Kim Joon’s name sells musical tickets
by | July 30, 2009 | 15 Comments

T-Max rapper and Boys Before Flowers actor Kim Joon isn’t the lead role in his musical debut, but no matter: his name still drew flocks of fans to the Coex Artium on his first night onstage.

The musical Youth March [aka March of Youth, 젊음의 행진] began running on July 18, but the 29th marked Kim Joon’s first performance (which is double-cast between him and another actor). Lest you doubt the pull of his name, the audience fill rate rose 30% on that night from previous nights, nearly selling out the theater completely. According to Kim’s management, this is due not only to the attendance of his domestic fans, but even that of fans who’d come from other parts of Asia, such as Taiwan.

In the musical, Kim Joon plays the student teacher of main character Yongshimi, and sings songs like the 1980s tune “To You” (그대에게) and Lee Seung-chul’s “Last Concert” (마지막 콘서트). He will continue in the musical role through October 25.

I don’t remember whether it was on this website where I saw it, but there was a post or article or something a while ago that mentioned that having big k-stars come in and do theatre or musicals tended to show a marked increase in ticket sales, regardless of whether the production was good.

And somebody in the article lamented that that showed that the Korean audience wasn’t yet sophisticated enough to tell the difference between a good show or bad one.

Still, the counter to that is that k-stars like Kim Joon perhaps are actually REALLY talented in a lot of ways (which is how they get chosen in the first place from the thousands and tens of thousands of hopefuls), and having them in a production makes the production that much better. I’ve never seen or heard anything with Kim Joon, but given his multi-talents of him and a lot of other young stars, I am guessing maybe there is some truth to that?

I’d like to see him a new drama. I liked him in BOF.

Now this is a good example of the BBF wave working well without us on overload (cough GHS). I would want to see this play. Too bad Korea isn’t just a weekend trip for me.

I’m so sick of the BBF flower craze that I usually just skip over anything that has to do with the drama but this actually sound somewhat interesting.

I can’t imagine how Kim Joon could’ve carried a musical role; the last time I checked, his singing was extremely mediocre (at best). I haven’t bothered to check out his new single, though. Perhaps he’s improved by leaps since T-Max’s earlier works by hitting the noraebang in his free time during BOF?

i find kim joon’s singing too ordinary where i prefer his members’ singing in T-max. Its e BOF effect definitely… mayb he does act better than he sing ?
This reminds me of Junsu of DBSK acting in the Mozart musical but Junsu definitely has good vocals !
