Posters unveiled for My Love By My Side

Wow. We’ve already heard that Kim Myung-min (Beethoven Virus) would be losing a significant amount of weight as he filmed his latest movie, My Love By My Side [내 사랑 내 곁에], but the end result is even more startling than previously noted.
You can see how gaunt he is in these new posters for the movie; in order to play a convincing Lou Gehrig’s disease patient, he lost more than 20 kilograms over the course of filming, which translates to approximately 44 pounds. And considering that his normal starting weight was around 160 pounds, that makes his final number under a worrying 120 pounds.
We saw Kim Myung-min’s weight-loss and character-building process chronicled to an extent in his MBC documentary (titled Kim Myung-min Was Not There, taken from his ability to shed his own personality entirely when getting into character). The character gradually loses control over his limbs and muscles, in the end only able to express himself through his eyes. Ha Ji-won plays Kim’s love interest, who watches over her husband as he gradually deteriorates.
The film sounds horribly tragic, but these are two pretty great actors who ought to be wonderful to watch together. My Love By My Side will open in theaters on September 24.

I want to see this so bad.. in big screen. I wish I were in Korea so I wouldn’t have to wait several months before being able to watch this
@1: me too! i want to watch this REAL BAD. I love KMM since BV days and i’ve been waiting for this like forever.
KMM so gaunt! so…different from his BV days…the first poster reminds me of jang hyuk…
i love the 2nd poster! they look so sweet together.
can someone please translate the tagline?
thanks for this, sarah!
wil post this in our MMI forums!
i don’t know..may be it’s just me..the woman picture not in close up so i don’t know her expression…usually the partner will have tired face too or some wrinkles..oh you know what i mean…no time for make up…
The first poster shocked me. I have seen the documentary at viikii.net It shows when filming of this drama started. Kim MyungMin doesn’t look so gaunt. As per Han Ji Won, she is young and looks very pretty. Looks like this is a must watch. When will it start airing?
Thanks for this javabeans!
I wanna watch this too! KMM is so skinny!
I hate sob stories but these two actors are too wonderful to miss!
Kim Myung-min’s character description reminds me too much of Christian Bale’s role in the Machinist. He lost 27kg(ish) for the role, and then had to buff up for Batman Begins! Anyway, looking forward to seeing this movie, because I love it when actors undergo extreme transformation as a sign of dedication to their art. I love Ha Ji-won too!
It is too much weight lost! 27kgs is too excessive and it can be dangerous for health!
Can’t chide him for being such a consummate actor, but seeing him this gaunt makes me want to cry.
i am so seeing this when it comes out. i didn’t even recognize him when i saw the poster..!!!
the tagline reads:
he who cannot talk
or even move
brings you to tears
…roughly. it sounds a lot more natural in korean! :S
this is going to be a tearjerker… am not going watch this movie… hate crying while watching…..gives me migraine…
The documentary “KMM was not there” was a great documentary on how KMM approaches building a role or a character. If I recall correctly, the gaunt-ness apparently comes from his daily spartan diet of a block of tofu and tea. I think that kind of diet should be filed under “kids, don’t try this at home.”
Yes, he’s really wonderful to watch. I discovered him recently after watching Bad Family. I like Nam Sang Mi and happened to check out the drama because of her. He’s really charismatic.
@9: Yes, this is (very) potentially fatal. I’m just so worried for Kim Myung-min. Hope all the dieting doesn’t give him lifelong health problems.
(Ahhh the first poster makes me wanna cry.)
Woohoo!!! I LOVE KMM!!!
He’s really one great actor! And he IS really thin now. Worrying thin. Anyway, I know he’ll get back in shape soon again.
@11, heejung:
Thanks! Yeah, many things always sound better in their original language.
Well, his next project should be another open city type..hehehe. then he’ll get back into shape. like hsinya said, christian bale!
@4, tamu: well, i guess she drew joy and strength from his cheerfulness. despite his lou gehrig disease, he’s supposed to be a cheerful person. hey, the girl must always look pretty. it’s not a horror movie. so haha. kmm may look gaunt, but hjw must look pretty. XD
I am ubber excited for this film. Finally, a film with some seriously talented actors.
Wow I hope he lost that weight in a somewhat healthy way…. He weighs the same as me O.O and I’m a 15 year old girl !
KMM! I just finished watching Beethoven Virus and I so love this guy. But I’m not happy with all the weight he lost. He looks so emaciated that it freaks me out.
i usually stay away from dramas or films that’s under the “i will make you cry real baaad!” category, but i think i’ll make an exception for this one, since it has 2 great actors in it
ooo wow – just my opinion – I think that’s taking Methods Acting too far … seeing KMM in this film makes me worry more about his health than enjoying his acting…
Anyway – I wish SDA 2009 – Best Actor goes to him! Best of luck.
wow he is now my weight…but like much taller. now that filming is over, i hope he is chowing down on some of that wonderful korean food!
I knew it, this role is made for KMM not KSW. Yeah Ha JiWon is still as pretty! Cool sad movie to look forward to with my hubby or my cat..
A must watch for me! I love tearjerkers.. Although I usually go for the tragic romantics.. But this sounds too good to pass up. And kinda reminds me of the Japanese drama and movie One Litre of Tears..
@ Eeefu yeah…hope KMM gets the Best Actor Award in the upcoming SDA!
If so, this is gonna be his 7th award for Beethoven Virus!!! Yohoo!!
losing that much weight must have been crazy for his body. i admire his dedication but still… harming his body like that…
