DBSK’s Yunho to make acting debut

Ha! Just days after refuting the rumors, it has been announced that 23-year-old DBSK singer U-Know Yunho is indeed making his acting debut in the soccer drama Heading to the Ground [맨땅에 헤딩].
The singer, born Jung Yun-ho, takes on the character of “Cha Bong-kun,” a role recently vacated by Kim Rae-won because of Kim’s mandatory army obligation. To achieve the impossible goal of making it as a national player, the character pours all his passion into realizing the dream. While he “has nothing to his name, the drama tells the miraculous success story of passionate soccer player Cha Bong-kun.”
U-Know Yunho said of the role, “I really like the character of Cha Bong-kun. Reading the script, my heart overflowed with emotion. I want to act that feeling with sincerity.”
Heading to the Ground follows the Wednesday-Thursday horror drama Hon on MBC and premieres on September 9. No confirmation yet on the casting of his love interest, although Go Ara remains in contention

Hmm, from Kim Raewon to Yunho? That’s awfully bizarre change.
Actually, Ara is confirmed now. LOL
eh, this could be interesting with Yunho in it!
Whoa. So, another SM drama? Hmm. I hope this ends up well.
Or well, decent at least? I’m a fan of Yunho so I mean, he’s humble.
yahoooo! This will be interesting – I was kind of rooting for Yunho to get his role. Ara is young and tall and Yunho is young and tall. Now let’s see if the drama will make a good actor of Yunho.
Yunho needs his rest!
YAY!!!!!!
Ara and Yunho unite! lol (dork here)
[...] a bonus, here is a bit of interesting news: Dong Bang Shin Ki’s Yunho is making his acting debut with the soccer drama, Heading to the Gro… None of the DBSK guys impressed me with their acting in the Banjun dramas, but hey… maybe [...]
what is on his neck >___>
^ a scar from surgery
he’s going to be so so tired. pls let this drama be short!
Not gonna lie, I love me some Yun-ho. So yes, this has officially been added to my dl schedule.
I wish him the best of luck. I’m not expecting much but it would be nice if he surprises us all.
First reaction?
*groans*
Not that i’m bashing him but i wonder if he has even started on acting classes yet?
That banjun drama of TVXQ’s burns my eyes to this day. It’s like they were all trying so hard to hold in their laughter, it’s not even funny anymore. Worse still, i was so afraid that jaejoong would go off half way and ask “what was i supposed to say?” on screen just because he couldn’t remember his lines Just awesomely bad acting and extremely bad news for all the lesser known peeps who CAN act and have been training and going for classes for years & years…
The best the could find is a guy in the IDOL business to act REALLY? !?! I really would like to see Kim Rae Won’s reaction when he heard this piece of news. It’s like an indirect slap to his face…isn’t it?
In the first place, it is kind of my wish that TVXQ improve/maintain some form of standard in singing since they DO call themselves singers.
The least of my expectations are singers who CAN sing before they wonder off to do all sorts of other stuffs trained or untrained.
All i can say is, this guy has got his work cut out for him. He had better work his ass off to make up for the lost years in training and acting school.
Yunho and Ara… mmm I’d take that. But I really hope Yunho will do well or else.. I don’t know, hell will come lol jk.
Both Yunho and Jaejoong have a drama, I wonder when will the other members hop on the boat too lol.
cool!
oh my godd!
he’s going to be hella tired.
: x
i just wish it was changmin doing this though.
sldsjlsfd. hehe
yunho did take some acting classes in unnie..i hope that his act has improved.
anyways, ara + yunho ^^
cant wait to see it….this must be why he went back to korea recently.
Hmm…I’m not sure what to say really.
I feel like this is a very sudden decision. I think that it would have been better for Yunho to take a smaller project–maybe even a smaller role first before headlining a drama. While he does have charisma, the only roles that he has done have been cheesy, over-the-top roles without much depth–and that was 2-3 years ago.
I’m a big fan of Yunho and will probably end up watching this just to see the results, but I’m nervous. I have no doubt that he’ll go into the role with 200% effort so I’m crossing my fingers.
What a disappointment. I wish they would’ve casted a real actor w/experience.
I really hope this isn’t Kim Hyun Joong all over again. Sure, Yunho has the look, but will he bring the acting? I hope.
hmmm…honestly…I was hoping for Su Ji Suk, he’s actually a soccer player… he played Iceman from Pure 19.
First time for everything.
O.O
Well, from the acting tid bits I’ve seen from him recently, he’s not too bad.
Maybe while he’s acting, perhaps the rumor of Jaejoong in the project group might be true, and Yoochun/JaeJoong will perform their duets~
Although I don’t take their acting from Banjun dramas seriously because in those dramas, nobody acts seriously in that serious.. maybe because it’s not an actual drama series? And since it’s not a real drama, the actors don’t think about putting their best or worry about the ratings, and the script is pretty comical and light anyways.
@ Biscuit
I know what you mean. i too feel that way and tend not to take it too seriously
But it’s real sad when you put Andy (shinhwa) and mc mong next to TVXQ and than feel so strongly about the bursting out laughing and forgetting lines part, the only conclusion as far as i’m concerned is, TVXQ can’t act to save their own lives.
At least with andy and mc mong, (mind you both are singers by profession, people whom i think aren’t suitable for acting) i could see the effort and the “seriousness” as in at least they know they’re on the job and that somebody’s gonna watch the end product of their work.
The effort & “seriousness” i couldn’t see from TVXQ…its almost like because its banjun, they pretty much went with the flow, it came off to me as slip-shod work which i didn’t get with the peeps i stated as examples.
To go from a banjun drama (which everybody knows NOT to take seriously) with half-assed i’m am almost going to burst out laughing on-screen while the camera is still rolling to this serious acting debut for Yunho is really stretching it for me.
Nevertheless, I would wish he prove me wrong and shut me up with his acting
Nothing i figured will speak louder than that…
oppa marry me your so hot <3 hes mine no touchy lol <3 <3 <3 love u oppa
@ Pencils:
“In the first place, it is kind of my wish that TVXQ improve/maintain some form of standard in singing since they DO call themselves singers.”
What do you mean by that exactly? Are you saying ‘they’re good singers so they should stick to that’ or are you saying ‘they’re bad singers so they should try to improve before doing anything else’? Hopefully you mean the former because TVXQ are kind of known for their vocals (they did start out as an acapella group after-all)….the dancing and good-looks are just a bonus. *ahem*
Anyway, I’m kind of disappointed that they chose him for this. I adore Yunho and would love to see him back in Korea but he’s not (or rather he wasn’t) the best actor and unless he’s been receiving lessons I don’t see how he could have found time to improve in these last hectic two years. :/ Oh well, hopefully he’ll prove me wrong.
I just hope that he won’t be the victim of prejudice.
somehow, I really love this pairing. :p merely for selfish reasons
Give both of them a chance-both are young and beautiful, maybe this can attract the attention.
But found strange, why all the experience actor/actress withdraw from this project ang give it to younger one-idol drama maybe. Read in the news actually the finalist for actress were Lee Da hae and Han Ga In, both not intersted to join in because KRW rejected it also.
I’m looking very forward to this…..they both don’t have real acting experience so I don’t have high expectations, but I’m still very excited to watch it…..I don’t get how people can be so judgemental and discouraging against others that are from a different part of the entertainment field and trying something new….i mean people need to start somewhere…DBSK have already conquered Asia with their singing/dancing abilities so it’s good to see them want to grow and branch out to different things…obviously their acting isn’t great, because they didn’t get to have all the classes and training that real actors get…it works both ways…it’s like asking a really good actor to sing and most of the time the results are far from good….but oh well, at least they worked hard and tried their best (at least I know that YH will)….some people here need to grow up and not kick people before they even get up to walk…*thud*…I see this as a great learning experience for yunho and I’ll support him all the way no matter what=)
@ cherry
I meant a little of both.
In this whole array of singers and entertainers, they are lump right there in the middle with everybody else ie. average in my dictionary. I have listened to them sing acapella and live. I have to be brutally honest with my opinion there. It’s not that they are bad but rather there are peeps out there e.g. isu from mc the max, sung si kyung, alex from clazziqual, wheesung. Some of which can really carry a tune and some of them can sing a variety of genres. so i think it’s fair comment to say that because they are average therefore they still need to work hard to improve themselves. This is their rice bowl and i think for any profession, the recognition that there is always something to improve, somebody to catch up to helps justify why you chose the job in the first place & why you find it gratifying.
As for the part that IF i say they were fantastic singers than I don’t know how having to do some serious acting with lots of catchup work will help in the CONSTANT maintenance of Yunho singing abilities. Look at it realistically, if i were him, I’m taking this huge step in diversifying my career than i better devote 100% of my energy at it. Naturally, what happens is, the number of hours I devote to singing in 24 hours would be drastically reduced. Granted, some of you might say, Yunho has the talent and therefore he CAN have it all.
But what i dislike about people who tend to straddle all forms of entertainment for prolonged periods of time is that, what they originally could do very well has now gone down a notch and what they are trying to do now just ends up average.
Case in point: Rain.
I’m like woah, this guy is a jack of all trades and master of none huh?
Makes me feel like if he were to drop the fashion designing, the artiste management thing give the job to somebody who is TRAINED to do so, get the guy on board his company, will I see a Rain that is a singer and an actor that people would no longer just lump as idol and take him seriously. If he really could do that, i’ll take my hats of him because he knows what he is good at, that he is no longer at a phase where he (on a very superficial level) seems to be proving to everybody he can do A-Z himself.
A good CEO knows what he is good at and hires the best peeps to do what he’s not good at. Only then will the business and the person who created by taken seriously.
Bottom line: Entertainers/singers/actors, TVXQ, Yunho, Rain, Seven etc etc are all human beings are equally capable, for a lack of a better word, be average.
If you have talent at entertaining that’s a plus, if you know you don’t have talent but are willing to learn and train to built up your acting/singing chops. The audience will SEE that although you are not the best in the bunch but you certainly know what you want and would applaud you for that ONE thing you want to do good in. No need to go to such extremes to do everything from A-Z.and that’s where i think management companies sometime miscalculate.
As the bad guy from Mr Incredible says ” if everybody is special than nobody is”
A person who is confident of his job will not and does not need constant in-your-face confirmation of his worth externally. All of that confidence would have already been there in him already. Case in point: Jay Chou & Kanye West. That guy knows he has the talent and boy does he consistently deliver. It means something when the entire world knowing that he has one heck of a cocky attitude but continue to buy his album. It makes it all the sweeter when you have your peers acknowledge you for your work (that i think is better than any award)
I certainly hope as i’ve said that Yunho can shut me up with his acting but i also hope that he does not burn both ends of the candle such that he is bleh at everything he does.
Sorry about the essay. But yeah. Just my 20 cents worth
Hope you guys
Thanks for the news!
I pretty much adore Yunho to death and am naturally excited for this, but I’m also quite worried about how he’s gonna pull it off. It isn’t just if his acting is up to par (just the fact that he’s a member of an idol group, and DBSK no less, means he’ll have to deal with a ton of criticism and naysayers and even fans that don’t think he’s ready for this), but whether he can handle acting in this drama AND being a DBSK member. (Although… Yunho always puts DBSK before anything else, so he knows what he’s getting into when he signed on for this role; he must feel that he can act in this drama AND not have that affect DBSK’s activities.)
One thing for sure, though, Yunho will work himself really hard; he’s always been that way. I hope all those efforts pay off! I’m nervous for him, but am hoping for the best. <3
First Son Dam Bi, and now U-know Yun Ho…What’s wrong with Korean drama people lately, are they running out of potential candidate for the leading role ? Or are they just want a “short path” to gain more viewer (rating) by recruit someone popular ?
This kind of formula has been applied for Cinderella Man and without so much succeed, so hearing that the leader of “the most popular boy band in Korea” will take the leading role make me giddy. Don’t get me wrong, I like Yun Ho…but as a singer. And this “appointment” is too soon IMO since his acting hasn’t been proven yet. I think he should take a supporting role first, to gain some more experiences, before take a big step. This “appointment” can backfire him if the result (rating) isn’t what they’ve been expected. And to think that this drama will be broadcasted after Soul, competing with Swallow the Sun & My Fair Lady (‘groan’)…unless they (Production team & TV channel) do not have much expectation on this drama (you know what I mean).
@pencils, agree with you on the “a jack of all trades and master of none”. I think, although an actress/singer has many talent they have to choose which one they really like or they good at, and to know about their limitation also. And that’s what I call a “wise act”.
so with all the fuss of dongbangshingi in japan, i wonder if they’ve already sold this drama to japan already.
@ pencils : I agree with you,,
)
sorry I don’t want to insult anyone, but for me yunho has to improve his “singing” ability first before takes a huge step into drama, well for me kim rae won to yunho is such a joke, we all know kim rae won’s ability but yun ho? I doubt that
I think it’s all about rating…rating…and rating (I do believe that dbsk’s fans will put a lot of efforts to make his debut success)
I’m not a huge fan of dbsk, sorry but for me as pencils said before, they still have to improve their capabilities, trust me they don’t have enough time anymore, there are a lot of newbies (almost of them can’t sing properly, but gained a lot of popularity
that will take over dbsk’s place, for me yunho should at least establishes his name under a good singer first
Yunho is cute. And from DBSK so I guess it should help the ratings. Then again, unless the storyline and acting are able to hold the viewer’s attention, the rating could suffer since it’s going against My Fair Lady who has a strong cast and been getting a lot of hype. I’m assuming Yunho plays some soccer at least?
Kim Rae Won – Han Ga In to YunHo – Go Ara? hmmmmm….
blame it on BOF’s im Hyun Joong heehee I guess MBC is banking on the idol formula to win in the ratings game, however HJ was in the company of LMH, GuHyeSun & Kim Bum who are all good actors so all KHJ had to do was look good.
I really hope that he will pull this off. I wish they would have paired him with a better actress though.
whoa! Sept will see battle of singers turned actors on the small screen ….. YEH-Sung Yuri-YunHo-Ryu ShiWon-Kim Hye Sun-Son Dambi.
Anybody who knows DBSK knows leader ssi puts 110% into everything he does, I’m sure he wouldn’t have taken this job lightly. At the same time, I never really thought of him as having big aspirations for acting. If anything, Changmin seems the most natural actor… and I’m sure Junsu will be jealous simply because of his love for soccer. ^^ They’ve become so big in both Korea and Japan, Midas Touch and all, I guess maybe the sudden acting buzz is because they want to start from scratch with something, a new challenge? I do think some of you guys up there aren’t giving them enough credit with their singing, they’re definitely above idol level.
i will be waiting for this.
*Bangs head on keyboard*
God is this a joke? Sorry to DBSK fans but I don’t think he’ll be able to fill Kim Rae Won’s shoes. I hope I’m wrong about this cause I do like Go Ara (though she annoys me sometimes lol), she’s a good actress =]
But Yunho T_T I was hoping the Rae Won replacement would get me more excited but guess not…
*sigh* I’m still gonna give him and the drama a chance but not expecting anything =/
I don’t know whether I’m going to be excited about this drama. I love Yunho a lot as the leader and member of DBSK. As a group, they are already good in what they do. However, delving into the acting world is another matter. I already had my reservations when Jaejoong was casted in heaven’s postman and up until now, even though I’m a die-hard fan, I wouldn’t hesitate to criticize them if their acting is not at par. I would rather hear them sing than cringe at their mediocre acting. But I would still watch this drama to support Yunho. I hope it doesn’t fail me. *nervous*
so actors are all dead now? seriously, the industry is small enough without having all the idols flood to the small screen. I guess with his huge following this drama is already a scucces, greedy producers telling thier banker they hit the jackpot.
I loved DBSK’s Banjun Dramas, it was hilarious, but I would rather see this drama with Kim Rae Won because he’s amazing and I’m sure he wouldn’t fail.
Yunho seems to be the best actor among DBSK members, but I say this only based on their Banjun Dramas and Candid Camera pranks where Yunho had to fool some of his members. But this doesn’t quality as acting experience… So… His REAL acting skills are a big question mark.
Besides that, Go Ara is not the greatest actress of all which means she won’t be able to cover Yunho’s inexperience. So if Yunho fails to deliver, we won’t have a 2nd actor making this drama work. And yeah… I’m pretty sure Go Ara will be in this drama, specially now that Yunho was confirmed. It shows SM ent will be probably producing the show, which means they won’t lose the chance to cast one of their actresses.
It seems like ‘맨땅에 헤딩’ will be another drama aimed to fangirls of idol-groups.
PS: Although I’m not a huge fan, I like Yunho & DBSK, they’re funny, charismatic and sing well. It’s just that I’m disapointed that this became an idol-drama, I like football so when Kim Rae Won was going to be on it, I was excited because it seemed like it would be a real sport-drama. And I like sport-dramas & movies.
But with Yunho casted & SM probably producing the drama, it seems like the plot & script will just be background and they’ll just focus in eye-candy and change the plot to attrack DBSK-fangirls and teenagers. If this drama was intended to be like that since the beggining, I woulnd’t mind.
okay, i love yunho but NOOOOOOO. i always feel embarrassed for him when he tries to act. it’s always like… too overboard (i think he doesn’t know what subtleties are) and… i don’t even know. i’m always just cringing. sorry yunho, but i think i’m sitting this one out.
and are you kidding me? Go Ara? SM drama? -___________-;;
lol..ara is definitely going to be the lead
1) she hasn’t been active lately
and
2) sm is going to pull some strings for her: if this drama wants hot commodity yunho, they’d better take ara as well.
ara considering the role? like she has any choice…psh.
omg judgmental people is so fuckin annoying!! why must all of you stereotyped idols as talentless and unworthy of anything? i’m sorry but i am going to watch this drama because yunho is in it. i won’t give a damn if kim rae won is in this because he’s ugly and his acting isn’t that impressive either. he used to be kind of hot when he started but right now he is almost a has-been. why can’t people just see this as a new beginning to the birth of a future great actor of korea? everyone has to begin with something and this is probably the call for yunho. actually i always think of yunho as the next eric moon. both a leader of an influential kpop group, the designated rapper and they both possessed the good looks and charisma.
give the boy a break. i make no apologize for my english since it’s 3 am where i came from
Did you know that the producer personally asked Ara to join the drama? I just read it from one of the Daum articles.
Its really funny because I’m a big DBSK fan here but I find some of the anti-fan comments on Daum to be hilarious. There was this one thing where an anti-fan wrote what the drama was going to be like.
blah, blah, blah . . . at the end, Bong Kun will think that a big rock on the floor is a soccer ball and try to do a heading, then he dies. LOL
lol, i bet the ratings will be high cause of all the fans out there
although i like ahra, i hope someone else gets cast
the whole sm cast thing isn’t very original?
kyla,
As a fan of DBSK you have the right to defend Yunho. You also have the right to think Kim Rae Won is ugly (everyone have different taste), but saying Kim Rae Won’s ‘acting isn’t that impressive’ and that ‘he is almost a has-been’ is non-sense.
Kim Rae Won was praised lots of time for his acting and he’s for sure not a ‘has-been’, his latest drama had over 20% of rating and his latest movie was also top 3 on korean box-office.
Well, I don’t think anyone can beat KRW but seriously…………
Just because he is from DBSK people make lots of fuss about it?
Take a look of Kim Hyung Joong, Shinhwa Junjin, Alex and TOP. They have started acted earlier in K dramas and for GOD sake, they CAN’T act. I have to say, Yunho is not an actor but I think DBSK has take LONGER AND SERIOUS CONSIDERATIOn before jumping into K-dramas industry. I mean, they are sure have been offered with TONS of roles, but they refused since they are focusing in their singing jobs. I thinks to look at times etc, its quite understandable but I didn’t mean I agree to this matter.
But, well they will be people who just have prejudice and stigma because he is TVXQ. Of course, we didn’t know of his ability and skills and we are sure he is not an actor, but what about others singer who debut into acting? They are FAR worse and more reckless when decide and choose their entrance towards acting.
Their BANJUN dramas, is not a benchmark to judge his skills. But thier VACATION DRAMAS, is something which is worth to look upon in terms of acting skills and ability.
Jodorama, has their singers acts in 10-5 years back. Take Kimutaku for instance, he is an excellent actor until nowadays. I bet Yunho debut will be mediocre at best but heck ya, this is HIS choice of life and chill out people. NEWS boys like YAMAPI and other Jpop boys has started earlier than this. Their earlier dramas, was ok but they are developing later on.
Nevertheless, I prefer a real actor to act in this drama.
On one hand, I love DBSK and Yunho and want to support whatever endeavor they partake in. But…on the other hand, I have a deep hatred of idol dramas. Nearly 90% of idol dramas turn out to be a disaster and ends up making me wish those idols would just focus on their main jobs. Singers should sing, and actors should act. That’s why there is a school for these things. I hated BOF because it was an idol-y drama.
I feel like I’m betraying my DBSK-fangirl-side by not supporting this drama. Boo….I really wish they’d just release another single or album and not a haphazard drama. Nevertheless, from what is shown about leader-sshi, he’s excruciatingly serious about his work, so hopefully he’ll be just as serious about this acting business.
@ anastassia: I agree that Yamapi and a couple of other Johnny idols have improved drastically in the acting department, but that is because they’ve acted in countless dramas. I remember seeing Yamapi’s first drama, and his acting was HORRIBLE and he wasn’t even lead actor. Maybe Yunho will improve his acting skills after many dramas, but isn’t one of the things DBSK fans are most proud about is the fact that DBSK is 5-1=0? If Yunho or any DBSK member consistently take time off to brush up their acting skills then what different are they compared to News and Yamapi, SS501 and HyunJoong, BigBang and their solo acts? I for one, like DBSK as a 5 member singing group much more than a 5 individual entertainers.
heh, sry for the double post
@ boblicy: I agree with you on that. Well, what else can we do? Its the trend that I don’t like except the fact that I’m not a fan and I didn’t care much.:)
Yamapi still can’t act, but his best performance is Prodai which has won him the actor award I think. Jpop boys is far talented than Kpop in acting considering they have started earlier and developing their skills. I didn’t have so much faith in Katkun or NEWS boys when it come to acting skillls, but Arashi members is worth mentioning.
What a bizarre change.
Considering how both leads are from from SM Entertainment, I’m sure SM put in a nice word for both to appear.
Oh no what a hell???????//
KRW-> Yunho????/
just no….
We all know he is very handsome guy!!!
but in soccer drama ??? hella no,
I really like soccer, and i watch soccer every other day….
but what a h????
Yunho? he will be just standing there, and there will be many CG…s and many pretty faces, and all?? at least I wanna real actor, maybe who can’ t play REAL soccer….
please , just not Yunho,
sorry for DBSK fans!!!!!!!!!

ooh. OOOH. this will be interesting… while my hormones are yelling at me to leap and ‘fangirl’ shriek with joy, there is SOME doubt about yunho’s acting ability… MAYBE the banjun drama was just some relaxing activity for DBSK so i’m hoping to see a good performance from yunho! (DROOL) Go Ara’s acting skills are definitely moving so I’m afraid that in contrast, the newbie yunho would look quite stiff… TT.TT yunho, fighting!!
I’m prob gonna watch this drama cos of him, mostly because I want him to do well. I found the banjun drama’s funny and I thought he wasn’t too bad considering that it was meant to be a silly joke anyway.
I just hope he isn’t a Kangin from Super junior, I haven’t been able to finish the movie he did niether could I sit through that love is zero drama……SO DRY…….seriously.
All of these pre-judgment about his acting skills is based upon a Banjun Drama that he made four years ago? I never knew that such will qualify as point of reference. After all, the series was at that time only used as an avenue for album promotions.
Don’t expect an acting tour de force because, clearly, the director and producer were not after that when they hired him. Hence, they’ll know how to work around it. But, you have to agree, he comes with a lot of fringe benefits like the potential Asian television market’s interest in picking up the series.
@ the comparisions between k and j idols
I think thats a different situation, because aren’t Johnnys trained in both acting and singing before they debut?
Anyway, I’m not necessarily againest singers trying out acting because people can have more than one talent but acting is like any other skill, it takes time and dedication to perform well. A pretty face plus lots of fans does not make an actor (unfortunately, the entertainment biz seems to disagree), Heck, a lot of well established actors aren’t that great either.
I hope he does well but I think in the end he will be good for a singer but average for an actor.
