And now for Iris’s Lee Byung-heon

The Iris promotion machine is really in full swing now, isn’t it? After months of silence about the high-budget drama, we slowly started seeing stills and behind-the-scenes peeks, and now that the premiere is less than a month away, it’s a full-on barrage of promos and updates.

Now that we’ve seen Kim Tae-hee and the rest of Iris’s supporting cast, here’s a look at its big movie star Lee Byung-heon. And all I’ve got to say is, hot damn it’s Lee Byung-heon!

Lee’s last movie, the Hollywood action flick GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra, wasn’t exactly critically acclaimed but performed well at the box office. It’s been years, however, since viewers were able to see him on television; his last drama role was in the highly popular gambling series All In back in 2003, in which he starred alongside his now-ex Song Hye-gyo.

In Iris, Lee plays a brilliant, cool-headed top spy who doesn’t make errors, who often takes on secret missions for South Korea’s security agency, the NSS. He falls into a “fateful love” with his fellow NSS teammate played by Kim Tae-hee. (And also, it would appear, with North Korean enemy spy Kim So-yeon — now, that’s the one I’m interested in seeing. It’s like Swiri 2.0! Hey, it ain’t called IRIS — spell it backward — for nuthin’, right?)

Wow, the Drool Club has so many esteemed members, I'm feel so honored to be in such exalted company

@ lovenyc52, you seem to have embarked on a mini-LBH bender yourself, enjoy TGTBTW. Jung Woo-sung is one of the few men in k-movies that can hold his own with LBH in pure masculine hotness, be prepared to take a cold shower afterwards.

@ Kobe

KTH - we are all hoping and praying. No snark intended, I want so desperately for her to be as intense, awesome, and gorgeous as possible. I want IRIS to be everything Drool Club members want, and then some.

@ epyc

Agree 100%

the cast are fantastic, i think all the roles fit them to a T. I like Kim Seo Y coz she can do both bad and good perfectly. such a good actress.

LBH is the best. He's the reason why i love KDrama. After watching All-In, i never stopped. I still believe that he's still alive in GI Joe (i did not see his dead body anyway) and will still be casted in GI JOE 2. He and Ray Parker are the only reason why i watched it several times.

@ Beng, I completely agree with the GI Joe idea! I feel like any uncertain deaths leave lots of room for comebacks...Although it is pretty unlikely that he survived the fall, not to mention the cold.

But I hope.

"will still be casted in GI JOE 2."

And in fact, he HAS been cast for GI Joe 2 + 3.

Now, you may wonder how they're to bring back Stormshadow. I say -- go and rewatch Episode 1 of All In and explain to me how the hell he survived THAT!! :D

"KTH MIGHT RUIN IRIS"

Only person who can ruin Iris is "Bruckheimer of K-drama" Choi Wan Kyu. And given that he hasn't really tried to be a proper writer since Jumong, you never know.

@ 55 belleza

"go and rewatch Episode 1 of All In and explain to me how the hell he survived THAT"

I have, 55 thousand times in my head - it's because LBH's undying love for SHG made him immortal, so now he can't age, is getting indescribably hotter with the years, and can't die.

@ 57 more

“KTH MIGHT RUIN IRIS”

I have to second belleza, but qualify with the fact that KTH's eyes might ruin a scene. I can't believe even at her worst, she can ruin the entire drama. Maybe just a scene, and make me laugh when I should be crying. Hoping, people, I have lots of hope riding on this not happening.

LBH is the only reason I took my kid s to watch GI Joe. And at the end of the movie I told them he did not --- ok. "No way, Mom, how can he survived " they said. So I can't wait to take them for GI Joe 2. :)

@molly...
hehe... Storm shadow will surely survived despite the cold :P
Maybe at first director was giving leeway for himself... he was like uncertain about BH's success as Storm Shadow thus had in mind to have Storm Shadow killed and dropped dead... BUT overwhelmed by BH's amazing potential and recent limelight at the promo... one can't resist not to revitalized Storm Shadow character ^ ^ thus two more sequel were being signed, I heard.

Glad that many fancy LBH's acting and every confident pose he displayed ;p
Heard from a friend who recently visited Seoul that LBH is all over Korea these days... esp with this Missha cf which many must have drooled over many times :P

"so now he can’t age, is getting indescribably hotter with the years,"

Seriously folks. 2009 Lee Byung Hun looks younger than 1999 Lee Byung Hun. He and Bae Yong Joon need to share their secret with the rest of the world!!

"I have to second belleza, but qualify with the fact that KTH’s eyes might ruin a scene."

FWIW, I agree with Kobe that it's getting mean with the KTH jokes. I mean, Song Seung Heon gets heat too, but it just doesn't stop with her. It's like everybody indulges their inner anti with her.

Having said that, yes, if Kim Tae Hee throws down her "Death Stare". . . . well I hope we get "white piano on "white alps with Lee Byung Hun wear a white tux" scene somewhere. Maybe he loved her more, but I didn't love her less. (WTH does that mean Kwon Sang Woo? Do YOU even know??? )

I'm actually very serious about Choi Wan Kyu screwing this drama up. He's become a synopsis consultant who outsources his 5-minute whiteboard plot bubbles to talented, but overwhelmed writers.

@ Janie

I love you! - thanks for sharing the LBH CF.

I saw one even better a few days ago in my LBH youtube scrounging - the BTS making of that above vid you posted, and do you know why it's better, cuz every few scenes, you see LBH either doing push ups, pull ups, lifting massive weights, well, you get the drift (and the eye candy). Apparently, even a God needs to work on maintaining what I now deem to be near KSW-level abs of steel.

Makes sense that he's everywhere in Korea these days - gotta drum up excitement for IRIS.

Here's the BTS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQeB0wvqrp4&feature=related

@ belleza

Oooh, never heard of Choi Wan Kyu, or what he's been up to. Thanks for the heads up. I also hope IRIS doesn't bring out the KTH-antis (the way MFL is bringng out the YEH-antis, EoE brought out both the LDH and LYH-antis trying to out anti-each side, you understand what I'm talking about).

As for LBH looking younger, it's pretty amazing what proper maintenance can do for a movie star, I think many of the top actors of his generation are aging spectacularly well, I find them so much sexier.

"(the way MFL is bringng out the YEH-antis, EoE brought out both the LDH and LYH-antis trying to out anti-each side, you understand what I’m talking about)."

I don't really subscribe to fangirl culture either way.

"Oooh, never heard of Choi Wan Kyu, or what he’s been up to."

Choi Wan Kyu is one of the main "event" writers in K-drama (Iris, Swallow the Sun, Kingdom of the Wind, Gourmet, General Hospital 2, Lobbyist, Air City, Jumong, All In, Sang Do, Huh Joon.) However, what he really is a "script franchiser" (like Jerry Bruckheimer) who hires other writers to fill out his big plots. So you often get writing with sloppy transitions and inconsistences in dialogue and characterization. After all, how the hell could he do 3 major dramas in one year, unless he had 30 people writing them?

I love Choi Wan Kyu in the sense that he has a major boner for RPG-style sageuks and cheesy 80s action movies. And, sometimes, when he actually tries (i.e. does most of the writing himself), he can execute the postmodern influences from noir, gangster, and other American genres. Also, Choi Wan Kyu likes to bring in the same faces (half of Jumong is in Swallow the Sun!) again and again. So it's fun.

My hope is that Choi Wan Kyu feels enough pressure from the bosses to actually sit down with his team and sweat out the details. Is all I ask.

I was going to see TGTBTW when it was shown on the filmfestival last week - BUT it was soldout. I really died that day, I was so excited to finally see the movie - AND FINALLY SEE SEXGOD LBH - !!!
i really thougth noone would be interested in a Korean western film, it doens't sound quite interesting, does it, for those who aren't familiar. I really thougth the cinema would be almost empty, but I guess NOT.
Yeah, sorry guys I'm angsting all over the place right now, I just got sooooo mad. So my friend took me to see another movie, The Dust of Time, and it was just shit, and all I wanted was to see some LBH on the white screen. Bugger.
I know I could just downnload it but nothing wins seeing films on the white screen.

And now my whole comment is full of stupid spelling erros cus im so angry i hit the keys so hard.

For those of us in here that don't understand Korean, here is an interview in English of LBH at the GIJoe premier.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=envlCc3hkaY

It was soooo cute how the reporter kept asking him questions like: Was it challenging for you to fight? and this and the other... and LBH didnt want to sound conceited or anything, so he always found something that for him was new to do, that way he could say it was a bit challenging.... but of course, we know how well he can fight so... hehehe, he is so cute my LBH NENE, hehe.

*fans self* OMG!!! Really this post should have come with a health warning!
The mainpage was slowing loading then I saw 'Iris-LBH' on the recent posts and forget the rest..

Once again JB does not disappoint in sharing the sexiness of LBH! Alhough my (yes MY) poor LBH looks tired in the first 2 pics. I will have to give him a hug (and then some) to thank him for his sexiness. JB that last pic is a gift to us all!
Thanks Samsooki for refreshing my memory about the abs..olute awesome of LBH's body through that link to JB's previous gift to us. :)

Only had a chance to briefly skim the last few OTs but seems like many people are just discovering the wonderous joy of LBH. I loved him in 'All In' and really he only has gotten better. I liked BD but there is something about All In that i seem to love more. Maybe it was the better visuals? Might have to rewatch them too just to compare hehehe

Have still not watched GI Joe - as none of my pals were willing to fork out $ to join in drooling over Stormshadow. My friends really have not got their priorities right! I mean c'mon - LBH's hot bod on the BIG screen. Nose bleed city and well worth the cost of a movie ticket for a glimpse. Hmm think I need to upgrade my friends....LOL

@belleza
"Seriously folks. 2009 Lee Byung Hun looks younger than 1999 Lee Byung Hun. He and Bae Yong Joon need to share their secret with the rest of the world!!

Have to say no contest LBH wins in the sexiest category! I

'm not sure whether it is due to his current hair or lack of recent acting roles but BYJ seems to have less (or rather no) sex appeal now(except for the Japanese ajumma's who continue to love Yonsama) . But come to think of it I have never considered BYJ as sexy . Then again LBH is in a very select league of sexiness. With a killer smile too...*swoon faints nose bleed*.

Sweet mother of %W$%$ god! THAT is LBH's English? That is AMAZING! I was expecting to hear some Konglish or something, but for someone who did not grow up in an English speaking country.....wow, that's unbelievable. @Kobe,

Yeah when I heard him in GI Joe, I was like "dude, Brian Lee talks like a dude. Dude!!" No seriously, that's not only fluent, that's an actual Californian accent. I'm not sure how he did it, because he clearly did not spent the last 5 years living in SoCal. (And if he did, dang . . . how did he escape MY snake eyes!!)

The word "good" doesn't really describe the movie, but he's really cool in GI Joe.

LBH does have the gift of language! hehe, thanks to that blondie whom he hanged out recently :P
Anyway, here's an excerpt from June 2008 interview...
Lee "boasted" that during his recent interview with the media from UK and other English speaking reporters, he used 100% English to converse with them and the media was awe at his English proficiency. He gave credit to his Hollywood colleagues, whom he has now build deep relationship with, for constantly helping and encouraging him with the language...He said in fact he had study some English during high school; His mom had enrolled him for two years English class.

He said he seem to have linguistic talent. When he entered Hollywood, he did not go for English study skill. When doing a drama on White Night (1998), he learned to speak Russian and the teacher praised him for his perfect articulation. The instructor commented that if he were to learn English, his English would be outstanding! He also learned Japanese for a month. Heard he is also fluent in French since that's what in majored in the University year ;p

@Laura, lol at the drooling tub, indeed a yike without bh in it ;p
During his interview last year, he secretly reviewed that his character in ICWTR; GBW; GI JOE would be topless ;p Wonder if he'll show off any of that in Iris ^ ^

The guy is not someone you would want to mess with. I mean, not only does he speaks English better than I do!!! lol But he also speaks French and Mandarin... NO, NO, I'm sorry... I have to say this right and brag even when it has nothing to do with me... he has a major in French Literature. So... again, he is not someone you want to mess with.
Which is why I admire him so, so, so, so, much.

@ Belleza... WHITE FLAG!!! I can tell you LOVE this dude.

"I dont want to shit on anyone's parade" But I don't know if maybe LBH have had surgery done to look younger. It doesn’t seem like its the case. But with Yonsama, it definitely seems like it is the case, Maybe I'm wrong about him, but looking at his face sometimes reminds me of the women that have surgery and inject their lips.... Im not saying he actually injected his lips, I know Koreans have full lips, but Im just saying his face looks very smooth like when its been under the knife. That would explain why he looks younger.

Regardless of what I think, he is, without a doubt, a very handsome man.

Ehhh . . . actually, LBH's reputation is not that great. First, he's known as difficult on the set. (Though again, that reflects more his deeply commitment to the work.) Second, he's kinda known as a playboy and some rumors suggest he's kind of a pervert. (Mostly fallout of HyunKyo-gate though.) Then again, who knows?

Hi Belleza, it's always so good to read your insights especially on LBH.. I'm such a latecomer around here. ^^ I noticed that I had barged in suddenly, sorry everyone.
Yup, he's known to have a work 'reputation' at the set but nothing diva-like a la "On Air". Something that Parlk Chan Wook calls as a "nosy" actor, always asking questions and giving ideas and of course, very hardworking. He keeps the directors on alert all the time which explains why Dirs. PCW and Kim Ji Woon loves working with him. On the either hand, poor Dir. Cho (of Once in a Summer).. people could easily mistakenly LBH as the director instead. LOL! In some of the IRIS BTS, it's clear that he had been giving tips to KTH.. hope something good will come out of it. Frankly, their scenes together seem to look credible compared when she's not pairing with him.

But he has always been so professional when working, he was recently traveling back and forth to Japan (due to pre-scheduled events) in-between IRIS and had returned to Seoul quite immediately to resume the shooting. Co-stars noticed that he's a bit unwell but LBH continues on as nothing was wrong. In one of his interviews, he admits of getting quite impatient when things are not at par as expected.. from staff, etc but tried to be as calm as possible.

"Second, he’s kinda known as a playboy and some rumors suggest he’s kind of a pervert. (Mostly fallout of HyunKyo-gate though.) Then again, who knows?"

Even after 5 years of no-connection between them.. he is still isn't spared at all.. amidst the 'HyunKyo-gate' issue. The high stakes of being a top actor and a well-known celebrity. Words has it that he had deeply cared for her back then and even tried saving the "doomed" (is there any other appropriate word?) relationship before the break-up but the doors were already closing on him. But sigh, doesn't that what girls want .. somehow? As for rumors.. much of the most malicious ones in the K-entertainment have been directed to LBH .. yet he doesn't give a hoot or becomes volatile like some.. and keeps going on giving his best as he is doing now.

But then.. who knows the real deal between two people. If it's not meant to be, then it won't .. hope someone will truly make him happy and be even happier hooking up with the sexy, intense & hot man ^^ for sure he isn't the Prince Perfect type, no.. no.. but he's Lee Byung Hun.

@ Belleza

yeah he is sweet. I think, that if you read his interviews on what he thinks about matters of the heart and life, etc, you will feel the same way. But then again, everybody see things differently. I personally think he seems like a very emotional person because of what happened with his father, and how he took care of his mom and sister in his place. I mean, he seems to be very devoted to his mom and sister, and I have always thought that a man who cares deeply for his mom and family, is a sweet man overall.

If he is difficult on set, well, no wonder he is such a great actor. Most good actors are known to be difficult on set. Because they want to give it their all, and they expect others to do the same, whether they do it or not it’s a different matter.

About the rumors of him being a playboy. OK… he spoke very well of his romance with the actress, something she was not so generous of doing. I mean, its ok to talk about your private life, but why say negative stuff about someone you clearly loved once, and perhaps, still love since you are wasting energy talking bad about them.
She said something like “I would never fall for a pretty face again.” Hyun Bin???? Hello???? That is such a stupid remark, and it often comes from someone who is hurt. So, its not an honest declaration. It seems more like something you would say out of spite. Which makes me think very bad about the person. But hey! I don’t care for her acting or dramas that much, so… whatever.

LBH was asked about his love life, and he said something about being in a previous relationship which he knew everybody knew about, but that it had ended (never said anything negative about her) and that he wanted to have a family and so on…

I think that it is up to us to decide what we want to believe of LBH. I choose to believe what he says on the interviews, because its coming from him directly, and it seems he is kinda reserved when it comes to his private life, which to me, speaks very well of the person (specially if it’s a man talking about a woman) He knows what answers to give without disappointing. At the same time, what’s wrong with being a little flirtatious or playful? I think that the fact that many actors, directors, producers, love working him, is because he is an honest man overall, someone who likes doing things right, and who wouldn’t want to work with someone like that?

"But then.. who knows the real deal between two people. If it’s not meant to be, then it won’t .. "

That is one of the smartest comments I have ever heard (in regards to all of the actors that suffer from bad publicity because of their love lives)
Thank you Rubie.

I think, actors don’t stop acting until they are truly comfortable among friends and families, and possibly among fans as well (depending on how honest the actor is) But to say that an actor will be his true self when speaking about his private matters its a lot to expect of someone who is as much human as we are. I mean, why would he say the complete “TRUTH”, in detail, behind the whole brake up? Details about what went wrong? That’s not important to us.
There will always be negative comments about one or the other. Like I said before, whether we want to believe those comments or not, it’s our choice. However, just because we choose to believe, doesn’t make it a fact.

I kinda shrug at the personal life stuff. Have to, as a Russell Crowe fan. :D

"Yup, he’s known to have a work ‘reputation’ at the set but nothing diva-like a la “On Air”. Something that Parlk Chan Wook calls as a “nosy” actor, always asking questions and giving ideas and of course, very hardworking. "

Also, it's important to consider his situation. Since pretty much the mid-90s, Lee Byung Hun was one of SBS's go-to guys for their event dramas. In other words, when they needed an actor to carry one of their expensive shows, they often went to LBH. And often, these dramas weren't written very well, and so LBH had to carry the quality of the show. I think partially he "retired" from TV, because he was tired of that professional stress.

It's interesting to watch his 90s work, because most of us only know Byung Hun as a A-List finished product. We didn't see him developing his craft as a young man (go back to, say, 1995's Asphalt Man and you'll see what I mean.) The charisma that almost demands that his face be the root psychology in every scene, that came through hard work.

Ahhh, I bought it at the local DVD shop. They called it "Dream Racers."

I only made it through one episode. This was a SBS Event Drama type show (by the peeps who would make Beautiful Days), airing sometime after Sandglass. The cast itself is awesome. Lee Byung Hun, Choi Jin Shil (RIP), Jung Woo-sung, Lee Young Ae, and future All In counterpart Hu Joon Ho..

But it's SO cheesy looking (I don't know if y'all grew up around Korean young women in the 90s, but dude the makeup here is just so of that time . . . THICK and just overdone!!) and LBH is kinda meh. Well at least from the first few episodes. I may go back and watch this and let y'all know.

I am so happy! More of Lee Byung Hun. In fact I watched GI Joe and was happy to see him. I think that of all the Korean celebrities that are trying to make it in Hollywood - he already has 2 films out and I'm sure he'll have more out soon. I just hope that Hollywood stops with the prejudices and stereotypes and lets him be the Will Smith of Asians.
