I want to respond to this as well. Firstly, black and white are the essentials of this work – the title means walking in the day in darkness, or walking at night with daylight.

The book itself offers an explanation of this title as well. One line in the book by the female lead said ” There’s no sun in my world, it’s always night, yet it’s not dark. That’s because I have something else in place of the sun, and that is enough. And with this light, I can turn night into day. I never had the sun, so I’m not afraid of losing it.”

The light source – which is the male protagonist, is the light that lits up her world, which can also mean hope, is the only bright spot in her life.

And the irony to all this is the female “protagonist” leads a seemingly luminous life while the male protagonist is the exact opposite. Yet, the one living in the dark is the light/hope for the female who only seemed to have a bright life, but in fact, has a dark past that continues to haunt.

The book itself is truly an amazing piece of work.

I have great regard for both Sohn Yen Jin and Jeon Do Yeon (a remarkable actress). Happy End was a great film thanks to JDY and the equally great and magnetic Joo Jin Mo. The sex scene you’re referring to is truly memorable and actually increases the dark melancholy of the sotto voce, violent tragedy that film depicts so well. Happy End is not a film for the faint hearted. An Untold Scandal is a film belonging to JDY and Lee Mi Sook (acting’s one true goddess); they overshadowed Bae Yong Joo and stole the film from him.

And for those who think of SYJ as the personification of ‘innocence’, my question to them would be, why representing a character who has sex makes the actress or the character represented less innocent? As comment no.37 (Elizabeth) says why does the suppression of the physical side of love spell innocence? Keeping quite about the complexities of love results in innocence? I’m glad SYJ is more interested in acting (exploration, interpretation, understanding) than reproducing the manufactured image her fans are accustomed to, and takes on really bold and challenging roles. I thought she was wonderful, together with Yonsama, in April Snow (a film that could have benefited with 10-15 more minutes added to it handling its mute feelings a bit better than it did) and I can’t wait for Into the White Night to be made available on the web and released on DVD (region 2 with English subs. please). Absolutely no chance of seeing it on the wide screen in Europe.

Son Yeh Jin is maybe the biggest 20-something movie actress. True A-list who’s won film awards. BUT, this is the first really, really dark role that she’s undertaking. A proper adaptation of the novel (let alone the J-drama) is going to be award bait.

I kinda have a working theory that had Lee Eun Joo survived, SYJ would not be where she is today. But that speaks more to IMO the greatness that could have been LEJ’s career.

All and all, she’s still the innocent Son Ye jin that i see in “summer scent”. If she does do nude scene. It kinda scares me.Honestly why does they need to do that sometimes. It ruins the movie for me.Maybe i’m a girl and i dont see it the same way. Leave something for the imagination.
