, “is this what KSA is reduced to?”
But then wow, it got better in a hurry, didn’t it? It took a serious turn and then bam, it got good and stuff.
I am officially a City Haller.
OMG the funniest line ever from KSA comes in Episode 7:
“Hey, you may not realize it, but my former boyfriend looked like Hyun Bin! And he told me that he wished he could carry me around in his pocket!”
I wonder how she could have said that line with a straight face. I was soooo surprised when I heard that… so funny.
**
@128, kb -
I have maybe two dozen songs like that – songs that I had put on infinite repeat until I found a new song that was just killer.
After you have killed Ahn Jae Wook’s forever, let me know and I’ll give you a few more songs at a time.
@samsooki
oh i have the bts for that scene, i think KSA did only once with a straight face..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riqxeCARaq0
i read that KSA is the Queen of NGs. i think it’s true.
@130 Samsooki :
Welcome to the City Hallers’ Club!
I knew it will hit you around ep 5 or 6. You’re on to ep 8 already? That was quick! Looks like you will catch up with all of us by the time Ep 15 and 16 air this week.
@127, langdon 813
Several people recommended The Devil and I did not regret watching it. The ratings did not do it justice and its storyline, acting, etc. was definitely better than expected. And I got hooked on the OST too.
I have also been watching older dramas. I have little patience waiting for the next episodes to be subbed. It’s worse when they stop subbing it and I’m left hanging. Now I only watch dramas with completed subbed episodes.
@128 kb
I just remembered a great song for the noh-reh-bang and for general singing while you listen. If you liked Ahn Jae Wook’s “Forever” you will like Kim Hyung Joong’s “그랬나봐” which is off of the OST for 2003 movie “The Classic” and is off of his first CD in 2003.
NOTE: the singler is NOT Kim Hyun Joong (김현중) or Kim Hyung Joon (김형준), both being from a boy band group SS501 and the former one of the F4 of BBF, but Kim Hyung Joong (김형중). LOL.
For reference, you can watch the MV from the The Classic which features the song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsDBa-bkrKc
Here are the lyrics if you can read Korean, if I have time tonight after work, I’ll translate.
(oh, and let me know if you can’t read korean, and I’ll add romanization)
@ AnitaLotti
PM me in soompi if you want the Star In My Heart dvd.
hey! how come you didn’t ask if I could borrow the Star DVDs!!
What else you got, other than dreams of KJH?
Thanks to Samsooki on the Open Thread #85 for describing why he loved MNIKSS, I picked up a boxset and watched it.
I was coming down from a Coffee Prince high and picked Winter Sonata which left me feeling draggy, depressed and meh. Along comes MNIKSS and boy, was it good. It picked me up, left me feeling so good about it and about life.
What was good? I don’t even know where to start.
First, coming from CP, I thought there were not a few similarities between MNIKSS and CP which I loved. Superficially – an improbable love, good scripting, good chemistry between the leads, a nice soundtrack, great acting all round – even from the supporting cast (okay, except for Daniel Henny but he’s too cute so he’s forgiven for being a bit wooden.
But I guess what I really liked was the ‘reality’ of it all – no pat happy ending but an ending which reflected what life is – full of uncertainty but embraced with a willingness to be risk happiness and sorrow in equal measures. The ride is half the fun after all.
Other small touches I liked, which I felt really reflected what real life is like:
1) KSS putting off skinship for two months until she loses enough weight. And the ‘bargaining’ that went on between her and JH on how much she’d lost (600g!) and how much longer he’d have to wait.
2) KSS being determined to start over by climbing Hallasan and then cursing and swearing as she neared the peak – BTDT! How many have climbed mountains, run marathons, joined gyms to make that Grand Gesture of Post-Break-up Recovery?
3) JH’s confusion and reluctance to hurt HJ even though he wants to be with KSS. How can you wipe away history like this? It sure hurts… And Hyun Bin’s acting translated that pain and indecision well.
4) The way that KSS curses and swears. Yes, she’s full of it. But in life, who isn’t? She’s so frank and honest and loud. Calls a spade a spade and I like her for that. Such a refreshing change from the old-style female lead characters in other K-dramas.
5) Loved the two mothers – the imposing President Na with a broken hurt and a soft spot, and the Sam-Soon’s fearless mother. The scene where they faced off – complete with hilarious kung-fu music – is a favourite. And the fight scenes – gosh, the little woman (she must be really small in real life!) hand-bag bashing the much taller Hyun Bin – LMAO!
6) And the OST – while not as indie as the CP OST, I still liked it. It had Jisun in it!! I was prepared to travel to the next country to get it until I found a dusty copy in a music store here yesterday and I have not stopped listening. Clazziquai and Alex – wow.
Okay, I’d better stop here. Sorry if I’m gushing, just so full of lurve for MNIKSS. I’m re-watching my favourite bits now. And while I’m actually on ep 4 of Hong Gil Dong, I think that has fallen by the wayside too while I try and get over MNIKSS.
@ hjkomo
Have to leave for work now in a hurry, but will contact you of course!
Thanks!
@137, mamacat-
I am glad you liked it!
I was wondering if you could share your views on the blind date guy who constantly gets trampled on by hyun bin butting in, not once, not twoce but three times? LOL. I thought it was funny of course, but in reality a lot of guys end up like that guy, and so I wanted to know how other ppl feel. As for me, I would have hated being the guy who always gets second place…
No second place in love…
Hmmm was going to rant about Cain and Abel/So Ji Sub but first must join the lovely MNIKSS conversation…..
@137 mamacat
Am glad you now know the lovely MNIKSS! There was so much to love wasn’t there? The spunk of a character in Kim Sam Soon – a character with ‘flaws’ that was was the not usual polite, perfect-woe-is-me damsel in distress. So nice to see that in a kdrama.
(the only thing that intially annoyed me was the whole KSS is ‘fat’ thing cause she actually looked healthy to me. But then that says more about how the standard for ‘norm’ is which is so unrealistic and unhealthy… Another reason to love MNIKSS)
MNIKSS is right there with ‘My Girl’ as my fav feel good, no ‘nose bleed = death’ series. Have to say, as much as Winter Sonata was one of my early favs (watched prior to MNIKSS), probably the worst to watch in proximity with CP and MNIKSS! Light and so fun v’s oh so teary. (gotta say WS still holds a special place in my heart as it was one of my 1st kdramas that got me hooked + I’m a huge sook!)
That OST – awesome. And congrats on discovering Clazzquai! Highly remember you check out Alex and Horan’s solo stuff too.
Word of warning: Hong Gil Dong has a lot of things to love too. Please remember though that KJH (aka HGD) has previously been claimed.
@139 Samsooki
Re: Blind Date guy
(while you did ask for mamacat thoughts here is my 2 cents…)
Felt soooo bad for him, cause he seemed like such a nice guy! To have JH/Hyun Bin as your competition. That’s a tough one. Even tougher if my heart was just still full of JH too.
Given how immature some of JH’s actions had been, esp if I had thought he had left/forgotten me without a word, am not sure if I could/would have allowed myself to be dragged out of the car that 3rd time. While I am normally non violent person – I might have decked JH one in the carpark! That might have also caused Blind Date man to run a mile. But if he was still game would at least continued on that date. It would be the least I could do. Besides he was so kind as not to run, and given how arseholic JH behaved who knows…. …
Fantasy? Maybe.
Perhaps there is no second place in love – but that is not to say I can’t love this nice good guy as a friend right?
@ 120 lovenyc52
i got the uploading done this morning. email me: lovebird_tmi@yahoo.com or leave me a msg @ youtube acct: lovebirdtmi and i’ll get you a few links
seems that we’re stalking, i mean following, the 2PM boys at seoulbeats too.. haha
samsooki,
‘the classic’ song didn’t hook me like the other three on the first listen. i’m currently listening to it for the third time right now. thank you for the lyrics. i can read korean but comphrehension needs much improvement.
i hear you about songs good for the noraebang. i think i’d probably split some unfortunate eardrums if i tried to sing ‘if.’
re post #139
i never saw mnikss, but i can just imagine the scene. if i was the other guy, i would approach the situation objectively. what is my date’s reaction to the intrusion? if she is bothered by the intrusion, then i would just put hyun bin in his place and send him on his way.
however, if my date enjoys the intrusion, then at that point she is disrespecting me, and i will leave my date to hyun bin. if this was the outcome, i do not consider this to being in ’second place.’ this only means she was not the right person for me at this time. loyalty is key for me. if she can’t show common respect on the first date, i certainly wouldn’t expect her to show loyalty at some time in the near future if i were to keep chasing her. i didn’t come in ’second place’ because she really wasn’t the ‘grand prize.’
truthfully speaking, if i were in this scene, i would be humored by the situation. i would feel honored that hyun bin thought enough of my date to try to hit on her three times. if my date actually enjoyed hyun bin’s intrusion, then my attraction to her would be absolutely zero, so i would not feel that i lost anything.
this is my perspective now. if this question was posed several years ago when my self-confidence was not the best, there would have been a lot of self-pity going on, and yes, i would have felt that i came in ’second place’ to the more charismatic hyun bin. putting humility aside, now, i consider myself the prize, for better or worse.
i have come in ’second place’ many times in my past, and the feeling just plain sucks. this has led to my work in self-improvement. i am still not where i would like to be, but i am getting there.
i hope my imagined scene was true to the actual scene in mnikss. if not, i’m sorry for the long and rambling post.
OK now back to my original plans for a rant…..
Cain and Abel – So Ji Sub
Just finished it and So Ji Sub has now offically joined his “Rough Cut’ co-star in being MINE MINE MINE! Had previously never really understood the fuss (just based on seeing pics of him) until I actually WATCHED him in motion in ‘Rough Cut’. Since then the M!M!M! has spread so fast I caught MISA and C & A within 2-3 wks.
Getting to the point where I am checking out out his vintage stuff. Must try to remember the tip from previous open thread to stay far far far away from ‘Thousand Years of Love’ – even if it does tempt me with Sung Yuri as a co-star. Lucky for me so far have not seen a English subbed edition. Yet..
In light of JB’s comment that spoilers..hmmm …er…spoiled it for others re: ‘Story of a Man’ (lucky I read the recaps – which I am so loving and can’t wait to watch it myself – and missed the spoilers) I hope I won’t spoil Cain and Abel for those who have not watched/plan to/currently watching it.
Warning: Possible Spoiler (???) for Cain and Abel below…….so if you intend to or currently watching please look away……

OK For those who have watched it:
How does one explain the shift from love to hate that one character undergoes? The shift from how it was in Episode 1 to something else was so extreme and seemed so sudden to me. And the ‘reasons’ to explain the said shift had me thinking ‘WTF? No! No really it can’t be?’
BTW is it possible to find a a man like LCI? Does such a mythical creature exist? If you know of one please tell them to call me ok?
Also found this fan MV in Soompi and loved it

(end spoiler)
For those lucky New Yorkers attending the showing of ‘Rough Cut’- can you please tell SJS that he is one awesome actor. Oh also tell him while I can’t be in NYC I’m still very interested in checking out whether those scars were real, touching his abs and if I could still have his (and please make that now) AND KJH’s number? Thanks a bunch!….LOL
Oh dear – really I need a cure for this kdrama addiction. It really really REALLY is getting out of hand…..
Tempted to check out ‘Star in my Heart’ based on that clip above! Must try hard not to venture near the DVD shop. Must resist. Junkies needs to keep away from temptation. This will only work if I stick to my masterplan of ONLY just getting my mitts on ‘Story of a Man’, City Hall (all this MNIKSS talk and postive raves in this thread alone)….that;s it.
Must resist.
….but HAVE to watch ‘Triple,’……
…….oh and ‘Partners…… OK no more.
Damn it!!!! Why is 2009 looking like a great kdrama year!
hmm ok just ….’Iris’ …..and ….’Swallow the Sun’…..
Must resist. Resist. Resist…
….oh and of course must not forget the Telecinema projects esp since it has a KJH one……..
.
Hell the Borg were right! Resistance is futile!
2009 = the year I am totally look like a Panda.
LOL to @140 bspanda.
LOL to @142 kb.
LOL to @143 bspanda.
Sorry about the lack of words, but I am swamped with work today, and that, and client meetings, keeping up with dramabeans posts, and trying to backread 30 pages of City Hall thread on Soompi, and trying to leave for home at a decent hour so I can watch episodes 11-13 of City Hall tonight……
@ bspanda
LOL!
Resistance IS futile…why even bother?
Just give in to the dark side and join the rest of us sleep-deprived pandas and raccoons.
@140 bspanda
agree with the KSS ‘fat’ issue. She’s actually healthy looking and normal. But still, the contrast with other K leading ladies is clear. The serial made me, your average mildly tubby girl with the love handles, actually feel really good and a bit more confident about myself.
When I watch this and compare with Kim Ah Joong in the 200lb Beauty, I think MNIKSS gives a healthier body image all round – though I have to say 200lb Beauty also did not make me feel ‘fat’ (despite the plastic surgery = beauty ideal message).
I thought Jung Ryo Won looked anorexic in MNIKSS. She looked really, really stick thin! Is this just me?
Re WS – yes, oh so teary – had all the cliches – the half-sib possibility, the separation, the parental objections, the brain tumour (a haematoma in this case!), the blindness etc (which worked well since Bae Yong Joon could not see Choi Ji Woo’s horrible hair extensions LOL!). The angst! The pathos! I felt exhausted just watching the barrage of emotions. Yet, the thing abt MNIKSS is not that it lacked the barrage of emotions – but it was nicely handled. You got the feeling that life was not all bad and KSS’ optimism and stoicism to get on with life despite the disappointments was really bracing.
Yes to Horan too! Fell in love with her ver of I Only Know Love when JB posted this on the BOF site.
@139 Samsooki
The Blind Date Guy – gee, I really felt for him, poor guy. I actually thought he was kinda cute too and had it not been Hyun Bin butting in all three times, he wouldn’t have looked too bad with KSS. Notice though, that in all 3 dates, KSS never really was her usual bold, sassy, loud self – she projected the demure miss look and demeanour. Which I thought was not really her at all. So would it have worked with them? On the other hand, it was oon myung wasn’t it? Wasn’t it also fate to have met him three times? That aside, the bun in the oven line seemed to be Hyun Bin’s favourite line – he used it on the Blind Date Guy, his mom AND KSS’ mom! Said with straight face too. Loved these little touches.
I re-watched ep 8 of MNIKSS after all the comments on the Open Thread. And went on watching… and watching… so it looks like I’m re-watching the whole thing, darn it! When am I ever going to get over this?
While the kids are hooked on Hong Gil Dong (yes, I have made fellow K-addicts out of my kids – bad mommy that I am!) I have been rather distractedly giving it cursory looks. KJH looks delectable but I still heart Gong Yoo. Ah that bod!! That grin!!

I am Borg.
Panda Kdrama Borg.
How kdrama Borg? Well when I opened Dramabeans and realised immediately that I had not added ‘He Who Can’t Marry’ to my ‘masterplan’! Defense – zilch. Gone. Borg.
Hmmm does that make my fellow commentors on Dramabeans the (Panda) Collective?? Is Javabeans the Borg Queen? I mean her recaps are awesome, her recommendations are often spot on and a bulk of my recent kdramas are culled from this blog. She leads I follow….
(OK will stop with the ST references now)
@146 Mamacat
Jung Ryo Won sort of looked right for the part she played in MNIKSS ie the anorexic/stomach cancer storyline. The frightening part is she appears to have gotten even skinner, and unhealthier looking every since. THAT is a worry. She really needs a KSS in real life to make her eat!
Re: WS – I think BYJ went blind not only to avoid seeing CJW’s hair, but also his own. That burnt orange! OMFG! @_@ ouch my eyeballs are still complaining when I think about it. Perhaps the hair stylist on that show was going blind….
MNIKSS had tears and laughter. WS was more like a flood. Definitely not one to watch if one wants to cheer up…
Music/YT – on a roll with YT so here is some more….
(BTW have no idea what the lyrics actually mean (help Korean speakers?) but love them regardless)
A nice collaboration between Suho and Kim Bum Soo ‘부재중 전화’ has snuck onto my kdramaOST leaning playlist. Added bonus was when I checked YT if there was a MV and it had Lee Dong Wook! (however not loving the overly fuzzy upper lip). With upcoming Partners well had to share
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vknZLcwjbj8
Another fav from a few years ago by Suho (again with LDW, but this time less fuzzy) 봄 여름 가을…겨울 (feat Kim Tae Woo)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4SDHViE_lE
And this one is for Samsooki….
Kim Bum Soo’s Memory MV with BINNIE and Lee Da Hae
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8WYie9i24w
(Is it the snow? Or is it cause I see keep thinking LDH looks like Yuri? Doesn’t it look like it could have come from Snow Queen?)
OK now this Borg has to do some actual work, work…*sigh* if only discussing kdramas was a paying job.
@146, mamacat -
That is wonderful commentary on the blind date guy. Well done.
I’ve seen MNIKSS many many times, and I never once noted to myself that Samsoonie was actually being all nice, demure and cutesy, which, while probably not all acting, was a little bit like that to in order to “get” the blind date guy. You are right, she never really just let herself be herself in front of the blind date guy.
By contrast, Samsoonie never pretended to be someone else to Binnie, and so Binnie always knew exactly what he liked about Samsoonie,.
HOWEVER, the blind date guy was no fool, and it wasn’t that the blind date was thinking, “oh, it’s that cutesy demure laugh behind the hand that makes me fall for Samsoonie / Heejin.” The blind date guy saw the special-ness of Samsoonie too, but it wasn’t meant to be. Not because he never saw the real Samsoonie, but because Samsoon liked Binnie and you can’t have a relationship if it isn’t mutual.
I think the blind date guy got shafted, personally.
But since I am all for Binnie and KSA (Sunbin, ftw), I can’t blame either of them. Sorry. Sometimes, the nice guys end up in second place.
so i was skimming through episodes of mnikss and i was able to find one of the blind date scenes in episode 10.
i thought kim samsoon would be entertained by hyun bin’s intrusion, but she wasn’t. i should’ve known better. this was similar to the blind date scenes in ‘my sassy girl,’ except with gender role reversal.
in my original post, i didn’t realize that the blind date guy was already emotionally invested in kim samsoon. when that happens, well, there are winners and losers. unfortunately, it’s the nice and naive guy who finishes second here. live and learn.
@148 Samsooki
Thanks! High praise indeed coming from you since I’m a newbie at the k-drama addiction!
Have to also add that I think the desire to change her name – from the coarse Sam-Soon to the girly ‘Hee Jin’ parallels her cutesy behavior while on the blind dates. But of course this is not the real Sam Soon and Hyun Bin knew this. Hence he loved her warts and all and was never in favour of her changing her name. She was not a ‘Hee Jin’ish type of girl. She was exactly Sam Soon.
And this is also part of what I liked about her and MNIKSS. That Sam-Soon was fallible too – she too had her insecurities but the good thing is, she never let them get her down, and in the end, she also found the courage to accept herself, her name and life for what it was, taking the chance on the happy-ever-after and yet being real enough to know that it might or might not last, but game to go for the ride anyway.
Re the Blind Date Guy being shafted – yeah well, love’s like that. But I was glad to see that he stood up to Hyun Bin in the last ep. At least he wasn’t a total wimp – after all, how many guys would stomach this sort of thing three times in a row without saying anything?
@bspanda,
“Kim Bum Soo’s Memory MV with BINNIE and Lee Da Hae
(Is it the snow? Or is it cause I see keep thinking LDH looks like Yuri? Doesn’t it look like it could have come from Snow Queen?)”
What a great MV. The song is average, but the video is just awesome. Lee Da Hae is so pretty and I love her optimistic visage.
But what is it about Hyun Bin that makes girls die these terrible sad deaths in the winter time? Perhaps he should stick to liking girls in the summer time, like Kim Sam Soon.
@kb,
You should watch MNIKSS from the beginning. It isn’t a typical k-drama, and maybe that turns off certain people because the main character tends to be a little rough edged and not a typical beauty. But what I liked about Samsoon (the woman character) was her depth of feeling and integrity, among other things. It is a solid base from which she can grow (in any infinite number of directions). I say this as a bit of advice for you, to recognize those elements in other people.
The nice guy finishes second here, and I think it is a good lesson to learn but the outcome could have been reversed early in the drama series and who knows whether Samsoon would have been just as happy in the long run. We know now that she was meant to be with Hyun Bin at the end, but in our own lives, we don’t have the luxury of being able to look ahead to the future and then back to the present to see what we should do.
You are not meant to finish second in your own life, and so when I say that that blind date guy got shafted, I mean that early on, he lost out unjustly and if that were you, the lesson is not to have let that person go so easily.
samsooki,
‘the lesson is not to have let that person go so easily.’
this is some sound advice. it resonates with me. i absolutely agree, some things are definitely worth fighting for. but knowing which ones to fight is the dicey question.
her affected front towards blind date guy notwithstanding, it appears samsoon gives clear indication her interests lie in hyun bin. in ep 10, to believe hyun bin when he tells her that one of the bakery workers is hurt, even though she knows he is manipulative and cunning, is very telling, given the fact that she’s been telling the blind date guy all this time to not believe anything hyun bin is saying (he’s crazy).
at this moment after she runs away with hyun bin with nary a good-bye, if i were the blind date guy, it’s over. forget it. i don’t care if she was the prettiest girl i’ve ever seen. this battle is not worth fighting. there is too much emotional baggage. perhaps a relationship could’ve worked in the future, but i am not willing to wait for that. as i said in post 142, she is not the right person for me at this time.
and here, i believe, is where you and i have a difference in opinion. in one of your posts in a previous thread, an issue arose as to whether or not your wife’s brother should commit to a long distance relationship. if i recall correctly, you believed there is only one right mate for each of us, while your wife believed otherwise. i am with your wife on this one. if i were the blind date guy, maybe samsoon is the ‘one’ for me; fortunately, i believe there are others out there who can fulfill the role of the ‘one.’ i would move on because samsoon has clearly shown by her actions that she is more interested in hyun bin. if a relationship was truly meant to be, then she can contact me when her life is in order. i will not wait until that time.
as a ‘nice guy’ myself, i cringe when i hear the phrase ‘nice guys finish last,’ as if a guy lost out on a girl just because he was nice. the ‘nice’ guys lose out because they are needy, uninteresting, or just plain naive. in the case of the blind date guy, he didn’t have much of a chance from the get-go. samsoon was never able to disentangle herself emotionally from hyun bin.
so back to the original question, what girl is worth fighting for? besides the obvious (meaning intial attraction), i believe it’s a girl who gives an indication that she is willing to commit to a relationship by words and actions (key word being ‘indication,’ as it’s tough to fully commit after one or two dates). at that point, i am willing to bust through all obstacles, and then let the chips fall as they may. in the case of samsoon, although she spoke a lot of the right words, her actions belied the truth.
EDIT
last sentence should read
‘her actions showed the truth.’ misused the word ‘belied’
@hjkomo
Seems I cannot PM you, as you do not exist. I will try and find the mistake in my account settings first, because this is clearly a case of “you post therefore you are”…
@kb,
“‘nice’ guys lose out because they are needy, uninteresting, or just plain naive. in the case of the blind date guy, he didn’t have much of a chance from the get-go. samsoon was never able to disentangle herself emotionally from hyun bin. “
But that’s not his fault, is it? he wasn’t needy, uninteresting or naive. He was just too nice…? What if he had stood up, at the first meeting, disengaged HB’s hand from Samsoon’s wrist, and said, “I’m sorry, but you aren’t wrecking my blind date meeting with this wonderfully intriguing woman.”
At that point, Samsoon was not into HB, and HB was only screwing around because it amused him. Then the nice guy blind date guy would have had a much different life, and My Name Is Kim Sam Soon would have been a 2 episode arc…
“so back to the original question, what girl is worth fighting for? besides the obvious (meaning intial attraction), i believe it’s a girl who gives an indication that she is willing to commit to a relationship by words and actions (key word being ‘indication,’ as it’s tough to fully commit after one or two dates). at that point, i am willing to bust through all obstacles, and then let the chips fall as they may. in the case of samsoon, although she spoke a lot of the right words, her actions showed the truth.
I guess so. But I disagree with your conclusion. What girl is worth fighting for? Any girl that you believe is “right” for you is worth fighting for (of course, I advise caution in the determination of who is right for you). Why? Because who knows what will happen in the future. If you press the case only for those women who show reciprocal interest in you, then you are eliminating the possibility that those women could possibly be wrong about you.
How can you know whether that girl will be willing to commit to a relationship with you, unless you first press the issue. If it turns out that you were wrong and she is not right for you, then fine, at least you gave it a shot. And if it turns out that you were right, then you took a chance and found success.
But if you drop the ball before even getting into the game, then you will never find success.
That’s why the blind date guy should have pressed the issue in Episode 2. He would have had NO idea what kind of woman that Sam Soon is, but without trying, he never really got to find out. Then, Samsoon fell for HB, and the blind date guy became a running joke, only to be pitied.
samsooki,
i didn’t see episode 2, and i had assumed samsoon was emotionally tied to hyun bin before she first met blind date guy. my error.
in terms of the ‘nice’ issue, i should’ve said nice guys don’t lose out on girls because they are ‘nice’; rather, they lose out if they are needy, uninteresting, naive, or in the case of blind date guy, spineless. just because you’re nice doesn’t mean you have to be spineless too. it seems people lump all these unfavorable characteristics together and call it ‘nice.’ actual nice guys without these unfavorable characteristics can play the game too.
i see your point about pursuing and fighting for whoever you feel is right.
i really didn’t feel much empathy for blind date guy previously because i wrongly assumed that hyun bin had samsoon’s heartstrings at his fingertips before he even came into the picture. it was unreasonable to expect blind date guy to win. now that i realize he made an egregious mistake in ep. 2, well, i’ll drop a tear in a bucket for him.
i wasn’t able to watch episode 2 before my post 156 because my computer crashed on download, but i just finished watching the blind date scene. funny stuff.
after watching that scene, not only would i call blind date guy spineless, i wouldn’t exactly call him an actual nice guy either. he stops in traffic to help some stranger in an accident, but he won’t help his own date who was in obvious distress? he walks out while she’s screaming and kicking? this isn’t even about fighting for a woman. this is just common decency. i retract all my statements about ‘if i was blind date guy,’ because after watching ep 2, i don’t think blind date guy deserves samsoon.
so he made the conscious decision to walk out. fine. he rejects samsoon. so what in the world is he thinking when he greets samsoon in ep 10?
running joke? he deserves it. to be pitied? no way. i want my tear in the bucket back.
kb,
Go to soompi.com and register for the forums if you don’t already have an account there. Then PM me at soompi (my handle on soompi is also samsooki) your email address. I’ll respond back to you with a beta invite to dramafever.com, which a lot of korean dramas in HQ streaming, with subs. dramafever has MNIKSS, for example. The website has permission for all the dramas it streams, and it is sort of like hulu.com, but for korean dramas (so it has a few commercials).
dramafever, at this point, does not charge any fees for watching its dramas, and only has very limited commercial interuptions.
